Embedded Madness: Mad Narrators and Possible Worlds

Madness has long been a popular theme for literature, featuring as a trope of horror, mystery, tragedy and comedy genres in varying degrees of amplitude. The topic has provided a significant access point for analysing historical, socio-political and cultural issues as it addresses controversial themes of alienation and criminality as well as philosophical theories of perception and consciousness. As a result, studies on the representation of madness in literature have been dominated by historical approaches that focus directly on social, political, philosophical and psychoanalytical interpretive models. Comparatively little has been done to analyse madness in literature from a narratological perspective. It is for this reason that I will conduct a narratological study on the impact of madness on narrative and fictional world structures. I am specifically interested in the way in which madness can be embedded across multiple levels of the narrative and the effect that this has on readers’ imaginative and interpretive processes. Close readings of Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club (1996) Bret Easton-Ellis’ American Psycho (1991) and John Banville’s The Book of Evidence (1989) will uncover some of the techniques that are used to embed madness into the textual and imaginative structures of a narrative, and will demonstrate how this works to deceive and challenge the reader. I will demonstrate the need for an expansion of terms within the narratological model that can cope specifically with the theme of madness.

Commodifying counterculture: William Gaines, EC Comics, Mad magazine, and the rise of the corporate anti-establishment

Founded as Educational Comics in 1944 and rebranding itself as Entertaining Comics a few years later, EC Comics would publish several comic book titles, such as Tales from the Crypt, and the magazine, Mad. While the success of these publications can be measured by a legacy of directors, writers, comedians, and others in the entertainment industry who describe EC's properties as an early inspiration for them, the company itself cannot be seen as equally successful in the business world. Though its publications have left permanent fingerprints on American popular culture, the company represents an interesting example of a company that never became 'big.' In short, EC provides an interesting contrast to standard narratives about entertainment companies and properties. With scholarship in this field typically analyzing how a company started off small and grew into a larger corporation, EC is an example of a company that started small and remained small as a subsidiary of a larger corporation. In addition to this dissertation functioning as a critical corporate biography of EC's evolution, it also examines how U.S. entertainment has changed as mass audiences have become increasingly fractured as new forms of entertainment technologies have emerged. Overall, this dissertation aims to show how standard humanities approaches to analyzing popular culture can be augmented by also investigating the business practices and work cultures that shaped an entertainment property.

Risk, innovation and BSE : cattle farmer perspectives on an agricultural and health emergency

This ethnographic research examines how farmers survive agricultural crises by exploring reactions of Saskatchewan beef and dairy farmers to the Canadian BSE crisis. As this study unfolded it became clear that the BSE crisis is only one of many recent crises that have been changing the face of Saskatchewan rural communities and family farms. Producers see a crisis in their inability to achieve their own measures of success in both the life and business of farming. This includes a greater need for off-farm work, a decline in rural community life and values, and a shift away from farming as a desirable livelihood.<p> The BSE crisis has highlighted the risky nature of the contemporary agriculture industry, both for farmers' livelihoods and for food safety. Farmers' initial strategies to address the BSE crisis were precautionary and conservative in nature: minimal enterprise adaptation while waiting out markets. As the crisis continued, producers worked to bring their experience and understanding to bear on changing the structure of the agricultural system. Attempts at change were not often successful. This was attributed to a lack of initiative by government and powerful players, such as the multi-national packing industry that profited from the crisis situation and used the crisis to consolidate power within the value chain. Producers felt that they were paying too much for risks that were beyond their control. The government support they needed was not in line with their structural concerns; risky pre-BSE structures have not been appreciably changed. Uncertainty and risk remain high for the average farmer.<p> There appears to be a growing distrust in powerful institutions that farmers depend on, and a consequent disengagement from government surveillance and regulatory policies. This foreshadows possible serious repercussions in food security and food safety, issues that are still unsettled regarding BSE in Canada. This research indicates a need for greater transparency and public knowledge pathways to reduce uncertainty and allow individuals to better understand and manage emerging risk complexes. Increased democratic space within food and agricultural systems for participation by producer and rural publics would help to balance out government rationalities that may not fully account for culturally mediated understandings of risk and action at the farm level.

Experiences Labelled Psychotic: A Settler’s Autoethnography beyond Psychosic Narrative

This autoethnography uses narrative inquiry within an anticolonial theoretical framework. As a White Italian male settler living on Turtle Island, I bring survivor experience to psychiatric definitions of “psychosis,” or what I call psychosic narrative, and to broader literatures for the purpose of decolonizing “mental” relations. Using reflexive critiques, including feminist antiracism, I question my own privileges as I consider the possibilities of Mad culture to disturb authorizations of practices like forced electroshock and drugging. Using journals, salient themes of experience are identified, including “delusion,” “psychosis,” “madness,” and “illness,” especially as they appear in texts about politics, culture, and theory. A temporally rigorous narrative approach to my readings allows for a self-reflexive writing on such themes in relation with antiracist anticolonial resistance. Thus a White psychiatric survivor resistance to psychiatry and its social (local) history is related to the problematic of global Western neoliberal heteropatriarchy in psychological institutional texts. Survivor testimonies bring critical madness and disability theories as they pertain to racialization and constructions of sex/uality and gender. Rather than present a comprehensive analysis, this narrative inquiry is generated from the process of research as it was experienced in order to represent and question its epistemological grounds.

A Virtual Platform for System-level Architecture Simulation and Evaluation

With complexities of Systems-on-Chip rising almost daily, the system designers have been searching for new methodology that can handle given complexities with increased productivity and decreased times-to-market. The obvious solution that comes to mind is increasing the level of abstraction. However, the most important things that system designers care about are system architectures (components topology), HW/SW performance, and the communication protocols. System designer has to make decisions on these factors in a very short time. Furthermore, the transaction level model (TLM) can satisfy the requests on simulation speed and the information that system designer need. We implement a TLM virtual prototype platform with SystemC composing with the variable wrappers. The basic modules: ISS interface, user-define modules and a flexible bus. Based on the infrastructures, a much faster modeling process of the system can be achieved in this thesis. Finally, the platform will run the whole-system-simulation to verify the functional model and collect the dynamic information on the buses and IPs to diagnose the bottle-neck of the system.

Structural framework and seismic geomorphology of the Cretaceous beneath the Mad Dog Area, deep to ultradeep waters Gulf of Mexico

Recent drilling of deep stratigraphy in subsalt offshore Gulf of Mexico has revealed the presence of thick, amalgamated, Cretaceous siliciclastic reservoirs with the potential to become valid exploration targets. Similar to the Lower Tertiary deepwater play, the significant down-dip distance (> 400 km) from the source deltaics, the data gap across the modern structurally complex salt-tectonics-dominated slope and the difficulties of imaging subsalt stratigraphy pose challenges for the construction of meaningful deepwater system models to aid in exploration and appraisal efforts. A 3D seismic dataset in the Mad Dog field at the basinward end of the modern allochthonous salt canopy and outboard of the Sigsbee Escarpment offers the opportunity to study the nature of the deep stratigraphy at central positions in the basin. The nature of the Cretaceous sedimentary system has been investigated through detailed structural and seismic geomorphologic mapping. An early syndepositional contractional event has been identified and temporally associated with Mesozoic emplacement of a deep salt sheet. These events are masked by the major Neogene-age phase of fold amplification that dominates the present-day subsalt structural framework. Ponded-basin deepwater sedimentation processes control early phases of deposition in the Cretaceous Mad Dog area and sediment-gravity flows are deposited as complexes of low sinuosity amalgamated channelized deposits in roughly-confined sediment pathways. Ponded fills show internal lateral accretion architectures that grow sigmoid in nature as the migrating systems interact with the approaching minibasin margins making evident the structural control on sediment architecture. Later phases of deposition are characterized by slightly sinuous feeder channels with multiple lobe development at their terminus. Variable directions of sediment source pathways indicate a linear-sourced slope apron depositional model for these systems. In addition to the more structured morphologic elements, there were also pervasive mass-transport processes active, presumably triggered by Mesozoic halokinesis. Data in sparse deep wells in the GoM that penetrate the Cretaceous suggest that the Late Cretaceous deepwater depositional system was composed of coarse-grained high density gravity flows. The geometries seen in seismic beneath the Mad Dog area support the existence of such a basinwardly extensive deepwater fan systems developed during the Cretaceous, and the low sinuosity channel geometries and small length:width ratio and amalgamated nature of fan lobes suggest that these systems may have indeed been high-density in nature. / text

Quantitative seismic geomorphology of a confined channel complex, southern Atwater fold belt, Gulf of Mexico, U.S.A.

The structures along the Atwater Fold belt form important deep-water hydrocarbon traps in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The purpose of this study is to map and quantify the morphology, sedimentology and architecture of Plio-Pleistocene basin floor fan systems outboard of the Poseidon Minibasin, located along the Atwater deep-water fold belt (mid-Miocene to Pliocene), and apply that information to determine the temporal and spatial nature of the fill and its implications as a reservoir analog. The data set includes ~2200 km sq. of 3D seismic data, along with information from several wells. Wireline logs show the Tertiary age deposits outboard of the Sigsbee Escarpment to be several hundred feet thick, sharp-based, dominantly coarse-grained (sandy) but fining up cycles composed of sandy basin floor fans, mass transport complexes and leveed channels developed in a confined setting within deep-water “valleys.” The largest valley formed in five main stages: initiating from narrow channel incision, widening through lateral incision and sidewall slumping, straightening, and finally flooding and infilling. The valley system is ~20,000 feet across and ~ 1,400 feet deep, with what look like well-developed levees ranging from 700 to 1300 feet at their thickest point extending ~19000 feet away from the channel. This system is underlain by a ~700 foot thick mass transport complex and overlain by younger, low sinuosity leveed channel systems. Both of these systems appear to have been sourced by large submarine drainages, originating from a shelf edge sediment source system to feed the rugose slope with deep-water channel pathways uninhibited by salt wall inflation at the time of valley deposition. Major phases of salt thrusting along the southern edge of the Atwater were contemporaneous with the formation of these large, through-going valley system, which appear to be associated with the period of sheet thickening and development of monoclinal basinward dip related to rafted mini-basin docking. Well log signatures show evidence for armored clay drapes along the valley margins as well as a flattening of lateral accretion packages toward the distal end of the system. The flattening of these packages seems to signal proximity to the fan terminus, which would serve as an important indicator of spatial extent of plays in deep-water. / text
