In the context of the analysis about the relation between family dynamics and the increasing participation and retention of women in the labor market, this research aims to study the participation of women in union (married or in a consensual union) in household providing. More specifically, the research discusses which sociodemographic variables would be important for the profile of these women in union who are household providers and how the way women and men in union are inserted (or not) in the labor market. The time spent in paid employment and household chores is also an important point of this research, since it allows analyzing the total time men and women together spend and how it may or may not influence their participation in household providing. The data for the analysis of the professional and familiar career of the couple and the household organization are also important to the household providing analysis and were considered. To accomplish these goals, the research was conducted in two stages: quantitative, through the analysis of data from the PNAD from 2001 to 2009 for the State of São Paulo, and qualitative, based on interviews made with 42 women in union, of which nine were non-providers, 14 were complementary providers and 19 were primary providers. All these women were from the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, SP, Brazil. The main contribution of this research is to show that female participation in household providing in the State of São Paulo is something consolidated and had a steady increase during the decade. Another important point of this research was that men and women that are living together in a stable relationship are placed differently in the labor market and this is reflected in their participation in household providing. While the vast majority of these men are the main providers, most women are complementary providers. Moreover, the participation in household providing does not reduce women's workload and the female providers end up having a hard time articulating paid employment with domestic chores. However, the same is not true for men. Among women who are primary providers there is an aggravating point, even though being in the labor market is important for them to gain independence in the management of their money, the workload is still too large. For these women, taking the main part or the total of the household providing becomes a negative experience, since, in their perception, it frees men of assuming their familiar responsibilities in household providing and in their part of the housework / Doutorado / Demografia / Doutor em Demografia

January 2017 (has links)
Naquela pesquisa, concentrei-me no site canadense Ashley Madison. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The dissertation aims to expand my ethnography in digital media with men seeking sexual and affective encounters outside of marriage, using specialized websites that promise "secrecy" and "security", as well as "adventure" and "emotion". In that survey. I focused on the Canadian website Ashley Madison. It was a research that sough to think about contemporary conjugalities, but that led to discussions on sexuality and desires, to which were added the negotiations in the field of gender relations, in a scenario market by incitement to adventure and consumption of emotions, leading me to pay attention to the constitution of contemporary masculinities in the face of the demands. To this new key of entry, it was added the enlarged use of applications for smartphones as a resource of insertion in the competitive market of the affections. Therefore, I sough to undestand how heterosexual adult men belonging to the middle and lower middle class have been negotiating sex and love with their potential partners, how they have been dealing with gender relations that cross these contacts in the present, and how, in these digital intermediations, they perform, update and tension models of masculinities. Thus, the main objective of this dissertation was to understand how these communicational resources have influenced the form in which these men, born between 1995, understand and perform their own maculinity, ruled by the logic of romantic consumption, in the sphere of affective capitalism, when they are incited to mobilize specific ways of relationg, not always coherent with those learned in analogic media. Among the findings of this work there is the confirmation of previous reseachers that showed the transposition of vocabulary borrowed from the world of precarious work and intensified consumption to the field of affection. The romantic utopia of the hereosexual pair is confronted with the incitement to... (Complete abstract electronic access below)

The construction of intimacy in heterosexual, longterm relationships in a South African farmworker communityAdams, Arlene 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Current mainstream theories of intimacy were derived from studies with primarily White,
middle class participants living in developed countries. However, as social contexts shape
people’s definitions, meanings and behaviours, it cannot be assumed that mainstream
intimacy conceptualisations would apply to other populations. Studies of intimacy should be
located in its social and historical context. Previous South African studies of Black and
Coloured couples mainly emphasised HIV/Aids, interpartner violence and gender inequality,
and neglected to investigate positive aspects of intimate lives of poorer communities. A lack
of such context-specific data on how South African men and women construct and
experience intimate relationships hinders appropriate and effective interventions. This study
addressed this research gap by exploring intimacy experiences of long-term heterosexual
adult Coloured couples living in a low-income semi-rural community. The objective of this
qualitative study was to gain an understanding of how the participant couples expressed and
experienced intimacy. The participants were 15 couples (i.e. 30 participants), between the
ages of 23 and 66 years, who had been married or living together for a minimum period of
two years. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore: (i) how couples
understand intimacy, and (ii) how intimacy is expressed and experienced in committed adult
heterosexual relationships. Theoretically, this study was informed by social constructionism
and interviews were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis method. The
following themes were identified: (i) closeness means being together, (ii) sex and intimacy
(iii) closeness in talking (iv) expressions and experiences of intimacy/closeness through acts
of care, (v) alcohol disrupts closeness (vi) family of origin and the constructions of intimacy;
and (vii) community constructions and norms.
Although much of the international literature suggests that mutual self-disclosure is the
foundation for intimacy, self-disclosure did not feature prominently in the narratives of this
study’s narratives. Closeness was expressed through sharing in practical and tangible ways.
Gender was pertinent to these couples’ experiences and gender roles were fundamental to
their intimacy perceptions and behaviours. Despite some contestations of hegemonic
masculinity and femininity constructions, most of the participants did not demonstrate an active awareness or resistance regarding learned gender roles. They did not seem to consider
these gender roles as problematic, limited or limiting, nor did they indicate alternative gender
ideas. This was attributed partly to poverty and low education levels, which constrain
people’s access to alternative gender perspectives. Religion and community influences also
play an important role in their understanding of their role as partner. Although Christianity
endorses traditional gender ideas, the participants themselves felt that their religious beliefs
and practices facilitated intimate experiences, and prevented alcohol abuse and domestic
violence. In conclusion, implications for policy and practice in terms of gender inequality
and alcohol abuse are discussed, as are the limitations of the study.
heteroseksuele, volwasse paartjies in 'n lae-inkomste semi-landelike gemeenskap intimiteit
Ten
Alhoewel

The mediating and moderating effects of women's attachment style on interrelationships among emotional abuse, physical aggression and relational stability.Weston, Rebecca 12 1900 (has links)
This purpose of this study was to combine two bodies of literature on relationships, attachment and violence. Given the impact of men's physical aggression and emotional abuse on women, it is likely that these behaviors would also affect attachment. A model proposing that women's attachment style mediated and moderated the relationship between partners' physical and emotional abuse and the stability of women's relationships was tested. Archival data were used from two waves of interviews with a sample of lowincome, ethnically diverse community women. Most (89%) of the initial 835 participants of Project HOW: Health Outcomes of Women completed at least one additional interview providing information on the status of their initial relationships. Of these women, 39% were African American, 30% were Euro-American, and 31% were Mexican American. The effects of men's psychological abuse and physical violence on women's attachment style were tested with regression analyses. The interrelationships between partners' abuse, attachment and relational stability were tested with SEM. Attachment style was expected to moderate the associations among variables and mediate the impact of partners' negative behavior on relational stability. In regression analyses, partners' psychological abuse predicted avoidant and anxious, but not secure attachment ratings. Violence, although significant, explained less variance than psychological abuse for insecure attachment ratings. SEM indicated Physical Aggression was not a significant predictor of Attachment Rating in any group. Moderation was not found. There were no differences between attachment groups. Therefore, attachment was tested in the sample as a mediator. As in analyses for each group, the path from Physical Aggression to Attachment Rating was not significant. In the final model, Emotional Abuse predicted Physical Aggression and Attachment Rating mediated the effect of Emotional Abuse on Relational Stability. Specifically, Emotional Abuse increased (insecure) Attachment Rating, which decreased Relational Stability. Overall, previous research in the violence literature was extended by showing that emotional abuse affected attachment, rather than the reverse.
