The research aims at investigating whether five groups of young people, when interacting with TV, are able to manage their emotions. Therefore, in the theoretical discussion, we sought support firstly in the main European and Latin American authors who have addressed the topic of youth as a category invented in the nineteenth century and reinforced the importance of television for juvenile perspectives from the 1950s. In regard to television and its reception, we made use of the theoretical contributions of authors who discuss themes related to the dimensions of persuasion and seduction. Finally, we looked to the recent contributions of psychology, sociology, education, communication and especially of neuroscience to understand the role of emotions in decision-making processes in general, and in conforming social behavior in particular, relating these contributions to the role of television. As for the methodological dimension, we use qualitative research, ans as a main technique we made use, to collect informations, of focus groups together with personal observation and field diary. Each chapter drew some analogy from Greek mythology to illustrate the interpretations. The corpus of data was constituted by the discussions of five groups of young people, in two meetings conducted with each group. The first meeting tried to understand the interaction of young people with television in general; the second aimed at apprehending their perception in relation to two advertisements. Data revealed that most of them see TV having a primary interest in entertainment and fun; their interest is mostly escaping from reality. They have difficulty in recognizing emotions and feelings generated by television and advertising, in one hand, and in having capacity to manage these emotions in everyday interaction, on the other hand.

This study highlights threats and violence within correctional facilities, where the focus is directed towards the correctional officers' feelings that arise in these situations. The aim of this study has been to examine if colleagues' presence has an impact on the emotions that the correctional officers experience and on how these emotions are handled. The study is based on qualitative interviews of semi-structured character. A total of ten interviews were conducted with correctional officers from correctional facilities in Stockholm and Uppsala. What the correctional officer's has in common is that they all have experienced threats and violence at their workplace. The correctional officers' descriptions have been analyzed on the basis of Arlie Russel Hochschild's theory of emotions and Randall Collins's theory of interaction rituals. Both theories highlight aspects of the management of emotions, on an individual as well as on a group level. The result of the study indicates that the correctional officers experience different feelings in threatening and violent situations. In these situations the presence of colleagues is significant when it comes to how correctional officers are handling their emotions. Expectations from colleagues seem to affect the correctional officers to hide feelings such as anxiety, stress and fear. Instead the correctional officers show feelings of calm and control which, according to them, complies with the colleagues' expectations. The result also shows that good cohesiveness within the working group affects the correctional officers to feel calm in threatening and violent situations. Other factors that seem to affect the emotions that correctional officers experience and how the emotions are handled are which colleagues the correctional officers are working with and how many colleagues that attends in the situation. Furthermore the result indicates that colleagues have a significant importance when it comes to handling emotions after threatening and violent situations. Debriefing was described as important, by the correctional officers, to vent their emotions after a critical situation. How the debriefing was applied in practice differed among the correctional officers.

Savina, Cristina, Johansson Gunnarsson, Yasmine January 2015 (has links)
This study has, based on hermeneutic science, taken place in a psychiatric workplace in order to reach an understanding of what it can imply on micro level to work in such organizations. We initiated the study by reading scientific articles in order to increase our understanding of the field which also gave us tools to work with. This brought up the significance of collaboration and solidarity in the workplace and also the management of emotions the employees performs as important components for the study. The psychiatry is seen as an emotional labor which implies that employees may be affected by the strong emotions that are found at work. The emotional nature may imply the need for the employees to manage their emotions in order to avoid the possible impact it might entail. Their attitude towards patients and emotions along with the interaction rituals and collaboration within the workgroup are examples of strategies the employees use to manage the emotions. This stated above was studied based on the theories of emotional labor, interaction rituals and effective teams. This, along with scientific articles and qualitative interviews, gave us material to reach a result.

Nové služby a management emocí v postindustriální společnosti / New services and emotional management in postindustrial societyValentová, Barbora January 2012 (has links)
The diploma thesis New services and emotion management in postindustrial society concerns about the new kind of services, which started to occupy a very important position in the most intimate and personal spheres of human life (partner life, bringing up or even giving birth to children). With the development of these services the society finds itself on the border of "commodification", when more and more realms of human life is governed by market mechanisms and things, which used to belong to personal life, are becoming just goods for us. The borders between these two areas are more permeable and that reflects upon borrowing of rhetorics and discourses across these realms. With shifting of boarders our ways of thinking, feeling and acting change. Some kind of depersonalization arises and our relationship to our own personal life and to its meaning is becoming mediated by those services and those, who provide them. With these changes individuals deal through involvement of emotion labor. In the thesis these mechanisms and their influence on feeling and acting on the personal level and formation of self are explored. Explored are also the functioning of contradictory mechanisms of decommodification, which are being involved when the logic of market goes too far and individuum begins to feel too...
