Philip De La Mare, Pioneer Industrialist

Philip De La Mare was born 1823, in the village of Grouville, Island of Jersey, of the Channel Islands. His father and grandfather were contractors who built piers. Philip received a common school education and while in his youth learned the trade of blacksmith and mechanic. In 1847, Philip De La Mare's father contracted to build the Albert Pier on Jersey Island. Philip was associated with his father on the contract. In 1849, he heard a Mormon Elder preach the Gospel for the first time; he was convinced of the truthfulness of the message and was baptized. One month later Elder William C. Dunbar conferred upon Philip De La Mare the Melchizedek Priesthood.In the autumn of that year, Apostle John Taylor visited the Island of Jersey and obtained a generous gift of money from Philip De La Mare to assist in financing the translation of the Book of Mormon into the French language. He was also called as a missionary by Elder Taylor and went with him to France. During his mission, Philip De La Mare assisted John Taylor in an investigation of the sugar beet industry in that country. After investigation, they were convinced that this would be a feasible industry for Utah.

Supplier Involvement in Product Development: A Supplier Perspective

This thesis explores the supplier perspective of supplier involvement in product development. Supplier involvement in product development is crucial for many companies to increase resource flexibility, access competence, reduce costs and time to market, among others. The existing literature focuses primarily on the customer perspective of supplier involvement, e.g., challenges and critical factors customers should consider. A few studies have focused on the supplier perspective. This research gap is addressed in this thesis by studying the conditions influencing the suppliers’ involvement in customers’ product development. This thesis explores two research questions: “What are the challenges suppliers experience when being involved in customers’ product development?”, and “What mitigating mechanisms and critical factors influence suppliers’ involvement in customers’ product development?”. The identified challenges originated [FF1] both from the customer and the supplier, indicating that both types of challenges must be focused on. The study also identified interdependencies between the challenges, implying that one challenge may lead to the occurrence of other challenges. The study suggests mitigating mechanisms to deal with the identified challenges. The identified critical factors influenced both the efficiency and effectiveness of supplier involvement in product development, e.g., lead-time, development cost, product quality, and cost. The study indicates that adopting a dual perspective and considering the challenges and critical factors for both the customer and the supplier, can support the involved supplier. The results build on findings from a case study including four SMEs.

Relevant Information at a Glance

Northvolt has an internal mobile application called the Factory App. The digitalization team at Northvolt initiated the idea that widgets could be used for the Factory App as a tool to give the users information at a glance. The Factory App is mainly used by people working with the manufacturing process. To provide information at a glance, an investigation of what type of information is relevant for different users needed to be conducted. Further, a design concept of widgets for the Factory App would also need to be created. This research aimed to approach this with the method participatory design. Part of the participatory design is the following steps: semi-structured interviews with a virtual smartphone as a prop, a design workshop where the participants among other things sketched designs of widgets, high-fidelity prototyping, and a user evaluation survey. The interview result showed that machine metrics were relevant data for six out of ten participants and that metrics were important for most participants. The outcome of the study was ten design prototypes of widgets that were created based on the interview results, the workshop results, and the design of other internal digital tools at Northvolt. This research concludes that widgets based on the provided design concept can help give relevant and instant information to people with specific positions at Northvolt. / Northvolt har en intern mobilapplikation som heter Factory App. Digitaliseringsteamet på Northvolt initierade idén att så kallade widgets skulle kunna användas som ett verktyg för att ge användarna av applikationen information i ett ögonkast. Factory-appen används främst av personer som arbetar med tillverkningsprocessen på Northvolt. För att ge information i ett ögonkast behövde en utredning göras av vilken typ av information som är relevant för olika användare. Vidare skulle ett designkoncept av widgets för Factory-appen också behövas. Denna forskning syftade till att anta sig detta med den så kallade metoden Participatory Design. De olika stegen av Participatory Design som utfördes är som följer: semistrukturerade intervjuer med en virtuell smartphone som rekvisita, en designworkshop där deltagarna bland annat skissade på design av widgets, prototypande av hög fidelity och en utvärderande användarundersökning. Intervjuresultatet visade att maskinmätningar var relevanta data för sex av tio deltagare och att mätvärden var viktiga för de flesta deltagare. Resultatet av studien var tio designprototyper av widgets som skapades utifrån intervjuresultaten, workshopresultaten och designen av andra interna digitala verktyg på Northvolt. Denna forskning drar slutsatsen att widgets baserade på det tillhandahållna designkonceptet kan hjälpa till att ge relevant och omedelbar information till personer med specifika positioner på Northvolt.

"This study concerns the examination of the historical importance and achievements of a small cotton mill located in the agrarian Texas community of Itasca, Texas. Newspaper clippings and numerous interviews with former mill employees and Itasca citizens supplied factual material pertaining to the Itasca mill; however, company records provided the basic research material for this paper... The company offices have since been destroyed, and most of the records are now in the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas...In the final chapter, the author concludes that this mill, like numerous other southern mills, fell under the influence of northern companies because of undercapitalization which severely limited available operating capital. Even though the mill eventually prospered, it never managed to free itself from the influence of northern commission companies. In the final analysis, the Itasca company proved to be different from other cotton duck mills in the South in its development of a line of unique decorative fabrics sold by mail as well as through thirteen company-owned stores."-- leaf 1.

Optimizing inventory-ordering policies in supply chain management : a case study on a selected company from the Vaal Region

(Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology) Vaal University of Technology| / Implementing either periodic or continuous inventory review model within most manufacturing-companies-supply chains, as a management tool, incurs higher costs. These high costs affect the system flexibility which in turn affects the level of service required to satisfy customers. However, these effects are not clearly understood. This may be due to the fact that lead time and demand which are important input parameters of the manufacturing supply chain are not designed to be fully utilized under different and uncertain conditions such as seasonality, poor manufacturing, poor supplies and delivery performance, etc. Coming up with a hybrid inventory model which may combine, in some sense a continuous (r, Q) and a periodic (R, S) inventory review models can be useful in dealing with such problem. Therefore, more attention should be first devoted to formulating accurate models for lead time and demand that incorporate uncertainty. This study presents a simulation based approach that assesses the effect of uncertainty on the cost of implementing a continuous (r, Q), periodic (R, S) and hybrid inventory review models while considering appropriate constraint such as customer service and system flexibility. The stochastic representations of demand and lead time are proposed and used in the simulation models. Results reveal that under a unique situation, implementing a continuous (r, Q) inventory review model may cause manager to under-budget while the use of a periodic (R, S) inventory review models may lead to over budget and vice versa. Further investigation shows that the cost of implementing the hybrid inventory model, although higher at the beginning of operation, seems to be the most cost effective one over time. The result also reveal optimal re-order point path and optimal review interval path which when followed, should lead to optimal inventory cost path as demand and lead time fluctuate. Thus, a management guide is proposed that can be used by managers in making inventory decision.

Given that the end-customer has become more demanding, the retailer has to deliver products according to the market demands, which have forced manufacturing companies to constantly search for new opportunities to reduce costs and improve efficiency. It is, therefore important to choose suppliers that are able to compete with the market demands.The market demands in the textile industry have lead to shorter product life cycles, which have caused manufacturers to deliver flexibility with high technology to compete successfully on the global market. To achieve the market requirements the underlying factor is to be aware and optimally use and control time. New technology can have a major influence in the production development, if the company choose to take benefit of the advantages, by optimal allocation of the internal resources the productivity and efficiency will increase, to accomplish a competitive advantage. One way to achieve this is by investing in a Unit Production System.In our thesis we have questioned what the main driving forces for an apparel manufacturing company is when it chooses to invest in new technology. Our previous knowledge says that manufacturing companies are forced to invest in a UPS to deliver to the market demands; therefore our sub-question investigates whether market demands impact the investment in new technology.In our theory we have concluded aspects in our study which is important for the reader to have an understanding of. We describe the textile industry from the view of Porters value chain and elaborate some concepts and their definitions, which will be used as a basis throughout our thesis. Finally we present a model of Five forces that determine industry competition made by Porter, to use as an analysis method when investigating whether an UPS may bring a competitive advantage.Our field study has been carried out in South India, where we have visited five textile factories and interviewed managers. We have questioned their decision-making judgment about implementing or choosing not to implement a UPS. Other production factors and general information about the companies have been asked to have an understanding of underlying factors. We have also had the opportunity to observe their manufacturing handling systems and seen how they have chosen to use this in an optimal way.Our previous knowledge of this subject has routed to that our research will be performed in a hermeneutics scientific approach. The theoretical part describes the contents of each chapter. This section was written on the basis of domestic and foreign literary sources. This work is focused on analysis of current situation in chosen company for the calendar year 2015 in section of production, planning, capacity utilization, material and information flow, distribution and new product development. At the end of the practical part are recommended the proposals for improvement.

This master´s thesis discusses the introduction of a paperless office in manufacturing companies. The main goal of our work is to create a general framework for implementing paperless offices in such enterprises. The theoretical part presents the needs of today´s information society, focusing on the requirements of manufacturing companies. Next, the thesis describes the closely related topics such as company documentation and document archivation. The key chapter of the theoretical part deals with the subject of paperless office itself by discussing the current knowledge about different approaches, digitization, benefits, risks and suitable tools of information systems. The outcome of our work - and its main contribution - is the newly proposed general framework, which may serve as a guide for implementing paperless office solutions in the manufacturing companies. The practical part of the thesis demonstrates an application of the suggested framework to propose a solution for the company called Mi-King s.r.o.
