The role of microfinance in Sekhukhune District

Sampa, Regina Bwalya 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the role of microfinance in the Sekhukhune District, Limpopo Province. The Hulme’s Impact Framework and the Capabilities Approach were used to understand the role of microfinance. A qualitative approach was used to gain an insight into the perspective of both the beneficiaries and the providers of microfinance. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect in-depth data from 30 participants from two developmental Microfinance Institutions operating in the Sekhukhune District. The results showed that Microfinance offered a variety of services, such as savings, small loans as well as business and health education, mainly to women who were interested in doing business. Loan eligibility for the institutions depended on both the ability to pay back and to save. Failure to pay back resulted in being excluded from the programme. Although loans were meant for business purpose, some clients found a way to use them for income smoothening and loan repayment. Overall, the results indicate that microfinance was used to supplement other government poverty-eradication tools such as monthly grants to the elderly and children. Moreover, microfinance is perceived by both beneficiaries and providers to bring about both economic and social capabilities. It was also revealed that, even though microfinance has some benefits, there are still some challenges faced in the industry. Beneficiaries perceived the interest rate to be satisfactory microfinance. However, the interest rates charged by the Microfinance Institutions is higher than what is charged by commercial banks. In the quest to cover operational costs, such interest rates that have left some of the poor in an unending cycle of poverty. Based on the findings, this study recommends that, the government should come up with other intervention strategies in addition to supplement microfinance. For instance, to help micro-entrepreneurs, the government could assist by building smaller shops to rent out to micro-entrepreneurs they could sell their goods. In addition, the government should build financial systems that work for the poor; create legal systems which that encourage market entry. / Economics / M. Com. (Economics)

Strategické řízení v malých podnicích v oblasti služeb / The strategic management in small enterprises in the field of services

MAŘÍKOVÁ, Monika January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation was to specify and define the strategic management in small enterprises in the field of services. Based on the information gathered, determine the level of strategic management in small service enterprises and propose a general model of strategic management for them. The questionnaire survey method, accompanied by semi-structured interviews with representatives of the company management, statistical methods and contextual analysis were used to meet the target. In order to determine the level of strategic management, a composite indicator of the strategic management implementation level was created based on selected strategic management characteristics (LSM) identified on the basis of literature studies. Based on the points earned, enterprises were divided into three groups, namely: strategically managed, partially strategic, and strategically not managed enterprises. Further, the LSM indicator was determined in relation to the legal form of business, the business focus (scope) and the size of the enterprise (number of employees). Research results show that the level of strategic management in the enterprise depends on the size of the enterprise (the number of employees) and on the contrary doesn't depend on business activity and the legal form of business. Added value to the created model is proposed "checklist", which serves entrepreneurs as a simple guide in implementing strategic management.

From this paper it was possible to recognize the media inter-relationships in the context of information management by analyzing the steps of identifying, prospecting, selection, value addition, storage, dissemination and feedback system. This study aimed to verify whether microenterprises carry out the strategic management of information available on virtual social media to get competitive advantage. The theoretical basis was provided by large areas of management and social communication embracing respectively the entrepreneurs, marketing, strategic information management and virtual social medias. Another related field of knowledge, Information Science, also brought contributions to the study. This was an exploratory research, since there is no indication in Brazilian literature from the perspective of the research undertaken. From a quantitative analysis, a structured survey was developed with open and closed questions which were then examined according to the literature review carried out. The constituents of this study consists of eighteen (18) microenterprises which are participants in PROINE (Programa de Incubação da Universidade Federal de Goiás – a business incubation program), and fifteen ( 15 ) respondents showed outstanding results indicating that 44 % of respondents use social media as a virtual source of information, also 73 % use the information from these media for professional purposes and 100 % of them consider important the use of virtual social media to assist them in making decisions regarding the management of their companies. However 38 % use it sporadically and 31 % claim that in general, the information helps. In addition, It was observed that there is no specific use of any strategic information management softwares. It was identified that respondents do not have a systematic or selection tool to track and store this information, leaving it only for personal knowledge. This research also suggested the importance given by microenterprises that have insightful administrators who are willing to carry out an administrative and strategic communication management and use the information derived from virtual social media in order to have some form of competitive advantage. It was found, however, strong systems-theoretic entanglement of the treated areas in order to provide scientific, technological and innovative in dealing with the information to generate competitive advances. Therefore, It has been established a solid systems-theoretic entanglement of the treated areas with the aim to provide scientific, technological and innovative advances in the treatment of information to generate competitiveness.

Microfinance and the environmental bottom line

Allet, Marion 21 February 2013 (has links)
Microfinance has strongly developed over the past decades on the promise of reaching a double bottom line of financial viability and social impact. Recently, some actors have started to advocate that microfinance, to be truly responsible, should include a third environmental objective as well. However, little scientific knowledge exists today on environmental management within microfinance institutions (MFIs). The objective of this PhD thesis is to shed light on how MFIs manage their environmental bottom line. More specifically, we identify the strategies adopted by MFIs to improve their environmental bottom line, we propose a new framework to assess the environmental performance of MFIs, and we analyze their motives for going green, the characteristics of MFIs involved in environmental management, and the challenges that they face when implementing environmental programs./La microfinance s’est fortement développée ces dernières années sur la base d’une double promesse :celle d’atteindre une viabilité financière tout en ayant un impact social.
