Convergência digital e a telefonia móvel: implicações à gestão estratégica e à inovação. / Digital convergence and mobile telecommunications: Implications toward strategic management and innovation.Maria Alice Braga Frontini 25 April 2008 (has links)
Telecommunications industry faces fierce competition both locally and globally, in which innovation plays a significant role for companies competitiveness and prosperity. In addition, a variety of technological solutions brings up uncertainty about users embracing to new technologies and about businesses models profitability. One element that enables mobile operators to differentiate is the innovation triggered by digital convergence of the following technologies: information processing, distribution and presentation. Though digital convergence appeared in the sixties with TCP/IP protocol, in fact, it is nowadays that new convergent products or services are available to end customers. Under these circumstances of fierce competition and uncertainties, it is relevant that strategic initiatives become properly managed, specifically the ones related to innovation based on digital convergence, in order to enable sustainable competitive advantage. This research aims to identify and analyze implications of digital convergence between telecommunications and IT toward strategic management, specifically in Brazilian mobile industry. In this project IT is applied within a broad concept proposed by Porter and Millar (1987), in which it encompasses information systems, hardware/software, telecommunications, automation, multi-media resources to treat and use data, information and knowledge. Case study is the method chosen. Brazilian mobile operators are investigated in order to build a framework for assessing the impacts of digital convergence, and to identify potential adjustments or extensions to strategic management theory. This research intends to answer: Why does digital convergence between telecommunications and IT impact strategic management related to innovation in the mobile telecommunications industry? Are there any dominant or specific characteristics of digital convergence between telecommunications and IT in the mobile industry, which justify changes in strategic management or in innovation technology management theories? How should be treated strategic management models in telecommunications industry, to accommodate implications of digital convergence between telecommunications and IT? In order to accomplish the investigation, three relevant Brazilian mobile operators are chosen to participate on this research. Each company has a different position in the convergent value system between telecommunications and IT, and on the type of convergence focused. The main results achieved are: a proposed complement to Fransmans digital convergence model (2001), in order to capture the dynamic aspects of competition and collaboration within the convergent industries; an identification of a common trajectory among Brazilian mobile operators within the digital convergence business environment. This research project can be considered relevant. Due to the fact that Brazilian mobile operators take in one hand a lead attitude in disseminating innovations based on digital convergence; in the other hand a conventional attitude in managing it as R&D investments.

onde inicia a desaceleração a caminho da maturidade.
Finalmente, a pesquisa
as tarifas e a
telefonia celular no Brasil. / [en] Since its appearance in Brasil, in 1990, the mobile phones

mercado brasileiro e 200 no mercado alemão.
[en] With more than 150 million mobile phones under operation and a
penetration rate close to 80 lines per 100 inhabitants, the Brazilian mobile market
is entering in the maturity, where the average rate is equal to 100 lines per 100
inhabitants. Following the trend of these markets, the introduction of the mobile
number portability has been concluded in March 2009 and has as main objectives
to reduce the switching barriers, increase the level of competition and encourage
the switching process among the operators. The purpose of this study is to identify
the elements which influence the switching intention and, based on a model,
compare the Brazilian mobile market to the German one, considered already
mature. For the study, a sample of 202 users was collected in the Brazilian market
and 200 in the German one. Applying the Structural Equation Model (SEM), it
was possible to identify, in both markets, that the customer satisfaction is a strong
antecedent, with great influence in the switching intention. Moreover, the data
analysis indicates that in the Brazilian market the service quality has a higher
influence than in the German one. For the German users, the perceived price
appear to be more important. The results from the hypotheses tests indicate that
the perception of the service quality and the perceived price is higher in the
German market, while the Brazilian customers still feel high switching barriers.
The findings intent to contribute for the academic knowledge due to the
investigation of the relationships among the constructs analyzed, and to suggest
insights that can help the market players in the development of market strategies.

[en] LOYALTY POSSIBILITIES IN THE MOBILE SERVICE / [pt] POSSIBILIDADES DE FIDELIZAÇÃO NO SERVIÇO DE TELEFONIA CELULARRODRIGO CAVALIERI DE SOUZA 02 July 2004 (has links)
[en] This research identifies the atributes to promote customer
loyalty for mobile operators, in order to help them in
retain its actual and future customers. It accomplishes its
goal through the conjoint analysis theory. The attributes
and levels choice resulted from interviews made with
mobile operators executives and mobile users. The conjoint
stimuli were defined following the basic principle of
fractional factorial design. The partial utilities of the
attributes levels show that equipment design, coverage
quality and monthly cost presented a high perception and
relative importance, which in turn, are recommended for
customer loyalty.

impactos no dia-a-dia
[en] During the last years, mobile telecommunication has been a
segment with
remarkable commercial success in Brazil, presenting a fast
user base growth and a
market penetration that exceeded the best expectations
from the own operators. A
significant part of this success is due to the adoption of
cell phone by lower
income users. Considering this context, this research aims
to study the impacts of
mobile telecommunication for this specific segment, by
depicting the motivations
for its usage, the impacts on user´s daily life and how
they learned and use
available services. Based on extensive interviews with
lower median family
income users, the research indicates that the cell phone
can help improve life
quality, through social integration and greater work
opportunities. On the other
hand, we can note an opportunity to improve cell phone
usage among lower
income users, by simplifying and divulgating the benefits
of existing services.

Examining institutional entrepreneurship at early moments : the case of mobile health in England and FinlandNyberg, Roy January 2014 (has links)
If you have an idea about applying a proven technology to improve the processes in a new area of society, what does it take to implement it in a way that it has wide impact and endures? This is a relevant question particularly now, at the dawn of the age of 'big data', as information and communication technologies are adopted in many areas to harness the ability to collect, retrieve and analyse large amounts of information, and be made available at the level of individual users. Extraordinarily powerful devices developed in recent years offer much promise, but as many examples, such as Betamax, WAP-technology, HD DVD and netbooks, show that even potent technologies may fail to gain predominance and survive. The concept of institutional entrepreneurship is a useful framework to analyse these complex issues as it embodies a comprehensive analytical perspective, combining attention to the institutional environment as well as to the efforts by interested and re-sourced actors. I use this concept to I investigate the efforts to introduce mobile technology into health care in England and Finland. I employ a distinct research strategy that avoids a retrospective bias, through the collection and analysis of qualitative data before known outcomes, from a wide range of technology, care, regulatory and intermediary organisations. I uncover some of the difficulties to technology adoption and develop arguments about the types of efforts and the impact of context at the early moment stage that contribute to the further development of the concept of institutional entrepreneurship.

Network effects, compatibility, and adoption of standardsGrajek, Michał 09 February 2005 (has links)
This thesis introduces a structural econometric model of demand exhibiting direct network effects. The structural approach we follow allows us to identify the extent of network effects and compatibility between competing networks. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first model that facilitates the identification in the case of direct network effects. At the same time, it is the first attempt to assess the degree of compatibility in an econometric framework. The model is then applied to investigate demand for mobile telecommunications service and the link between adoptions of ISO 9000 standard and international trade. The estimation results allow us to formulate some interesting policy conclusions.

The political economy of the regulatory processDuso, Tomaso 17 July 2002 (has links)
Regulation, like many other policy decisions, results out of a complex process that is shaped by political as well as economic forces. Therefore, regulatory decisions must be endogenized when studying their impact on the market outcome. This thesis offers various econometric approaches to study this issue. In the first contribution, I analyze how a country's political and bureaucratic institutions, as well as its political environment, affect the entry liberalization of the mobile telecommunications industry in OECD states during the 1990s. I found that majoritarian countries, countries with more accountable regulators, and countries with right-wing governments liberalized more intensely, whereas countries with consensus-type of democracies, a presidential regime, coalition rather than one-party governments, and a strong incumbent firm liberalized less. Next, I focus on the firms' strategic behavior and analyze how this is influenced by the political and regulatory environment. I use data from the U.S. mobile telecommunications industry in the late 1980's, which can be seen as a natural experiment because of its particular market and regulatory structure. The second essay studies the relation between the choice of a regulatory design and firms' pricing behavior. I show that, through their lobbying activities, firms endogenously influence the price-regulatory regime under which they operate. Accounting for this endogenous selection, price regulation is observed to decrease cellular tariffs. However, regulation is not particularly effective in reducing prices because firms prevent it from occurring where it would be mostly successful. In the final contribution together with Astrid Jung, we investigate the link between firms' political decision, i.e. their lobbying expenditures, and their product market conduct. The relationship between collusion and the industry's lobbying expenditures is strongly significant and negative: Higher lobbying expenditures foster a more competitive industry and collusive conduct reduces firms' contributions to the political system. The interpretation is that, if firms' political goals are not perfectly aligned, collusion in the product market reduces industry's total campaign contributions by enhancing firms' coordination in lobbying.
