Construction transport efficiency from the perspective of main contractor and transporterNaz, Farah January 2022 (has links)
Transport efficiency within construction is low. One reason behind the lack of efficiency within the construction transport is the lack of proper logistics management that in turn results in problems of delivery reliability, material flows as well as material availability. Other issues caused by lack of proper logistics management are poor information sharing and poor transport planning. Poor information sharing results in outdated plans, last minutes changes, nonstandardized processes, whereas poor transport planning leads to low vehicle utilization, travelling extra due to poor routing, empty running, increased number of transports, improper material handling resulting in damages, etc. Therefore, lack of proper logistics management makes construction transports to use more resources (such as time, fuel, vehicle, energy, and effort) than needed which in turn has negative impact on the environment as well as on the productivity. Construction transport has not been given much focus in prior research because construction transport gets camouflaged in the purchasing price and therefore remains unnoticed as a distinct activity. This highlights the need to better understand construction transport to improve its efficiency. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to explore and describe the ways to measure and improve construction transport efficiency (CTE) by the use of logistics management. This is studied from two different perspectives: the main contractor and the transporter. In terms of logistics management, construction logistics setups (CLS) and performance measurements are studied. Following research questions fulfil the purpose of the thesis: RQ1: How to define and measure construction transport efficiency? RQ2: How can logistics management be used in improving construction transport efficiency? To answer the research questions, case study research has been used as there is a need to develop an in-depth and detailed understanding of construction transports. The thesis is based on two single case studies and one multiple case study. Data collection has been made via documents, interviews, and observations. The thesis defines construction transport efficiency and identifies performance measurements of importance within construction transport efficiency. However, there is a lack of useful data that makes it difficult to calculate most of the identified performance measures. The thesis enhances the understanding of lack of efficiency that exists within construction transports by identifying value adding, non-value adding, and necessary but non-value adding activities within construction transports. Furthermore, it shows that logistics management can be used in improving construction transport efficiency as logistics management has been found helpful in decreasing non-value adding transport activities such as waiting to load and unload, searching for the right unloading place, contacting the concerned person at site, putting a net on a filled waste container by the driver, taking pictures of the offloaded material etc. The thesis highlights the value that logistics services (such as material delivery management, on-site VMI, waste management) create for the main contractor and the transporter in terms of improving construction transport efficiency. Overall, this thesis increases the understanding of construction transport efficiency through the introduction of performance measures and providing examples of how logistics management can impact. The thesis is an important piece of knowledge in the bigger puzzle of developing performance measurement system (PMS). It contributes with a comprehensive, empirically based picture of value adding and non-value adding activities within construction transport.

Assessing Key Performance Indicators In Performance Measurement : A Case For Logistics Service Providers In Micro And Small Enterprises In BangladeshHossain, Munira January 2022 (has links)
Purpose The aim of this thesis is to find out the perception of the usefulness of key performance indicators (KPIs) among Logistics service providers (LSP) who are in the category of Micro and Small enterprises (MSEs) companies in Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh. What is the perception of the usefulness of Key performance Indicators (KPIs) among the managers of LSP MSEs in Bangladesh? Methodology The data for this thesis was collected through qualitative research techniques through semi-structured interviews with 7 LSP MSE companies In Bangladesh. Theory Theory section highlighted the challenges LSP MSE companies continuously face. With an increasing number of companies, the number of LSPS are growing at a faster pace to support those companies. LSP MSE companies have to compete more in a vibrant market for which it is crucial for them to track the performance of their company and make continual improvements. KPIs are a performance measurement tool which can help the LSP MSE companies to be more competitive in the market as business survival is one of the main priorities of these companies. Empirical findings, Analysis and Discussion This part presents the responses from the managers of LSP MSEs and then the narratives are explained with supportive theories. Findings show a moderate level of adoption of KPIs among the companies. With the right KPIs companies are able to turn the complex matter into a simple form with KPIs. KPIs can enable the companies towards better decision making processes with a clear picture about the direction. To improve the business performance, interviewed companies perceive that on time delivery, customer order cycle time, supply chain cycle time, on time shipping rate, number of customer returns, returns on investment, paying and returning customers are the most suitable for them. With KPIs they are able to act quickly when there is a downward trend in the company. Interviewed companies assert that KPIs provide a clearer view of the overall health of the organization than other performance assessment techniques.

Applying theory of constraint to create overall benefits for individual Distell wineriesHeyns, Andries Dirk Michiel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Distell Group limited is South Africa's leading producer and marketer of fine wines,
spirits and ready-to-drinks. The wine division has been confronted with limitations on
pressing capacity for a number of years. Sales of Distell wine brands are projected to
grow substantially, in particular in the premium and super premium categories.
Therefore a need for increase sUstainable supply of wine was created.
The objective of this study was to increase the throughput in Distell wineries
significantly, without or with minimal cash investment, by applying the principles of a
combined supply chain strategy. To achieve this, the study needed to allow for the
analysis of various scenarios, and indicate where the various constraints were within
the process.
Theory of constraint, which is a management philosophy aiming to continually
achieve more of the system's goal was applied to the Distell situation. The focus
points were to create value for the organisation, with collaboration between grape
farmers and the wineries.
It was necessary to follow a process of data capturing, and the data obtained from
the various sources in 2008 was combined into one database to develop a capacity
evaluation model.
There is no doubt that the Distell wineries as a group, improved their efficiency over
the last number of years, with effective management of the individual wineries. There
is however enough evidence to support the change to a combined supply chain
strategy, which could unlock more total benefits than the individual management. It is
clear from the findings in this study that not all the current available capacity is fully
utilised.
This study found that the white process in Distell was working at a higher than
required rate of the set capacity targets, and would need substantial capital
investment to increase throughput. The red process indicated opportunities for
increase throughput in the total system. It is possible to increase total throughput and
maintain quality for Distell wineries.
kapasiteitsmodel is ontwikkel.
kapasiteitsbenutting as wat waarvoor beplan was.
is ruimte vir verbetering, sonder groot kapitale spandering.
nodige kwaliteit vereistes.

O primeiro é a revisão bibliográfica. / The applications of radio frequency identification technology (RFID) in hospitals move an important area of study in the healthcare. Road Freight Transport : Transport Purchasing and Environmental ImpactsArmstrong, Amrith January 2014 (has links)
This paper on the environmental impacts of transport purchasing in road freight is to highlight how the adaptive capability of transport chains are affected through collaboration and the aim for sustainability through political regulations and societal demands. This paper is divided into a theoretical framework and an empirical study, followed by the analysis, conclusions and discussions based on the framework and empirical study. The theoretical framework will discuss the different aspects of road freight transport which impact the environment and show the interdependencies of each aspect. The analysis will highlight the empirical chapter with a comparison of the theoretical framework in order to make substantial conclusions. Conclusions among others are that standardization is needed although flexibility and agility is also needed. By standardizing processes, routine measures can be implemented and it creates a sense of certainty within the company. Agility and flexibility can be achieved by adding modular processes which can be implemented if the need for customization arises.Governmental involvement is necessary for the development of infrastructure to minimize traffic congestion and improve the infrastructure for increased reliability, accessibility, and flexibility. By developing the rail infrastructure, a larger share of goods can be transferred via railway and thus reduce the environmental impacts of road freight through intermodal transportation. / Program: Industrial Engineering – Logistics Management

Previous issue date: 2015-02-05 / The value creation of the textile sector organizations to consumers has led them to improve their levels of logistics services based on the train of thought of general strategic Porter (1989) and competitive factors proposed by Ferdows and Mayer (1990). In this sense, this study aimed to verify the creation of value through strategic alignment of competitive priorities between customers and suppliers in the textile chain, addition to investigating the importance of the three main pillars of the strategic management of logistics, transport, storage and reporting system that relationship. For this, we used in the first phase an exploratory research study was qualitative, with the collection instrument, a roadmap consisting of questions, spontaneous. In the second phase a qualitative study with scripted questions stimulated using projective and association analysis techniques. Applied at 12 institutions between paired six companies and six customers suppliers. Data processed by the content analysis revealed the first phase. That for both customer and supplier, the quality was considered the main criterion of alignment. Regarding the second criterion: was evident in the analysis of results for the customer has been low cost and to the vendor was the speed of delivery. Data analysis in the second phase, showed that among the three main pillars of strategic logistics management information system was the most important for value creation between companies. Because of these results, we show that the quality in shipping, and delivery of products, as well as an efficient information system, is most relevant as factors that induce the creation of value between customer and supplier in the textile chain. As a conclusion of this study, it was understood that the results serve as a warning to all managers in the textile chain to make better know their customers because the competitive factors when aligned lead to value creation, increased consumption and increased financial results.

Unknown Date (has links)
In recent years, ”Speed” is a critical factor determining the competitive edge of globalized enterprises. For this reason, a successful manufacturer must first carefully maintain its competitive edge and do its best to increase its core resources for existence before seeking for cooperation of other companies in different areas of different countries to carry out R&D activity, design, manufacturing, assembling, marketing and after-sales service. When these companies cooperatively achieved the complete process of production based on a world industrial labor division system, they created a cooperative method with features of flexibility, speediness and competitiveness. And this is a start of global logistics models. Among these global logistics models, information system is regarded as a hub. With a complete information system, the manufacturer may collect and systematize the information of its marketing, production, stock and delivery coming from different countries and may also make analyses, predictions and responses on this systematized information.
The notebook computer industry is now regarded as one of potential industries in Taiwan. What this industry is faced with is the fierce competition on the global market. A notebook computer manufacturer, who lacks the ability to manage global logistics, cannot obtain orders from world leading buyers of reputable systems. In other words, world logistics management is a very important issue to OEM manufacturers of notebook computers. In this research, the first focus is placed on discussion and analysis made, in accordance with related literature, on the framework of information system built on global logistics management models submitted by domestic and overseas modern scholars. From this discussion and analysis is drawn an operating model of global logistics management. Besides, accompanying an analysis given to the existing problem and an observation given to the present situation of this industry, general global logistics models that meet with the demand of domestic notebook computer industry and the framework of information system built on feasible global logistics management models is submitted. Finally, verification is given to this feasibility through the erection of a model system. This information system is expected to make information flow more easily run in the supply chain over structural barriers and the entire supply chain serve as a simulated enterprise so that products can be more quickly put on the market and customers are satisfied with the least cost and the lowest stock rate.
