”STARK INIFRÅN OCH UT” – forma, balansera och optimera : En analys av kroppsframställning i samtida hälsotidskrifter / STRONG FROM INSIDE AND OUT – Shape, Balance and Optimize : An Analysis of Body Appearance in Contemporary Health Magazines

Henriksson, Tilda January 2014 (has links)
Placed within the field of recent research concerning religion and contemporary religious landscapes, this thesis aims to show conceptions of human life and body displayed in ten Swedish health magazines. The analysis aims to demonstrate the appearance of body and bodily experience and in addition see in what way ”westernized” religious traditions and methods from east Asia may contribute to perspectives of health. The main theories for the study are objectified versus phenomenological understanding of the human body by Drew Leder (1992; 1990) and Kristen Zeiler (2010). The quote in the main title is from the empirical material (Hälsa & Fitness, 2014 (11), cover). ”Strong from inside and out” depicts the core of the outcome, indicating both biomedical and holistic perspectives. With science as a provable reference, the individual’s body seems to be an object to control and shape to optimize goals of esthetic or physical benefits. Here are many mental aspects involved as well as social factors, which shows that the human is a phenomenological creature. The thesis suggests that in order to accomplish health and a healthy relationship – not only towards the body but living through it – the human need to cultivate the sensation of wholeness. Having no clear counterpart, this aspect seems to be easily provided through eastern traditions and methods, treating the human as “one”.

From Lip Smackers to Wrinkle Cream: Priming the Next Generation of Consuming Women

Elliott, Rebecca 22 September 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to determine if there is a model of ideal femininity communicated through advertising in girls’ and women’s magazines. To assess the representations of women in magazine advertisements, a content analysis of advertisements appearing in three top-selling, demographically-defined women’s magazines (Girls’ Life, Seventeen, and Cosmopolitan) was conducted. Using feminist theory and hegemony theory as critical lenses, advertisements were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Each advertisement was assessed using five criteria: physical characteristics, social context, personality and attitude, and subtext. Using this data to establish the dominant representations of women, it was determined that there is a model of ideal femininity which is developed through establishing common ideals shared by all three magazines and by gradually introducing new ideals which correspond to shifts in real-world interests and experiences of women. It was concluded that a model of ideal femininity is developed through advertising in girls’ and women’s magazines, this model is used as a guide to direct girls and women towards specific ideal preferences, attitudes and behaviours, and this model continues to emphasise traditional cultural values and gender ideals which are not necessarily reflective of the range of roles women assume in today’s society.

Little histories : modernist and leftist women poets and magazine editors in Canada, 1926-56

Irvine, Dean J. (Dean Jay) January 2001 (has links)
This study incorporates archival and historical research on women poets and editors and their roles in the production of modernist and/or leftist little-magazine cultures in Canada. Where the first three chapters investigate women poets who were also magazine editors and/or members of magazine groups, the fourth chapter takes account of women magazine editors who were not themselves poets. Within this framework, the dissertation relates women's editorial work and poetry to a series of crises and transitions in Canada's leftist and modernist little-magazine cultures between 1926 and 1956. This historical pattern of crisis and transition pertains at once to the poetry of Dorothy Livesay, Anne Marriott, P. K. Page, and Miriam Waddington and to the little-magazine groups in which they and other women were active as editors and/or contributing members. Chapter 1 deals with Livesay's editorial activities and poetry in the context of two magazines of the cultural left, Masses and New Frontier, between 1932 and 1937. Chapter 2 concerns Livesay, Marriott, their involvement in poetry groups in Victoria and Vancouver, and their publications in Contemporary Verse and Canadian Poetry Magazine, between 1935 and 1956. Chapter 3 addresses the poetry of Page and Waddington published in Preview and First Statement from 1942 to 1945, their poetry appearing in Contemporary Verse from 1941 to 1952--53, and their editorial activities in and/or relationships to these Montreal and Victoria - Vancouver magazine groups between 1941 and 1956. Chapter 4 documents the histories of some often forgotten women who edited modernist or leftist little magazines in Canada between 1926 and 1956. These core chapters are prefaced and concluded by histories of the antecedents to and descendants of Canadian modernist and leftist magazine cultures.

Sari, Tugba 01 April 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among wellness, relationship status, gender, place of residence, and GPA among university prep-school students. The study was carried out on a sample of 506 prep-school students from BaSkent University. The students were asked to fill out Wellness Inventory and the demographic data sheet. In order to investigate the differences between wellness sub-scales&rsquo / scores (Relational Self, Social Interest and Empathy, Self Consistency, Mastery Orientation, Physical Wellness, Humor, Love, and Environmental Sensitivity) of the subjects with respect to gender, relationship status, place of residence, and GPA / four separate MANOVA&rsquo / s were conducted. The results of this study revealed significant gender differences in self-consistency, love, environmental sensitivity sub-scales&rsquo / scores in favor of male students, but in social interest and empathy sub-scales in favor of female students. The findings also showed that students who were in a committed relationship scored significantly higher in love sub-scale, whereas students who were not in a committed relationship scored significantly higher in physical wellness sub-scale. Results indicated no significant differences in terms of the place of residence. The results also revealed that students, whose GPA ranged between 90-100, scored significantly higher on mastery orientation sub-scale of Wellness Inventory than students, whose GPA level ranged between 50-70 and below 50.

The Actual And Desired Levels Of Shared Decision Making

Erten, Muge 01 February 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the study is to investigate the actual and desired levels of shared decision making in some private and secondary schools in Ankara, Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 253 teachers from 12 private primary and secondary schools in Ankara. Shared Education Decisions Survey-Revised by Prof.Dr.Donna Ferrara was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics were applied to analyze data. The results revealed that teachers are consulted in some but not all areas of school decisions. They always participate in the decisions about the general issues of their schools. Other areas which they are consulted in are curriculum/instruction, student achievement, pupil personnel, and parental involvement. Likewise, the decisions which they sometimes participate in are in the areas of policy, staff personnel, and staff development. However, it seems that teachers think they rarely or never participate in the decisions about school/community relations, budget, and plant management. According to the results of the survey, teachers always desire to be consulted in most of the decisions. It is understood that only for the curriculum/instruction area some of them stated that they sometimes would like to participate in the decisions.

LADY TALK : A critical discourse analysis of the representation of women over 50 in fashion and lifestyle magazines

Karlsson, Niquita January 2018 (has links)
The complex concept of the ageing woman must be viewed in relation to both what it means to be a woman and what it means to age. Both women and the elderly are discriminated against in different respects; therefore it could be argued that the ageing woman is discriminated against in a double sense. This study investigates how women over the age of 50 are portrayed linguistically in fashion and lifestyle magazines with the aim to reveal the underlying attitudes as well as social and cultural ideologies regarding the topic today. Based on Wodak (2001), I employed critical discourse analysis (CDA) methodology, with a particular focus on terms of address and attributes identified in selected fashion and lifestyle magazines. The findings revealed that although the women were addressed mainly in terms of their professional titles, the emphasis was put on them as ageing women by a continuous mentioning of their age, their past and physical consequences from the process of ageing.        Further, personality traits and emotional and physical attributes were evaluated in terms of negative and positive associations, revealing positive attitudes (e.g. happy, curious, experienced) regarding emotions and personality traits, but negative associations (e.g. weight gain, grey hair, old) in relation to their ageing bodies and their appearances.

Uma ecologia do jornalismo : o valor do verde no saber dizer das revistas da Abril

Schwaab, Reges Toni January 2011 (has links)
The credibility of giving accounts, attributed to Journalism, is claimed within the practices of the Field as an element that warrants a place of competence in face of contemporaneity central problems, such as the environmental issue. In magazine journalism, as an expert expression of the journalistic system, to explore thematic deployments of conflictual issues offering utilitarian words becomes productive from the editorial point of view. Institutional images and images of the magazine itself, operated within texts, intertwine market projects, special reports, Green Editions, Guides. The empirical base for this investigation is set in the reading of excerpts taken from feature stories and editorial texts from five of Editora Abril’s magazines, published in the years 2007 and 2008, and that under the label Movimento Planeta Sustentável (Sustainable Planet Movement) presented the environmental theme as a front-page headline. The apprehension is of a double emergence: of the theme in the magazine pages and of journalism in the theme. Publication wise, the willing to legitimate an intervallic mediation, with the effect of resolving ambivalences, is communicated. In the texts, the magazines activate a relation of places, their own, of readers, of other Social Fields, in such a way as to enunciate solutions. The study approaches an ecology of journalism based on concept-notions from Discourse Analysis and Journalism Theories, discussing the discursive inscription of Abril’s magazines concerning the green value to the constitution of a place of knowing to say, in tune with nowadays spirit.

Revistas, design editorial e retórica tipográfica : a experiência da revista Trip (1986-2010)

Fetter, Luiz Carlos January 2011 (has links)
The research aims to Trip magazine, a publication representative of the trend of segmentation of the magazines that came from the decade of 1980. The reporting period (1986-2010) comprises distinct phases corresponding to three graphic projects. The main objective is to analyze typographic proposals, checking the extent to which rhetorical strategies configure the editorial and commercial orientations materially, conforming magazine’s identity. We are interested in considering issues related to conventional and innovative notion of legibility, the tension between the verbal and visual present in typography. The methodology consisted of literature research established the theoretical foundations and the categories for qualitative and qualitative analysis, and was based on the authors as Lupton, Zappaterra, Meggs, Bringhurst, Gäde, Gruszynski and Ali, among others. The quantitative analysis gave up checking into variable specifications on a annual copy sections that are distinct situations requiring typographic strategies distinguished: long text, short text, and cover. This allowed verification second specified variables. From this sample, were extracted significant layouts for qualitative analysis, seeking to deepen the numerical indicators pointed. The study found that editorial design, on formulating editorial and commercial strategies by the configuration of the graphic elements on the support, shows his mediator character. The different possible articulations of rhetoric determine distinct patterns of legibility, seeking to adapt itself to the target public. Each project demand specific degree of balance between innovation and tradition, co-authoship and transparency. There is, in our object, the approach of a model where the commercial survival assumes relevancy It was observed that effective functional layouts from the past could be redeemed, but this does not mean that the achievements of the break with modernism have been discarded on the analysed magazine.
