Strong interactions in alkaline-earth Rydberg ensembles

Mukherjee, Rick 20 October 2014 (has links)
Ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices provide a versatile and robust platform to study fundamental condensed-matter physics problems and have applications in quantum optics as well as quantum information processing. For many of these applications, Rydberg atoms (atoms excited to large principal quantum numbers) are ideal due to its long coherence times and strong interactions. However, one of the pre-requisite for such applications is identical confinement of ground state atoms with Rydberg atoms. This is challenging for conventionally used alkali atoms. In this thesis, I discuss the potential of using alkaline-earth Rydberg atoms for many-body physics by implementing simultaneous trapping for the relevant internal states. In particular, I consider a scheme for generating multi-particle entanglement and explore charge transport in a one dimensional atomic lattice.

Konflikt a prolínání kulturních znaků ve fikčním světě románů Louise Erdrich / Conflict and blending of cultural signs in fictional world of novels by Louise Erdrich

Pacolová, Jana January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to inspect the work of Louise Erdrich with the optics of semiotics, literary theory and cultural anthropology and to find topics related to the cultural conflict of Native American and Christian tradition. The theoretical part is devoted to the theories of the ontological definition of the fictional world, its relation to culture and its construction within a literary piece. In the practical part, we will deal with the cultural features associated with nature, religion, space and social ordering, as they are illustrated in the novels. The paper is not an anthropological material dealing with Native American culture as such. Here we perform a literary analysis and examine the anthropomorphic dimension of the unique fictional world.

Lidové léčení v pamětech i žité přítomnosti přesídlených krajanů z oblasti bývalého Sovětského svazu / The folk healing in memoirs and living presence of resettled compatriots from the former Soviet Union

Beranská, Veronika January 2017 (has links)
The work builds on the scientific production on the theme of the resettled Czechs from areas of the former Soviet Union, which is continued treated on the soil of the Institute of Ethnology of the CAS, v.v.i., and introduces the latest conducted grant project, in which I focused on the area of health and folk medicine. The text deals with a specific group of the Czech populations predominantly from Ukraine and Kazakhstan (partially also Belarus and Russia), whose ancestors set out in the second half of the 19th century to seek a better living in the direction to the east from the borders of then Austro-Hungary. Through the use of commemorative narrations and life trajectories of the participating actors, the work maps the background of the arrival in new destinations, life in the 20th century, the change of the political and social conditions and the subsequent remigration to the Czech Republic. With a few exceptions, all of the actors figuring in this work became part of the resettlement processes - in the case of the Volyn Czechs after World War II in 1947 within the controlled exchange of the populations and in the case of the Chernobyl Czechs (and partially also some of the Czechs from Belarus and Russia) in the 1990s within the state-controlled resettlement after the accident at the Chernobyl...

The Antinoopolis Medical Papyri: a Case Study in Late Antique Medicine

Corazza, Francesca 16 September 2019 (has links)
The main aim of my research project was to re-examine the Greek medical papyri from the Egyptian site of Antinoopolis dating between late 3rd up to 7th century AD, discovered mostly in a single area between 1913 and 1914. Antinoopolis offers the potential for putting documents into an archaeological context, and this geographical and chronological consistency facilitates a close comparison between the data preserved in these sources. The interest in Antinoopolis, as far as the medical tradition is concerned, lies in the diverse healing practices attested by documentary, literary and archaeological evidence whose quantity and range is altogether exceptional among Egyptian villages. The objective of my research is both papyrological-philological and cultural-historical. Firstly, I have tried to present the manuscripts and discuss their peculiarities, characteristics and functions. I have sought to improve our understanding of these fragments through the identification of new portions of text, the integration of supplements and a better assessment of their formal arrangement, which resulted in the revised edition of a few outstanding papyri. In addition to this, I have tried to contribute to the evaluation of the general context of this Egyptian community, particularly as regards religious healing practices connected to the sanctuary of Collouthus, and to explore the historical and cultural circumstances in which these texts were used. Finally, my research investigates the development of the codex throughout late Antiquity, which can be observed in a number of respects. One of the most significant concerns how the texts were assembled and presented, namely the interplay between container and content.

ESG scores´ effect on investment strategies : How does Dogs of Dow and The Magic Formula´s performance get effected when weighted according to their ESG score?

Johnsson, Oscar, Henriksson, Elias January 2022 (has links)
This thesis investigates the two investment strategies Dogs of Dow and The Magic Formula. We test how the strategies perform when getting weighted to ESG scores and also if they outperform OMXSPI during the years 2012-2022. What we find in our study is that when returns are risk adjusted, both Dogs of Dow and The Magic Formula and their ESG weighted portfolios outperform the benchmark during the period. We also conclude that ESG weighted portfolios yield lower returns than equally weighted Dogs of Dow and The Magic Formula portfolios. The portfolio that produce the highest return was the equally weighted Dogs of Dow portfolio. For the value at risk we find that on a five percent significant level, the portfolios observe values from -1,55% to -1,69%.

Blood and Magic : A microstudy of associations between Viking Age women and their weapons. / Blod och magi : En mikrostudie av associationer mellan vikingatida kvinnor och deras vapen

Halvardsson, Alicia January 2021 (has links)
This thesis discusses what associations Viking Age women and weapons had according to extant sources and how they can present in the grave material. In order to achieve this, literary sources, iconographic representations, and grave material are studied and compared in order to reach a deeper understanding of these associations and what they look like in the archaeology. The literary and iconographic source materials in this thesis are limited those from within, or shortly after, the Viking Age. The grave material in this thesis is also dated to the Viking Age and consists of weapon graves with osteologically determined inhumed females located in Gerdrup, Kaupang, Aunvoll, Nordre Kjølen, and Birka.

Modern Portfolio Theory Combined With Magic Formula : A study on how Modern Portfolio Theory can improve an established investment strategy.

Ljungberg, Axel, Högstedt, Anton January 2021 (has links)
This study examines whether modern portfolio theory can be used to improve the Magic Formula investment strategy. With the assets picked by the investment strategy we modify the portfolios by weighting the portfolios in accordance with modern portfolio theory. Through the process of creating efficient frontiers and weighting the portfolios differently we create two alternative portfolios each year. One portfolio that aimsfor maximum Sharpe ratio and one that aims for minimum variance. These weighted portfolios produce higher risk-adjusted returns consistently during the examined period of 2010-2020. We conclude that the Magic Formula can be improved by using modern portfolio theory.

Portfolio performance in Nordic countries : A quantitative comparison study of investment strategies in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden / Portföljprestationer i nordiska länder : En kvantitativ jämförelsestudie av investeringsstrategier i Danmark, Finland, Norge och Sverige

Brindelid, Ludwig, Nilsson, Tobias January 2021 (has links)
The interest in the stock market has increased in the last couple of years whereas those who invest use all kinds of different strategies, or none at all. Some strategies are quite complicated and time consuming, while others are easier to replicate. The Magic Formula and Piotroski’s F- Score are two of the more well-known investment strategies which have been developed during the 2000s and are relatively easy to follow. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of the two investment strategies and if they can create excess return in Denmark, Finland and Norway. In addition, the results will be compared to an earlier study made on the Swedish market, for the sake of discovering any differences between the Nordic countries when investing according to these strategies. The results displayed that both strategies outperformed the market indexes most years and that their accumulated returns were far greater than the market indexes between 2012-2021. Out of the Nordic countries, the portfolios in accordance with The Magic Formula and Piotroski’s F-Score both performed best in Norway. In all the three countries, Piotroski’s F-Score was the better-performing strategy over these nine years regarding accumulated return. However, the results only showed statistical differences between the strategies in Norway and Denmark. Regarding differences between the countries, including Sweden, the results indicate that there are only statistical differences in accumulated return between Norway and Sweden concerning The Magic Formula portfolios during 2012-2020. On the other hand, the results for the F-Score portfolios showed statistical differences in accumulated return between all countries except between Denmark and Finland.

Román "Vesmír": Základní aspekty románu M. A. Bulgakova Mistr a Markétka / The Novel "Universe": Basic Aspects of M.A. Bulgakov's Master and Margarita

Fléglová, Marie January 2014 (has links)
Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov was a Russian novelist and playwright active in the first half of the twentieth century. The work of this author is unforgettable for the modern Russian literary art of the fist half of the twentieth century. Known by writings with very strong plots and engaging storyline, he did not fear confrontation or conflicts within individual works. His dialogs are masterfully constructed and his feel for humorous vision of life and description of the world is regarded as unreachable. A fascinating and almost unbelievably inspiring Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita has become the model for this diploma thesis. Due to its multi-layering, broad topical range, two intersecting storylines and the content, the thesis has been named The Novel "Universe". It contains everything that makes life life: love, death, betrayal, courage and cowardice, generosity and envy… Bulgakov's success received thanks to this work is rooted in the masterful connection of the two parallel stories (ongoing in Moscow in 1930 and in Jerusalem at the beginning of our era), in fantasticality and in the view of the contemporary social situation, which are depicted in the novel, and lastly in the description of the human characters constancy. Due to these arguments, the thesis focuses on the following...
