Biodiversity assessment of tetranychid mites in Kenya and the conservation hotspots of Tanzania / Faith Jebet Toroitich.

Toroitich, Faith Jebet January 2011 (has links)
The aims of this study were to develop a detailed record of the tetranychid mites of Kenya and Tanzania, to assess the diversity of tetranychid mites in the east African biodiversity hotspots and to determine female characters that can be used to identify the species of the economically important Tetranychus species found in these countries. The genetic diversity of the most abundant Tetranychus species (Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard) was also assessed. The Tetranychidae (Acari) contain some of the most important pest species of phytophagous mites worldwide. Out of the almost 1,300 species in this family, 256 species are known to occur in Africa. Before this study, ten species had been reported from Kenya and only three in Tanzania. The genus Tetranychus to which most of the pest species belongs to, can only be identified to species level by the use of the male aedeagus that is often difficult to visualize. The natural habitat, the Eastern Arc Mountains and East African Coastal Forests in Kenya and Tanzania is recognized as biodiversity hotspots but prior to his study, information on Tetranychidae in these hotspots was lacking. Thus, no information on the natural mite fauna composition was available. In Kenya, 18 tetranychid mite species from various plant hosts have been recorded. Four of these species belong to the subfamily Bryobiinae and the other 14 to the subfamily Tetranychinae. Eight of the mite species identified belong to the genera Bryobia, Petrobia, Peltanobia, Paraplonobia, Duplanychus, Eutetranychus and Mixonychus and are being reported for the first time in Kenya while the other ten had already been reported before. For Tanzania, six species belonging to the genera Tetranychus, Eutetranychus and Mixonychus are being reported for the first time from Tanzania and other three had been reported before. A list of these species, their brief descriptions as well as a key for identification is provided. A redescription of Peltanobia erasmusi including previously undescribed male characters is given. Schizotetranychus kwalensis sp. nov. from Kenya and Brevinychus meshacki from Tanzania were collected on Omorcarpum kirkii (Fabaceae) from Matuga, Kwale district, Kenya and Philonoptera eriocalyx (Fabaceae) from Sangasanga, Mvomero district, Tanzania respectively and described. Revised keys of Brevinychus and of the African species of Schizotetranychus are also provided. Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard ranked highest in abundance amongst all the tetranychid mites collected. It was found in four out of five fragments of the hotspot, and it survives in a wide range of altitudes from as low as 123 m to 1655 m. Molecular examination of T. evansi collected from Kenya and Tanzania and on different host plants revealed an identical DNA sequence of the mitochondrial COI fragment and 19 identical microsatellite alleles suggesting a single introduction of this species to this part of East Africa. Female characters of four Tetranychus species found in Kenya were explored using the scanning electron microscope. Differences in the distances between the duplex setae of species belonging to the desertorum group (Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard and Tetranychus ludeni Zacher) and those grouped by Flechtmann and Knihinicki (2002) under group 9 (Tetranychus neocaledonicus Andre and Tetranychus urticae Koch) were observed. The dorsal striae of T. evansi, T. neocaledonicus and T. urticae have semicircular lobes whereas those on the dorsal striae of T. ludeni are triangular. / Thesis (PhD (Environmental Sciences))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

The spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is considered one of the main pests of fruit in Brazil, among them, the Carica papaya culture has been heavily damaged by this arthropod. In papaya production are numerous challenges to the control of this pest. This work was prepared to contribute to the development of T. urticae management programs in papaya crop, with the following objectives: a) insulations prospect of dying insects fungal strains of Beauveria bassiana, aiming its use in the control of T. urticae; b) evaluate the efficiency in mortality of T. urticae in the egg, larva and protonymph in vitro when contaminated with fenpropathrin (0.5 g / L), abamectin (0.6 g / L), Milbemectin (0, 3 g / L), lime sulfur (7.0 g / L), three isolates of B. bassiana and distilled water control. In the 1st stage of the work was obtained 10 strains of B. bassiana, reisolated of dying insects found in high backlands of Paraiba, which are kept in culture media in UFCG. Of these, three (P21CZ, P22CZ and P29CZ), analyzing the results obtained in vitro, can be attributed to those with the highest germination potential for use in vitro bioenaios, in view of the control of T. urticae, and They were sent to the Selectivity of Laboratory Chemicals, UFERSA. In the 2nd stage of the work, to start bioassays fertilized females of T. urticae for sheet Canavallia ensiformis discs were transferred. When the mites reached in each bioassay, the desired stage, egg, larva or protonymph prefaced the bioassay. Each disc was sprayed with the treatments contaminated by manually pressurized spray then left for a period of 1 hour for drying, removing excess waste. Soon after drying were transferred to air-conditioned BOD chambers, where they were kept under controlled temperature conditions of 25 ± 1 ° C, photoperiod 12 hours and relative humidity of 60 ± 10%, to obtain biological data. The parameters evaluated were: duration and mortality of eggs, larvae, and protonymphs deutonymphs. The results of the three bioassays were subjected to analysis of variance and the means compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. Although the contaminated phase in the three bioassays have not been affected, there was cumulative mortality in the subsequent phases. The fenpropathrin insecticide caused 100% mortality in bioassays with egg and larva stage. The fenpropathrin chemical acaricides, milbemectin and abamectin were more efficient in all three bioassays with average values similar mortality. For directly treated larvae the abamectin, caused longer-term contact of the larvae. The isolated B. bassiana P22CZ, the concentration (2.5 x 106), had the highest mortality rate 63.8%. We observed a positive relation between increased exposure time of the mites to concentrations of isolated P29CZ and the highest concentration applied. The percentage of cumulative mortality by lime sulfur in the three bioassays, egg, larva and protonymph were low, with values of 8.8%, 7.5% and 25%.

Evaluation des propriétés immunomodulatrices de la bactérie lactique Lactobacillus plantarum NCIMB8826 dans le cadre de l'allergie aux acariens / Evaluation of the immunomodulatory properties of the lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum NCIMB8826 in the context of house dust mite allergy

Rigaux, Peter 05 December 2008 (has links)

Buys, Irma 09 September 2003 (has links)
The indirect victim's experience of suicide and the victimisation resulting from the incident was studied. The Indirect Victim's Experience Model of a Suicide Incident (see Figure 2.1) was designed as a theoretical framework to direct the research findings and for the interpretation of data. A qualitative exploratory approach was used and a group of 20 respondents was selected by means of purposive and snowball sampling methods. All the respondents were interviewed personally. The interpretation and analysis of the data showed that the assumptions based on Janoff-Bulman and Frieze's theory and certain societal myths regarding suicide still exist. These assumptions and myths could subconsciously have an influence on the nature and extent of the victimisation experienced by the next of kin. The respondents themselves accepted these assumptions and myths. Research findings further showed that these assumptions are affected upon receiving the news of the suicide, while myths are destroyed. This could have an influence on the victim's experience of suicide. Every indirect victim functions before, during and after the suicide incident within a specific family and social system. The way in which the indirect victim experiences the support and integration from within the family and social system, determines the acceptance or non-acceptance of the death by suicide of a significant other. This will also have an influence on the indirect victim's reintegration into society in the short and long term. The need of the indirect victim to be involved within a family and society was clearly identified during the study. These findings made it possible to make practical recommendations with regard to the indirect victim's experience of suicide. Society should be informed about the realities and results of suicide. In addition, these findings highlighted further areas for research. / Thesis (MA (Criminology))--University of Pretoria, 2004. / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted

Análise de perigos e pontos críticos de controle no processamento de farinha de trigo integral / Hazard analysis and critical control points in the processing of whole wheat flour

Márcia Dimov Nogueira 21 August 2000 (has links)
Food safety is a major concern facing the food industry today. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) provides a structured approach to the assurance of safety of products. The aim of this study was to verify the use of HACCP system in a milling industry, precisely in the whole wheat flour production. At first step two hazards were analyzed: deoxynivalenol and allergenic mites in whole wheat flour Thirty (30) lots of flour were collected in an industry which capacity was 15 ton./h in São Paulo city. Those lots had 30 sub-samples of argentine (A) wheat (12,8% average moisture content), 17 sub-samples of brazilian (B) wheat (13,1% m.c.), 30 sub-samples of wheat for milling (M) (15,6% m.c), and 30 sub-samples of whole wheat flour (FTI) that were analyzed in a five months period (from 97/october to 98/march). Light filth was isolated from grains and flour, according to Official Methods of AOAC International. Methodology of extraction of light filth from whole wheat flour was studied to know the repeatability according to AOAC methods. Fungi isolation was performed according to AOAC/FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manual (1992) methodology; genera were identified according GELLI et al.(1990), SAMSON et al (1995), and PITI and HOCKING (1997). Detection and quantification of deoxynivalenol (DON) were done by thin layer chromatography (TLC) according to SABINO et al. (1989).The most significant light filth contamination in wheat were mites (A= 90%, B= 53%, M= 77% e FTI= 57%), argentine wheat had as a predominant mite the family Tarsonemidae and flour had Acaridae. The average fungal contamination in grains was 99%, 95% e 94% in argentine, brazilian and wheat for milling respectively. The predominant genera was Aspergillus spp ( A= 79,0, B=39,3% e M= 64,2 %), and Fusarium was the least frequent in wheat (A>/b>=2,7%, B= 2,8% e M=1,5%). Only one lot of whole wheat flour was contaminated by DON at level 231 ng/g. This study showed that HACCP system is appropriated for control hazards in milling industry. However, DON should be controlled before wheat get into industry, and this control need to be registered. Mites are new emergentes to cause allergy by ingestion and have to be controlled by GMP procedures.

Avaliação dos fatores de risco no processamento de café verde para o aparecimento de ocratoxina A (OTA) / Evaluation of risk factors in green coffee processing for ochratoxin A (OTA)

Nogueira, Márcia Dimov 03 April 2007 (has links)
The ochratoxin A (OTA) is considered to be among the most significant coffee contaminants with related hazards. With the purpose to study the origin of the OTA in the processing of green coffee and to evaluate the possible risk factors (region, step of processing, fungi, insects and mites) that could contribute in the OTA presence, had been selected three regions (states) of Brazil: Bom Jardim/RJ, Espírito Santo do Pinhal/SP and Cornélio Procópio/PR. A total of 109 samples of coffee beans were collected in conformity with flow chart established at different stages of ripening and processing: cherry (field), dry method, wet method, and warehouse and varrição coffee, from May to August of 2002. Of these samples 10 had presented OTA, which varied in its quantification from 3 to 101 ng.g-1. The biggest prevalence of OTA was the varrição coffee 57%, the wet method presented a prevalence of 10,3% and dry way 7%. In the stage cherry fungi potentially toxigenic was more found Penicillium spp, the insects had been the larvae of Diptera and the Homoptera; in the wet way it was found Aspergillus section Nigri and Circundatti and Penicillium spp, the predominant infestation was the coffee berry borer and the mite of the Acaridae family; in the stage wet methods spp was registered the isolation the Penicillium spp and Aspergillus section Nigri, the predominant infestation was the coffee berry borer together with the mites of the Acaridae family; in the stage of warehouse had been isolated Penicillium spp and Aspergillus section Nigri, and the predominant insect was the coffee berry borer and mites of the family Acaridae; in the varrição coffee had been isolated Penicillium spp and Aspergillus section Nigri the coffee berry borer was the most present insects together of Diptera. The results of each step had been with compared by Analysis of Variance. In the analysis of risk factors the varrição coffee\" was the factor most strongly related to the risk of the presence of OTA (p<0,001 ).

Phenology of hazelnut big bud mites in Canterbury and implications for management

Webber, J. D. January 2007 (has links)
Eriophyoid big bud mites are key pests of hazelnuts throughout the world, although little is known of the identity and impact of the species on New Zealand hazelnut crops. The key objectives of this study were to determine the species of mite present on New Zealand crops, explore a method of monitoring mite emergence from overwintering big buds, determine the phenology of mites in relation to tree phenology and weather, and identify the optimum timing for control measures. The presence of both Phytoptus avellanae (Nalepa 1889) (Acari: Phytoptidae) and Cecidophyopsis vermiformis (Nalepa 1889) (Acari: Eriophyidae) was confirmed, the latter species being a new record for New Zealand. Preliminary diagnostic DNA sequences were determined for both species. A sticky band technique was developed to monitor mite emergence from overwintering big buds, and mite emergence was found to occur between early and late spring. Mite emergence and movement occurred when daily temperatures were greater than 15 degrees C and when mean temperatures were greater than 9 degrees C, with mite emergence increasing with temperature. It proved difficult to relate the phenology of hazelnut to mite emergence, however, the development of new buds during mite emergence was a crucial factor in the infestation of new buds. An accumulated heat sum model (DD), started at Julian date 152 and using a lower threshold temperature of 6 degrees C, predicted the onset of emergence on two cultivars and at two sites as occurring at approximately 172 DD. A regression model based on leaf number, bud height, bud width, DD and Julian date provided a more satisfactory prediction of percent accumulated mite emergence. It is recommended both peak mite emergence and the appearance of hazelnut buds should be used to optimise the time to apply control measures. Therefore, a control should be applied before buds measure 0.5 x 0.5 mm (width x height), are enclosed within the axil, and have a rounded tip, or, when 50% accumulated mite emergence has occurred, which ever occurs first. A preliminary field experiment tested the application of sulphur (40 g/10 litres of 800 g/kg No Fungus Super Sulphur) at 2, 50 and 80% accumulated mite emergence. The greatest reduction in mite numbers was achieved with an application at approximately 50% emergence. Considerable variation in mite emergence occurred between years, therefore optimum timing of controls would need to be determined by monitoring mites, new buds and weather conditions each year. Field collection of mites also identified the presence of Typhlodromus doreenae Schicha (Acari: Phytoseiidae) which would warrant further study for inclusion in an integrated mite control programme.

Ménot, René-Pierre 29 June 1987 (has links) (PDF)
