SHAPE MEMORY BEHAVIOR OF SINGLE AND POLYCRYSTALLINE NICKEL RICH NICKEL TITANIUM ALLOYS

Kaya, Irfan 01 January 2014 (has links)
NiTi is the most commonly used shape memory alloy (SMA) and has been widely used for bio-medical, electrical and mechanical applications. Nickel rich NiTi shape memory alloys are coming into prominence due to their distinct superelasticity and shape memory properties as compared to near equi-atomic NiTi shape memory alloys. Besides, their lower density and higher work output than steels makes these alloys an excellent candidate for aerospace and automotive industry. Shape memory properties and phase transformation behavior of high Ni-rich Ni54Ti46 (at.%) polycrystals and Ni-rich Ni51Ti49 (at.%) single-crystals are determined. Their properties are sensitive to heat treatments that affect the phase transformation behavior of these alloys. Phase transformation properties and microstructure were investigated in aged Ni54Ti46 alloys with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to reveal the precipitation characteristics and R-phase formation. It was found that Ni54Ti46 has the ability to exhibit perfect superelasticity under high stress levels (~2 GPa) with 4% total strain after 550°C-3h aging. Stress independent R-phase transformation was found to be responsible for the change in shape memory behavior with stress. The shape memory responses of [001], [011] and [111] oriented Ni51Ti49 single-crystals alloy were reported under compression to reveal the orientation dependence of their shape memory behavior. It has been found that transformation strain, temperatures and hysteresis, Classius-Clapeyron slopes, critical stress for plastic deformation are highly orientation dependent. The effects of precipitation formation and compressive loading at selected temperatures on the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) properties of a [111]-oriented Ni51Ti49 shape memory alloy were revealed. Additionally, aligned Ni4Ti3 precipitates were formed in a single crystal of Ni51Ti49 alloy by aging under applied compression stress along the [111] direction. Formation of a single family of Ni4Ti3 precipitates were exhibited significant TWSME without any training or deformation. When the homogenized and aged specimens were loaded in martensite, positive TWSME was observed. After loading at high temperature in austenite, the homogenized specimen did not show TWSME while the aged specimen revealed negative TWSME.

Comportement mécanique et durabilité de structures en béton renforcées par des armatures composites internes / Mechanical behaviour and durability of concrete structures reinforced by internal composite rebars

Rolland, Arnaud 27 March 2015 (has links)
To prevent such degradations on new infrastructures, the use of corrosion-free reinforcements, such as Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bars based on glass, carbon or aramid fibers, is gaining interest. Specific guidelines are already available in several countries (USA, Canada or Japan for instance), that define the design principles and good practices for this type of internal rebars; beside, many FRP RC structures have been built and are in service in these countries. Although the development of these new reinforcing bars is quite promising, infrastructures owners are still reluctant for their wide-scale use, especially in France. There are still major concerns regarding the long term behavior of FRP RC structures, and more particularly, the durability of glass fibers reinforced polymers (GFRP) when subjected to an alkaline environment, and the ageing behavior of the GFRP/concrete bonding as well. In this context, the present study aims at developing for the first time in France, a set of methodologies that allows : to characterize the main physical/mechanical properties of different types of FRP bars from the marketto assess the durability of GFRP bars (the most common type of bar) and their interface with concrete through relevant accelerated ageing procedures. The first part of this study was thus devoted to the physical/mechanical characterization of a selection of commercially available FRP rebars, based on glass, carbon or aramid fibers, and to the mechanical behavior of corresponding FRP/concrete interfaces. Beside the microstructural characterization of the various FRP materials by microscopy and thermal analysis techniques, tensile and short beam tests were developed in order to determine the tensile properties (Young's modulus and strength) and the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the bars. Specific pull-out tests then made it possible to evaluate the influence of several parameters (type of fibers, diameter and surface geometry of the bars) on the mechanism of load transfer at the bar/concrete interface. A main originality of the proposed approach relied on the instrumentation of several test bodies by optical fiber strain sensors, which were installed along the bar/concrete interface. Such a distributed measurement system provided local information in the form of tensile strain profiles of the bars along the interface, and made it possible to determine the effective transfer length of the various types of FRP bars. As a complement to the previous experimental study, an analytical and numerical modeling work was initiated to simulate the pull-out tests and investigate more closely the interfacial mechanisms involved in the FRP bar/concrete bond behavior. In this line, an improved interface model was first proposed, which was then implemented in a finite element model (cohesive zone model formulated in the context of damage mechanics). Finally, an accelerated ageing protocol was developed and applied to the GFRP bars, either alone or embedded in a concrete medium. The retention properties of both bars and interfaces were determined after various periods of exposure (up to 240 days). Except a drop of tensile properties observed for GFRP bars that were directly immersed in an alkaline solution, which is considered as a very severe environment compared to actual service conditions, no significant loss of interfacial properties was detected on aged specimens compared to the initial state

Caractérisation par corrélation d'images et modélisation par zones cohésives du comportement mécanique des interfaces / Characterization by digital image correlation and cohesive zone modeling of interfaces mechanics

Azab, Marc 29 August 2016 (has links)
This work concerns the study of materials and assemblies structures integrity using cohesive zone model (CZM) to analyze fracture. These models have the advantage to incorporate a characteristic length in the description of fracture initiation and propagation, which can lead to size effects studies. Three parameters characterize the CZM : the maximal cohesive traction Tmax to which the interface or the material can resist before the onset of debonding, the critical crack opening from which a crack is created locally and finally the traction-separation law which describe the cohesive traction distribution depending on fracture process. The main purpose of this thesis is to identify the cohesive zone parameters describing fracture at the interface or in the material. The first step was to elaborate an analytical model which can describe properly the DCB or Wedge Test kinematic, to characterize mode I fracture. Despite the fact of mode I fracture, the displacement field near the crack-tip is not K-dominant for these tests, at least not always. Various traction-separation laws were considered in order to study their influence on the local and global response of the test. An inverse identification methodology has been proposed from the analytical model, which can extract cohesive parameters through a least square error minimization between numerical and analytical deflection. Once validated, it was subsequently applied to a real Wedge test. The experimental displacement field measurement was done due to digital image correlation measurement.A deep analysis to evaluate the fracture process zone length has been also dedicated in the case of Wedge or DCB Tests. This analysis shows that Lcz is not an intrinsic interface or materials property and it can vary depending on the sample's geometry, the cohesive zone properties or the traction-separation law. A new expression to determine Lcz was established for rectangular and triangular cohesive zone.A second local identification approach, based on the work of Réhoré and Estevez (2013), has been also proposed. It was implemented to analyze the Wedge test, before applying it to a notched four points bending test. A round trip between numerical simulations and experimental results allow identifying the cohesive properties in the materiel or at the interface.

[en] CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF COAL BELONGING TO RIO BONITO FORMATION, SC / [pt] CARACTERIZAÇÃO DO COMPORTAMENTO MECÂNICO DO CARVÃO DA FORMAÇÃO RIO BONITO, CAMADA BARRO BRANCO - SC

LUCIANA ANDRADE PEIXOTO SILVA 23 August 2018 (has links)
[en] Mechanisms involved in geological storage of CO2 and eventual production of methane are complex due to a number of different factors involved. One of the important factors to be taken into account is the geomechanical behaviour of coal, key to the success of the exploration as well as the characterization of the pore structure of the material.Coal can be regarded as a sedimentary rock possessing two perpendicular families of microfissures called cleats. This work presents results of an experimental program aiming at the characterization of the mechanical properties of coal from the Barro Branco formation. A constitutive model (Lade-Kim s model) was tested in order to check its validity in the representation of the stress-strain-strength behaviour of the coal. Lade-Kim s model is well accepted for the representation of the mechanical behaviour of soft rocks. Furthermore, in order to characterize the porous structure of the material, a number of tests were performed such as: X Ray Micro CT scan, scanning electron microscopy, minipermeameter determination of permeability and mercury injection porosimetry.

In the automotive industry, for example, it is anticipated that the use of such materials will be increased in the near future. Some characteristics of these materials can be improved through heat treatments, considering the entire mass of the product or in specific regions of a part, for which it is necessary a particular mechanical behavior. This work focused on the initial investigation of a local heat treatment by laser radiation, a controlled form of energy addition, in the mechanical properties and microstructure of two of these materials. The studied materials are the dual phase steel (DP 600) and the transformed induced plasticity steel (TRIP 750), and the desired contribution here was to provide information about the interaction between the laser radiation and the studied materials for a given range of thermal processing parameters. To characterize the materials as received and after proposed laser heat treatments, metallographic evaluation, X-ray diffraction, and hardness and tensile tests were performed. It was found that, for the range of process parameters investigated, there were significant changes in the characteristics of the materials, notably an increase in surface hardness, reaching values corresponding to twice of those for materials without treatment, in the yield limits, with increases of up to 15% with respect to the base material, and strength limits, with increases up to about 30% with respect to the base material. On the other hand, there was a decrease in the elongation of materials, when subjected to tensile tests, up to 80% in comparison to materials without heat treatment.

Prédiction numérique des caractéristiques d'une pièce traitée par galetage : application au secteur du décolletage / Numerical prediction of the characteristics of a burnished workpiece

Degré, Fabien 01 December 2011 (has links)
Roller burnishing is a cost effective surface enhancement process. To value this process, industry needs a tool to estimate the roughness, the hardness and the residual stress distribution of a burnished workpiece. To achieve this goal, different models have been built in the past. The two most comprehensive are based on the hypothesis of equivalence between normal contact and rolling contact. In this study, a new approach of the modeling of roller burnishing is proposed. For this, physical phenomena that occur around the contact area have been precisely studied. Firstly, the mechanical problem that is posed is solved analytically assuming a perfectly elastic behavior. In this case, equivalence between normal contact and rolling contact is proved. Secondly, the effect of plasticity on that result is studied. A phenomenon of accumulation and flow of material, which effect appears to be particularly important on the mechanical and geometrical characteristics of the burnished surface is highlighted. This observation imposes to reject the hypothesis of equivalence between normal contact and rolling contact. Consequently, it is conclude that any model can't be reliable until it considers the rolling contact of the roller on the workpiece. On this basis, a new finite element model of roller burnishing is established. Finally, numerical results are compared to experimental measurements. Concerning geometrical state, a quantitatively good correlation is observed while a qualitatively agreement is obtained for the two mechanical indicators. It can be concluded that this new EF model give a better understanding of the mechanics of roller burnishing process and will give the opportunity to improve parameters process or to adapt parameters according to the wished mechanical and geometrical characteristics of the workpiece.

In Brazil, its use is focused on linings, coating and partitions, known as drywall. However, the gypsum is a material on which there is little knowledge in terms of research. And this project aims to study more this material through the production of composite gypsum with tire rubber incorporation, thus making it a sustainable material. The rubber from the retreading process scrap tires has wide application in research on concrete and mortar; but little is known about its application in gypsum. In order to reach the objective proposed in this work, scanning electron microscopy, flexural strength, compressive strength, surface hardness, water absorption, bulk density, consistency (mini-slump) and thermal behavior will be performed. In this way, it is possible to affirm that the incorporation of rubber can be interesting for the production of gypsum boards, since it can incorporate a residue without destination completely, producing plates with characteristics similar to those already used and still contributing in aspects such as density, surface hardness and thermal insulation. Thus, among the granulometries used in this study, the thick rubber can be considered the one that had better performance, since it presented characteristics of being more workable, less absorbent and more thermally insulating, besides presenting resistance to compression and flexion adequate for its use (non-structural), smaller dents and greater lightness of the material. / FAPESP: 2015/17658-4

It was found that, for the range of process parameters investigated, there were significant changes in the characteristics of the materials, notably an increase in surface hardness, reaching values corresponding to twice of those for materials without treatment, in the yield limits, with increases of up to 15% with respect to the base material, and strength limits, with increases up to... / The evolution of Medicine has enabled humans to live longer. With that, the incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) has grown, especially among males. The lack of detailed knowledge on the mechanical behavior of the abdominal aortic tissue is the main bottleneck in the improvement of the criterion for recommending corrective surgery. Therefore, many patients still die from the rupture of those aneurysms. Better understanding of the tissues mechanical behavior will allow the refinement of todays criterion, thus saving more lives. This understanding can be obtained from Continuum Mechanics, using mechanical test experimental data to evaluate and describe the behavior of the material. The data has to come from tests performed in two independet axes. This Masters thesis presents the project, manufacturing and calibration of an apparatus for the test of cylindrical biological tissues in two directions, longitudinal and circumferential. Aspects of pre-existent tests and methods and their positive and negative sides were taken into account. The specimens will come from cadavers, and it will be possible to pre-condition them, as well as to test them to the rupture. Latex tubes were used in the calibration of the apparatus, whose utilization is expected to improve the knowledge on AAA rupture probability, as well as to improve the comprehension of the penile urethral tissues behavior.
