Contribution à l’utilisation d’un SIG et des outils d’optimisation dans l’aménagement d’infrastructures linéaires durables / Contribution to use GIS and optimization tools in the planning of sustainable linear infrastructure

Bouzar, Hayet 02 October 2012 (has links)
This thesis concerns a new methodological approach to decision support for efficient participative governance territories. The proposed approach is essentially multidisciplinary, based on an appropriate combination optimization tools, Geomatics and Communication. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in spite of their performance tools for visualization and simulation of spatial phenomena and rapid development in recent years, remain static and limited in the hierarchy of solutions based on a multitude of criteria. The methodology proposed is an appropriate combination of remote sensing, GIS, Multicriteria Analysis to enhance their benefits and minimize their limitations especially in support of the decision aid in planning linear projects. The Multicriteria Analysis (MCA) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used for the integration of criteria, analysis, classification and visualization variants for better decision making. The hybrid system (GIS-AMC) is associated with the use of Technical Information and Communication Technologies (Internet, Mobile, Social Networks: Twitter, Facebook) to cover and support all communication between different actors to implement and provide participative governance territories.

The mad scene from Handel's Orlando: a new attempt at staging

Spencer, Reid Donald 05 1900 (has links)
There is an increasing interest in the operas of Georg Frideric Handel, both from a scholarly perspective, and that of the modern, professional opera company. Producers of Handelian opera have moved away from productions similar to those staged in Halle, Germany, in the 1920s, which featured vastly reduced recitative and stripped the da capo aria to a single statement of the 'A' section. Modern productions have restored Handel's musical text, and in addition have attempted to recreate the original dramatic conditions and ethos of the work. The problem faced by the Halle producers still exists, however. How does the modern producer satisfy the expectations of the modern audience, while remaining faithful to the intention of the composer and the original production. This paper will investigate a possible approach to staging Handelian opera, with specific reference to the 'Mad Scene' from Handel's opera Orlando. Included in this examination will be a discussion of eighteenth-century British staging practices. These elements will be considered in the light of stage design and scenic practices of the period. / Arts, Faculty of / Music, School of / Additional material: 1 videocassette (Koerner Library). / Graduate

A Political Analysis of Mental “Disability” in U.S. Immigration Courts

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Despite the changing social, legal, and political context in influencing the definition of mental disability, medical scholarship has maintained its position as the primary reference to interpret mental disability in the immigration system. This preliminary study examines the role of medical scholarship in attributing to the exclusion of undesired immigrants through its definition of mental disability. This paper focuses upon immigration cases to determine the patterns that emerge when immigration intersects with mental disability. The data consists of four immigration court cases in 1951-1985, 1986-2005, 2006-2015, which mark the shift of immigration policy in the United States of America (US). The court documents are collected from websites that provide online access to these documents. The examination of the cases focuses on three important criterions: a summary of cases, mental disability circumstances, and judges’ considerations. This paper uses the analysis of political deviance in courtroom settings to get an understanding of the shift in the definition of mental disability in the immigration court by tracing economic, political, and social environments that are intertwined and relevant in creating a ‘mental disabilitiy’ definition. This study suggests that medical scholarship has historically become powerful in shaping mental disability as a form of social control. From historical and case analysis, there have been changes in policies and processes toward immigrants appear to take place in the aftermath of major events—World War II, AIDS epidemic, 9/11 terrorist attack, and now Covid-19 pandemic. Preliminary examination of documented cases suggests future analysis could look at how these major events shape immigration processes and policies that more heavily rely on definitions of mental illness and use competency to stand trial proceedings to indefinitely detain people. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Justice Studies 2020

Analyzing Ann Quin’s and Kate Millett’s Forgotten Works Through a Mad Reading Practice and Feminist Literary Criticism

Harrison, Sarah 11 1900 (has links)
In my thesis, I engage with recent scholarship in Mad Studies directed towards introducing a Mad reading practice or Mad theory to the discipline of English and academia more broadly. I utilize Mad theory and feminist literary criticism in order to frame my analysis of two forgotten queer Madwomen—British author Ann Quin (1936-1973) and American author, artist, and activist Kate Millett (1934-Present). I consider how Quin’s novel Three (1966) and Millett’s autobiography Flying (1974), as experimental texts exploring bisexuality and polyamory que(e)ry heteronormative monogamy and patriarchal literary convention. I also posit that Quin’s “The Unmapped Country” (1973) and Millett’s The Loony-Bin Trip (1990) deconstruct a perceived tension in feminist literary criticism surrounding whether the figure of the Madwoman is a subversive or silenced figure. In using a Mad reading practice, my analysis focuses on the intersections of sanism with other forces of oppression, as well as how sanist epistemic violence dissuades critically analyzing Mad individuals’ creative or personal narratives as theoretical and political texts. Moreover, I gesture towards the overlooked social exclusions produced by sanist epistemic violence, such as forced institutionalization, unemployment, criminalisation, and homelessness, which suggests the ethical importance of incorporating Mad theory into everyday practice. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Högfrekvenshandel – Ett hot mot de finansiella marknaderna? / High Frequency Trading - A threat against financial markets?

Lönnmar, David, Vadsmo, Kristoffer January 2013 (has links)
High frequency trading has during the last couple of years grown to become a significant force in the financial markets, and therefore it has also gotten a lot of media attention. This media attention intensified on the 6 th of May 2010 when the so called "Flash Crash" occurred at the Dow Jones index in New York and affected markets all over the world. Our intention with this bachelor thesis is to critically examine high frequency trading as a phenomenon and the discussion that is taking place concerning further regulation of the trading. This will be done through an initial period of literature studies that will be complemented with in-depth interviews with different players in the market. Our results show that high frequency trading doesn´t come with such great negative effects as media would like to imply. The research that has been done on the subject indicates that the trading mainly adds positive effects in the form of increased liquidity and decreased volatility. The thesis will also address todays regulatory situation and analyse the proposals for additional regulation that has been discussed on an EU-level. Our analysis shows that many of the discussed proposals are directly misguided and doesn´t address the real problem – a situation that is struggling with unclear roles concerning supervision and monitoring.

[en] MAD MEN: A CULTURAL HISTORY OF ADVERTISING / [pt] MAD MEN: UMA HISTÓRIA CULTURAL DA PUBLICIDADE

MARIANA AYRES TAVARES 30 May 2019 (has links)
[en] The present work proposes an analysis on advertising from the television series Mad Men (2007-2015). The study articulates issues between culture and advertising, more precisely, about the ways in which the publicity narrative appropriates certain cultural values in the process of production of ads. Mad Men draws a broad panorama of the main changes of the profession in the 1960, being an excellent scenario for an analysis of the internal changes to advertising agencies. The research aims to understand the historical events of that time and their reflections in the main ads created by the Agency of fiction and analyze the changes that happen in the professional advertising agencies represented in Mad Men. In this way, the research highlights the contribution of the show to build a history of advertising activity, acting as a legitimizer of the profession. And, in addition, through the cultural representations identified in ads, seeks to study how the advertising activity can be, among other things, a project to capture the collective imagination.

Développement de nouveaux outils pour la détermination de la structure de macromolécules biologiques par diffraction aux rayons X : application aux protéines membranaires et aux grands complexes protéiques / Developement of new tools for biological macromolecular structure determination by X-ray diffraction : application to membrane proteins and to large protein complexes.

Talon, Romain 06 June 2012 (has links)
This thesis aims to develop lanthanide complexes for solving biological macromolecular structures, especially membrane proteins and large protein complexes. Lanthanide complexes are composed of a lanthanide atom and a chemical ligand, which provides non-covalent binding to protein surfaces. Incorporated in protein crystals, they make up the substructure, determined by the widely-used de novo phasing methods, needed for solving the whole protein structure. The first part of the present work shows a study of the luminescent lanthanide picolinate complexes family, easily detectable in protein crystals. First, we defined the conditions in which the known lanthanide tris-dipicolinate can be used and we examined its possible ability to promote protein crystallization (supramolecular effect). Secondly, a newly developed lanthanide tris hydroxymethyltriazoledipicolinate complex "[Ln(TDPA)3]3-", derived from this previous complex, allowed us to obtain a very precise de novo phasing for solving the high-resolution structure of the hen egg white lysozyme and the thaumatin from Thaumatococcus daniellii. Besides, various ligands for these new complexes were synthetized by click chemistry, enabling us to create both unique complexes outfit and hybrid complexes. We have shown that this new complexes family presents a better affinity for proteins allowing their use at very low concentrations. Tests conducted with those LnTDPA have also evidenced the importance of complex global charge to explain the supramolecular effect. Third, a caged tripicolinate, the LnTNTPA, was evaluated. Characterized by a neutrally charged chemical cage, we have shown that this new luminescent complex is the only one of the picolinate complexes family that can be used in the presence of divalent ions. In the second part of this thesis, we describe the use of lanthanide complexes for phasing large multimeric proteins by de novo phasing methods. First, the structure of the 480 kDa dodecameric aminopeptidase PhTET1-12s was solved at 4 Å resolution by using the europium tris-dipicolinate which demonstrates that the lanthanide complexes can be used to obtain an accurate phasing, even at low resolution. Secondly, the lanthanide complexes from medical imaging also helped to solve the structures of three new homotetrameric enzymes from the malate dehydrogenases family. Those structures provide new insights into halophilic adaptation. Finally, by using these enzymes as a library of chemical functions, we developed a new methodological approach for a better understanding of the precise binding modes of those lanthanide complexes.

The past in the present and the present in the past : representing history and performing memory on television and in everyday life

Rosenheck, Mabel Meigs 26 October 2010 (has links)
Moving from the basic assumption that media and television are vital sites of memory, pivotal spaces in which we learn about the past, this thesis argues that the most productive and progressive representations of the past are those that allow the past to interact with the present. Yet the past is not simply a representation in the present, it is also performed as cultural memory. One of the key concepts here is the idea that if we do indeed find historical knowledge on television and in everyday life as well as in museums and textbooks, then we might apply the concepts, roles and institutions of the museum, concepts like the archive and the curator, to television and historical consciousness in everyday life. Through this logic television programs are archives and audiences are curators, selecting music and fashions from the representation of the past and using them, performing them in everyday life. To explore this, I begin with textual analyses of the television shows American Dreams and Mad Men. Examinations of music and fashion in each show then gives way to inquiries into how the musical and sartorial artifacts contained in each program are brought out into everyday life. While these chapters primarily consider gendered histories and feminist cultural memories, I conclude with a consideration of racial histories, silenced memories and how unique juxtapositions can point to alternative archives and repertoires. / text

Ekonomiska incitament och visselblåsning : En komparativ studie / Financial incentives and whistle-blowing : a comparative study

Svedjeholm, Christoffer January 2017 (has links)

Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum

Dewald, John 01 January 2017 (has links)
Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum is the first edition of a book for all audiences but especially targeting children. The story follows Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum as they explore wonderland, encountering famous characters including the Queen of Hearts, the Catepillar, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the White Rabbit, as well as a set of new characters at well. The account is entirely fictional, and any character or event that bares any resemblance to a real person or something that happened in real life is completely and only a coincidence. I would like to give a special thanks to all my friends that helped in the writing process; I would write an extensive list, but not everyone has a facebook and I don't want to spell anyone's name wrong. Thanks guys. The book is meant to be a fun and light read; enjoy.
