No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 1170808 bytes, checksum: 7b299ea2ca71a584be9ecd4dbd10364c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is defined as the presence of continuing or recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort and it is associated with altered bowel habit. Its pathophysiology involves the following aspects: genetic variables, changes in gut motility and visceral sensitivity, psychosocial factors, in addition to inflammatory and infectious processes. The treatment is based on dietary guidance and change in lifestyle. The use of drugs is indicated in symptomatic stages of IBS. The growing interest of patients for complementary and alternative medicine has been observed in recent years. Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer has been used for centuries in oriental medicine. Experimental studies have demonstrated the antinociceptive action of this herbal medicine on calcium and sodium channels, as well as on primary sensory neurons. The study aimed to: conduct phase II clinical trial with Panax ginseng CA Meyer in patients with IBS; contribute to the study of the pharmacological effects of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer; evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer in abdominal pain control in patients with IBS; and observe the adverse effects. Twenty-six patients were selected by means of the inclusion criteria for the study and they were divided into two groups. A clinical double-blind, randomized, prospective and experimental trial was conducted for eight weeks, comparing the action of dry extract of Panax ginseng (300 mg / day) with trimebutine (600 mg / day). Abdominal pain was assessed using the Likert scale. Patients were assessed at four visits and the results were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and Friedman tests, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Twenty- four patients completed the study, being 87.50% female and mean age of 47.41 years. There was a relative homogeneity among patients with regard to sex, age and duration of symptoms. All patients, before beginning treatment with Panax ginseng and trimebutine, had negative scores for the Likert scale values. There was improvement in abdominal pain, through this scale, in patients who used Panax ginseng. This group started from a median basal of -5 to 2.5, 3 and 5 in the 1st, 4th and 8th weeks of treatment, respectively, with a statistically significant difference. Similar results were achieved in the group that used the trimebutine. The only adverse effect observed was the occurrence of headache in two patients (16.66%) in the group that used the herbal. Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer was effective in the control of abdominal pain in IBS patients, analogous to trimebutine, and may be used in future studies, with the prospect of a phase III clinical trial. O Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer; avaliar a eficácia terapêutica do Panax ginseng C.A. O Panax ginseng C.A.

När X blir Y : En genusanalys om hur könsroller i Stephenie Meyers roman Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined gestaltas genom genderswap. / When X becomes Y : A gender analysis of how gender roles in Stephenie Meyer's novel Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined is portrayed through genderswap.

Droguett Gonzalez, Ann-Kristin January 2019 (has links)
Denna uppsats ämnar att analysera genderswap tekniken i Stephenie Meyers bok Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined ur ett genusperspektiv.

Vampires - “Culture’s Sexy Drug of Choice” and “Dangerous Warnings” : A comparison of the depiction of vampires in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight and Bram Stoker’s Dracula connected to genre, narration, and readership.

Fredriksson, Frida January 2016 (has links)
This essay discusses the differences in depiction of vampires between Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight (2005) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). By using examples from the novels, the essay exemplifies how genre, narration, and readership affect the description of vampires within the two novels. The essay bases its discussion on genre on the premise that the vampire genre is in fact a genre to itself, but one with a broad variation. Furthermore, the essay briefly discusses the shift within the vampire genre, where vampires during the last centuries have gone from dangerous and scary to appealing and romantic. A connection is made between the shift within the vampire genre and Anne Rice’s vampire fiction. The discussion on genre shows how the romance, fantasy, and horror genres affect the depiction of vampires.

"Is That What You Dream About? Being a Monster?": Bella Swan and the Construction of the Monstrous-Feminine in The Twilight Saga

Firestone, Amanda Jayne 13 June 2014 (has links)
ABSTRACT This dissertation argues that Bella Swan is a representation of Barbara Creed's monstrous-feminine which serves to reinforce ideologies that insist women are abject, inherently dangerous to men, and threatening to a patriarchal status quo. Through close-textual analysis of The Twilight Saga, I demonstrate how the monstrous-feminine frames the hysterical teenage body, hypersexuality, and eternal motherhood as simultaneously unacceptable and unavoidable. These negative women's stereotypes continue to persist in dominant popular culture, and this doublebind is overcome only by the impossible perfection of vampirism. The monstrous-feminine invites constructions of teenage bodies as unstable and unreliable, women's sexuality as dangerous and impure, and motherhood as a requirement for a complete identity. These constructions are particularly dangerous in Young Adult literature and particularly inspirational in fanfiction.

Making Gender Visible : Breaking down the narration in Stephanie Meyer's Breaking Dawn

Arvidsson, Josefine January 2010 (has links)

This essay analyzes the difference between feminine and masculine narration in Stephanie Meyer's final novel in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. The methods used are Narratology, Reader-Response Criticism and Gender Theory. Breaking Dawn is divided into three different books and one of the main characters, Bella, is the narrator in the first and the last book, and the other main character, Jacob, is the narrator in the second book. Bella's and Jacob's narration styles are manifested in the title names and inside the text, and the analysis shows why Bella is a stereotypically female narrator and why Jacob is a stereotypically masculine narrator.

Evaluation of DNA Quality of Beer Ingredients

Ramberg, Anna January 2006 (has links)

The project aim is to determine if good quality DNA can be extracted from barley, malt and hop, ingredients used in beer brewing. Good quality DNA is important in DNA fingerprinting techniques which can be used for identification of ingredients. The 3 methods tested are the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) method, QIAGEN DNeasy Plant Mini Kit and Meyer’s method as published in 1996 with QIAGEN DNeasy Plant Mini Kit in combination. To evaluate the DNA quality after extraction we used 3 different techniques:

(i) spectrophotometry to estimate purity by using the ratio A260/A280; (ii) agarose gel electrophoresis after DNA extraction to determine the success of the extraction and evaluate the amount of high molecular weight DNA and degradation; and (iii) the polymerase chain reaction with 4 different primer pairs, together with agarose gel electrophoresis, to determine if the extracted DNA could be used in downstream applications, see the effect of inhibitors and estimate the fragmentisation of the DNA. The results achieved using the above mentioned methods were then used to evaluate the success of each of the extraction methods in their function of extracting high quality DNA from barley, malt and hop as well as determining whether the treatment of the ingredients has an effect on the DNA quality.

It's Real For Us: The Literariness of Fanfiction and Its Use As Corrective Fiction

Monroe, Lauren W 06 August 2013 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is how fanfiction, an underground subculture of web literature written about popular books, films, television shows, and comics, treats the original works it derives from. In this study I will examine the ways in which fans reshape the original stories of the works they write about, and the ways in which they do not, and speculate the reasons they have chosen to do so. This project examines fanfiction surrounding three young adult novels: Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Harry Potter. I examine each of these works and their respective fanfiction in order to highlight important themes in each work and problems inherent in each story to account for the changes fanfiction writers make in their literature. I have chosen one overarching theme in the fanfiction in each fandom and will explore why fanfiction authors have overwhelmingly chosen to change the source material to suit that theme.
