The Vigorous Local: Culture Industry, Hip-hop And The Politics Of Resistance In The Age Of Globalization

Mert, Ceren 01 September 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how music has become a significant means of communication in the process of globalization, and how it integrates the &lsquo / global&rsquo / and the &lsquo / local&rsquo / while enabling the aggrieved populations to speak through and to express their antagonistic stances. In addition to the discussions of globalization, this study analyzes the medium of music along the areas of media and identity politics. In this respect, it deliberates on the global and local features of hip-hop. Although born in the ghettos of Bronx, New York, this global youth culture has been adopted by other minority youths in order to voice their anger and frustration towards the exclusionist practices of the state, as well as racism and discrimination they face in their host countries. Accordingly, the second and third generation Turkish youths in Germany and South Asian youths in Britain have revealed their rage through the subversive lyrics they employed. Therefore, these lyrics can also be regarded as narratives that indicate these immigrant youths as representatives of resistance and defiance. Despite the fact that the musical works of these minority youths may be considered a product of the &lsquo / culture industry&rsquo / , this does not eliminate their resistive and subversive characteristics.

Discours, mémoires et territoires : les anciennes usines TASE et RHODIACETA entre patrimoine et oubli / Speech, memory and territory : the old Tase and Rhodiaceta factories between heritage and oblivion

Valex, Mathias 24 September 2018 (has links)
This work tackles the study of the material and discursive destiny of two old man-made textile factories in the Lyon area after their closing: the Tase factory based in Vaulx-en-Velin and the Rhodiaceta factory based in the 9th district of Lyon, which both belonged to the Rhône-Poulenc corporation until their closing in 1980.The starting point of this research was based on the fact that both factories were similar in many ways before their closing, yet haven’t followed the same path since then, neither according to space nor to speeches. We will therefore study the role of three discursive spheres in these differentiated paths from 1980 to 2013 –the civil sphere, the institutional sphere and the mediaarena- based on the analysis of their existence in the local media. We will analyze the local paper – Le Progrès - and the community press which told the stories of these old factories as well as the memories and heritage that are tied to their representation. This work is based on the analysis of a multi-scale evolving context which includes territory – economics and politics-, institutions –with the progressive extension of the notion of heritage-,and nation –the evolution of governments and of legislation. Finally, the media analysis is supplemented by semi-directive contemporary interviews of local players who work in these spheres. At the end of the day, this work questions the conditions in which a discursive representation of these old factories is supposed to have acknowledged them with a territorial identity. The local media have dealt with this issue from a certain past perspective, a creative reconstruction that fashioned this acknowledgement.

Strategiska svårigheter i dagens mediesamhälle : En kvalitativ studie av lokala medieorganisationerns strategier i förändringsprocesser

Högkvist, Erik January 2011 (has links)
The entire media industry is at the moment in a constantly ongoing process of change. All media organizations, both at global level and at local level, are affected in one way or another, and must consider how to act in the changes. Designing sustainable strategies for something that is constantly changing isn’t easy at all.      In this study, the approach to strategies in change at four local media organizations has been studied. Two of them, Nya Wermlands-Tidningen and TV4 Värmland, are commercially driven, while two of them are working for public service. Those two are Sveriges Televisions Värmlandsnytt and Sveriges Radio Värmland. These organizations have been selected since it seems to be interesting to study the phenomenon at local level and to investigate if there are any differences in their views on strategies in change, depending on whether they are commercially driven or not.      To respond to the purpose of this study, two separate studies were implemented, one qualitative interview study, where one member of the management at each media organization has been interview and one minor qualitative content analysis study. The function of the qualitative content analysis is to complement the interviews. The qualitative interview is the main methodology in this study.      The result of the empirical study shows that there are clear differences in what the local media organizations believe is essential in their change and what influences their strategic work. The informants of the commercially driven organizations, Nya Wermlands-Tidningen and TV4 Värmland, believe that the interest of the audience is essential, while the informants of Sveriges Televisions Värmlandsnytt and Sveriges Radio Värmland believe that regulations from the Swedish government and the Swedish parliament is the most essential factor.

Regioninės žiniasklaidos veiklos problemos ir įtaka bendruomenei: Alytaus atvejis / Local media problems and influence to the community: the case of Alytus

Buškevičiūtė, Edita 15 June 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Media studies is interdisciplinary science, so media problems, changes, influence to society is discussed between many researchers, who are specializing in Communication, Sociology, Politics, Education and many other sciences. There are a lot of talks about recent changes in media, media commercialization, growing influence by political and business organizations. This is research is yet another try to find out, how media is changing, how these changes affect society, what kind of influence businesses and political organizations have in media, how that influence changed in recent slow down in global economy. Empirical research object was media in Alytus, small region in Lithuania, and results were compared with similar regions. 22 follow-up qualitative interviews were carried out between members of media organizations, audience and experts. The main point was to check how theories and predictions, which were made by media experts earlier, work in practice in small regional media nowadays, what new problems are growing and what kind of damage they can do to local communities in near future. The results show, that regional media is very close to its audience geographically and can have a huge impact in formation of public sphere in local community, so the main problems are unclear connections between media and political, business organizations, which has influence in media reports, and media’s manipulation with ‘weakest’ audience in order to get a better sales and profit. Nastolování agendy ve vybraných lokálních médiích vlastněných městy (tzv. radničních listech) v Pardubickém kraji v roce 2020 / Concept of agenda setting in municipality-owned media (know as City hall newspapers) in Pardubicky region during year 2020

Kubištová, Dominika January 2021 (has links)
This thesis discusses the phenomenon of the so-called "town hall newspaper" across the Pardubice Region during 2020. These journals are classified by relevant literature as hyperlocal media, being produced for a relatively limited group of people, mainly inhabitants of one city and its suburbs. The thesis goal is to describe the work routine of these regional journals during 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread in the Czech Republic. In the practical part, there is a description of the press offices in the four smallest towns and the four largest cities of the Pardubice Region. The thesis explains their choice of topics and sources and describes making an article published in the hyperlocal media. The thesis author gathered these data via triangulation of methods. She had created a content analysis of three particular publications of each newspaper from 2020 that she used to prepare the look of the semi- structured interviews with the "town hall newspaper" office members. The main has been to describe the working routine of these journals in a more detailed way, not just in 2020.
