International Financial Markets

Hua, Wei 18 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation consists of two essays: one looks at the cross-country variations in volume-price variability relationship and cultural and other country factors, and the other looks at cause and effects of large one-day price changes in commodity futures. The first essay presented in Chapter 1 investigates the effect of cultural and other country factors on the dynamic relation between market-wide trading activity and price variability in 20 countries. The results show that individualism and masculinity are positively related to volume-variability relation; other country factors including information asymmetry, financial development, short sale and age distribution are also closely related to the volume-variability relation. Specifically, the return-variability relation is stronger in less financially-developed countries with short-sale constraints and high information asymmetry. The second essay presented in Chapter 2 examines the causes and effects of large price changes in 26 commodity futures. The results indicate that announcements of macroeconomic news, the maturity effect, and the seasonal effect can explain the futures price movements of food (non-grains), grain, and livestock better than those of energy and metal. Without controlling for other factors, I find some support for the overreaction theory, especially following negative large price changes in closing. However, controlling for macro factors or market conditions, there is no support for overreactions.

Evaluation of Semantic Applications for Enterprises / Hodnocení sémantických aplikací pro podnikové prostředí

Nekvasil, Marek January 2010 (has links)
Broader and broader areas of application deployment are covered by semantic technologies recently and in the meantime their scope is increasing constantly. The possibilities of semantic applications are now so vast that they cannot be judged as a single market segment any more. The business skepticism that arises due to the uncertainty of investments in such technologies is only augmented by these differences and picking up on that this thesis concentrates on the aspects that can enable and evaluate not only the economic efficiency of engaging the semantic technologies in a business environment but also the effectiveness of doing so. This work concentrates on the ways of how to prove the differences amongst semantic applications, define their distinct segments based on use-case, and subsequently identify their Critical Success Factors and evaluate them against the real conditions of the applications' deployment with the participation of people involved in their development. Following the results of these interactions this thesis presents an innovative approach that enables to construct models for judging the maturity of enterprises for the deployment of the respective applications including the actual construction of these models for all the identified applications' use-cases segments. Moreover, in a later part of the work the evaluation using these models is demonstrated on AQUA application (outcome of a project the author did personally partake in) along with sketching additional specifics that may help the timely assessment of semantics in certain cases. The results presented in later chapters are supported by the underlying background researches in the fields of Semantic Technologies and IT assessment both of whose state-of-the-art methods are described here. Usability of the current standardized methods (such as those used in COBIT) for assessing semantic applications is also considered with respect to the lack of other best practices in business deployment of semantics.

The capability maturity model as a criminal justice process improvement paradigm

Doss, Daniel Adrian 07 1900 (has links)
Background: The administrators, managers, and leaders of criminal justice organizations experience a plethora of processes that impact the strategic, tactical, and operational facets of their respective organizations. Sound processes are central to effectively and efficiently managing criminal justice organizations and for facilitating the optimal operations of the organization. Such management characteristics are necessary to render public services towards the goals of deterring crime and maintaining societal order. Administrating and managing criminal justice organizations involves paradigms that favor process improvement and quality of processes. Existing methods include the Compstat paradigm Total Quality Management, business process management, business process improvement, business process reengineering, standards, legislation, policy, and Six Sigma. However, such paradigms not approach process improvement from the unique perspective of process maturity as a foundational basis. Additionally, no solitary foundational basis exists that uniquely addresses organizational process improvement issues, regarding criminal justice entities, from the perspective of evolutionary process maturation through time. This research examines the potential of adapting the Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMi) as a foundational process improvement framework among criminal justice organizations. Within the CMMi framework, process improvement begins from a state of random, ad hoc processes and culminates in a state of highly optimized processes. Through time, process maturation occurs through five primary stages sequentially: 1) random, 2) managed, 3) defined/specific, 4) quantitatively managed, and 5) optimized. This research explores the potential of leveraging the CMMi paradigm as a form of organizational process improvement within the criminal justice domain. Scope of the Study: This research investigated the potential for adapting the Capability Maturity Model (Integrated) (CMMi) within the criminal justice domain. A derivative maturity model framework, the Criminal Justice Maturity Model (CJMM), was crafted using the CMMi concept as its foundational premise. A Likert scale survey was implemented to investigate the perceptions of personnel regarding process improvement initiatives and their work settings. This study was constrained to the criminal justice domains of the states of Alabama and Mississippi. Data processing encompassed demographic descriptions of the survey instrument and the received responses, ANOVA, Chi-Square analysis, and the Cronbach Method. Stratifications involved separating the survey responses into classifications of Alabama versus Mississippi entities, urban versus rural entities, and management versus non-management entities. Findings and Conclusions: The conclusions of this research failed to show that all five levels of the maturity model framework appear to be separately perceived among the respondents. Therefore, per each individual stage of the maturity model framework, this research failed to show conclusively that the complete maturity model framework is adaptable among administrative settings in the criminal justice domain and that process maturity issues among respondent settings are addressed via a process maturity framework. Because this research failed to show the perceived characteristics of all five maturity levels of the maturity model framework separately, it is concluded that the criminal justice administrative settings of the respondents do not conform completely to the tenets of the CMMi paradigm. Future studies were recommended to pursue additional approaches of this research project. This study represents an initial starting point from which several future endeavors may be initiated. / Criminology and Security Science / D. Litt. et Phil. (Police Science)

Digital Transformation of Small Tech Reselling Firms : A Multiple Case Study in Portugal

Capinha, João, Torehov, Jacob January 2019 (has links)
In today’s global society, organizations are facing the challenge of ever-increasing customer demands as a consequence of benefits posed by digital technology. Not only has it led to a market of fierce competition and the inevitable pursuit for competitive advantages, but it also has required actors to explore and exploit the agile development of digitization. Organizational initiatives to harvest the benefits of digital technology and address the challenges have been referred to as “Digital Transformation”. The concept is running rampant through all industries and sectors, and no firm is any longer immune to its impacts. In the context of small and medium-sized enterprises, they are commonly referred to as being in a predicament of inadequate resources and limited capabilities to digitally transform. This study aims to shed light on how leaders of small enterprises, with their current conditions of digital transformation, can address key challenges through the use of digital transformation strategies. More specifically, a multiple case study was conducted based on the small tech reselling market of Portugal. Both leaders and employees were interviewed and asked about their current challenges, what efforts are made to digitally transform the companies, and how the leadership contribute to that end. From this, the paper suggests ways of managing these challenges and at the same time incubate digital transformation through assessment and measurement models.

Does obesity affect the accuracy of age-at-death estimation using the pubic symphysis and auricular surface?

Unknown Date (has links)
This study examines whether obesity affects the accuracy of estimating age-at-death as measured by the age-related changes of the pubic symphysis and auricular surfaces. I scored the hip bones of 119 adults of normal body mass and 126 obese adults (total n = 254) using the SucheyBrooks (1990) method for the pubic symphysis and the Buckberry and Chamberlain (2002) method for the auricular surface. Compared to normal weight individuals, obese individuals exhibited greater inaccuracy in age-at-death estimates when aged from the auricular surface, but not the pubic symphysis. However, age was estimated with less precision in obese individuals using both methods. Obese males are more likely to be aged inaccurately than obese females. The pubic symphysis method may be the preferred method when estimating age in obese individuals, especially males, but forensic anthropologists should use caution when assessing age-at-death in obese adults using either method. / by Jessica L. Análise das relações entre governança corporativa e governança de tecnologia da informação em organizações brasileiras / Analysis of relationship between corporate governance and information technology governance in Brazilian organizations

Gonçalves, Andréa de Paiva 27 November 2012 (has links)
With the increase on business complexity it\'s clear that mechanisms of corporate governance (CG) are needed to protect investors and the financial systems of the countries. In this environment of increasing complexity, organizations make use of information technology (IT) to provide support and assist in the leverage and in the control of their business. Therefore companies need to extend corporate governance already exercised in the business areas to the IT area through a model of IT governance. This study was justified by the importance of understanding the relation between corporate governance and IT governance on the organizations, considering that it\'s observed the emergence of the need for models and tools to assist in the establishment of this relationship, ensuring return on investments in the IT area and evaluating the advantages that the use of technology can bring to organizations. As main objective, this study tried to identify the relationship between corporate governance and governance of information technology maturity in organizations that operate in Brazil. For that indices were designed to measure the maturity level of corporate governance (IGOVCORP) and IT Governance (IGOVTI) and to check their possible relationships, the database was segmented into 3 main groups according to the following conditions: IGOVCORP = IGOVTI; IGOVCORP> IGOVTI and IGOVCORP <IGOVTI. Moreover, it was possible to describe the organizational features of each of these groups. The survey covered 160 companies that operate in Brazil and the research model was built from a theoretical review on the themes of corporate governance and IT governance, including the study of models that seek to assess the maturity of these. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaire and were treated and analyzed statistically. As results this research proved the moderate correlation between IGOVCORP and IGOVTI and verified that more than half of the companies studied showed better maturity level of IT governance than corporate governance, contradicting most studies identified during the preparation of this thesis providing evidences that IT governance is not presented on practice as a reflection or subset of corporate governance.

A maturity model proposal applied to servitizing manufacturing companies.

Alvarez, Rodrigo Loureiro Prado 05 April 2012 (has links)
The growth of services participation in the gross domestic product in most countries has been calling out the attention of many researchers and companies over the last years. Consumer durable companies that have an after-sales service for repairing and do maintenance of their own products, for example, start using this type of service, initially recognized as a \"necessary evil\", to be closer to the final customer and thereby identify new business niches that will differentiate them from the competitors, becoming a business solution provider instead of holding a manufacturing image. The sale of services other than just a simple after-sales becomes interesting due to some factors such as generally allow a more attractive business gross margin, by adding value to the product and keeping customer loyalty. However, the inclusion of new services requires a correct understanding of companys own strategy. Based on this context, this work aims to propose a maturity model for companies of consumer durables which desire to add services to their portfolio, readjusting the way the firm interacts with external (partners, market and customers) and internal (employees) environments by servitizing in a four-phased approach. With that in mind, it is important to previously explore the differences between their vision when the main focus is product sale (product-dominant logic) and when service becomes more important (service-dominant logic). In this way, four different companies have been selected in order to conduct case studies that allow a more detailed comprehension of these changes, developing, applying and validating the proposed model, besides pointing out potential gaps that might exist in this process for each of them. The case studies have been conducted by interviewing a variety of professionals from different areas in each company and that were compared later with documents and existing processes, in order to have information triangulated. By making use of this model, it becomes possible to understand steps to be taken and critical resources that need to be developed by each manufacturing company under a servitization process, as a way of highlighting the path over this evolutionary model. This work was conducted at the Department of Naval and Ocean Engineering of the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil, in conjunction with the Department of Industrial Engineering also from USP.

A influência de raça, sexo e idade ao abate sobre a qualidade da carne de Nelore e Braford / Influence of breed, sex and age on carcass characteristics and beef quality of Nellore and Braford cattle

Nogueira, Kátia Leal 16 February 2007 (has links)
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of breed, sex and age on various carcass traits in beef, principally tenderness in steers and heifers of Braford and the Nellore breeds between the age of 24 and 36 months. One hundred and eighty seven animals were slaughtered and data for carcass weight and pH were collected. Following a 24 hours chilling period pH was measured together with the carcass yield, rib eye area and fat depth were also taken. Samples were from the Longissimus dorsi of each carcass were taken and thus aged for 7 days and then analyzed for purge, cooking losses and shear force value. Breed, age and sex influenced weights of hot carcass, 24 hour pH, rib eye area, fat depth, cooking losses and shear force. Breed did not however influence the hot carcass yield and sex did not cause any effect on the pH of hot carcasses or purge losses. It was noted that Braford heifers presented meat of superior tenderness than that of the Nellore, however between steers no difference was detected. Animals of the younger age groups also produced beef more tender than these from the older age groups.

Estudos da maturação do fruto e das sementes de Physalis peruviana L. e do teste de germinação / Studies on the maturation of the fruit and seeds of Physalis peruviana L. and germination test

Diniz, Fábio Oliveira 04 December 2018 (has links)
The cultivation of cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) is a promising alternative for the farmers who are dedicated to the production of exotic fruit, the \"small fruits\" segment, due to the valorization of the fruit, which has several organoleptic and functional qualities. However, information about the crop under Brazilian soil and climate conditions is still scarce, especially in relation to the fruit and seed maturation processes, so that the appropriate time for harvest can be indicated, considering the quality of the fruits and seeds and, not least, the study of the ideal conditions for the seed germination test, since this test, besides being used to help in the identification of the physiological maturity of the seeds, yours results are parameter for comparison the seed quality of the lots and for seed marketing. Therefore, the present research was developed out with the objective of evaluating the light, temperature and substrate requirements for the germination test and to study the maturation of fruits and seeds, and the incidence of fungi on seed of Physalis peruviana L., according to the moment of flowering of the plant and fruit age. The research was conducted between february 2016 and november 2017, in the Laboratories of Seeds Analysis (LAS), Analysis of Images (LAI), Post-Harvesting of Horticultural Plants (LPCPH) and Pathology Seeds (LPS), belonging to the Departments of Crop Science and Phytopathology and Nematology, Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture, University of São Paulo (USP/ESALQ), in Piracicaba, São Paulo. For the seed germination test, different light and temperature supplies were evaluated first, using a termo-gradient table regulated with nine temperature ranges (ranging from 15 °C to 35 °C) and two alternate 20-30 °C and 15-35 °C, with eight hours of photoperiod and in the total absence of light. After the light and temperature requirements were established, the substrates for seed germination were studied: blotter paper sheets (upon paper), sand (between sand) and vermiculite (between vermiculite). In the maturation and seed health studies, two flowering moments were considered, at 55 and 105 days after transplanting (DAT) of the plants, and in each of these moments, the flowers were marked in the anthesis and the respective fruits and seeds evaluated at 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after anthesis (DAA).The germination of the seeds of Physalis peruviana L. occurs in a wide temperature range (15 to 30,2 °C), with temperatures 25 °C constant and 20-30 °C alternating, with eight hours of light. The sand substrate (between sand) is more suitable and, alternatively, paper and vermiculite may be used. The germination test evaluations can be performed on the 7th day (first count) and on the 14th day (final count) after the test installation. The moment of flowering and the development stage of the fruit influence the qualitative characteristics of the fruit and the maturation of the seeds. The age (in days after anthesis) and changes in color, mass, size and flavor that occur during the development, are indicative parameters of the physiological maturity of both fruit and seeds, which occur at 75 DAA (55 DAT) and at 60 DAA (105 DAT). In addition, fruits produced in Piracicaba, São Paulo, has a commercial pattern and quality similar to the fruits produced in other regions. The fungal genus found in seeds of Physalis peruviana L. are Alternaria, Aspergillus, Bipolaris, Cladosporium, Epicoccum, Fusarium, Nigrospora and Penicillium, the lowest incidence occurring in seeds of 75 DAA. The presence of fungi does not affect the physiological component of the seeds.

A study on integration CMMI and agile development.

Ress, Ana Paula Pereira de Moraes 10 December 2013 (has links)
It\'s possible to notice in the daily work of companies that pressure by decreasing the delivery of software is still a reality. It is in this context that companies adopt the techniques of agile software development, implementing and establishing constant deliveries and short iterative cycles in the process of software development. But if on the one hand these techniques aim to innovate and reduce development time, on the other, companies feel pressured to adopt the traditional way of maintaining the quality of software. At this point, the CMMI is presented as maturity model worldwide recognition, classified in the traditional approach for preaching extensive formalism and focus on the process, as the agile approach puts individuals and their interactions is more important than processes and tools, where being adaptable changes is more important than following the strict what was planned. By integrating these two models of different approaches, it is expected that agile practices can help organizations mature to become more flexible. In order to investigate this integration is that this study uses the research method of case study so as to deepen the companies that have decided to adopt CMMI and agile development model. The goal is to raise as these companies solved the trouble spots of the traditional approach and agile in order to become more effective. The study also contain a framework for integrating CMMI vs. Agile development in order to list the points that deserve more attention and effort to adapt in order to achieve integration.
