The representation of God in three thirteenth-century Spanish narrative poems

Spinks, Scott Franklin 11 November 2013 (has links)
Mentions of God were omnipresent in the early vernacular texts of thirteenth-century Spain. In this dissertation, I study the mentions of God in three well-known Spanish narrative poems written down in the thirteenth century. These are the Cantar de mio Cid, the Libro de Alexandre, and the Milagros de Nuestra Señora. In particular, I discuss how the representation of God in these works is shaped by each of the three poets' original intended audiences and the message that he wished to communicate to those listeners. I begin by reviewing critical reconstructions of the original intended audiences of the three poems. I then study three aspects of the representation of God in each of the three poems: the words used to reference God, the descriptions of the deity present in the texts themselves, and the roles and functions assigned to God as a character in each narrative. I conclude that the Judeo-Christian God was an expected element in early Spanish narrative poetry, but that his representation could vary widely based on the differing compositions of the audiences for whom the works were conceived. / text

First Mio-Pliocene Salamander Fossil Assemblage From the Southern Appalachians

Boardman, Grant S., Schubert, Blaine W. 06 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The Gray Fossil Site (GFS) of northeastern Tennessee has yielded a diverse salamander fossil assemblage for the southern Appalachian Mio-Pliocene. This assemblage includes at least five taxa (Ambsytoma sp.; Plethodon sp., Spelerpinae, gen. et sp. indet., Desmognathus sp.; and Notophthalmus sp.) from three families (Ambystomatidae, Plethodontidae, and Salamandridae, respectively). All taxa are present in the area today and support a woodland-pond interpretation of the site. Reported specimens represent the earliest record of their families in the Appalachian Mountains (and the earliest record of Plethodontidae and Ambystomatidae east of the Mississippi River); with the Notophthalmus sp. vertebrae being the only Mio-Pliocene body fossil known for the Salamandridae in North America. The Desmognathus sp. specimens may help shed light on the evolutionary origins of the genus Desmognathus, which purportedly has its roots in this region during the Mio-Pliocene.

Riva, Fernando 25 September 2017 (has links)
This paper, inserted in the framework of the Cid studies, aims to identify the existence of a strong presence of the cult to the Virgin Mary in the Poema de Mio Cid (PMC), which articulates the battle scenes of the poem and is presented as a projection of Castile’s expansionist intentions in the context of the wars of Spanish reconquest. Likewise, it seeks to demonstrate the strong French influence in the Marian cult, which can be seen throughout the text, and its adoption by the religious Peninsula, particularly in relation to the ideology of crusade that matches the changing notion of reconquest and constitutes one of the main motives of the poem.

At the same time, it is incontrovertible that the competitiveness is essential to the inclusion of Brazilian companies in markets more and more globalized. In that context, the interest in entrepreneurship grows. Entrepreneurial competences take the lead role. The aim of this study is to identify how such entrepreneurial competences take part in the history of the life of the agents of the winning companies of the 2006 and 2007 Corporate TOP Awards and what made them successful people. This research has, as basis, the taxonomy presented by Vergara (2006): as far as to the ends, exploratory and descriptive and, to the means, bibliographic, documental, and multiple cases studies. The data were gathered through a semi-structured questionnaire and sent to the awarded people, after they were personally contacted. The treatment and the data analysis were developed through the Method of Content Analysis, mixed categorical analysis where they were defined, a priori, based on the theory of Man and Lau (2000). The sample of the first study, related to the winners of the 2006 Corporate TOP Award, had five out of six entrepreneurs; and, the sample of the second study, related to the winners of the 2007 Corporate TOP Award, had six out of eight. Seven entrepreneurial competences area stood out in the study. The results show that three of the seven competences area considered relevant and common: Conceptual Competence, Strategic Competence and Support Competence; and, they represent 58.77% of the related frequency, emphasizing the first and the second ones that stand for 24.85% of the total. It can be inferred that there is a relation between the entrepreneurship s success and the inherent competences of the entrepreneurs, such as independence and self-assurance, persistence, pride and self-esteem, creativity, innovation, intuition, taking moderate risks, perfectionism, and calling. The recognition of market opportunities is the key to the development of the activities where the derivation of occupation is the starting point. The major emphasis of its project is related to the obsessive search for quality and sustainability, aiming to the constant satisfaction of its clients. They are innovative in the Schumpeterian style, in the way that they don t necessarily associate innovation with scientific knowledge. They prospered once they had created in the market a new business strategy, as they have a high intelligence level for success.

Myo-inositol phosphate synthase (MIPS1) (E.C.5.5.1.4) catalyzes the irreversible conversion of D-Glucose-6-P to 1-L-myo-inositol-1-P. Myo-inositol plays an important role in plant metabolism, providing inositides and inositol for essential metabolic processes in the formation of the vegetative and reproductive plant body. Among the pathways in which the myo-inositol is closely involved, some are target of plant breeding, such as genetic manipulation of phytic acid and oligosaccharides contents in seeds and structural sugars in the cell wall. To date, MIPS silenced plants have not been characterized in detail, especially in their vegetative structures. Thus, the present study aimed to characterize tomato 'Moneymaker' with different levels of silencing MIPS1. For induction of gene silencing was used transformation via Agrobacterium tumefaciens containing the plasmid pCambia with construct intron-hairpin-RNA type whith MIPS gene fragments of Glycine max (ΔGmMIPS) under control of the CaMV 35S. The effect of MIPS1 silencing in primary transgenic plants T0 and T1 and T2 progenies was evaluated for the development of fruit and seeds, phytic acid and sugar contents, photosynthetic pigments, physiological responses by evaluating gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, oxidative stress enzyme activity, metabolic profile characterization and cell wall constituents. The results showed the efficiency of the transgenic construct to induce silencing. The silencing resulted in reduction of phytic acid content in seeds, reducing the amount of seeds and a reduction in fruit development, reduction in germination and seedling development stemmed from normal seeds in T0 and T1 progeny. The silencing also induced changes in the content of sugars in leaves and seeds in T0 and T1 progeny and reduced firmness of the epidermis and pericarp in fruits of T1 progeny. This decrease in firmness may be related to the composition or structure of cell walls, but no reductions were identified in the content of sugars and cellulose in cell wall pericarp and leaves of T2 plants, but accumulation of uronic acids, both in pericarp as sheets. In relation to the photosynthetic apparatus, silencing caused no changes. The content of photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange parameters and chlorophyll fluorescence were similar to those presented by the non- transformed plants, Further evidence that silencing of MIPS does not cause disturbances in the vegetative body was the activity of enzymes of the oxidative stress that in optimal conditions, showed no differences. However, the changes found in the vegetative body had close involvement with the metabolism of inositol, as content of sugars (glucose- 6P, glucose and sucrose) in times of intense photosynthetic activity. The metabolomics allowed a more integrative analysis in which there is an evident reduction of some amino acids, accumulation of sugars and sugar alcohols reduction, all closely related to the metabolism of inositol sheets. In fruits, there was more significant influence of MIPS, with changes in all four ages evaluated (10, 15, 50 and 60 days after anthesis), both when the seed pericarp. The largest number of changes were found in the seeds, characterized by the reduction of the content of amino acids, intermediates of the citric acid cycle (TCA), organic acids and sugar alcohols. Sugars, in turn, showed varied behavior depending on their relationship with the metabolism of inositol, where fructose and trehalose accumulation feature, while glucose and sucrose have more varied pattern as a result of being involved in a more complex regulatory network. In pericarp, the metabolic profile was respondent variations in development, but with alterations in sugar content. With this study we can see that the construction type intron hairpin fragment of MIPS Glycine max (ΔGmMIPS) gene under control of the CaMV 35S promoter, causes silencing in tomato plants were silenced and content of metabolites influenced the content of myo-inositol or altered expression of MIPS, both in vegetative and in reproductive part. Join also the silencing of MIPS was not able to change the photosynthetic activity or directly or indirectly cause oxidative stress in the vegetative body MIPS-silenced plants.

A Dental Microwear Texture Analysis of the Mio-Pliocene Hyaenids From Langebaanweg, South African

Stynder, Deano D., Ungar, Peter S., Scott, Jessica R., Schubert, Blaine W. 01 September 2012 (has links)
Hyaenids reached their peak diversity during the Mio-Pliocene, when an array of carnivorous species emerged alongside dwindling civet-like and mongoose-like insectivorous/omnivorous taxa. Significantly, bone-cracking morphological adaptations were poorly developed in these newly-emerged species. This, their general canid-like morphology, and the absence/rarity of canids in Eurasia and Africa at the time, has led researchers to hypothesise that these carnivorous Mio-Pliocene hyaenas were ecological vicars to modern canids. To shed further light on their diets and foraging strategies, we examine and compare the dental microwear textures of Hyaenictitherium namaquensis, Ikelohyaena abronia, Chasmaporthetes australis, and Hyaenictis hendeyi from the South African Mio-Pliocene site of Langebaanweg with those of the extant feliforms Crocuta crocuta, Acinonyx jubatus, and Panthera leo (caniforms are not included because homologous wear facets are not directly comparable between the suborders). Sample sizes for individual fossil species are small, which limits confidence in assessments of variation between the extinct taxa; however, these Mio-Pliocene hyaenas exhibit surface complexity and textural fill volume values that are considerably lower than those exhibited by the living hyaena, Crocuta crocuta. Dental microwear texture analysis thus supports interpretations of craniodental evidence suggesting low bone consumption in carnivorous Mio-Pliocene hyaenas.

Salamanders of the Mio-Pliocene Gray Fossil Site, Washington County, Tennessee.

Boardman, Grant Stanley 09 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Screening efforts at the Gray Fossil Site, Washington County, Tennessee, have yielded a unique and diverse salamander fauna for the southern Appalachian Mio-Pliocene; including at least five taxa from three modern families (Ambystomatidae, Plethodontidae, and Salamandridae) supporting the woodland-pond interpretation of the site. All specimens represent the earliest record of their respective families in the Appalachian Mountains; with the Notophthalmus sp. vertebrae being the only Mio-Pliocene skeletal fossil known for the family Salamandridae in North America. Three types of plethodontid salamander are present, with one type representing the earliest known desmognathine. The desmognathine fossils lend credence to the 'Appalachian' origin of the clade in the Mio-Pliocene. The GFS salamander fauna is predominated by plethodontids; competition is inferred by the presence of several similarly large-sized taxa and is invoked to explain the presence of neotenic individuals in an otherwise amicable terrestrial environment.
