It thus tries to identify traits in existing ideological heritage of the society at the time of this writing, to then, point to the possibilities of recurring mythic structures. This work makes a preliminary analysis on the cultural, social and religious world of the Apostle Paul and goes through a brief overview of the research s history. It offers a possibility of translation of the Greek text into Portuguese and then wants to view in graphic form the structure and movement of the "Christological hymn." It displays the monomyth and the discourse s analysis as methodological tools for the production of two new readings. Using these methodologies, this work seeks to show the similarities between certain recurring mythic structures and emptying of Christ in the Pauline tradition. It seeks to validate the proposal of this work presenting other mythics narratives that permeated the imagery of the Greco-Roman society. At the end suggests some steps to a reading of kenosis as social criticism.

September 11, 2001: a critical analysis of ideological representations on television news

Reid, Julie Barbara Jane 11 October 2004 (has links)
This dissertation analyses the extent to which dominant political ideologies generate meanings in television news texts. The working process of the television news system and the manner in which television news constructs news programmes are discussed. In light of the televisual mode of news production, the author demonstrates how ideologically inspired meanings can systematically enter the television news system and thus potentially manipulate the production of television news broadcasts, though making a semiotic analysis of the CNN representations of September 11. This study is situated within the field of visual culture studies, and semiotic theory is employed to a great extent throughout. The author discusses the influence of dominant political ideologies on the television news production process, and how this contributes to the restriction of the polysemy of the television news sign. Television news representations may be mediated and manipulated in such a way to encourage viewers to produce readings that are favourable towards a certain dominant political ideology. The many mechanisms that television news utilises to create meaning are discussed. The mechanisms that are identified by the author as being the most effective in the production of ideologically inspired meanings are paid particular attention. These semiotic mechanisms include the manipulation of iconic signs, the construction of arbitrary signs and the representation of myths. The CNN representations of the September 11 events are analysed for their ideological content, and the author contends that these televisual representations were deliberately constructed to inspire readings that would be favourable to the ideology of Americanism. Therefore, Americanism, as an example of a dominant political ideology, is discussed. The visual mechanisms employed by CNN after September 11 are analysed. These include the editing of visually recorded footage, the treatment of the newsreader and the incorporation of the image of the American flag. The author offers a reading of the ideological motivation of these texts. The media myths that are constructed to naturalise Americanism, such as the myth of the hero and the myth of the tower, are discussed with regard to the manner in which they were represented by CNN after September 11. The iconic representations of key political figures involved with the September 11 events are also discussed and their ideological meanings uncovered. The CNN television news broadcasts functioned both to inform an international audience of the terrorist attacks and reinforce an ideology in crisis: namely, Americanism. CNN repeatedly employed many visual mechanisms to encourage viewers to produce readings that were favourable to Americanism. While Americanism entered a period of crisis, it mobilised its Ideological State Apparatuses, including television news, to reinforce and justify its position of power in order to maintain its own dominance after a deliberate blow. This study suggests that the CNN representations of September 11 are an accurate indication of how dominant political ideologies can effect the construction of television news texts. Where television news broadcasters reach large audiences while being ideologically aligned, and viewers are deliberately encouraged to produce certain ideologically inspired readings, television news becomes a medium through which widespread ideological domination can be achieved. / Dissertation (MA (Visual Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Visual Arts / unrestricted

Mytologické a mýtotvorné rysy Hvězdných válek a specifika jejich příběhů coby příběhu na pokračování / Mythological and Mythogenic Aspects of Star Wars and the Specificities of its Stories in Regard to Serialized Storytelling

Pavlíček, Milan January 2011 (has links)
Mythological and Mythogenic Aspects of Star Wars and the Specificities of its Stories in Regard to Serialized Storytelling covers the six stories of the Star Wars series in relation to Emil Volek's story model whose terminology and story typology is used to describe how the stories influence one another, which is to say, how the stories influence the reception of the other stories in the series and how the reception has changed over time. The diploma thesis also examines how myth is being applied to Star Wars and reflects whether such connection is justified. Both Star Wars and myth are given a definition and the relationship between the series and Joseph Campbell's monomyth, a concept frequently connected to Star Wars, is explored. The final part of the text describes narrative elements and processes participating in the creation of the original trilogy. An appendix covers various issues in regard to the translation of the series into Czech and briefly evaluates existing translations.

The Layered Frames of Performed Tabletop: Actual-Play Podcasts and the Laminations of Media

Decicio, Brendan 01 December 2020 (has links)
Despite their sudden growth in popularity, the role-playing actual-play podcasts have either been ignored or grouped with the genre of audio drama in prior scholarly works. Examination using frame analysis shows, however, that these podcasts are distinct in their engagement of the audience on multiple, simultaneous levels; levels which correspond with well-known media genres such as Documentary, Fiction, and Game Play. Each frame has its own layer of identities, conduct, and avenue for appealing to audiences just as these genres have their own distinct appeals. Through the combinations of these frames, familiar tropes and techniques such as Short-Form Improv and Campbell's monomyth are broadened and challenged, and identities become entangled in this post-modern medium. Delineating the features of these frames and exploring their interactions and interconnectivity not only helps to distinguish the actual-play podcast as its own distinct podcast genre, but also highlights the potential for using such frames or frame analysis in other media forms.

Kaki, Shaho January 2023 (has links)
This thesis will look at the adaptation and transformation of classic mythology in modern movies through the lens of Joseph Campbells’s monomyth or “The Hero’s Journey.” The study delves into how contemporary films, like “Gods of Egypt,” “Clash of the Titans,” “Man of Steel,” and “The Wolverine,” utilize this archetypal narrative structure to craft the modern myths that resonate with the modern audiences. This thesis argues that the monomyth remains a fundamental narrative framwork within the contemporary film culture, adeptly adapted and reimagined to fit the modern storytelling sensibilities. By using qualitative methods, the study conducts a detailed analysis of selected film, identifying the stages of the Hero’s Journey and their alignment with classic mythology. The work of Hafçı and Erbay Aslıtürk in “Superheroes: Myth of Modern Age” and James J. Clauss’s “A Course on Classic Mythology in Film” is employed to contextualize the discussion within the broader scope of mythological influence in movies. These sources provide the necessary insight into how mythological heroes, often characterized by supernatural powers, reflect their cultural context, including social, sociological, and emotional states. Not only that but this thesis also considers Campbell’s book “The Hero with a Thousand Faces,” using its outlined 17 steps of the Hero’s Journey as a key analytical tool. The thesis aims to demonstrate the enduring relevance of mythology in the modern era, by showing how classical mythologies are not merely historical artifacts but continue to evolve and integrate into contemporary popular culture. So, I there for seek to reveal the mythological storytelling, while rooted in ancient traditions, remains a vibrant and influential force in shaping modern movies narrative.

A arquitetura mítica da narrativa rosiana: as raízes do monomito na travessia heróica de Augusto Matraga / The mythical architecture of the Guimarães Rosa s narrative: the roots of the monomyth in the Augusto Matraga s heroic crossing

The corpus adopted is the short story A Hora e Vez de Augusto Matraga. It also focuses the sources of the literary creation in which the author got his inspiration to conceive a character that although he symbolizes a man from Brazilian backlands, transcends the documental record, the ascension to the condition of mythical hero through the adventures and the search of the salvation of his soul. We started from the hypothesis of that the construction of the mythical character, according to the diagram of the monomyth, besides being an indelible features of identification of the myth in Rosa s fiction, also clarifies the importance of the metaphysical religious worries of the author about the conception of his work, because the hero of the monomyth shows, during his trajectory, features of rituals of initiation. The aspect of initiation of the trajectory of the mythological hero reveals the holy meaning of the myth of the hero: this one symbolizes the divine potential in human being who only can be developed due to a project of ascetic life and of a heroic ethos. Identifying the archetype of the mythological hero in creation of the character Augusto Matraga, according to the key of reading of the monomyth, we identify the meeting among myth, religion and literature in the work of an author who transcended the documental regionalism, as a result of the creation of the myth of the spiritual asceticism of a character in the heart of the backlands of the North of Minas Gerais / A pesquisa investiga a realização do discurso mítico rosiano por meio da construção da personagem mítica, segundo o modelo campbelliano do monomito.

Identity through the other : Canadian adventure romance for adolescents

Larsson, Clarence January 1996 (has links)
This study of Canadian adventure romance for adolescents seeks to demonstrate the cultural significance of the genre through close readings of James Houston's Frozen Fire and The White Archer, Monica Hughes's Hunter in the Dark and Ring-Rise, Ring-Set, as well as Markoosie's Harpoon of the Hunter. By means of a semiotic-structuralist approach I examine the texts as a signifying system conveying discourses that constitute a code of connection to the social context of contemporary young-adult readers.Structured on the formula: separation-initiation-return and informed by the symbolism of death-rebirth, the stories hold out the promise of a life-enhancing return. Roland Barthes's definition of myth as a mode of signification underpins my discussion of how the narrative conventions become vehicles of existential truths by replicating and intensifying adventurous experiences. With the quest for identity and the polarization between two worlds as structural determinants, the selected books juxtapose the values of Western civilization with those expressed through the Canadian North and its indigenous population. As a defining category of Canadian identity, the northern wilderness provides the space and the challenges for the protagonists' initiatory experiences. My application of the dichotomy self-other to the selected books provides a number of polarized positions such as civilization-wilderness, white-native, male-female, and conscious-unconscious, polarities through which the different discursive levels of the texts are generated. Arguably, the formulaic character of the journeys into the unknown allows the stories to signify on various levels, thus inviting both psychological and ideological readings of the texts. It is primarily through a recycling of narrative conventions that Houston and Hughes invest their work with significance. By focusing on the structural and thematic similarities of adventure romance, my examination attempts to elucidate the parallels to mythic adventure and archaic rites of initiation with the aim of validating the role of the genre as symbolic representations of the process of maturation and vicarious rites of passage. The conclusions I draw have a bearing on much of Houston's and Hughes's fiction, on the genre of romance as a whole, and to some extent on the adjacent genres of fantasy and science fiction. /
Behandlar James Houston, Monica Hughes och Markoosie.
/ digitalisering@umu

Heroism in the matrix : an interpretation of Neo's heroism through the philosophies of Nietzsche and Chesterton

Reyburn, Duncan 23 July 2008 (has links)
This study explores the representation of the hero in Lawrence and Andrew Wachowski’s Matrix film trilogy, which comprises The Matrix (Wachowski, Wachowski&Silver 1999), Matrix Reloaded (Wachowski, Wachowski&Silver 2003a) and The Matrix Revolutions (Wachowski, Wachowski&Silver 2003b). Special reference is made to how Neo embodies a postmodern view of heroism. This implies an exploration into the relationship between Neo, the protagonist and hero in the Matrix trilogy, and his mythological predecessors, as well as the relationship between the representation of Neo and ideas concerning heroism. In order to further understand the nature of heroism in the Matrix trilogy, the ideas of two philosophers, namely Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) and Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936), are explored and compared. It is argued in this study that the heroism presented to the viewer by the Matrix trilogy can be interpreted as being representative of the meeting of the apparently contradictory ideas of these two philosophers. Both of these philosophers, though striving for a heroic ideal, arrived at vastly different conclusions. This study, whilst considering the nature of heroism in these two views, also seeks offer an examination of the relationship that Nietzsche’s and Chesterton’s writings have to one another. This examination is not an attempt to take sides with either of these philosophers, but merely to point out certain aspects of their two distinctive viewpoints as they relate to the films in question. This study especially seeks to investigate the claim that Neo is the embodiment of the Übermensch, the figure that most clearly resembles Nietzsche’s heroic ideal. Chesterton’s views of heroism are referred to in order to counter-balance and contextualise Nietzsche’s views on this. Mainly ethical aspects of the character and narrative of the hero are focused on in this study in order to show, firstly, that these more abstract aspects are implicit in the representation of the hero in the Matrix trilogy, and secondly, that the hero belongs to a moral taxonomy. The final aim of this study is to present a coherent view of the many facets of heroism that incorporates an assessment of how philosophy, ideology and semiology underpin the visual. / Dissertation (MA (Visual Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Visual Arts / unrestricted

Johansson, Daniel January 2021 (has links)
This study has conducted an analysis of how the monomyth has appeared in the fantasy story Diamond sword wooden sword part 1 and 2 by Nick Perumov. The study has confirmed that the story structure of the monomyth can be detected within several different characters progression. The study does not claim that all of the different stages within the monomyth can be identified within one single characters, but rather that there are several different characters that reinvents the world and the community. Speculations about why the authors story structure follows a ”divided” version of the hero’s journey are presented. The study also conducts an analysis of Perumovs construction of the society, male characters and female characters, which showed no distinct division in the construction of the two genders within the story. The construction of the society is discussed in light of the authors national upbringing, in this case the former Soviet Union, and briefly how the conflict in the world of Melin could be inspired by the Bolshevik revolution in Russia.

"Stick vs. Rope. Gun vs. Strand." : The Monomyth and the Hero as Warrior in Kojima Productions' 2019 Video Game Death Stranding / "Pinne vs. Rep. Pistol vs. Tråd." : Monomyten och Hjälten som Krigare i Kojima Productions 2019 Videospel Death Stranding

Näsling, Beatrice January 2022 (has links)
Released in 2019, the video game Death Stranding follows the monomythic structure described by Joseph Campbell in his 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The journey begins with the protagonist, Sam “Porter” Bridges, reluctantly accepting his calls to adventure, and, as he begins to move west, he receives supernatural aid from an increasing number of helpers he encounters along the way. Crossing the thresh-old, into the world of danger and adventure, has him meeting the threshold guardian Higgs, the primary antagonist of the game. During this first stage, the player of the game learns how to control Sam’s movements and how to navigate this world to-gether with the Bridge Baby known as Lou, who helps Sam on his journey. The second stage of the journey has Sam moving through a road of trials, overcoming both the physical obstacles of the terrain and the emotional obstacles of the people he helps along the way. He is at one point tempted to adopt the Bridge Baby Lou, his primary helper, but resists said temptation and continues on his jour-ney, until he is finally reunited with his sister, Amelie, who is threatening to end hu-manity in an extinction event. The lessons he has learnt on his journey – to focus on helping others and only using violence when the situation calls for it – leads him to his apotheosis, which is the realization of the value of other people and the relation-ships between them. With this realization, and Sam’s physical manifestation of it in his embracing of Amelie, convinces her that humanity deserves to live to die another day, and so the world is saved from falling into ruin. The third stage of Sam’s journey has him struggling to return home, aided at long last by the help of the friends he made on his journey. Sam, however, is uninter-ested in the world he helped save, and aims to return to his life of solitude. Upon his atonement with his father, however, he resolves this internal conflict and he is now free to live life as he wishes – as a father to the now freed baby Lou. The use of game mechanics in Death Stranding ultimately provides the player with alternatives to violence, giving way to a narrative that can contain as-pects of the monomythic hero that are not exclusively related to the typical warrior hero seen in most action games. Instead, the game frames the tools of the warrior as the stepping-stone to the hero as lover, who uses more peaceful means to achieve their goals. This exemplifies the potential of the video game medium as a platform for the monomyth, and how games could come to encompass a wider variety of he-roic figures than those currently available. The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
