Priming on onion seeds and effects of drying and storage.

Caseiro, Roseli Fátima 13 February 2004 (has links)
This work was carried out at the seed analysis laboratories of the Department of Crop Science, Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (USP/ESALQ) and of the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science of the Ohio State University. The objectives were to study different methods of priming for onion seeds and also to verify the influence of drying and storage on the physiological potential of primed seeds. The research was conducted in three phases. First, using six lots of onion seeds (cultivar Granex 33), the effects of three priming techniques were compared: a) hydropriming, through seed imbibition between layers of paper towel, for 48 or 96 h, at 15ºC; b) osmopriming, using PEG 8000 solution with osmotic potentials of - 0.5 MPa and -1.0 MPa, for 24 and 48 h, at 15ºC) and c) seed hydration by the drum priming technique, at 15ºC and 25ºC, which the optimal amount of water added and imbibition periods were variable among seed lots. At the second phase, drying procedures after priming were tested. For that, after hydropriming (between layers of paper towel, for 48h), six lots of "Petroline", were submitted to fast drying (in an oven with air circulation) and to slow drying (in a chamber at 20ºC and 50%-60% relative humidity, for 72h). The influence of pre-drying incubation was also evaluated by using: a) PEG 8000 solution, at 8ºC, for 24, 72 and 120h; b) waterbath at 40ºC, for 1, 3 and 5h; and c) incubation in an oven, at 35ºC, for 24 and 48h. In the third phase, the storability of four seed lots each of three cultivars (Petroline, Primavera and Crioula Mercosul), hydroprimed and fast dried, was evaluated; samples of those lots were stored in a dry chamber (relative humidity around 50%, at 20ºC) and in the laboratory environment, during 9 months. The results showed that: a) the hydropriming, between layers of paper towel, is an adequate procedure for priming onion seeds, with beneficial effects mainly on speed of germination; b) for choosing the physiological conditioning procedure, the seed moisture content should be considered after hydration, it’s not being recommended the imbibition during pre-determined period; the onion seeds should reach moisture content of 44% to 49% after the hydration; c) the process of fast drying, in oven with air circulation, at 35ºC-40ºC, is convenient for the drying of primed onion seeds, inducing desiccation tolerance and d) the primed seed performance during storage is dependent on genotypes.

Análise dos resultados do ensaio CBR realizado em condições variadas de umidade pós-compactação / Analysis of the CBR test results performed under varied conditions of post-compactation moisture

Luz, Marta Pereira da 29 May 2003 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the variation influence of the moisture content on the value of the CBR support index of a granulometrically stabilized crushed stone and six soils. The soils studied were divided into three pairs with similar particle size distribution curves and same HRB and USCS classification. Each pair is formed by a soil of lateritic and non-lateritic behaviors. The specimens were moulded in the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density obtained from the results of the standard Proctor tests. The materials were analysed under four moisture conditions: without immersion, after reaching half of the stabilization moisture, and after four and eight days of immersion. The internal moisture distribution of the specimens was observed for each situation. The internal distribution moisture was observed for each situation. The influence of the aging of the loose and compacted materials was analysed for four days without immersion in the test results of CBR. According to the results it was possible to correlate the influence of both granulometry and genesis of the materials on test results of CBR support index in the diverse moisture conditions evaluated.

Silva, Juliane Gomes da 05 August 2016 (has links)
The use of fast and efficient methods for determining seed moisture can help in the preservation of forest species, because moisture is one of the factors that most influence on the deterioration of forest seeds. The objective is to investigate whether the moisture content can influence the storage and/or submission to germination tests, also to test the mechanisms of dormancy, duration and efficient methods that facilitate the germination in species of pyrenes. The experiment was conducted in three stages: first stage was tested the method of stove at 105 ± 3 °C for 24 hours, with five repetitions and containers with 5 grams of wet seeds. Second stage, the method of intermittent drying in the stove at 40 °C for 30 minutes until stabilize the weight, repeated by 15 times. Third stage method of stove at 105 ± 3 °C for 24 hours, with five repetitions and containers with 5 grams of dried seeds. Byrsonima crassifolia presents characteristics of orthodox species, with high humidity after the beneficiation, but to be subjected to drying procedures reached low water levels, however, remained within normal limits. The wet basis of the pyrenes of Byrsonima crassifolia found was of 49.71% of moisture and in the dry basis reached 6.3% of moisture, this way can be inferred that the seeds tested are suitable for storage and / or submission to germination tests. After the humidity test was conducted the germination test with the pyrenes of Byrsonima crassifolia, considering the storage time of 0, 60, 120 and 180 days and the methods of overcoming dormancy, being: chemical scarification with sulfuric acid (H2SO4 ) concentrated by 20 and 40 minutes; gibberellic acid concentration 500mg L-1 (GA3) for 24 and 48 hours; mechanical scarification with sandpaper number 80 for 30 seconds; sandpaper number 80 for 30 seconds more immersion in water for 24 and 48 hours respectively and the control. The objective is to evaluate the germination percentage (% G) and germination speed index (GSI) of pyrenes of Byrsonima crassifolia, in each planting period. Byrsonima crassifolia, has better results at 120 days of storage and the most efficient methods were chemical scarification, superior results were evidenced with H2SO4 40 minutes GA3 48 hours, however the storage and all methods of overcoming dormancy presented results, the most satisfactory was to the 120 days.

O. Kuntze /

Abreu, Daniela Cleide Azevedo de. January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: The understanding of the physiological behavior of seeds is essential to define the appropriated safe storage technique. However, one of the main problems, for many Brazilian native forest species, is the lack of accurate information about this issue. The seeds moisture content and storage temperature are crucial factors for the preservation of the physiological quality of the seeds. The general objective of the present work was to study the possibility of a long term conservation of Cariniana legalis (Mart.) O. Kuntze seeds, in a germplasm bank. The specific objectives were: (a) study the seeds tolerance to dehydration and hydration using saturated saline solutions; (b) classify the physiological behavior of the seeds regarding the storage and (c) evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds with different moisture contents for 360 days in freezer (-20ºC) and liquid nitrogen (-196ºC). The results showed that (a) the construction of the isotherm sorption with saturated saline solutions was efficient to determine different levels of water balance; (b) seeds tolerate dehydration and negative temperature, presenting an orthodox behavior; (c) the most suitable moisture content for seed storage in freezer and liquid nitrogen was of 3,7% (d) the seeds stored with this moisture content were better preserved in liquid nitrogen; (e) the cryopreservation of C. legalis dried seeds showed the possibility of long-term storage in germplasm banks. / Orientador: Antonio Carlos de Souza Medeiros / Coorientador: Ivor Bergemann de Aguiar / Banca: Antonio Carlos Nogueira / Banca: Claudio José Barbedo / Banca: Rinaldo Cesar de Paula / Banca: Teresinha de Jesus Deléo Rodrigues / Doutor

Fire behaviour and impact on heather moorland

Davies, Gwilym Matthew January 2006 (has links)
For roughly the past 200 years land-managers have used the practice of “muirburning” to manipulate the structure of heather (Calluna vulgaris) to create a patchwork of habitat structures able to provide forage and nesting sites for red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) as well as grazing for sheep (Ovis aries) and red deer (Cervus elaphus). This thesis investigates both the behaviour and impact of management fires in recognition of the need to develop multi-aim land management practices that ensure both continued productivity and protection of biodiversity in the face of climatic and environmental change. Fuel structure and loading are crucial controlling factors on both fire behaviour and impact governing both rate of spread and heat release to the ground surface. A visual obstruction method is developed that estimates total and fine fuel loading as well as the structure of the heather canopy. In order to adequately understand fire impact a dimensional analysis approach is taken to estimating the mass of burnt heather stems. Experiments at a number of spatial and temporal scales relate variation in heather fuel moisture content to stand structure and variation in weather conditions. Monitoring shows moisture contents to be relatively stable temporally, but spatially variable. Periods of extreme low moisture contents in early spring are associated with frozen ground, winter cuticle damage and physiological drought. Such conditions may have contributed to the large number of wildfires in 2003. A replicated plot design was used to investigate the effect of weather conditions and fuel loading on fire behaviour. An empirical approach is taken to fire behaviour modelling with equations describing rate of spread and fireline intensity being developed on the basis of fuel structure descriptors and windspeed. The theoretical negative correlation between fuel bed density and rate of spread is demonstrated to hold true for heather stands, while the impact of heterogeneity in fuel bed structure is also investigated. Redundancy Analysis is used to investigate the influence of multiple predictors on a number of aspects of fire behaviour including: rate of spread, fireline intensity, flame length and ground surface heating. Data from this and previous studies are used to ground-truth a number of fire behaviour prediction systems including BehavePlus and the Canadian Fire Behaviour Prediction System. Finally linkages between fire behaviour, fire severity and heather regeneration are investigated. A number of proxy measures of ‘Immediate Severity’ are tested and used to examine the influence of fires on plant regeneration. The post-fire development of stands is shown to relate primarily to stand age and structure before burning, and to post-fire substrates rather than variation in fire behaviour and severity.

Evaluation of six tools for estimating woody biomass moisture content

Becerra Ochoa, Fernando Amador 13 December 2012 (has links)
Woody biomass transportation costs and market values/costs are strongly correlated with the woody biomass moisture content. Properly managing moisture content can potentially lead to economic and environmental advantages in biomass energy markets. Good management requires accurate moisture content measurements. Therefore, availability of accurate, precise, reliable, and efficient tools to assess woody biomass moisture content is essential. In this study, six different tools (Fibre-Gen HM200, IML Hammer, Humimeter BLW, Timbermaster, Humimeter HM1 and Wile Bio Meter) were evaluated. The six tools employed three different measurement technologies; acoustic, conductance, and capacitance. Woody biomass samples were collected over one season (summer 2011) at three different locations in western Oregon (Corvallis, Dallas, and Clatskanie) for three softwood species and three hardwood species: Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa L.), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), hybrid poplar (Populus spp.), Madrone (Arbutus spp.), and Garryana Oak (Quercus garryana Dougl. ex Hook). Twenty 3-meter long log (20 to 400mm diameter) specimens were collected per species; 18 specimens were divided into two different treatments (open vs. covered), and the two remaining specimens were chipped. In addition, approximately 100 kilograms per species of hogfuel (limbs and tops) were collected and chipped. Moisture content measurements of logs, chips, and hogfuel were made regularly over a four month period. These data was used to develop multiple linear regression models for assessing the moisture content of the six species using the six tools. The major factors considered in the regression models were species (6), treatment (2), and tools (6). The data were also used to estimate the sample size needed for each tool. The best tool from each technology type was identified. The results generated from this study show that (1) none of the tools are accurate without calibration for different species, (2) the best model/tool combination could only explain about 80% of the variability in measurements, (3) further product development is required in some cases to ensure that the tools are robust for industrial application, and (4) there is a wide range in efficiency of the tools (i.e., 50 minute tool efficiency range). The Fibre-Gen HM200 and Wile Bio Meter were the most accurate, precise and efficient tools tested. The cost of transporting woody biomass from the forest to woody biomass plants is "optimized" when the moisture content drops to approximately 30% (wet basis). Validation of the models developed for three of the tools tested (Fibre-Gen HM200, Humimeter BLW and the Wile Bio Meter) indicates that the tools are accurate below 35% MC (wet basis). This suggests they could be used for making threshold transportation decisions, i.e., determining when to haul. / Graduation date: 2013

STUDY OF THE INTERFACIAL TRANSITION ZONE “POROUS LIMESTONE AGGREGATES-CEMENT PASTE” : INFLUENCE OF PHYSICO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF AGGREGATES; CONSEQUENCE ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MORTAR.

Nguyen, Tien Dung 22 May 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study was to relate the characteristics of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) "aggregate-cement paste" to the characteristics of porosity, water absorption, resistance and roughness of porous limestones. The first part of this work was to study the influence of moisture content and resistance of aggregates on the mechanical strength of mortars. The results show that, for porous and absorbent limestones, mortars made from dry aggregates are more resistant than those made from wet aggregates. The second part of this work was to study the ITZ of composites “rock-cement paste”. It was found that the surface roughness and the moisture content of rocks significantly affect the tensile and shear strengths of composites. The last part is devoted to the microstructure of ITZ by image analysis. The evolution of average porosity of ITZ is related to the mechanical properties of mortars by Féret’s law demonstrating that the compressive strength depends mainly on the mesoporosity of ITZ. The porosity gradient is related to the degree of hydration gradient and the W/C ratio gradient. These latter two are calculated by applying Powers’ model. The results show that for porous and absorbent limestones, the cement pastes and the ITZs of dry and wet aggregates mortars are not equivalent although initially we aimed to the same W/C ratio.

Energieffektivisering av Limatvätten AB : Värmeåtervinning från manglar

Abdi, Faisa, Farah, Muse January 2018 (has links)
Energy efficiency is in the interest of all industries, as it involves the reduction of both energy and cost. The purpose of this project for a bachelor’s degree is to analyse potential energy recovery of waste heat from an ironer. The work was carried out at Limatvätten AB, which is a large and modern laundry facility. Limatvätten AB is a textile service company that has been in existence for 50 years. The Lima laundry’s main customers are from the hotel and restaurant business. Limatvätten AB has its own textiles that are rented to hotels, conferences, etc. The largest customers are in Sälenfjällen and in the Siljan region. The work is done by identifying moisture, temperature and dynamic pressure in an ironer Based on measurements, the amount of energy that can be recycled is calculated. Heat recovery system proposals are also given in the report. Aquavent is a heat exchanger that uses ventilation heat from the ironers. The water that is heated in the aquavent is led into the washing pipes, which leads to the reduction of steam consumption in washing processes. Temperature change depends on the heat exchanger's efficiency, the higher the temperature change, the more amount of energy recovery is obtained. After identification of the problem, a timetable was mapped, and appropriate instruments and interesting parameters were chosen. The moisture content, temperature and dynamic pressure have been measured. The equations described in the theory section are used for most of the calculations with the help of Excel. According to the result, the energy saving will be 184 MWh/year if all excess heat from a mangle is reused. Based on the result, the total savings potential is SEK 57 000 /year. According to the results, it is shown that there is the potential to use excess heat from the Lima wash ironers. In addition to the saving of energy, climate impact is also reduced, as the excess energy is again reused which would otherwise disappear into the atmosphere. If two of the ironers are coupled with a heat recovery system, it results in a doubling on the savings potential.

The understanding of the physiological behavior of seeds is essential to define the appropriated safe storage technique.
