Linguistic practice on contemporary Jordanian radio : publics and participation

Contemporary studies of media Arabic often pass over issues of media form and the broader relevance of language use. The present thesis addresses these issues directly by examining the language used in Jordanian non-government radio programmes. It examines recordings and transcriptions of a range of programme genres - primarily, morning talk shows and 'service programmes' (barāmiž ḳadamātiyya), and Islamic advice programmes, both of which feature significant audience input via call-ins. The data are examined through an interpretive form of discourse analysis, drawing on linguistic anthropological theory that analyses language as a form of performance, through comparison of radio programmes as 'units of interaction'. This is supported by sociolinguistic data obtained from the recordings, including phoneme frequency analysis, in addition to the author's experience of 6 months of fieldwork in Jordan in 2014-15. The analysis focuses on four major themes: (1) the influence of media context, specifically the sonic exclusivity and temporal evanescence of radio, on language use, as well as the impact of digital media; (2) the indexicality of certain locally salient sociolinguistic variables, and the use to which they are put in radio talk; (3) the role of language in constructing the identity, or persona, of broadcasters; and (4) the role of language in constructing and validating authoritative discourse, in particular that of Islamic texts and scripture in religious programming. Through its analysis of these themes, using selected recording excerpts as demonstrative case studies, this thesis shows that specific strategies of Arabic use in the radio setting crucially affect both the publics - the addressed audiences - of radio talk, as well as the frameworks of participation in this talk - how and to what extent broadcasters and members of the public can participate in mediated discourse. The results demonstrate the unique value of an interpretive study of linguistic performance for highlighting broader social issues, including the inclusion and exclusion of particular segments of the society through linguistic strategies - Jordanians versus non-Jordanians, Ammanis versus non-Ammanis, and pious Muslims versus non-believers; and the use of language to reassert, or occasionally challenge, dominant ideologies and discourses, such as those of gender, nationalism, and religion. This study thus contributes an examination of contemporary Jordanian non-government radio language in its social and political context - something which has not been attempted before, and which provides important insights regarding both the nature of contemporary Arabic media language and its broader social and cultural import.

The discourse of liberation: the portrayal of the gay liberation movement in South African news media from 1982 to 2006

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation reports on a study that straddles the applied linguistic fields of discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis and a sociolinguistic field recently referred to as “queer linguistics”. The study investigated the linguistic construction of gay mobilisation in South African media discourses across a period of almost 30 years. It aimed to identify characteristics of the Discourse that topicalised the gay liberation movement, considering specifically the linguistic means used in articulating on the one hand the need and the right to gay liberation, and on the other hand the public opposition to acknowledging gay rights. It invoked a social theory identified as ‘framing theory’ in analysing the different kinds of views, attitudes, social positions and arguments motivating for or agitating against the institution and protection of gay rights in post-apartheid South Africa. The project takes Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), particularly its applications in considering features and functions of media discourses, as its primary theoretical framework. First, following the insistence of the Discourse-historical approach put forward by Wodak (1990), it gives an overview of the social and historical context against which the recognition of gay rights in South Africa developed. It follows the analytic methodology suggested by van Dijk (1985) in considering issues of ‘language and power’, and the ways in which the access of elites to media attention is drawn on to support and give credence to particular ideologies. Supplementary to the application of CDA methods, an analytic approach from the fields of Social Movement Theory and Collective Action Framing is introduced to make sense of the discursive strategies implemented in the Discourse thematically tied to the South African gay liberation movement, particularly from the early 1980s up to 2006. This period was marked by the movement’s pursuit of social mobilization. Attention went to the ways in which arguments for and against gay rights were instantiated in the media using a variety of different frames. Such analysis could disclose the extent to which the "anti-apartheid" master frame was utilised by actors of the gay liberation movement. Based on their circulation demographics, two local South African weekly newspapers, City Press and Mail & Guardian, were screened in order to identify articles and letters to the editor relevant to the gay liberation discourse. The full complement of published items topicalising homosexuality directly and indirectly were collected as two corpora in order to assess the ways in which they contributed to public discourses of gay liberation. Two analytic exercises were done: first, the content of the full data-set was “tagged” and categorised according to the textual nature of the newspaper item, and the kinds of frames used in its presentation; second, a number of articles and letters were selected from the corpora for detailed analysis that would illustrate the use of the various strategies and frames found to characterise the Discourse. The first more quantitative analysis provided an overview of patterns, trends and editorial practices typically used in the media representations. The second more qualitative analysis provided insight into the finer details of media presention of ideas aimed at affecting the knowledge and attitudes of the intended and imagined readers. The findings of these analyses were presented in terms of quantifiable results as well as detailed descriptions. In broad strokes, the quantifiable findings showed that the Mail & Guardian corpus was significantly more outspoken in advocating for gay rights than the City Press corpus, and that both publications frequently framed homosexuality in terms of “tolerance”, “religion” and “rights”. The quantifiable findings also showed that in their discourses of gay tolerance and gay rights, both the City Press and the Mail & Guardian made significant use of frames typically and widely used by the media in the discourse of political change at the time. The detailed analyses investigated the textual reproduction of the authors’ ideologies, drawing attention to their regular reliance on certain types of arguments used for and against gay rights in the selected newspapers. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie proefskrif lewer verslag oor ‘n studie wat die toegepaste taalwetenskapterreine van diskoersanalise en kritiese diskoersanalise asook ‘n sosiolinguistiese terrein wat sedert onlangs “queer-taalwetenskap” genoem word, betrek. In die studie word daar ondersoek ingestel na die linguistiese konstruksie van gaymobilisering in Suid-Afrikaanse mediadiskoerse wat oor ‘n tydperk van bykans 30 jaar strek. Die doel van die studie was om eienskappe van die Diskoers wat die gaybevrydingsbeweging topikaliseer te identifiseer, met inagname van spesifiek die taalkundige middele gebruik tydens die artikulering van die behoefte aan en die reg tot gaybevryding aan die een kant en die openbare weerstand teen die erkenning van gayregte aan die ander kant. Die eerste, meer kwantitatiewe analise het ‘n oorsig gegee oor patrone, tendense en redaksionele praktyke wat tipies in die mediavoorstellings gebruik is. Die tweede, meer kwalitatiewe analise het insig gegee in die fyner besonderhede van mediavoorstelling van idees wat daarop gemik is om die kennis en gesindhede van die bedoelde en denkbeeldige lesers te affekteer. Die bevindinge van hierdie analises is in terme van kwantifiseerbare resultate asook gedetailleerde beskrywings aangebied. To achieve the goal of research is an analysis of academic text in advertising and propaganda. Science is considered as a differential emphasis of the use of advertisements in the construction and development projects announced in formats work of completion. The categories of analysis, Information, Persuasion and Seduction, used in the interpretation of the creation of the outdoor text are highlighted by Charaudeau. The itinerary of the research is done in three phases. The first phase is done by observing the creation of advertising copy in the academic environment. The second phase aims to produce scientific texts theorize in the first phase. The third phase has the goal of conclude the survey to be made final adjustments. At the end of the study, analysis of advertising text which shows academic inferences that contribute most to the construction and elaboration of an effective academic advertising text expressed in the language of the media through the categories of information, persuasion and seduction, within a perspective of the semiolinguistic theory of Charaudeau. / A partir do uso da Língua da Mídia empregada na elaboração de peças publicitárias, este projeto de pesquisa visa analisar o processo de criação de textos publicitários no ambiente acadêmico. Para atingir o objetivo da pesquisa, é feita uma análise do texto acadêmico na área da publicidade e propaganda. Como diferencial científico é considerado a ênfase do uso das peças publicitárias na construção e elaboração de projetos de comunicação em formatos de trabalhos de conclusão de curso. As categorias de análise, Informação, Persuasão e Sedução, utilizadas na interpretação do processo de criação do texto outdoor são as apontadas por Charaudeau. O itinerário da pesquisa é feito em três fases. A primeira fase é feita através da observação de criação dos textos publicitários no ambiente acadêmico. A segunda fase tem como meta a produção de textos científicos que teorizam a primeira fase. A terceira fase tem a meta de finalizar a pesquisa para que seja feito os ajustes finais. Ao final da pesquisa, a análise do texto publicitário acadêmico mostra quais as inferências que mais contribuem para a construção e elaboração de um texto acadêmico publicitário eficaz expresso na língua da mídia através das categorias de informação, persuasão e sedução, dentro de uma perspectiva da teoria semiolinguistica de Charaudeau.

Exploratory investigation into the practice of communicating to publics using English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) by Finnish companies

This thesis examines public relations (PR) communications that use English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) from leading Finnish companies. It analyses a corpus of 90 press releases from 15 export-active companies for linguistic usage, drawing on elements of linguistic theory. In addition, a limited narrative is based on personal interviews to determine typical procedures that are involved in PR content creation. It should have relevance to all who use ELF in a business context, but be of special interest to those involved with PR and marketing. It may also have some relevance to internal international business communications and linguistics.The study was motivated by three factors: how English is a dominant global language that is being used by companies in other countries as an intermediary language, prior research of how Finnish companies use PR and communications within their export activities, and extensive observation obtained whilst working as a journalist, dealing with companies from all around the world.It is believed that many companies may not be communicating efficiently and effectively when using ELF. Even when they do communicate and content may appear to be grammatically correct, its efficacy may be muted, inhibiting audience comprehension and other consequential actions. The research noted that certain linguistic elements were over-represented, which could potentially inhibit communication and comprehension. The resolution is not necessarily drastic and could only deliver wider benefits where implemented.Recommendations include closer attention is made concerning linguistic construction, broader additional research is conducted into the global phenomena and the possible creation of an operational framework to assist deployment of ELF-friendly textual communications, especially within the PR/marketing field.

Jogo lógico e a gramática do rádio: analítica de um jogo de linguagem comunicacional e seus diferendos

O presente trabalho visa entender como o rádio se distingue dos demais sons do mundo. A hipótese aqui formulada é a de que o rádio, em sua definição, é uma linguagem, e não um aparelho. Dessa maneira, há a busca por uma caracterização da linguagem radiofônica seguindo as ideias implicadas em uma Estética da Linguagem (Derrida e antiessencialistas como Ziff, Weitz e Kennick). Com isso, há um estudo detalhado do rádio em seu jogo de linguagem (Wittgenstein) e em seus diferendos (Lyotard), considerados aqui enquanto parergon e ergon, ou seja, enquanto recorte e modelo operacional da linguagem em sua intersecção com o mundo. Para a investigação do jogo de linguagem, foram utilizados conteúdos relacionados à Filosofia Analítica, à Lógica Algébrica e à Teoria dos Jogos para desenvolver um método analítico denonimado Jogo Lógico, voltado para o estudo de jogos de linguagem comunicacionais. Já para a investigação dos diferendos, foram utilizadas as ideias pragmáticas acerca da performatividade e da lógica ilocucionária (Austin e Searle) para analisar os gêneros radiofônicos (a saber: musical, radiojornalismo, esportivo, variedades [talk radio], humorístico, ficção e publicidade). Essas duas investigações formam aquilo que é chamado aqui de Gramática do Rádio - considerando o conceito wittgensteiniano de gramática -, o ponto nodal que nos permite caracterizar o rádio enquanto linguagem. / The present work aims to understand how the radio distinguishes itself from other sounds of the world. The hypothesis formulated here is that the radio, in its definition, is a language, not a machine. Thus, there is the search for a characterization of radio\'s language following the ideas involved in an Aesthetics of Language (Derrida and anti-essentialists like Ziff, Weitz and Kennick). Here, there is a detailed study of the radio in its language-game (Wittgenstein) and their differends (Lyotard), considered in this work as parergon and ergon, i.e. as the cut and the operational model of language in its intersection with the world. For the investigation of the language-game, we used content related to Analytic Philosophy, to Algebraic Logic, and to Game Theory to develop an analytical method called Logic Game, dedicated to the communicative language-games\' study. As for the investigation of differends, we used the pragmatic concepts about the performative and illocutionary logic (Searle and Austin) to analyze the radio genres (ie: music, radio journalism, sports, talk radio, humor, fiction and advertising). These two studies form what is called here the Radio Grammar - considering the Wittgensteinian concept of grammar - the key point that allows us to characterize the radio as a language.
