The artist will be present: performing partial objects and subjects

'The Artist Will Be Present' explores objects as traces that stem from performed actions, and my body in performance. Part-sculptural objects, video and sound act as performance documents that expand on notions of the ‘live’ encounter. Interest lies in how we get to objects: process in variance to product or closure. And the question of how the body/s of the audience becomes participatory is at the forefront of these operations. From this viewpoint the exegesis aims to broaden existing scholarship on performativity, liveness and the part-sculptural object, exploring the manners in which various cultural practices act to animate objects. I reconsider the Euro-American genealogies of performance/body art (Bruce Nauman, Lygia Clark, Ann Hamilton et al.) in relationship to contemporary art practices in Australia and New Zealand (Alicia Frankvich, Carolyn Eskdale et al.) through the lens of late 19th-and early 20th-century writing on sympathetic magical action. A legacy of cultural anthropology dealing with magic (that was privileged in establishing grounding aspects of structural linguistics) circulates around the British anthropologist Stanley J. Tambiah whose thinking on persuasive analogy in ritual performance draws a crucial link between J. L. Austin’s performative utterance and James George Frazer’s notion of sympathetic magic. From such a perspective the operations of sympathetic mimesis—involving ambivalent similitude and contagion—are discussed in terms of performative and persuasive illocutionary force. This offers another model for articulating an authentic performative document as an encounter with the ‘live.’ A phenomenological method of enquiry, including Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s concept of the chiasm,—along with notions of mimetic incongruence—crucially tease out relationships between the live and the performance document and aim at resisting subject/object dichotomies whereby concepts of embodiment and indeterminate play between artist, objects and audiences are activated. Applied to contemporary debates on performance and ‘objects out of action,’ part objects and images are transformed as partial ‘subjects’: metonymically part of larger wholes as trace (substitution) and contagious contact (liveness). What is lacking in the operations of sympathetic mimesis is precisely what ‘draws out’ the body/s of the audience as they desire closure in object and duration. As these questions turn on the body of the artist/self and the audience/participant in performative installation practice, I offer an analysis of bodies in ritual exchange (donor/donee); subjects and objects as transformers: relations of force over form—liminal, reversible and redolent of lack—that emphasise encounter in difference to recognition. This is to speak of, in the words of Lygia Clark: “Tactile shocks to liberate the body.”

Beefing Up the Beefcake: Male Objectification, Boy Bands, and the Socialized Female Gaze

In the traditionally patriarchal Hollywood industry, the heterosexual man’s “male gaze,” as coined by feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey, is the dominant viewing model for cinematic audiences, leaving little room for a negotiated reading of how visual images are created, presented, and internalized by male and female audiences alike. However, as Hollywood’s shifting feminist landscape becomes increasingly prevalent in the mainstream media, content incorporating the oppositional “female gaze” have become the new norm in both the film and television mediums. Through an extended analysis of the gaze as socialized through gendered learning in children, the “safe space” afforded through the formulaic platform of “boy bands,” and the function of romantic comedies and the emerging feminist rhetoric prevalent in such films as “Magic Mike: XXL,” the conceptual “female gaze” is defined and explored through the demographic of young girls as they grow and push their understanding of desire, particularly as they develop into the mature, media-cosuming women that have become increasingly vocal in the Hollywood sphere.

Tendo em vista a importância desta representação nas obras carterianas, este trabalho pretende elucidar como se realiza a construção das personagens femininas e da ambientação (uma vez que esta também vai contribuir para a representação dessas personagens) da obra referida. As informações colhidas têm o intuito de esclarecer aspectos como, por exemplo, o estilo da autora, frequentemente associado à literatura fantástica e ao pósmodernismo, dialoga com a ideologia presente na obra, a saber, a crítica ao modelo patriarcal de sociedade, o qual muitas vezes impunha estereótipos e certos papéis sociais às mulheres. Assim, ao mesmo tempo em que sua obra se aproxima do caráter fantástico, Angela Carter não dissocia sua escrita do tecido social, criando, assim, um estilo de escrita único. Verifica-se, dessa forma, que assim como suas personagens, a autora, através da subversão, busca seu próprio espaço na Literatura / Abstract: This dissertation intends to conduct an analysis of the female representation in Angela Carter's novel The Magic Toyshop (1967), observing its relation with the elements present in the book. Considering the importance of this representation in the writer's works, this dissertation aims to elucidate how the construction of female characters and the setting (since it will also contribute to the representation of these characters) of the referred narrative is done. The information obtained have the intention of clarifying certain aspects, such as the the dialogue between the author's style, frequently associated with fantasy literature and post-modernism, and the ideology present in the novel: the critique of the patriarchal model of society, which often imposed stereotypes and social roles for women. Thus, at the same time that her work approaches the fantastic features, Angela Carter doesn't dissociate her writing of the social context, creating an unique style of writing. Henry Fuseli ou le spectacle de la peinture d’histoire (1768-1825) / The « insubstantial pageant » : Henry Fuseli and the spectacle of history painting (1768-1825)

L’enjeu de cette thèse sur Henry Fuseli est de tenter de montrer la façon dont cet artiste a conçu sa pratique de la peinture d’histoire comme un véritable spectacle. En nous appuyant notamment sur l’analyse du corpus d’œuvres shakespeariennes peintes, dessinées et gravées par l’artiste entre 1768 et 1825, nous avons essayé de mettre au jour les processus de « spectacularisation » à l’œuvre chez Fuseli. L’étude de la participation de l’artiste à la société anglaise et à ses divertissements - spectacles privés, fréquentation des théâtres publics et d’attractions plus populaires - a permis de mesurer en quoi une culture visuelle bien plus large que celle issue de la simple production théâtrale informe la production de l’artiste. Le spectacle populaire, véritable modèle caché du peintre, a nourri la réflexion de Fuseli sur la recherche de l’effet en peinture, dans sa relation avec la mémoire du spectateur. Contre l’idée commune faisant de Fuseli un peintre visionnaire, ancrant son œuvre dans sa seule imagination, cette thèse a pour ambition de montrer la nature du rapport éminemment matériel que l’artiste entretint avec les spectacles de son temps. La mise au jour du rôle des réminiscences de la scène de théâtre dans la création picturale et l’étude du transfert d’un certains nombre de « signes matériels » de la scène au tableau (tels que le cadre, les portes, le rideau…), nous ont permis de mettre en évidence l’esthétique en acte dans la peinture d’histoire de Fuseli. C’est la question de la relation que cette peinture instaure avec son spectateur qui clôt notre étude : une forme de pacte au sein duquel celui qui peint et celui qui regarde s’accordent, le temps du regard, pour croire à ce qui est donné à voir, afin d’en éprouver l’effet. / Trying to demonstrate how Henry Fuseli’s practice of history painting was truly conceived as a show is what is the challenge of this thesis. By basing ourselves mainly on the analysis of the corpus of Shakespearian paintings, drawings and engravings made by the artist between 1768 and 1825, we have tried to highlight the processes of spectacularisation (theatrical devices) within Fuseli’s work. The study of the artist’s involvement in the english society – his attendance to various entertainments such as privates shows, public theatres or even more popular scenes – enabled us to measure that the artist’s production is the result not only of the mere theater scene but accounts for a much broader visual culture. Hidden model for the painter, the popular scene nourished Fuseli’s thoughts in the search for painting effects and the induced relationship with the spectator’s memory. Despite the common belief of Fuseli being a visionary painter who’s work sets roots solely in his imagination, this thesis ambition is to show the very concrete and material links of the artist with the scenes of his time. Highlighting reminiscences of the theatre scene in the pictorial creation and the moving from the scene to the painting of a number of “material signs” (such as the frame, the doors, the curtain…) have enabled us to show the aesthetics performing within Fuseli’ history paintings. Our study ends with the relationship that these paintings generate with their spectator : a kind of pact in which for the time of a glance painter and spectator agree to believe in what is given to see so as to experi-ence its effects.

Spectrocopie gamma des noyaux 84, 86Se, 83As et 98Y / Gamma spectroscopy of nuclei : 84,86Se, 83As et 98Y

Le travail présenté dans ce manuscrit regroupe quatre études par spectroscopie gamma de quatre noyaux produits par une réaction de fission induite par protons de 25 MeV, sur une cible épaisse d'238U. Cette expérience a été menée au JYFL à Jyväskylä auprès du multidétecteur JUROGAM II. Dans ce manuscrit l'étude spectroscopique détaillée des noyaux : 84Se, 86Se, 83As et 98Y a été menée. Les trois premiers noyaux sont des noyaux sphériques se situant au voisinage de la couche magique N = 50. Leurs études peuvent permettre de mieux aborder l'évolution du gap de cette couche, mais aussi d'améliorer les interactions utilisées dans les calculs de modèle en couches permettant de reproduire leurs comportements. Huit nouvelles transitions ont pu être assignées à ces noyaux, ces résultats expérimentaux sont relativement bien en accord avec les calculs de modèle en couches effectués. Le noyau 98Y est un noyau possédant une coexistence de formes nucléaires. Alors que les états d'énergies inférieures à 500keV ont une configuration sphérique, les états situés au dessus sont déformés. Cinq nouvelles transitions ont été déterminées et ajoutées au schéma de niveaux existants, et deux calculs utilisant deux modèles collectifs ont été réalisés. Le premier utilisant le modèle GICM reproduit le comportement des états au dessous de 500keV et le deuxième QPRM reproduit les états prolate déformés permettant l'assignation d'un comportement sphérique à l'isomère (10-). / The work presented in this thesis includes four gamma-ray spectroscopy studies of four nuclei produced by fission induced by 25 MeV protons, on a thick target of 238U. This experiment was realized at JYFL in Jyväskylä with the multi-detector JUROGAM II. In this manuscript a detailed spectroscopic study of nuclei : 84Se, 86 Se, 83 As and 98Y was performed. The first three nuclei are spherical and they are on or adjacent to the N =50 shell closure. Their studies provide a better understanding of the possible decrease in energy of this shell closure, and also of the interactions used in shell-model calculations. Eight new transitions have been assigned to these nuclei and these experimental results are in a relatively good agreement with the shell-model calculations. In the nucleus 98Y a coexistence of nuclear shapes is observed. While the low-energy states below 500keV have a spherical configuration, higher lying states are deformed. Five new transitions were discovered and added to the existing levels scheme, and two calculations using two collective models have been made. The first set of calculations has used the GICM model to reproduce the behavior of states below 500keV and the second set of calculations has used QPRM to reproduce the prolate deformed states, and permitted the assignment of a spherical shape to the isomer (10-).

I denna studie som utgår från Huizingas begrepp ”den magiska cirkeln” undersöksapplikationen Tilt Brush för VR headsetet HTC Vive med avseende på dess bild ochljud samt hur detta tolkas och används under interaktionen med applikationens verktyg.Begreppet utgår ifrån att användaren kan låta sig uppslukas i ett spel så längeförväntningarna enligt spelets regler inte störs. Genom en fallstudie har applikationenstuderats med metoder som autoetnografi och multimodal analys utifrånsocialsemiotiska begrepp, samt öppna intervjuer med inslag av ”think-aloud”. Deliknande iakttagelser som framkommit med hjälp av olika metoder får anses styrkastudiens resultat. Resultaten i studien pekar på att det för interaktionens del är viktigt attvissa aspekter av ljudet, som har med positionering eller fysikens lagar att göra,stämmer överens med våra erfarenheter från verkligheten och att detta i sin tur stämmeröverens med det visuellt representerade. För bildens och ljudens meningserbjudanden iövrigt är användaren beredd att gå med på vilka oerhörda illusioner som helst så längebild och ljud kommuniceras i överensstämmelse och på ett trovärdigt sätt som lever upptill användarens förväntningar inom den magiska cirkeln, platsen för själva spelet.Förväntningarna behöver då inte ha med verkligheten att göra. Vad som uppfattas somhög modalitet styrs av vilken genre användaren förväntar sig att möta. Detta i sin turrelateras till användarens tidigare erfarenheter och sociala och kulturella bakgrund.

Les freins à l’achat d’occasion en ligne : le rôle des lois de la magie sympathique / Consumer reluctance to shop secondhand online : the role of the laws of sympathetic magic

L’achat d’occasion est un phénomène de consommation en plein essor. Alors que les motivations du consommateur à acheter d’occasion ont suscité de nombreuses recherches, les freins sont rarement étudiés, notamment dans le contexte de l’achat en ligne. Pourtant, une meilleure compréhension de ces freins présente des enjeux aussi bien économiques qu’environnementaux ou sociétaux. Dans ce travail, nous nous intéressons aux freins relatifs à la perception d’une contagion physique ou symbolique des produits d’occasion. En effet, ces freins – qui sont soulignés dans la littérature sur l’achat hors ligne – sont remis en question par le contexte spécifique de l’achat sur Internet. Nous mobilisons ainsi la théorie des lois de la magie sympathique pour étudier dans quelle mesure la loi de contagion et la loi de similitude peuvent influencer l’achat d’un produit d’occasion en ligne. Cette thèse repose sur un design expérimental comportant trois études empiriques. Les résultats obtenus permettent d’identifier des déterminants situationnels et individuels de la contagion physique ou symbolique des produits d’occasion vendus en ligne et d’étudier leur influence négative sur l’intention d’achat. Contrairement à l’achat hors ligne, nous montrons que la contagion physique repose alors sur un mécanisme cognitif. De plus, les résultats indiquent que la loi de similitude permet de limiter les effets de la contagion. En conclusion, cette recherche permet de proposer plusieurs solutions pour améliorer la vente des produits d’occasion en ligne. / Secondhand shopping is a growing phenomenon. While secondhand shopping motivations received a lot of attention in marketing literature, consumer reluctance to shop secondhand remains under-Researched, especially in an online context. Yet, the stakes in better understanding this reluctance are not only economic, but also environmental and societal. In this research, we focus on consumer reluctance that is related to the perception of a physical or symbolic contagion of secondhand products. Indeed, while this reluctance is highlighted in literature on secondhand shopping offline, its role is questioned in an online context. Hence, we use the theoretical framework of the laws of sympathetic magic to study to what extent the contagion or similarity laws influence the intention to shop secondhand online. We use an experimental design made of three empirical studies. Results enable us to identify several situational and individual antecedents of the physical or symbolic contagion associated to a secondhand product sold online, and to study how contagion negatively influences the intention to purchase. In opposite to offline shopping, we show that physical contagion relies on a cognitive mechanism. Moreover, results show that the similarity law can reduce the effects of contagion. To conclude with, this research suggests various solutions to improve the sales of secondhand products online.

"Until the crows came to collection their souls": re-vissioning the fantacy hero in selected fiction by Steven Erikson

In the course of this dissertation, I will interrogate traditional representations of the heroic figure within the fantasy genre. I will argue that the tropes established by some of the most renowned fantasy texts are undergoing a process of evolution and that Steven Erikson (who is the special focus of my discussion) seeks to revision the heroic mould through his construction of Coltaine of the Crow Clan in Deadhouse Gates (2001). Deadhouse Gates centres on Coltaine, who is tasked with escorting tens of thousands of refugees across four hundred leagues of hostile territory. This re-evaluation of fantasy modes has significant ramifications for the future development of the genre as a whole. In order to explore how Erikson interrogates heroic representation, I briefly establish some of the distinctive characteristics of fantasy. I then explore how some major fantasy texts represent heroism, before investigating Erikson’s particular response to these traditions. / English Studies / M. A. (English)

Analisar o sobrenatural em sua obra implica ainda examinar temas referentes à condição humana, que envolvem necessariamente a relação texto/contexto e também observar como isso é veiculado na narrativa em termos de representação. Tendo como pressuposto o relevante papel do escritor no seu contexto social e a importância da criação literária quando considerada a partir de certas necessidades de representação do mundo, nosso intuito com a pesquisa é problematizar a construção formal do insólito na ficção do autor, utilizando as acepções do neofantástico, realismo mágico e do absurdo, na direção de um diálogo entre os gêneros. Desta forma, a pesquisa tem por finalidade a análise da estruturação dos elementos insólitos como mecanismo de representação simbólica do homem moderno, em seis contos do autor, observando as especificidades do contexto histórico em que se situam as narrativas. A saber, os contos selecionados para a análise são: “O ex-mágico da Taberna Minhota”, “O pirotécnico Zacarias”, “Teleco, o coelhinho”, “Os dragões”, “O edifício” e “A cidade”. O embasamento teórico para o trabalho é composto de ensaios críticos sobre o autor como os de Arrigucci Jr, Jorge Schwartz, Nelly Novaes Coelho, José Paulo Paes, entre outros. Também fazem parte do embasamento, estudos sobre o fantástico, o neofantástico, o realismo mágico e o absurdo, como os de Tzvetan Todorov, Jean Paul Sartre, Jaime Alazraki, David Roas, William Spindler e Martin Esslin. Além disso, são utilizadas proposições teóricas sobre as categorias da narrativa como as de Gérard Genette / Murilo Rubião’s literature, pioneer of the uncommon in Brazil, contain essential themes for understanding the Brazilian modernity of the twentieth century. Analyzing the supernatural in his work also involves examining issues related to the human condition, which necessarily involve the relationship text / context and also observe how it is conveyed in the narrative in terms of representation. Assuming the relevant role of the writer in his social context and the importance of literary creation when seen from certain requirements of representing the world, our aim with the study is to discuss the construction of the formal neofantastic, magical realism and absurd in the author fiction, toward a dialogue between genres. Thus, the research main objective is to analyze the structure of the uncommon elements as mechanisms for symbolic representation of the modern man, in six tales of the author, observing the specificities of the modern context in which the narratives are situated. Namely, the stories selected for analysis are: “O ex-mágico da Taberna Minhota”, “O pirotécnico Zacarias”, “Teleco, o coelhinho”, “Os dragões”, “O edifício” e “A cidade”.
