La psychologie de la prestidigitation : approches historique, théorique et expérimentale / Psychology of prestidigitation : historical, theoretical and experimental approaches

Thomas, Cyril 15 September 2016 (has links)
Magicians often trick spectators’ mind by manipulating some of their cognitive limitations. Thus, magic offers an original basis for studying cognitive processes, such as perception, attention, reasoning, etc. In this vein, the present thesis proposes some research that scientifically explores the psychological mechanisms at stake in magic tricks. In the first part of the manuscript, we discuss the interests of an “experimental science of magic” by reviewing the main research from the last century to the present and by presenting some yet unexplored promising areas. In the second part, we focus our research on a robust illusion in which participants ‘‘perceive’’ an imaginary ball disappearing into the air: the Vanishing Ball Illusion (VBI). In a first experimental study, we explore the role of the magician’s gaze in illusion sensitivity. In a second study, we test the hypothesis that VBI could be based on a Representational Momentum effect, the latter referring to the tendency of observers to perceive the stopping point of a moving scene as being located farther ahead in the direction of motion than it really is. In the third part of our manuscript, we explore the psychological mechanisms at stake in another tool often used by magicians and poorly known to psychologists: the use of a “false solution”. Finally, we discuss the overall results and we propose promising research perspectives in the “science of magic”.

Geographical projections : lantern-slides and the making of geographical knowledge at the Royal Geographical Society c.1885-1924

Hayes, Emily Jane Eleanor Rhydderch January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is about the mobilities of geographical knowledge in the material form of lantern-slides and the forces exerted on these by technological and human factors. Owing to its concern with matter, human- and non-human, and its circulation, the thesis addresses the physics of geographical knowledge. The chapters below investigate the Royal Geographical Society’s (RGS) ongoing tradition of telling stories of science and exploration through words, objects and pictures in the final quarter of the nineteenth century and as geography professionalized and geographical science developed. These processes occurred within the context of a plethora of technological innovations, including the combination of the older medium of the magic lantern and photographic lantern-slides, integral to a wide range of entertainment, scientific and educational performances across Britain. In 1886 the RGS began to engage with the magic lantern. Via this technology and the interactive lecture performances in which it featured, I argue that the Society embraced the medium of photography, thereby engendering transformations in methods of knowledge making and to the RGS collections. I study how these transformations influenced the discipline of Geography as it was re-established at the University of Oxford in 1887. I demonstrate the evolution of the RGS’s Evening, Technical and Young Persons’ lectures, their contingent lantern-slide practices and, consequently, how these moulded, and were moulded by, the RGS Fellowship between c. 1885 and 1924. The chapters below explore how these innovations in visual technologies and practices arose, how they circulated knowledge and their effect on geographies of geographical knowledge making. By harnessing the lantern the RGS attracted an expanding and diversifying audience demographic. The thesis demonstrates the interactive nature of RGS lantern-slide lectures and audiences' important role in shaping the Society’s practices and geographical knowledge. The chapters below argue that it was via the use of the lantern that geography was disseminated to new places. The thesis therefore brings additional perspectives and dimensions to understandings of the circulation of geographical knowledge.

Pitchrörelsens kommunikativa roll : En studie om hur pitchrörelser i ljud kommunicerar funktionalitet med hjälp av magi i interaktiva media / Pitch movement and communication : A study of how pitch movement in sound effects communicate functionality using magic spells in an interactive media

Vingéus, Kevin January 2017 (has links)

Sociologia da religião : estudo comparativo entre Durkheim e Weber / Sociology of religion : comparative study between Durkheim and Weber

Fabien, Jean, 1982- 27 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Renato José Pinto Ortiz / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-27T08:03:38Z (GMT). This work, pursuing a very ambitious goal to compare Durkheim and Weber, try to reconcile the two theories of the sociology of religion as they represent the leading figures in the advent of modern Western societies. It seeks to highlight, starting from their epistemological and methodological studies, elements that show us what is convergent and divergent, while trying to exploit them to find an approximation. In order to develop this idea, in the first chapter there is a comparison between religion and magic, taking into account concepts such as sacrifice, worship and ritual. The objective of this comparison is, on one hand, to show that both in Durkheim are a social phenomenon, and, on the other hand, in Weber religion is more rational than the magic considered as an irrational activity. So, this chapter is a joint around the social and rational nature of religion in relation to social and irrational nature of magic. The second seeks to understand better, according to Durkheim and Weber's designs, the meaning of the relationship the individual has with the spiritual beings objects of worship, such as Soul, God and Spirit, as well as to determine the role played by the sacred in the socialization. Finally, the third chapter resumes the debate, in the same time old and current, on the complex relationship between religion and politics. By comparing, we will try to emphasize, first in Durkheim, their indiscriminate nature that incorporates and merges the concept of civil religion, then in Weber, their differentiation more or less radical which is rooted in its sociology of domination. In this sense, we will see through these two leading sociologists extent how religion and politics can influence each other and interact, even if they disagree. Thus, this comparative study discusses some common themes between Durkheim and Weber, which are essentially important for the sociology of religion / Mestrado / Sociologia / Mestre em Sociologia

Same same but different - : En diskursanalytisk studie rörande icke-renskötande samer uttryckt vid åren 1924 och 1945

Söderberg, Maria January 2020 (has links)
Abstract  In 1924 an investigation into the poor relief of the Saamis in Sweden was conducted. Thus, non-reindeer herding Saamis came into the lime-light for the first time. Previous research has focused on reindeer-herding Saamis in the sense that they were “the true Saamis”. Instead, the aim of this thesis, is to disclose how the non-reindeer herding Saamis were constructed by using a discourse analysis approach. It includes those called Parish Lapps, found in thirty replies to a questionnaire of the Nordic Museum in Sweden conducted in 1945. The bias presented there included the magic abilities of the Saamis. The findings illustrate that these notions, as well as the official discourse, influenced the communal discourse. Other bias exist in Swedish society today, and previous special rights of reindeer-herding is brought to the fore onto the political agenda, leaving the non-reindeer herding Saamis, and their history, on the margins. The non-reindeer herding Saamis were depicted as “the other”, not fully included in the “true Saami” way of living, always in exclusion to the Swedish residential manner.

Enchanted Pedagogy: Archetypal Forms, Magic, and the Transmission of Knowledge in Fantasy Literature

Razdow, Kari Adelaide January 2020 (has links)
This study examines pedagogical patterns associated with wizard, witch, and fairy archetypes in fantasy literature. The fact that magic exists in fantasy literature as a mysterious and elusive element allows narratives to maintain and validate various means of knowledge acquisition – one archetypal form, such as a wizard, pursues a radically different mode of pedagogical engagement with magic than another archetypal form, such as a fairy. According to Carl Jung, archetypes are anchored by ancient elements of mythological lore, yet continuously shape-shift in the present day. My qualitative research process involved close readings of selected passages in popular works of fantasy literature, selected for analysis based on their salient educational themes as well as a presence of witches, wizards, and fairies. I examine how archetypes in fantasy literature frame various approaches to education, investigating whether these pedagogical multiplicities tend to re-codify magic itself. I investigate how these archetypes acquire, dispel, manipulate, and embody magic with opposing or unique tactics, while considering how each archetype confronts the unknown. I also reflect on the relevant folkloric and mythic dimensions of each archetype, examining the extent in which the magical discourse surrounding each archetype relates to ideas about teaching and learning. Each archetype presents pedagogic nuances, subtle parallels, layers, and metaphorical veins of meaning. How does education in fantasy literature establish broad and vexing challenges to the realities that we are familiar with or conscious of in the everyday contemporary educational field? Are there idiosyncratic pedagogical possibilities (and impossibilities) through archetypal representations in fantasy literature, allowing for multifaceted and meaningful representations of teaching and learning? I find that each archetype’s distinct pedagogical model includes variations as well as overlapping representations of creative agency, amplified possibilities, enhanced notions of growth, radical receptivity, calls for empathy, and visions of transformation. After examining each archetype in consecutive chapters, my conclusion summarizes the prismatic meaning of their pedagogical engagements, while reflecting on the implications and cross-pollination of education and magic. The intersection of praxis and knowledge for each archetype induces a mythopoeic imagination in relation to education, as each reconciles and renews significant transformational elements of pedagogy.

Djinn & magi : Andeväsen och magiska ritualer inom islamisk tradition

Al Abdalla, Yazan January 2020 (has links)
Purpose: This study focuses on describing and explaining Djinn, Iblis and magic from an Islamic point of view. There are many stories that can be told but the author focuses on the parts of the stories that is known to the majority of Muslims. One of the many interesting aspects studied in the essay is how people in Babylon, in contrast to today's Muslims, view Islam's interpretation of magic and Djinn.  In order to present these perspectives and their change over time, a number of Muslims are interviewed of various religious backgrounds, liberal, conservative and orthodox. In addition, various studies are used that describe the social structure in Babylon where witchcraft according to Islam was first taught. The information from these works is intertwined with Carl Gustav Jung's and Marie-Louise von Franz's book Man and his Symbols (1964). These studies, together with the interview results, provide the opportunity to compile logical conclusions.  Method: The first two questions are about explaining what Djinn is based on the general Islamic interpretation and who Iblis are. In order to be able to present this information in the results section, the author starts from the qualitative method, intertextuality, which is about texts always being based on previous writings.  The second sub-result focuses on describing what Sihr (Magic) is from an Islamic perspective. It also describes how these rituals are performed. For this, a multimodal method is used to analyze the book Shams al-maarif al-Kubra.  The third sub-result focuses on an analysis of various interviews conducted to create an understanding of how Muslims view Djinn and Sihr. The answers to these are then related to the perception of this in ancient Babylon. A conversation analysis is performed to analyze the interviews.  Theory: In this study, the result is intertwined with the theory (Socialization). Social construction includes human reality. A society is created through interaction between individuals. This is called externalization. The natural character that is then added to a society takes place through objectification. Individuals who apply to the specific society may then accept and integrate with the independent character of society, which at this stage, has been normalized and assumed to be natural.  Result: The result of this study is threefold. According to Islam, Djinn are invisible spirits that God created from poisonous, smokeless fire. Iblis, also known as Lucifer or Satan, is part of the Djinn kin. According to the story, he refused to bow down to Adam, challenged God and thus plays an important role in man's cosmic destiny. According to Islam, magic is rituals performed to make contact with evil Djinn who in turn performs various services for the magician. The services are not provided free of charge. Magicians must perform certain rituals which, according to Islamic tradition, are extremely serious sins. The book Shams al-Maarif al-Kubra teaches readers how to perform certain rituals and draw magical symbols. The third result focuses on compiling data from the interviews conducted that are presented under appendices. Religion was of paramount importance to the Babylonians and formed a large part of their daily lives. In comparison with today's Muslims, it can be stated that they find it more difficult to live by the idea that there are constantly invisible beings and forces around them.

Identifikace parametrů matematického modelu pneumatik / Identification of tire model parameters

Olišar, Petr January 2020 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to obtain lateral parameters of the Magic Formula tire model of a tire commonly used in Formula Student competition. Both the author and the supervisor of the thesis know the tire name and its specification, but the research company that did the tire testing and provided me with the date prohibits sharing this of data publicly, so the tire designation is not mentioned in this thesis. The first chapter covers main theoretical facts related to a tire, briefly describes some of the tire models and shows possibilities how to determine tire characteristics that are used in a tire model. The thesis describes how to process raw tire data measured during a laboratory experiment using scripts created in Matlab software. The inputs variables are slip angle, lateral force, normal force and inclination angle. Raw data are splitted into parts, main coefficients of the Magic formula model (B, C, D, E, Sh, Sv) are calculated and subsequently the lateral parameters are obtained using least square method to fit parameters into the measured data. The works gives two main outcomes. The first output is a set of Matlab scripts that can be used to determine lateral parameters of any tire that has the same input data format as presented. A TIR file of the Formula Student tire in case of lateral slip is the second result of the work. This can be used for vehicle dynamics simulation of Formula Student racing car. The thesis also offers a comparison between parameters, which I calculated, and those gained thanks to Optimum Tire software by Calspan research company. Additionally the work shows the effect of load and inclination angle on lateral force.

Étude de la structure à basse énergie de ⁷⁹Zn par décroissance β et β-n de ⁷⁹Cu et ⁸⁰Cu / Study of the low energy structure of ⁷⁹Zn through β and β-n decay of ⁷⁹Cu and ⁸⁰Cu

Delattre, Marie-Coralie 05 October 2016 (has links)
In order to investigate the persistence of the N=50 gap for the Nickel isotopes, an experiment has been performed at RIBF (RIKEN, Japan) to produce exotic nuclei around ⁷⁸Ni by in-flight fission of a ²³⁸U beam. The BigRIPS and ZeroDegree spectrometers were used to purify and select the nuclei of interest. Their decay was detected with the EURICA detector for γ-ray detection, coupled with the charged particle WAS3aBi detector. The analysis of the correlations between the ion implantation and their decay, as well as the γ decay spectra in simple and double coincidence allowed us to propose a level scheme of the excited states for the ⁷⁹Zn, and we assigned the spin and parity for most of the states. We also constrained the spin value for the fundamental state of the ⁸⁰Cu, between 3hbar and 5hbar. Comparison with a core-particle coupling model allowed us to interpret the level scheme and propose hypothesis about the nature of the observed states. The single particle state energies extracted from the theoretical calculation indicate the persistence of the N=50 gap at Z=28.

Waß, Christopher January 2016 (has links)
