Analysis of the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) as a promotional tool for the South African automotive industry in the global automotive environment

Lamprecht, Norman 30 June 2006 (has links)
The Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) was implemented on 1 September 1995 in the context of the country's political and economic liberalisation and the major structural shift in government policy and the trade regime. In an intensely competitive global environment, the strategies of a few dominant motor vehicle manufacturers, mainly operating from the Triad regions of North America, Europe and Japan, impact significantly on the developments of the global automotive industry. Over the past decade the small, highly protected and inwardly focused South African automotive industry has become fully integrated in the global strategies of foreign parent companies. As South Africa's leading manufacturing sector, the automotive sector is contributing significantly to the country's economy in terms of exports, investment, employment and the gross domestic product. The objective of the study was to establish and measure the relevance and value of the MIDP as a promotional tool in the global automotive environment by capturing the responses and perceptions of direct automotive industry exporters and stakeholders for * the South African automotive industry in general, and * the companies forming part of the empirical survey. To satisfy the objectives of the study, the research methodology incorporated an extensive primary and secondary research phase (qualitative and quantitative). A structured empirical survey was used to collect the primary data. The survey data were captured and processed by the Bureau for Market Research (BMR), Unisa. The main findings of the study are that: * The promotional relevance and value of the MIDP as a promotional tool is embedded in the programme's ability to trigger interest in the South African automotive industry, to generate business and to attract investments. * The MIDP is successful in contributing to the automotive sector's international competitiveness and is therefore a very important promotional tool for convincing foreign parent companies to consider South Africa as an investment destination. * The South African automotive industry would not be able to cope with global competition without the MIDP. * Different factors impact on the business operations of the South African automotive industry in general and the specific company in particular and the factors are viewed differently by the selected groups based on their demographic details. The process of trade liberalisation is forcing many South African companies to encounter both intensified competition and new forms of competition. The South African government's target of a 6 percent economic growth rate by 2010 will largely depend on the ongoing successes achieved in priority sectors such as the domestic automotive sector. / Business Management / M. Employees' adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act in the steel manufacturing sector

Mojapelo, Jerry 09 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Labour Relations Management, Faculty of Management Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / Industrial accidents have proved to be more prevalent and costly than anticipated especially in developing countries including South Africa. Occupational accidents have direct and indirect cost implications for an organisation as well as society. Governments in many countries have tried to implement legislation to try and curb the scourge of industrial accidents. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the level of employee adherence to the Occupational, Health and Safety Act (OHSA) 85 of 1993 in the steel manufacturing sector. This research provided an overview of various factors that influences employee’s level of understanding and adherence to the OHSA. This included factors such as information and training in health and safety; employee safety perception, employee safety awareness, employee safety adherence, employee behaviour with regard to health and safety, the role of the union in health and safety issues, accident reporting mechanism, and employee’s perceptions of the influence of rewards on health and safety. A structured questionnaire consisting of closed-ended questions was developed and disseminated in order to gather relevant data. Given the scale of the research, a quantitative research method was implemented. The population for the study strictly consisted of employees working in the steel manufacturing sector. A purposive sampling technique was selected. Statistical Package for Social Sciences 22.0 (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The sample size of (n) =165 employees was involved in the study. The response rate for the total was (98.5%). Descriptive, frequency, correlation, regression and means analysis was employed in this study. The results of the study indicated that majority of the employees were aware and adhered with the requirements of the OHSA with the organisation. It was suggested that strong stake holder partnerships between unions, employers and employees be formulated. The state should reinforce the Department of Labour inspectorate by giving it more powers to be able to execute its task meritoriously and efficiently. It further suggested that the state must rapidly focus on recruiting and training more health and safety labour inspectors to ensure appropriate enforcement of health and safety regulations. Lastly it is advisable to create and engrave a health and safety culture within the organisation that focuses on highly on employee involvement and mutual trust. The proposed recommendation for the study, limitations and the conclusion of the study were outlined in Chapter 5.

Fillion, Barbara 12 1900 (has links)
In the last decade, the Quebec manufacturing sector has undergone major transformations. Since globalization has led companies to restructure their operations, 96% of Quebec's manufacturing plants have chosen to use outsourcing as a strategy (Jalette, 2004). However, we are now aware that subcontracting is sometimes a disappointing process for businesses. Due to the evolution of some internal or external organizational factors, that contribute to change the context in which the subcontracting decisions were initially taken (eg. increased costs of labor and transportation, technological changes), businesses sometimes choose to overturn outsourcing decisions by opting for internalization (OECD, 2013). The concept of internalization refers to the action of a company to bring back to a plant an activity that had previously been transferred outside of it whether due to outsourcing activities in an independent company or due to relocation to another facility within the same company (Jalette & Chevance, 2008). This study aims to explain the managerial decision to internalize through social dynamics inherent to industrial relations, going beyond purely economic factors. The effect on internalization of four independent variables related to industrial relations is studied, namely the strategic capacity of the local union, the internal solidarity of the local union and its external solidarity, as well as the climate of labor-management relations. The theoretical framework of this research is made of Jalette’s typology of union positions (2005), Levesque and Murray’s union power resources model (2003), and the Dastmalchian (2008) work dealing with industrial relations climate. This study uses data collected through a questionnaire survey conducted in 2005 among presidents of local unions within the Quebec’s manufacturing sector and affiliated with the CSD and the FTQ. The study reveals that 24% of respondents experienced internalization of previously subcontracted activities in the two years preceding the survey. In addition, the results show that chances of internalizing activities increase when multiple strategies and actions aiming towards internalization are adopted by the local union, when the union life of a local union improves, and when union leave time increases. However, chances of internalizing activities decrease when the local union’s power level increases. Internalization also decreases when the climate of labor relations deteriorates. In short, the results of this research show that unions do not have to undergo globalization and, by their actions, they are able to influence its course, notably by promoting internalization of previously outsourced activities.

Secteurs manufacturiers dans le système communautaire d’échange de quotas d’émissions / Manufacturing sectors in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme

Lecourt, Stephen 19 June 2014 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the aggregated non-power sector covered under the EU ETS. First, the non-power sector contribution to CO2 emissions changes in the first two phases of the Scheme (2005-2012), both from a final demand perspective and a supply perspective, is compared to that of the power sector at first. Then, the implications of the non-power sector specific free allocation methodology in the third phase of the Scheme (2013-2020) are scrutinized, which constitutes one of the first thorough assessment of Phase 3 benchmarking. It is showed that both from a final demand perspective and a supply perspective, the non-power sector, through its interrelated character and its activity levels, has contributed to changes in EU ETS CO2 emissions more than the power sector did, over the 2005-2012 period. It is also showed that, despite its free allocation redistribution effects, benchmark-based Phase 3 free allocation remains flawed and may benefit from further improvements to be up to the central role of the non-power sector in the EU ETS dynamics.

The relationship between strategies and performance in the manufacturing sector in ZImbabwe during economic crisis

Nyoni, Josphat 10 1900 (has links)
There are different views on the nature and content of strategies that ensure positive performance in the economic crisis environment. This has created the need for studies focusing on the relationship between strategies and performance in different economic crises. Manufacturing firms in Zimbabwe have experienced declining performance since 1996. It is against this background that this study examined the dimension of strategic orientations (as measures of strategies) exercised by firms to determine their relationship with performance during the economic crisis. Data on the various dimensions of strategic orientation was collected through questionnaires, while data on performance were collected through questionnaires and financial statements. The study sample was obtained through a stratified sampling technique which falls within the sphere of probability sampling methods. The multiple regression analysis was used to examine the relationships between the six dimensions of strategic orientation and performance. The analysis dimension of strategic orientation was dominantly exercised by many firms. The analysis dimension of strategic orientation was also the most effective because it had a positive relationship with performance (positive profitability and growth). This makes the analysis dimension of strategic orientation relevant in economic crisis. The study showed that the pro-activeness dimension of strategic orientation focused by very few firms had a positive relationship with performance (positive profitability and growth) and hence making it relevant in economic crisis. Moreover, it was established that the relationship between aggressiveness and riskiness dimensions of strategic orientation was negative and hence less relevant in economic crisis. It is therefore recommended that, for manufacturing firms in Zimbabwe to survive, improve performance and ensure sustainability in the current economic crisis environment, they need to focus dominantly on the analysis and pro-activeness dimensions of strategic orientation. This requires firms to invest more in research and development, develop strategic partnerships with other firms, strong networks, innovative and creative capabilities. In addition, firms must avoid fighting competitors and taking risky decisions. This study considered firms that are currently operational and it is recommended that future studies consider firms that closed during the economic crisis to acquire a deeper understanding of the effective strategies in economic crisis. / Business Management / D.B.L.

Influencia del Liderazgo Transformacional en la Intención de Rotación de los Trabajadores del Sector Textil Manufactura en Gamarra / Influence of Transformational Leadership on the Intention of Rotation of Workers in the Textile Manufacturing Sector in Gamarra

Bravo Ameghino, Andrea Fernanda, Rojas Romero, Alicia Graciela 30 September 2020 (has links)
The present investigation analyzes the influence of Transformational Leadership in the Intention of Rotation of the Workers of the Textile Manufacturing Sector in Gamarra. This is the Commercial Emporium with the largest participation of textile companies within the country and is considered one of the largest sources of employment. A correlational study was carried out with a sample of 376 people, corresponding to the total amount of the EAP existing in the Commercial Emporium. In order to check the hypotheses presented, a data analysis was used with a simple linear regression for the general objective and multiple linear regression for the secondary objectives. The results obtained establish that there is a direct and negative relationship between Transformational Leadership and the Intention of Rotation, in such a way that if one grows, the other decreases, being in this case that 9% of the changes generated can be explained. in the intention of rotation. These findings are important and are of great knowledge contribution for the micro and small companies of the Textile Manufacturing Sector in Gamarra, in order to understand the impact that transformational leadership causes in the intention of rotation of its employees and, with it, the talent drain and possible delay in operations. / Tesis

Does capital structure theory remain relevant under abnormal macroeconomic environment: the case of Zimbabwean manufacturing firms during the period 2009-2018

Magomo, Norma Tariro 12 1900 (has links)
The main objective of this study was to test if the applicability of known capital structure theories holds water in abnormal economic environments, in particular, in Zimbabwe. Using secondary data collected for listed manufacturing firms from 2009-2018, results from a fixed effects regression model concluded that profitability, company size, non-debt tax shields, firm liquidity, inflation and GDP were significant in explaining capital structure decisions in Zimbabwe. In the context of South Africa, company size, asset tangibility, firm liquidity and inflation were found to be significant. The pecking order and trade-off theories were the only two theories that were found to be applicable in the Zimbabwean context, and the application of both theories indicated the use of internally generated funds as opposed to external finance sources, such as debt and equity. These results attribute to the abnormality and instability of the Zimbabwean economy, especially with regards to limited access to capital. / Business Management / M. Com. (Business Management)

A comparative study of investment incentives available to the manufacturing sector in South Africa, Malaysia and Singapore

Wentzel, Martha Susanna Isabella 11 1900 (has links)
This study identifies additional investment incentives, applicable to the manufacturing sector, which the South African government could introduce to encourage investors to choose the South African manufacturing sector as a desired investment destination. A comparison is made between the relevant investment incentives provided to manufacturing companies by Malaysia and Singapore and those provided by South Africa, in order to examine the similarities and differences between these incentives. In the light of these findings, recommendations are made for revised or additional investment incentives in South Africa to promote investment in South African manufacturing companies and reduce some of the barriers that prevent local and foreign investment in South Africa. / Accounting / M. Warren, Rhode Island : l'évolution d'une petite communauté canadienne-française établie en Nouvelle-Angleterre, 1895-1910

Bélisle, Marie 08 1900 (has links)
In the aftermath of the Civil War, the small manufacturing center of Warren, Rhode Island, attracted many French Canadians immigrants in search of work and economic betterment. They rapidly organized themselves by establishing a parish network, by founding several mutual aid societies and by multiplying shops that were ready to welcome more and more customers. The early stages of development of the community (1888-1895) have already been observed by Jean Lamarre in his Master’s thesis (1895). On one hand, the researcher noticed a gradual process of settlement occurring among the parishioners and, on the other hand, the analysis of their socio-economic profile indicated that most of them worked in the cotton mills. By this study, we wanted to revisit this community when its presence in Warren’s industrial and urban area seemed consolidated. Through a systematic use of the unpublished nominative lists from the 1910 Federal Census of the United States as well as published government documents, this thesis assesses the extent of socio-economic changes that have transformed the community over the course of fifteen years. The observation of the integration process of French Canadian into the industrial environment is supplemented by an analysis of women and children’s contribution into the household economy. The main conclusions of this study show that despite the fact that a significant proportion of workers are still employed in the manufacturing sector, the French Canadian population of Warren mainly enjoys a better quality of life in 1910 than in the earlier era. Their socio-economic situation places them closer to their Yankees and Irish neighbours than to their “new immigration” counterparts (Poles, Italians, Portuguese).
