Exploring The Use Of Mobile Phones For Supporting English Language Learners

Saran, Murat 01 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
With their widespread use and their features such as mobility, localization, and personalization, mobile phones offer a great potential for out-of-class learning. Yet, there is scarce research on the use of mobile phones in language learning contexts nor any on using multimedia messages via mobile phones to improve learners&#039 / vocabulary acquisition. The major aim of this study was to investigate the potentials and effectiveness of using mobile phones in foreign language education. In particular, the effects of using multimedia messages via mobile phones for improving language learners&rsquo / acquisition of words were explored. A mixed method approach involving both quantitative and qualitative components was employed in this study. The quantitative part of the study followed a pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design. The qualitative part of the study included post-study semi-structured interviews with the students, and a questionnaire involving open ended items. The participants of this study were a group of students attending the English Preparatory School of an English-medium university in Turkey. Three different groups were formed in order to investigate the comparative effectiveness of supplementary materials delivered through 3 different means: mobile phones, web pages, and printed. Analyses of the quantitative data showed that using mobile phones had positive effects on students&rsquo / vocabulary learning. The qualitative data collected through the questionnaire and the interviews supported this finding. All participants provided positive feedback about the mobile learning application used in this study.

Navigering ur ett användarperspektiv : En experimentell studie med responsiva webbsidor i mobilen / Navigation through a usability perspective : An experimental study with responsive websites in mobile phones

Johannesson, Joella, Lundbjörk, Josefin January 2015 (has links)
This thesis will bring up whether responsive navigations is useful and which strategies users might have when they browse on a mobile website. The purpose is to shed some light on the subject of responsive navigations that it is something one need to take a closer look at. It plays an important role when you develop responsive websites. In this thesis there will be a study with experimental elements. The participants are going to test a few types of menus that is available on responsive mobile sites today. The participants in the study will also be part of a short interview after they have completed the study. The result shows that users have different strategies when they are on a mobile website. There were for example some who wanted filters that made it easier to find on the website. It also shows that the websites that are in this study have some problems that you as user come across when you visit the site. In the conclusion you can see that there are a few things you need to consider when one creates a website for mobile phones. There are some theories that indicates that the website needs to be obvious in how you use it.

Γιαννακάκης, Γεώργιος 07 June 2010 (has links)
Telemedicine is being rapidly developed. Practice and provision of medical services from distance via the use of information and telecommunication technology can prove lifesaving, especially in cases of isolated places (i.e. islands, mountainous villages), where access to medical services is time-consuming or infeasible. Powerful programming languages, such as JavaME, which are supported by the modern mobile phones, gives the possibility for designing and developing of useful telemedicine applications. In this thesis, it will be presented the know-how that is required in order to transform the mobile phone into a device able to capture, process, display and transmit the electrocardiographic signal. The electrocardiographic signal is transformed into a sound signal, through modulation, with a view to be recognizable by the mobile phone and then it is transformed again into an electrocardiographic signal, through demodulation, with a view to be further processed by the mobile phone. Also, it will be presented the software that has built so as to carry out these functions.

Mobile technologies and public spaces

Mani, Sanaz 05 1900 (has links)
Mobile technologies are the latest technologies in the realm of communication media. They have the potential to flatten the world by making it a place where gender, age, class, race and nationality can no longer hold us back from being heard and being informed. We have learned that these technologies can help to liberate and empower us, and they can lead to a collective cognition as much as they can distract us from what we need to know about the world we live in. In Greece thousands of years ago, a selected number of Greeks had a public space called the Agora to discuss the issues that concerned the public, meaning each and every citizen. They were the first to be able to create the space and place were the word “democracy” could be brought into language; the very word that was used to start a new war in the era of a communication revolution in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. There are still issues that concern the public today such as wars, global warming, homelessness or human rights which are all matters of our collective cognition. However, today in an age of information revolution the public life of people and their collective cognition is being exercised mostly in the virtual spaces of the Internet. Simultaneously, some physical spaces are being abandoned by people. This thesis investigates the possibility of having physical public spaces that are enriched with communication media and not weakened by it. If architects rethink their designs based on a new understanding of the networked society it might be possible to turn this “networked individualism” into a networked collectivism. However, most designed public spaces fail to offer new possibilities that can transform space for the new generation of users. Here, the aim is to understand a new generation of users. Who have they become as a result of new communication media? And how can architects design in a way that responds to this new subject in architecture?

3D objektų eksportavimas į M3G formatą, naudojamą 3D grafikai mobiliuosiuose telefonuose / Exporting 3d objects to m3g format used for 3d graphics in mobile phones

Pragarauskaitė, Julija 08 September 2009 (has links)
Šiame magistro darbe nagrinėjamas M3G standartas, skirtas 3D grafikai mobiliuose telefonuose, tiriamos 3D modelių eksportavimo į M3G formatą galimybės bei M3G standarto suderinamumas. Apžvelgiamos 3D modeliavimo bei eksportavimo priemonės bei pasirinkta modeliavimo priemonė Blender, įgalinanti pasiekti 3D modelio duomenis naudojant Python skriptus. Sukurta eksportavimo iš Blender modeliavimo priemonės į M3G formatą schema. Schema realizuojama suprogramavus eksportavimo priemonę vartojant Python bei Java programavimo kalbas. / In the master thesis the M3G standard for 3D graphics in mobile phones, its compatibility and possibilities of exporting 3D models to M3G format are investigated. Most popular 3D modelling and exporting to M3G format tools are analyzed. Blender was selected as main master thesis modelling tool for possibility to reach 3D model data using Python scripts. An exporting scheme from Blender to M3G format was created and realized using Python and Java programming languages. The exporter works as a plug-in for the Blender modelling tool. It can be accessed in the main Blender menu. The Python programming language in the exporter was used for extracting data from 3D scene and saving it in XML format. The Java programming language was used for reading 3D data from XML file, making hierarchical 3D elements tree, creating 3D elements tree, constructing data arrays and sectors, where 3D data arrays and sectors are kept and exporting data to M3G file. The exporter can load an exported M3G file to mobile application and show it in Java emulator – mobile phone. On the basis of several 3D models, the created exporter was compared to other exporters using the quality of performance, reliability and other criteria.

Paauglių naudojimasis mobiliaisiais telefonais socialinio elgesio kontekste / Using mobile phones by adolescents in the context of social behaviour

Ramašauskienė, Giedrė 17 July 2014 (has links)
Tyrimo objektas - paauglių naudojimasis mobiliaisiais telefonais socialinio elgesio kontekste. Tyrimo hipotezė - intensyvesnis naudojimasis mobiliaisiais telefonais paauglystėje lemia retesnius tiesioginius kontaktus su socialinės aplinkos dalyviais. Tyrimo tikslas - išanalizuoti paauglių naudojimosi mobiliaisiais telefonais ypatumus socialinio elgesio kontekste. Tyrimo uždaviniai: 1. Išanalizuoti mokslinę literatūrą, atskleidžiant priklausomybių nuo mobiliųjų telefonų teorinius aspektus paauglystės raidos ypatumų kontekste. 2. Remiantis mokslo literatūros analize, parengti tyrimo instrumentą, leidžiantį nustatyti: - naudojimosi mobiliaisiais telefonais dažnį ir pobūdį. – paauglių naudojimosi mobiliaisiais telefonais dažnio... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Scientists, emphasizing the positive aspect of mobile phones spread, indicate that mobile phones allow us to create and maintain various social relations (Katz, 2006). They allow to create personal and group identity and their social network (Castells and others, 2007). They improve relations between persons of the same age, parents and children's, give better opportunities to children's supervision and control (Ling, Heather, 2011). However, teenagers fascination in mobile phones is uncontrolled. Wrong and intensive usage of them can cause serious social problems: they make negative relations between children and parents, they can influence and change rules of interpersonal communication with people of the same age, they can restrict direct social activity, can badly influence teenagers health and psychosocial welfare. The object of the investigation – teenagers usage of mobile phones in the context of social behaviour. The hypothesis of investigation – a very intensive usage of mobile phones in adolescence predetermines rarer contacts with members of social environment. The aim of investigation – to analyse teenagers use of mobile phones peculiarities in the context of social behaviour. The goals of investigation: 1. To analyse scientific literature revealing addiction to mobile phones theatrical aspects in the context of teenagers development peculiarities. 2.

Παπαδόπουλος, Ανδρέας 21 December 2012 (has links)
In the current thesis an inverted index was designed for Adroid sms messages which is speeding the information retrieval from the sms database.

NA PALMA DA MÃO: A difusão de celulares e smartphones e possibilidades para o ensino-aprendizagem no Brasil / in the palm: the spread of mobile phones and smartphones and possibilities for teaching and learning in Brazil

VOLTOLINI, ANA GRACIELA MENDES FERNANDES DA FONSECA 11 April 2016 (has links)
Submitted by Noeme Timbo (noeme.timbo@metodista.br) on 2016-08-16T17:53:10Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Graciela Mendes Fernandes da Fonseca Voltolini.pdf: 3241377 bytes, checksum: 25fd43a67cfbf4260a323ff1fff1e3e9 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-16T17:53:10Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Graciela Mendes Fernandes da Fonseca Voltolini.pdf: 3241377 bytes, checksum: 25fd43a67cfbf4260a323ff1fff1e3e9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-04-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The research considers the propagation of mobile phones and smartphones and the consequences of this fact on possibilities for teaching and learning. Communication apparatus have always been linked to the teaching-learning process. However, with the most intense development, in recent decades, of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), this relation has gained new contours. The Internet arises, the evolution of computing machines and, recently, the explosion of mobile devices, providing new products and converged services. In this context, mobile and smartphones have been used and recommended for support and complement of the teaching-learning process: the so-called Mobile Learning. This segment grows due to the rapid expansion and cheapening of these technologies in society. To scientifically verify this relation, a qualitative research was performed, exploratory type, with two projects of mobile learning underway in Brazil, the Palma - Literacy Mother Language Program and School with Cell Phone. So, from the data from the research, we have identified some aspects related to the use of mobile phones and smartphones for the process of teaching and learning that contribute to the understanding of this field still under construction in Brazil. The use of these devices as support for teaching and learning processes in the studied projects is outlined by aspects technology, public and context and new technologies and mobile learning. The device aspect unfolds in dimensions as dissemination, multi-functionality and accessibility support the proposals, still favor characteristics identified as important to the process of teaching and learning nowadays, as mobility and portability. The projects analyzed show potential and appropriate methodology to the context for which they were created and applied. However, the research indicated that while cellphones and smartphones represent the pinnacle of technological convergence and are considered extremely popular and accessible in contemporary society, with concrete possibilities as in the analyzed projects, failed to gain a solid position as a tool for teaching and learning. Such indication is due, according to the research, to lack of: support, practices show extremely dependent on public or private initiative for its extent and continuity; awareness for the use of available technologies, do not consider the device of the students and a plan that that includes, enables and encourages the use of these devices. Moreover, the research also highlights the need for a critical view of the use and function of technology in these processes.
