RED COATS AND WILD BIRDS: MILITARY CULTURE AND ORNITHOLOGY ACROSS THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRITISH EMPIRE

GREER, KIRSTEN ALETTA 02 September 2011 (has links)
“Red coats and wild birds: military culture and ornithology across the nineteenth-century British Empire” investigates the intersections between British military culture and the practices and ideas of ornithology, with a particular focus on the British Mediterranean. Considering that British officers often occupied several imperial sites over the course of their military careers, to what extent did their movements shape their ornithological knowledge and identities at “home” and abroad? How did British military naturalists perceive different local cultures (with different attitudes to hunting, birds, field science, etc.) and different local natures (different sets of birds and environments)? How can trans-imperial careers be written using not only textual sources (for example, biographies and personal correspondence) but also traces of material culture? In answering these questions, I centre my work on the Mediterranean region as a “colonial sea” in the production of hybrid identities and cultural practices, and the mingling of people, ideas, commodities, and migratory birds. I focus on the life geographies of four military officers: Thomas Wright Blakiston, Andrew Leith Adams, L. Howard Lloyd Irby, and Philip Savile Grey Reid. By the mid-nineteenth century, the Mediterranean region emerged as a crucial site for the security of the British “empire route” to India and South Asia, especially with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Military stations served as trans-imperial sites, connecting Britain to India through the flow of military manpower, commodities, information, and bodily experiences across the empire. By using a “critical historical geopolitics of empire” to examine the material remnants of the “avian imperial archive,” I demonstrate how the practices and performances of British military field ornithology helped to: materialize the British Mediterranean as a moral “semi-tropical” place for the physical and cultural acclimatization of British officers en route to and from India; reinforce imperial presence in the region; and make “visible in new ways” the connectivity of North Africa to Europe through the geographical distribution of birds. I also highlight the ways in which the production of ornithological knowledge by army officers was entwined with forms of temperate martial masculinity. / Thesis (Ph.D, Geography) -- Queen's University, 2011-09-02 09:17:17.931

Idealised redesign : the South African Military Academy by the year 2030

Fokkens, Andries Marius 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / The changing external environment of the security sector and higher education influences the South African Military Academy (SAMA) as an institution within the broader Department of Defence, which is also associated with Stellenbosch University (SU) through the SAMA’s Faculty of Military Science (FMS). Graduates of the SAMA operate mostly within this changing security environment where their abilities and competencies are required. The research problem investigates the triggers that will initiate change and the drivers that will bring about paradigm shifts on the SAMA as an institution that delivers graduates for a changing security environment. The research question is to forecast an ideal SAMA in the year 2030. This ideal comes forth from critical analyses of current literature and qualitative data collected from experts through the Delphi technique. Sub-questions of the research question includes the programme content of the academic and military training programmes, the profile of the academic and administrative personnel, the student profile upon entering and exiting the SAMA, the organisational structure required, the infrastructure and finally the financial model. Furthermore, triggers and drivers identify actions to bring about change and critical success factors determine the requirements to achieve an ideal SAMA in 2030. The SAMA is a unique military unit that houses the only Faculty of Military Science in Southern Africa. The research report will empower decision-makers in the DOD and SU, including the unit members of the SAMA, to identify the triggers that will precipitate a coming change and properly manage the drivers pressuring change from the perspective of functionality, politics and society.

Aid as a Path on the Muddled Road Toward Democratization? : A quantitative multiple case study on the impact of aid on the democratization process in Sub Saharan Africa

Buhlin, Sofia January 2009 (has links)

This thesis deals with the problematic question of aid as a helping hand to states that are in the process of developing democracy. It focuses on the Sub Saharan African region as a critical case, and furthermore upon the aid contributions made by the European Union during the time period of 1996-2006. The main ambition is to explore the real effect of aid on the democratic process, but also to explore other variables that might have effect. The method used is regression analysing of a database called The Quality of Government database Cross – Section Time-Series May 2008. The database has later been modified to suit my specific needs and aid has been recoded. This thesis is meant to be a theory testing study, and the theories tested will be related to the independent variables such as aid as a democratic helping hand as well as theories of corruption, political participation and military rule in the search for democracy.

La mort des grands officiers militaires français, du règne de Charles V à la fin de l’Ancien Régime : réalités macabres et représentations corporelles / French high officers’ death, from the reign of Charles V to the end of the "Ancien Régime" : macabre facts and corporal representations

Gilet, Myriam 11 December 2010 (has links)
The deaths of constables, Admirals and Marshals of France, whether renowned or long forgotten, were abundantly written about in the Ancien Régime. They nourished reflection of their contemporaries who paid attention to the appearance of their bodies wounded at war, murdered or stamped by disease and old age, and to how their corpses were disposed of. Through deadly violence some of them were the target of, post-mortem breaches to their bodily integrity (actions aiming at destroying or preserving their bodies) and through corpse’s handling, these remarkable deaths illustrate the special and ambiguous relationship these representatives of the Crown and military chiefs of the nobility had with the Sovereign Power, caught between their duty and the defence of their identity and rights. They shed light on the story of a turbulent submission of the military elite and the nobility to the monarchical centralization in France and the higher Reason of the State from the end of the Middle Ages to the end of Modern Times. The stakes of these deaths, the discourses and imaginaries that stamped their remembrance and their bodies are examined to the light of the corpse’s treatment, whether known or idealized, of nobiliary values, and of practices and representations of war and power.

Santos, Thiago Dias 01 July 2011 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao completa de Thiago Dias bloqueado.pdf: 1982337 bytes, checksum: ac72cb12412bdf69b440df2515085143 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-07-01 / The respective work has as prism to analyze a series of testimonies given by military officers who participated in the political events in Brazil that culminated on the 31st of March of 1964. The deponents had a relevant role during the 21 years of the military government. The goal of the analysis concentrates on notes that exhibit throughout the testimonies, the resentments that the men in uniform exposed in their words. Resentments intensified mostly in the anticommunism and in the bad reputation the military forces had before the society after the end of the regime. The work is structured in showing how it began in the Brazilian army the role of an institution that was supposed to practice a direct political participation in the country, besides seeing itself like the source of moral reserve of the nation and guardian of the precepts of patriotism and nationalism. Being this done to demonstrate that the intervention which occurred in 1964 was not a result of an immediacy or by foreign orders in collusion with the national capital, where the soldiers would be mere playthings. The intervention needs to be analyzed from an optics that realizes the motives and intentions that made the military forces deprive the president John Goulart from the power. Among the testimonies it will also be analyzed the question of the military officers memory regarding subjects directly connected to the period: the reason of the destitution of João Goulart, the repression to the opponents, the question of torture and other recurrent subjects to the analyzed period. Among the testimonies it will also be analyzed the question of the memory of the military officers regarding subjects directly connected to the period: the reason of deposing João Goulart, the repression to the opponents, the question of torture and other recurrent subjects to the analyzed period. The conclusion of the work will be originated from a direct analysis of the testimonies where it is exposed in an explicit or implicit way, the resentments of the military officers regarding the occurrences before and after the events of the 31st of March of 1964 / O respectivo trabalho tem como prisma analisar uma série de depoimentos dados por militares que participaram dos acontecimentos políticos no Brasil, que culminaram no 31 de março de 1964.

Career maturity across career stages in the South African military

Themba, Mfaniselwa Abednigo 03 1900 (has links)
The present study explores career maturity across career stages in the South African military. The Career Development Questionnaire (CDQ) and a biographical questionnaire were administered to a sample of South African military officers (n = 333). The data were statistically analysed for significant mean differences in career maturity according to demographic and military-specific variables. The results revealed an adequate level of career maturity among the participants. The participants’ overall mean scores in career maturity showed no significant mean differences according to demographic variables. Significant mean differences were, however, observed for the sample according to their arm of service in the South African military. Whilst the results did not indicate a developmental progression of career maturity among the participants, it did reflect the equivocal nature of previous career maturity research. Conclusions for the study are made, limitations are discussed, and recommendations are provided for practice and future research. / Industrial and Organizational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial and Organizational Psychology)

The Influence of Studying Motivation on Self-efficacy and Work Performance for Military Officers

Fang, Hsueh Ling Unknown Date (has links)
關鍵字:國軍人員、在職進修、進修動機、自我效能、工作績效 / The purpose of this research is to probe the relationship among learning motivation, self-efficiency and job performance for military officers who participate in the in-service learning program of master degree or related credit class. Based on the literature review and theoretical inference, this research argues that learning motives of participant will influence learning self- efficiency and, further more, his or her job performance. Accordingly, this research proposes and tests five hypotheses by way of field data. The research methodology is mainly the survey approach and the design of questionnaire is according to the research framework based on the literature and hypotheses. By convenience sampling approach, 200 questionnaire mails were sent to the military officers in northern part of Taiwan and 151 effective questionnaires were received with the valid response rate of 79.50%. The result shows that the learning motivation of program participant has significant impact on self-efficiency and job performance. Among these motivations, the higher of ‘pursuing achievements’, ‘growing recognition’, ‘professional development’, ‘social relationship’, and ‘external expectation’, the higher of self-efficiency and the better of job performance. Furthermore, the study also finds that the learning motivations are multifaceted and correlated with each other. At present, it is rare to study the relationships among learning motivation, self-efficiency, and job performance about military officers. The result of this study, therefore, offers a meaningful mirror for military department to consider the improvement of life-learning program. In addition, this study makes a great contribution in terms of the theories about learning motivation and self-efficiency. Key word: military officers, in-service learning, learning motivation, self-efficacy, job performance
