Thomas Hardy as dramatist

Gregory, Rosalyn January 2011 (has links)
This thesis traces Hardy's involvement in the theatre from the 1880s to the 1920s. The narrative of Hardy's relationship with the theatre is set against an analysis of the changing nature of the stage during this period, though I acknowledge throughout the thesis the fact that Hardy's awareness of the theatre did not perfectly keep pace with its evolution. The aim of the thesis is to examine the motivations determining Hardy's work in the theatre in light of the fact that he seemed so dismissive of its efficacy. I trace the history of Hardy's adaptations of his work for the stage, before setting the scripts against the novels in order to weigh the extent to which the novels resist translation into a different medium – whether there is something integral to Hardy's plots that cannot be conveyed on stage. I have chosen to focus predominantly on material that made it beyond a rough sketch on a scrap of paper, on projects that reached the stage of rewritings and commercial negotiations - often years before they were produced. My selection has been determined by the belief that the material is indicative of the development of Hardy's understanding of the relationship between his work and the possibilities adaptation offered. My first chapter, on the history of an adaptation of 'Far From the Madding Crowd' in 1882, argues that Hardy's collaboration with J. Comyns Carr on the script was driven by his desire to assert his copyright over the novel's afterlife. The adaptation may never have been performed, but simply have been registered with the Lord Chamberlain as a deterrent against unauthorised adapters. It was the plagiarism row over Arthur Wing Pinero's possible theft of Hardy's plot in his popular pastoral play, 'The Squire', that pushed Hardy and Carr to stage their version. My second chapter looks at the history of Hardy's adaptations of 'Tess'. I am interested primarily in his writing of two scripts in the mid-1890s, and his negotiations with leading actresses in response to their interest in creating the part of Tess. The chapter then looks at the circumstances leading to the eventual staging of the play in the 1920s, focusing on the difficulties posed by producing a script which was by then thirty years old, and showing its age. In the third chapter I concentrate on plans to stage two novels, 'The Woodlanders' and 'Jude'. Neither was produced, but both are evidence of Hardy's increasing interest in the possibility of selecting from his material, rather than compressing it into the time available. The two adaptations allied Hardy much more closely with the avant garde than his earlier work had done – 'The Woodlanders' was begun in 1889 at the suggestion of J. T. Grein and C. W. Jarvis, two men who would later found the Independent Theatre, a private subscription society which pioneered the staging of Ibsen in England. Hardy's own sketches for adapting 'Jude' (1895, 1897, 1910, 1926) concentrated on Sue's position. I set Hardy’s realignment of 'Jude' against a focus on the place of women in unhappy marriages, drawing principally on Hardy's contribution to a debate about the role of wives in the 'New Review' for June 1894 and a 'Westminster Review' article by the feminist Mona Caird (August 1888), which provoked three months of debate (and 27,000 letters) in 'The Daily Telegraph' on the question 'Is Marriage a Failure?' Caird’s ideal dovetails with Sue's views on marriage as 'legalized prostitution' and her revulsion from 'the dreadful contract to feel in a particular way in a matter whose essence is its voluntariness!' The final chapter of the thesis looks at two adaptations of 'The Dynasts'. The first is a wartime entertainment staged by Harley Granville Barker in 1914, the second is Hardy's own adaptation for Dorset amateur actors (the Hardy Players) to perform in 1916, which concentrated on the impact of the war on the local populace. I then turn to the premiere of Hardy's only full-length drama written specifically for the stage – the one-act Arthurian play 'The Queen of Cornwall' (1923). I argue in this final chapter that Hardy was beginning to move from the role of reluctant adapter to that of director, conscious of the boundaries imposed by the stage and experimenting with how to craft his work to fit within them, rather than abridging his material indiscriminately.

The small rural school and community relations in Scotland, 1872-2000 : an interdisciplinary history

Young, Helen Louise January 2016 (has links)
Seeking to fill a gap in the historiography, this study provides a closely-observed but contextualised social history of Scotland’s rural schools from the late nineteenth century through to the end of the twentieth century. Though particularly concerned with the period following the Education (Scotland) Act, 1872, consideration is given to earlier developments to ensure a depth of understanding and an appreciation of the subtleties of local experience. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, and combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, the thesis draws together three layers of research: a detailed regional case study of the Highland Perthshire parishes of Fortingall, Kenmore and Killin; a quasi-random sample of sixty-six rural districts from across Scotland; and a national overview. In doing so, it challenges oft-made generalisations about rural life and provides a more nuanced picture of change and continuity in educational policy and practice across Scotland. Focusing in on the relationship between the small rural schools and their communities, the social dimensions of educational provision are explored in depth with special attention being paid to who taught, attended and supported the schools, and how they operated as educational and social spaces. To frame and guide discussion, three core themes – gender, culture and citizenship – are explored throughout and elements of social theory are drawn on to aid analysis and interpretation.

This work focuses on the impact of the research on the historical formation of Nova Friburgo, conducted by historians linked to the Faculty of Philosophy Saint Dorothy, in working with the second segment of elementary school in the municipal education network. This research will seek, through the reports of three regent’s teachers of municipal schools, their approaches in the classroom about the local history. Our analysis will have as theoretical support the concepts of academic knowledge, teaching knowledge and school knowledge, and deal with the working conditions of teachers, from a perspective of "proletarianization" of the teaching profession, as an obstacle to the ideal of reflective practical teacher. And yet, it has the didactic and pedagogical product, a work proposal of local history as a method of discipline, through a Local Study Guide from the central area of the city, against the backdrop of the square Getúlio Vargas, under bias of the silenced and circularity memories between human activity and the landscape.

This work aims at defining the possibilities and challenges of education beyond the classroom. To this end, we selected the cultural heritage of the city of Cabo Frio, tangible and intangible, as a backdrop to this proposal. We also seek to undertake research on the municipal heritage, such as the location memory of places, trying to value them through heritage education, mainly made by teachers of history, geography and Arts of the Municipal Network to their students. The proposed product is a Cabo Frio City History Roadmap for teachers who intend to be used to assist teachers in their lessons on local history, heritage education and visitations to the city's cultural assets. The achievement of the product was carried out by research on professional historians work and local memorialists, besides the documentation available in the collection of the City of Cabo Frio, research in IPHAN and INEPAC documents. We used questionnaires to survey and interviews with professionals from the Municipal Education Network Cabo Frio: Teachers, Directors, Municipal Secretary and School Secretary; in order to investigate and propose viable ways for the school unit becomes an institution where children and adolescents learn to preserve the cultural heritage, the memory of the place where they live and are able to reinterpret the past critically. With the analysis of the interviews it was found that the Municipal Network of Education does not have an effective proposal of regional history and much less of heritage education, or at least the county curriculum, or the PPP of U.E surveyed. It was also found that educators do not work with these issues, because of the following shortcomings: poor academic training in topics Cultural and Local History Heritage, lack of continuous training, lack of teaching materials, deficiency of knowledge in preservationist policies and methodology heritage education. It is believed that the results of this research and the use of the proposed map History may subsidize educators and managers of the municipality in the formulation of educational policies and inclusion in the curriculum of themes centered on the cultural heritage of the municipality.

Oxford, the Thames and leisure : a history of Salter Bros, 1858-2010

Wenham, Simon Mark January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is an examination of the history of Salter Bros Ltd and the firms connected with it. Founded in 1858, it became not only one of the most important businesses associated with the recent history of the Upper Thames, but also a significant employer in Oxford. The study takes a thematic approach, which involves examining the five main areas of the firm’s commercial activities, which were: providing services for the sport of rowing (chapter 1), boat-building (chapter 2), boat-letting (chapter 3), passenger boat operating (chapter 4) and property development (chapter 5). This thesis draws on the firm’s archive, which has previously been unavailable to scholars. The mainly quantitative data from the archive is contextualised by reference to wider qualitative sources, although there is not always much comparative information to draw on. Finally, it focuses on the evolution of the workforce, which shows how the business managed to survive both the impact of the industrialisation of Oxford in the twentieth century and some of the challenges associated with family firms (chapter 6). By examining the areas shown above, the work sheds light on our understanding of (1) the socio-economic context of Oxford and the Thames, (2) the development of different forms of water-based leisure, and (3) how a family firm overcame some of the classic weaknesses of such businesses. Chapter 1 analyses the contribution that the firm made to the sport of rowing. The family moved to a riverside tavern in the mid-1830s and this resulted in heavy involvement with the rowing scene. They made a successful transition from professional oarsmen to successful racing boat-builders, which led to John and Stephen Salter moving to Oxford to start their own business in 1858. By exploiting the strong local rowing scene they built their firm up to be the market leader in the 1860s. Supplying craft for the Oxford and Cambridge (university) boat race was important for helping the business gain worldwide fame and, although Salters’ lost the ascendency in the 1870s, it provided a wide range of services for the sport until the second half of the twentieth century. It then slowly became divorced from the rowing scene and, despite a brief renaissance in the 1970s, the company finally bowed out of racing boat construction at the end of the 1980s. Chapter 2 explores the development of the boat-building side of the business. The firm was a major producer of craft and it was especially busy in the late 1920s and late 1970s, when new products helped to stimulate demand. By examining four areas of expertise (steel manufacturing, motorised boats, corporation craft and fibreglass construction) it becomes clear that the business was relatively slow to embrace new technology. Yet although it was not particularly innovative, Salters’ successfully exploited a number of emerging markets, like supplying craft for council-run boating lakes from the 1920s onwards. After a period of decline in the 1960s, the firm’s boat-building department was briefly revived by the introduction of fibreglass construction in the following decade, although this brought to an end skilled craftsmanship in the industry. Salters’ had to be flexible in order to survive, as is shown by the contract work it took on during the two World Wars, but in the second half of the twentieth century the firm’s focus moved away from boat-building towards providing leisure services. Chapter 3 examines the nature and timing of the rise of pleasure boating on the Thames and Salters’ role in promoting it. The railway destroyed much of the carrying trade on the river, but the waterway gained a new lease of life by the rise of leisure activities on it. Different types of boating were popular at different times and certain waterside locations were busier than others, but it is possible to discern short-term peaks in pleasure boating on the Upper Thames, as a whole, in the early 1890s and either side of the First World War (although the river became busier still after the Second World War). There were many factors contributing to the rise of leisure on the waterway, but Salters’ helped to popularise ‘the Thames trip’ between London and Oxford, which was linked to the growth of camping. The firm’s fortunes were also closely tied to the local market and by the late 1880s it had one of the largest fleets of rental craft in the country. Salters’ had to diversify according to changing fashions in pleasure boating, but after the 1920s there was a slow reduction in the number of craft it operated, until it stopped boat-letting altogether in the early 1990s – although this side of the business was revived a decade later, albeit on a smaller scale. Chapter 4 explores the firm’s involvement with passenger services on the waterway. The long-distance steamboat trips took much longer to become established on the Upper Thames, because of the logistical problems caused by having to pass through locks. Salters’ was the first business to make a success of running between Oxford and Kingston and it did this by forging a close association with the railway, which opened up the river to the day-trip market, and by building up its fleet to establish a monopoly over the long-distance journey. The service had to overcome many challenges, but one of the most serious problems it faced was the growth in pleasure boating after the Second World War. Although passenger numbers on the steamers peaked in the 1970s, general traffic on the river also reached record levels, which caused significant delays and forced the firm to end the through-service between Oxford and Kingston. Furthermore, by catering for the growing demand for shorter round trips Salters’ was drawn into direct competition with other companies that were already focused on this market. By the end of the twentieth century, the firm was no longer dominating the waterway and it was heavily reliant on income from both its home city of Oxford and private parties. Chapter 5 examines the extent and significance of the property the firm came to occupy. Salters’ acquired many new properties in order to expand the business and the firm’s success also enabled it to accumulate residential accommodation, which was part of the employment package offered to its staff, as well as being a source of rental income. The commercial sites were useful for preventing competitors from encroaching on the firm’s territory, whilst they were also subsequently used for further development. Most importantly, the property was a reservoir of capital that Salters’ relied upon in times of financial hardship. Chapter 6 focuses on how the workforce evolved in the twentieth century, which sheds light on how the business survived both the industrialisation of Oxford and some of the challenges associated with family firms. Salters’ went from being an employer with a highly skilled and local workforce to one that had fewer specialised craftsmen and which recruited mainly from outside the city. This was symptomatic of the city’s employment market that had been transformed by the motor industry in the interwar period, as well as the firm’s greater focus on its passenger boats, which was connected with it. Salters’ had to be flexible to accommodate the changes, but it was unable to compete with the high wages offered in the car factories and a shortage of local labour meant that it not only struggled to retain employees, particularly its skilled craftsmen, but standards of discipline also deteriorated. Nevertheless, the impact of wage competition was mitigated by the firm’s paternalism and the considerable appeal of working on the passenger boats. The latter offered an enjoyable lifestyle that was very different from the working environment of other waterway communities. The Salter family also played an important part in the survival of their company.

The focus of this project is on poetry, narrative, landscape and myth, and the palimpsest and/or hybridisation created when these four areas overlay each other. Our local communities' engagement with myth-making activity provides a golden opportunity for contemporary poets to continue the practice long established by our forebears of utilising folklore and legendary material as sources for poetry. / The theme of this thesis is the Pharmacy and Dentistry School of Uberaba (Uberaba School) and the strategies undertaken by Mineiro Lacerda, his chief officer, to the constitution and consolidation of the school. It aims to present the history of School Pharmacy and Dentistry having as goal to analyze why this institution of higher education succumbed after the Education Reform 1931, understanding the attempted process of formation and consolidation of institution of higher education in the Triangulo Mineiro area. The theoretical framework in the field of History of School Institutions, based on Magalhães (1999, p. 61) is the certainty that "the history of educational institutions was [and is] a domain of knowledge". As the main source we used a set of documents found in the Public Archives of Uberaba. This is a collection of documents of the Pharmacy and Dentistry School. The Lavoura e Commercio newspaper and the opinions of the National Council of Education were also primary sources of the survey. Among the findings is greater accuracy of the facts, based the documents analyzed on the history of Uberaba School. Through this work it was possible to analyze the consequences of the 1931 Reform for this private higher education institution, as it was before the reform; and which was considered a strategic location of pharmaceutical training and dentists in the Triangulo Mineiro and region. The termination of the activities of Uberaba School was accompanied by the closing down of many institutions of higher education in the country.

Indica, por fim, possibilidades de atualização museológica desse patrimônio herdado / Study of the engagement of part of the local population in the patrimony formation and in the process of institutionalization and consolidation of the Municipal Historical Museum of Franca, mediated by José Chiachiri, between 1957 and 1972, moving backwards to the period of 1937 to 1940; when places of memory and historical monuments were valued under the impact of the Bandeira Expedition Caravan visit. This study identifies choices between social representations of the local history, as a criterion to evaluate sense, meaning and traces of unity between semiopheres exhibited to the public, called vectorial nucleus of meaning. It demonstrates museal procedures of preservation, investigation and extroversion of the patrimony received evergetically. It makes EXPLICIT social alliances, political, ethnical, institutional and others solidarities and conflicts, in conformity with testimonies from the period, sine qua non condition to comprehend the passed on spectacle. The documental corpus grants privilege to the Sertaneja and Vilafranca magazines, managed by José Chiachiri, in order to reconstruct the spectacle on the scene in the Museum by his exposed speech.
