Efficient Analysis Of Large Array Antennas A Thesis Submitted To The Graduate School Of Natural And Applied Sciences Of Middle East Technical University By Fatih Ovali In Partial Fulfillment Of The Requirements F

Ovali, Fatih 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Large phased array antennas are widely used in many military and commercial applications. The analysis of large arrays containing many antenna or frequency-selective (FSS) surface elements is inefficient or intractable when brute force numerical methods are used. For the efficient analysis of such structures hybrid methods (analytic and numerical, numerical and numerical) can be used. In this thesis, a hybrid method combining the uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD) and the moment method (MoM) used for the analysis of large, finite arrays is modified for the efficient yet accurate analysis of large printed dipole arrays. In the present hybrid UTD-MoM approach, the number of unknowns to be solved is drastically reduced as compared to the conventional MoM approach, which provides a great efficiency on the computational cost. This extreme reduction in the number of MoM unknowns is carried out by introducing a few UTD-ray type global basis functions for the unknown array element currents. In this study, this hybrid UTD-MoM method is applied to the analysis of a finite, planar periodic array of printed dipoles on a grounded dielectric substrate. The efficiency and accuracy of this hybrid method are demonstrated with some numerical results.

"I'm Sixteen and I'm Pregnant": A Rhetorical Analysis of Teen Mom Viewer Influences and Pleasures

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Research literature and popular press articles were reviewed to uncover the influences and viewer pleasures received from watching reality television. A close semiotic analysis of the reality television program, Teen Mom, was conducted. The semiotic analysis looked at the characters, the structure of the show, and the show's use of graphics and audio to understand the show's influences on viewers. An analysis of the Teen Mom website and online forum was also conducted. Seventy-one viewer posts and 403 viewer responses were analyzed to uncover viewer reactions to the show. The results were significant in three ways. First, the producers of the show claim the show is meant to educate viewers on the effects of teen pregnancy. The analysis found that while the show sends educational messages, it also contradicts itself by glamorizing teen pregnancy. Second, the analysis of the online forum revealed the formation of close online communities among Teen Mom viewers. Third, the website analysis provided evidence of viewer pleasure resulting from voyeuristic and social comparison tendencies. It is plausible that Teen Mom viewers engage with the show for the opportunity to observe parts of other people's lives they would not normally be permitted to see. At the same time, viewers evaluate themselves in comparison to the Teen Mom cast members. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Communication Studies 2012

Using Social Media to Address Preventable Crises: Focus Groups with Moms

Nakai, Maiko, Nakai, Maiko January 2012 (has links)
This study examines how an organization can use social media to solve preventable crises. Focus groups with a total of 14 moms are conducted to discuss a controversial Motrin babywearing advertisement and how Johnson & Johnson should have responded to the social media backlash. The results are explored based on dialogic public relations theory and its five components. Additional insights regarding the use of different social media channels and culture jamming YouTube videos suggest theoretical and practical implications on organizational responses on social media during preventable crises. The study also explores how people with high- and low-context cultures might respond differently to offensive advertising.

Numerická analýza účinků elektromagnetického pole na semikompozitní letoun EV55 / Numerical EM analysis of semi-composite model of EV55 aircraft

Krutílek, David January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with problems of electromagnetic fields' simulations in the aerospace industry. Electromagnetic effects of the external environment that maybe met during a standard flight (high-intensity radiated fields and lightning strike) are described hereinafter with a reference to their simulations on a digital mockup. A brief summary of the nowadays methods and solvers in computational electromagnetics to be practically used for the modeling and simulations in this field is elaborated as a base for the following parts of the diploma task. The next goal was to create a convenient model simulation of the researched object semi-composite aircraft EV55, on which chosen computing methods will be compared with the results of the real measuring.

Mormon Mommy Blogs: “There’s gotta be some women out there who feel the same way.”

King, Whitney L. 01 May 2011 (has links)
Communities in cyberspace have been present since the earliest days of home computers, when connecting to the web meant logging in to the WELL program. In 1994, when the Internet became more accessible to the public, and home computers were no longer considered a novelty, millions flocked to this new, virtual frontier that allowed them to connect with anyone around the globe. Folkloristics has been largely concerned with the tangible—what we can touch, hear, taste, and see. As the frontier of the web expanded, many folklorists contracted away from using it as a means to explore a new branch of folklore: virtual communities and all of the folkloric nuances that they possess. Fortunately, in recent years, folklorists have recognized the value and validity of the Internet folklore. This thesis is concerned with a very specific folk group, Mormon mommy bloggers, and how they function both in the blogosphere at large and the smaller niche of Mormon blogs, the bloggernacle. Mormon mommy blogs are distinctive in their vernacular, post material, and side bar badges. These blogs also provide a window not just into Mormon life, but also ideas about how faith can interact with identity and womanhood. Mormon mommy blogs are a vibrant genre of both Internet folklore and Mormon folklore. Mormon mommy blogs also serve as ways to undertake record-keeping for posterity and, for some, are a means of proselytizing, which are two important aspects of Mormon culture. Mormon mommy blogs also allow for frank conversations about expectations of the Mormon culture and the impossibilities of being the perfect Mormon woman. For non-Mormons, Mormon mommy blogs are a form of escapism into the lives of women who are confounding the notion that housewives and mothers are woefully unfulfilled. The fields of folkloristics, women and gender studies, and even religious studies could all benefit from examining mommy and Mormon mommy blogs. (102 pages)

Mom Power: Fostering New Growth in Appalachian Tennessee

Otwell-Dove, R., Clingensmith, R. M., Jones, V., Morelen, Diana 21 November 2019 (has links)
Mom Power (MP) is a trauma-informed parenting intervention which aims to break the cycle of intergenerational risk transmission by promoting enhanced parent-child attachment, increased social support, connection to community services, and utilization of self-care skills. MP was developed to engage vulnerable families (e.g., mothers with trauma histories, low income, single mothers) and seeks to mitigate common treatment accessibility barriers for underserved populations through provision of childcare, transportation, and a trauma-informed/culturally sensitive milieu. Results from a community-based randomized control trial (RCT) in Michigan (MI) have shown that MP is effective at reducing maternal psychopathology, lowering parenting stress, decreasing parental hopelessness, and promoting reflective parenting; however, no studies have examined the feasibility of implementing MP outside of MI, nor the effectiveness of MP with additional samples (Rosenblum et al., 2017). The present study is a hybrid implementation/effectiveness design that is two-fold: (1) Implementation design to assess the feasibility of training rural, Appalachian community-based providers in the MP model, recruiting high risk mothers, retaining mothers in this 10-week intervention, and implementing MP groups with community-based partners (2) An effectiveness oriented, pre-post, within subjects design with mothers of young children who are attending MP groups in the community [n = 33 mothers; M maternal age = 26 (SD = 5) years; M child age = 12 months (SD = 15)]. Regarding implementation results, the MP training involved n = 31 community-based providers from 5 agencies (e.g., community mental health, foster care agency) and 3 university-based mental health training programs. In the 18 months since training, three 10-week MP groups have been completed (n = 25 mother-child dyads), and one group is currently being held (n = 8 dyads). Regarding recruitment, we have had great success reaching high risk families, having more family referrals than available group slots. Of the families served in TN thus far, 60% had DCS involvement, 46% were in substance abuse treatment, 68% endorsed ≤ 4 ACEs, 77% had clinically significant depression, 58% had clinically significant anxiety, 78% were single/had no co-parent, 81% had low educational attainment, and 100% were below the federal poverty level. Regarding effectiveness, following completion of the current group, we will present pre-/post- differences in maternal PTSD symptoms, emotion regulation, and parenting behavior, as well as examine the relationship between attendance and change scores.
