Modelling Hydrological and Hydrodynamic Processes in Lake Tana Basin, EthiopiaSetegn, Shimelis Gebriye January 2010 (has links)
Lake Tana Basin is of significant importance to Ethiopia concerning water resources aspects and the ecological balance of the area. The growing high demands in utilizing the high potentials of water resource of the Lake to its maximal limit, pictures a disturbing future for the Lake. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of topography, soil, land use and climatic varia-bility on the hydrological and hydrodynamic processes of the Lake Tana Basin. The physically based SWAT model was successfully calibrated and validated for flow and sediment yield. Se-quential uncertainty fitting (SUFI-2), parameter solution (ParaSol) and generalized likelihood un-certainty estimation (GLUE) calibration and uncertainty analysis methods were compared and used for the set-up of the SWAT model. There is a good agreement between the measured and simulated flows and sediment yields. SWAT and GIS based decision support system that uses multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) was used to identify the most vulnerable areas to soil erosion in the basin. The results indicated that 12 to 30.5% of the watershed is high erosion potential. Pro-jected changes in precipitation and temperature in the basin for two seasons were analyzed using outputs from fifteen global climate models (GCMs). A historical-modification procedure was used to downscale large scale outputs from GCM models to watershed-scale climate data. The results showed significant changes in streamflow and other hydrological parameters in the period between 2045-2100. SWAT was combined with a three dimensional hydrodynamic model, GEMSS to investigate the flow structure, stratification, the flushing time, lake water balance and finally the Lake‘s water level response to planned water removal. We have found an alarming and dramatic fall of the water levels in Lake Tana as response to the planned water withdrawal. The combination of the two models can be used as a decision support tools to better understand and manage land and water resources in watersheds and waterbodies. The study showed that the Lake Tana Basin may experience a negative change in water balance in the forthcoming decades due to climate change as well as over abstraction of water resources. / QC 20100720

Feature Extraction and Dimensionality Reduction in Pattern Recognition and Their Application in Speech RecognitionWang, Xuechuan, n/a January 2003 (has links)
Conventional pattern recognition systems have two components: feature analysis and pattern classification. Feature analysis is achieved in two steps: parameter extraction step and feature extraction step. In the parameter extraction step, information relevant for pattern classification is extracted from the input data in the form of parameter vector. In the feature extraction step, the parameter vector is transformed to a feature vector. Feature extraction can be conducted independently or jointly with either parameter extraction or classification. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are the two popular independent feature extraction algorithms. Both of them extract features by projecting the parameter vectors into a new feature space through a linear transformation matrix. But they optimize the transformation matrix with different intentions. PCA optimizes the transformation matrix by finding the largest variations in the original feature space. LDA pursues the largest ratio of between-class variation and within-class variation when projecting the original feature space to a subspace. The drawback of independent feature extraction algorithms is that their optimization criteria are different from the classifiers minimum classification error criterion, which may cause inconsistency between feature extraction and the classification stages of a pattern recognizer and consequently, degrade the performance of classifiers. A direct way to overcome this problem is to conduct feature extraction and classification jointly with a consistent criterion. Minimum classification Error (MCE) training algorithm provides such an integrated framework. MCE algorithm was first proposed for optimizing classifiers. It is a type of discriminative learning algorithm but achieves minimum classification error directly. The flexibility of the framework of MCE algorithm makes it convenient to conduct feature extraction and classification jointly. Conventional feature extraction and pattern classification algorithms, LDA, PCA, MCE training algorithm, minimum distance classifier, likelihood classifier and Bayesian classifier, are linear algorithms. The advantage of linear algorithms is their simplicity and ability to reduce feature dimensionalities. However, they have the limitation that the decision boundaries generated are linear and have little computational flexibility. SVM is a recently developed integrated pattern classification algorithm with non-linear formulation. It is based on the idea that the classification that a.ords dot-products can be computed efficiently in higher dimensional feature spaces. The classes which are not linearly separable in the original parametric space can be linearly separated in the higher dimensional feature space. Because of this, SVM has the advantage that it can handle the classes with complex nonlinear decision boundaries. However, SVM is a highly integrated and closed pattern classification system. It is very difficult to adopt feature extraction into SVMs framework. Thus SVM is unable to conduct feature extraction tasks. This thesis investigates LDA and PCA for feature extraction and dimensionality reduction and proposes the application of MCE training algorithms for joint feature extraction and classification tasks. A generalized MCE (GMCE) training algorithm is proposed to mend the shortcomings of the MCE training algorithms in joint feature and classification tasks. SVM, as a non-linear pattern classification system is also investigated in this thesis. A reduced-dimensional SVM (RDSVM) is proposed to enable SVM to conduct feature extraction and classification jointly. All of the investigated and proposed algorithms are tested and compared firstly on a number of small databases, such as Deterding Vowels Database, Fishers IRIS database and Germans GLASS database. Then they are tested in a large-scale speech recognition experiment based on TIMIT database.

Hydrological and sediment Yield modelling in Lake Tana Basin, Blue Nile EthiopiaSetegn, Shimelis Gebriye January 2008 (has links)
<p>Land and water resources degradation are the major problems on the Ethiopian highlands. Poor land use practices and improper management systems have played a significant role in causing high soil erosion rates, sediment transport and loss of agricultural nutrients. So far limited meas-ures have been taken to combat the problems. In this study a physically based watershed model, SWAT2005 was applied to the Northern Highlands of Ethiopia for modelling of the hydrology and sediment yield. The main objective of this study was to test the performance and feasibility of SWAT2005 model to examine the influence of topography, land use, soil and climatic condi-tion on streamflows, soil erosion and sediment yield. The model was calibrated and validated on four tributaries of Lake Tana as well as Anjeni watershed using SUFI-2, GLUE and ParaSol algo-rithms. SWAT and GIS based decision support system (MCE analysis) were also used to identify the most erosion prone areas in the Lake Tana Basin. Streamflows are more sensitive to the hy-drological response unites definition thresholds than subbasin discretization. Prediction of sedi-ment yield is highly sensitive to subbasin size and slope discretization. Baseflow is an important component of the total discharge within the study area that contributes more than the surface runoff. There is a good agreement between the measured and simulated flows and sediment yields with higher values of coefficients of determination and Nash Sutcliffe efficiency. The an-nual average measured sediment yield in Anjeni watershed was 24.6 tonnes/ha. The annual aver-age simulated sediment yield was 27.8 and 29.5 tonnes/ha for calibration and validation periods, respectively. The SWAT model indicated that 18.5 % of the Lake Tana Basin is erosion potential areas. Whereas the MCE result indicated that 25.5 % of the basin are erosion potential areas. The calibrated model can be used for further analysis of the effect of climate and land use change as well as other different management scenarios on streamflows and soil erosion. The result of the study could help different stakeholders to plan and implement appropriate soil and water conser-vation strategies.</p>

Ever since the discovery of the giant magnetocaloric effect (GMCE) in the Gd5(Si,Ge)4 phases, magnetic cooling has gained significant interest because of its potential environmental benefits and increased efficiency compared to vapour-based refrigeration. This current work is focused on one of the most promising GMCE systems, the (Mn,Fe)2(Si,P) materials. An alternative synthetic route has been explored for the Mn2-xFexSi0.5P0.5 and MnFeSiyP1-y series which is capable of producing phase-pure samples. The new preparation technique eliminates common impurities that arise from established methods thus providing a more accurate description of the structural and physical properties. The low cost, non-toxicity, abundance of starting materials and easy tuning of the magnetic properties make these materials desirable for potential applications.
Phase-pure magnetocaloric Mn2-xFexSi0.5P0.5 materials (x = 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9) were synthesized through arc-melting followed by high temperature sintering. Structural features of samples with x = 0.6, 0.9 were studied through temperature dependent synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction. Magnetic measurements established the Curie temperature, thermal hysteresis, and magnetic entropy change of this system. According to the diffraction and magnetization data, all of the samples were shown to have a first-order magnetostructural transition which becomes less pronounced for Mn-richer samples.
The MnFeSixP1-x phases (x = 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.48, 0.52, 0.54, 0.56) have also been synthesized by the same method. For the first time, single crystals of x = 0.30, 0.40 were successfully grown. Variable temperature x-ray diffraction experiments for x = 0.30 were completed which show the structural changes across the phase transition. This structural data was complemented with magnetization data providing Curie temperatures and thermal hysteresis. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

La thèse a parcouru les étapes de l’affirmation progressive d’une véritable politique infrastructurelle européenne cohérente, en examinant trois volets : juridique, institutionnel et financier. Tout d’abord, la thèse a souligné le processus d’autonomisation horizontale (rapport de complémentarité et spécialité vis-à-vis d’autres politiques de l’UE) et verticale («communautarisation ») de la politique de réseaux transeuropéens. En deuxième lieu, l’analyse a mis en évidence le rôle des différents processus d’institutionnalisation et « d’intégration organique » des régulateurs nationaux entrepris par le législateur européen dans la centralisation et la communautarisation de la politique des réseaux. Enfin, la thèse a relevé l’affirmation du caractère central de l’aide financière de l’UE à la création de réseaux, accompagnée par une dérogation partielle des limites imposées par le droit européen aux politiques budgétaires expansionnistes des États membres. / The thesis highlights the development of a coherent and instrumental european infrastructure policy. First, the thesis shows the process of vertical (communitarization) and horizontal (complementarity and specialty vis-à-vis other EU policies) autonomisation of Trans-European Networks (TENs) policy. Secondly, the thesis points out the role played by the processes of « networkation » and « agencification » of national regulators in promoting interconnection and access to networks. Finally, the thesis emphasises the growing relevance of EU financial support to the establishment of TENs, and a competing tendency towards the reconciliation of national expansionary fiscal policy with EU law constraints. The thesis concludes by noting that Member States will continue to play a decisive role in TENs policy, not only by improving the actual degree of its implementation, but also allowing, in a forthcoming Treaty revision, to overcome the TENs intergovernmental legacy. / Le reti transeuropee sono uno dei vettori della competitività, dell’integrazione e dello sviluppo sostenibile dell’Unione. La tesi mette in luce la progressiva affermazione di una coerente politica infrastrutturale europea a carattere strumentale, esaminando tale evoluzione sotto tre profili: normativo, istituzionale e finanziario. In primo luogo, sotto il profilo normativo, la tesi evidenzia, da un lato, la progressiva emancipazione delle istituzioni dell’Unione dall’influenza degli Stati membri nell’esercizio delle proprie competenze in materia di reti transeuropee e, dall’altro, lo sviluppo di relazioni di complementarietà e specialità tra la politica di reti e altre politiche dell’Unione (capitoli 1 e 2). L’elaborato sottolinea, in secondo luogo, sotto il profilo istituzionale, il ruolo del processo di «integrazione organica» dei regolatori nazionali e del processo di «agenzificazione» nel perseguimento degli obiettivi di interconnessione e accesso alle reti nazionali. Le travail réalisé dans le cadre de cette thèse s'intègre dans le domaine de la télédétection de l'environnement maritime. Il porte, d'une part sur l'étude de l'interaction d'une onde électromagnétique avec une surface maritime en présence d'une cible complexe et observée en configuration bistatique. D'autre part, le travail est complété par l'étude et l'analyse de l'influence sur cette interaction des différents paramètres à la fois liés à la cible et à l'environnement. Dans ce contexte d'étude, le présent travail s'articule autour de deux volets importants. Le premier vise l'étude et la simulation de la Surface Equivalente Radar (SER) d'une cible complexe placée dans un environnement marin. Et un deuxième volet applicatif qui traite l'imagerie radar ISAR d'une cible complexe. Afin de traiter le premier point, le modèle électromagnétique retenu est basé sur une combinaison de méthodes asymptotiques (Optique Physique (OP), Optique Géométrique (OG), Méthode des courants équivalents (MCE)) intégrant les phénomènes d'ombrage et les multitrajets. Afin d'introduire l'influence de la surface de mer sur la réponse électromagnétique de la cible dans son environnement, nous avons opté pour une représentation de la scène (cible+surface de mer) par un ensemble de facettes triangulaires. Dans ce cadre, la cible discrétisée par un maillage triangulaire est générée à l'aide d'un outil de CAO (CATIA V5), quant à la surface de la mer, elle est générée en utilisant le spectre de mer d'Elfouhaily (et le modèle de Debye pour la prise en compte des paramètres diélectriques de l'eau de mer). Enfin, afin d'appliquer la méthode développée dans le cadre de l'imagerie radar ISAR, le calcul de la SER de la cible navale a été effectué en considérant une nouvelle représentation de la cible en parallélépipèdes. La méthodologie proposée a été évaluée via des simulations ainsi que des expérimentations (dans la chambre anéchoïque de l'ENSTA Bretagne) sur un modèle générique d'un navire.

This thesis deals with the design of a three-wheeled omni-directional robot control. The model of control is designed for robot´s omni-directional platform driven by maxon motor with the intelligent positioning controller EPOS. The design of control contains: - installation of the coordinated systems and transformation from one of them into another - design of system´s kinematical model - creation of classes for control and communication with EPOS - creation of the simulative program - planning of the mobile robot´s path - verification that the system is working The solution was based on continuous accelerated motion and the maximal acceleration of wheels was concerned, so that the slip would be suppressed. The function of the model was partly verified.
