Structural brain imaging and cognitive function in individuals at high familial risk of mood disorders

Papmeyer, Martina January 2015 (has links)
Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are characterised by a fundamental disturbance of mood, with strong support for overlapping causal pathways. Structural brain and neurocognitive abnormalities have been associated with mood disorders, but it is unknown whether these reflect early adverse effects predisposing to mood disorders or emerge as a consequence of illness onset. The Bipolar Family Study is well-suited to examine the origin of structural brain and neuropsychological abnormalities in mood disorders further. The volumes of subcortical brain regions, cortical thickness and surface area measures of frontal and temporal regions of interest and neuropsychological performance over a two-year time interval was compared at baseline and longitudinally between three groups: young individuals at high risk of mood disorders who subsequently developed MDD during the follow-up period (HR-MDD), individuals at high risk of mood disorders who remained well (HR-well), and healthy control subjects (HC). The longitudinal analysis of cortical thickness revealed significant group effects for the right parahippocampal and right fusiform gyrus. Cortical thickness in both of these brain regions across the two time points was reduced in both high-risk groups relative to controls, with the HR-MDD group displaying a thinner parahippocampus gyrus than the HR-well group. Moreover, a significant interaction effect was observed for the left inferior frontal and left precentral gyrus. The HR-well subjects had progressive thickness reductions in these brain regions relative to controls, while the HR-MDD group showed cortical thickening of these areas. Finally, longitudinal analyses of neuropsychological performance revealed a significant group effect for long delay verbal memory and extradimensional set-shifting performance. Reduced neurocognitive performance during both tasks across the two time points was found in the HR-well group relative to controls, with the HR-MDD group displaying decreased extradimensional set-shifting abilities as compared to the HC group only. These findings indicate, that reduced left parahippocampal and fusiform thickness constitute a familial trait marker for vulnerability to mood disorders and may thus form potential neuroanatomic endophenotypes. Particularly strong thickness reductions of the parahippocampal gyrus appear be linked to an onset of MDD. Moreover, progressive thickness reductions in the left inferior frontal and precentral gyrus in early adulthood form a familial trait marker for vulnerability to mood disorders, potentially reflecting early neurodegenerative processes. By contrast, an absence of cortical thinning of these brain regions in early adulthood appears to be linked to the onset of MDD, potentially reflecting a lack or delay of normal synaptic pruning processes. Reduced long delay verbal memory and extradimensional set-shifting performance across time constitute a familial trait marker for vulnerability to mood disorders, likely representing disturbances of normal brain development predisposing to illness. These findings advance our understanding of the origin of structural brain and neurocognitive abnormalities in mood disorders.

Modotemporální funkce paradigmatu hablaba v současné španělštině / Modal/temporal functions of paradigm hablaba in contemporary Spanish

Vinarčíková, Jana January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to introduce modotemporal functions of paradigm hablaba in Spanish. In the theoretical part, we define basic concepts related to this theme and the basic functions of paradigm hablaba. Then we describe functions that are less typical for the given paradigm. We designate these functions as modal meanings and we pay most attention to them. We describe them mainly from the semantic point of view and we also introduce different kinds of theories, which try to explain these meanings. In the practical part, using parallel corpus InterCorp, we analyze the meanings of the paradigm hablaba in the selected occurrences and we introduce the examples of some sentences proving the statements from the theoretical part of the thesis. Key words: verbal paradigm, imperfect tense, modal meanings, Spanish, corpus, InterCorp

Establishing Foundational Data on the Mental Health Functioning, Stress, Mood, Self-Regulation Capacity, and Perceptions of Coaching Climate of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Student-Athletes

Van Slingerland, Krista January 2016 (has links)
Mental health has become increasingly important on post-secondary campuses across Canada, as the majority of university students represent the cohort of the Canadian populace that is most vulnerable to mental illness, substance abuse, and suicide. Evidence suggests that student-athletes, a visible and diverse sub-population of university students, are at equal risk of experiencing a mental illness (Reardon & Factor, 2010), but could be even more vulnerable to mental health challenges than their non-athlete peers (Neal et al., 2013; Watson & Kissinger, 2007), given the additional demands and pressures that they face. Problematic though, is that the culture of athletics and prevailing stigma surrounding mental illness can lead student-athletes to overreport their well-being and deny distress (Steiner, Denny, & Stemmle, 2010), as well as underutilize the mental health services available to them on campus (Lopez & Levy, 2013). Although researchers have investigated the mental health of American college students (e.g., Eklund, Dowdy, Jones, & Furlong, 2011) and attempted to understand the vulnerability of National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) student-athletes to specific mental illnesses (e.g., eating disorders and substance abuse, Reardon & Factor, 2010), no study to date has investigated the mental health of student-athletes competing in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), particularly not using a holistic lense. As such, the overall purpose of the present study was to provide foundational data relating to Canadian student-athletes’ mental health functioning and other relevant indices such as their stress levels, mood, capacity to self-regulate, and perceptions of coaching climate. The first objective was to understand (a) the level and prevalence of mental health functioning (MHF) of student-athletes competing in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) system at two different time points in their academic year (Fall = Time 1, Winter = Time 2) and (b) whether significant differences existed in their levels of MHF (emotional, social, and psychological well-being) between Time 1 and Time 2 and based on gender, alcohol use, living situation, year of study, and type of sport. Results indicated that the student-athletes from 30 different Canadian universities experienced moderate to high levels of MHF at both time points, including those who reported a previous mental illness diagnosis. Furthermore, there was a higher prevalence of flourishing compared to languishing student-athletes at both time points. Repeated measures MANOVA tests indicated that student-athletes’ MHF did not significantly differ across time based on their gender, alcohol use, living situation, year of study, and/or type of sport. However, when a 5-way MANOVA test was conducted with the larger sample Time 1 data to have more statistical power, results revealed a significant main effect of gender, suggesting that women had significantly lower levels of social well-being than men during the first part of the academic/athletic year (see Article 1). The second objective was to examine relationships between variables that could potentially influence the MHF of CIS student-athletes, namely, their stress, mood, self-regulation capacity, and perceptions of the coaching climate. A path analysis revealed that the student-athletes’ MHF was significantly impacted by the frequency of their maladaptive reactions to stressors, mood states, capability to self-regulate, and the climate fostered by coaches. The third aim was to determine if changes in student-athletes’ self-regulation capacity over the academic/athletic year were related to changes in the other variables of interest. A t-test was first run to establish whether there was a change in their self-regulation capacity from Time 1 to Time 2, however, their levels remained steady over these time points. A subsequent path analysis showed that change scores in self-regulation capacity were not significantly related to change scores in MHF, stress, mood, and perceptions of coaching climate (see Article 2). The hope is that the results of this study may inform the strategic directions of mental health promotion and maintenance programming designed for CIS student-athletes in the future.

Interaction entre le temps, l'aspect et le mode dans les phrases complexes en mandarin moderne / Interaction between tense, aspect and mood in complex sentences in modern Mandarin

Chuang, Yuan-Ting 22 January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation is a corpus-based study of the tense, aspect and mood (TAM) and the interaction between these three categories in complex sentences in modern Mandarin Chinese. It aims to answer three questions related to the interpretation of temporality in Mandarin: (i) How temporal, aspectual and modal categories are marked and how they interact in complex sentences? ; (ii) What are the differences between the interactions of TAM in complex sentences and those in simple sentences? ; (iii) How is temporal sequence expressed in Mandarin? The temporal theory of Comrie (1985) and the aspectual model developed by Tournadre (2004) will be used as the theoretical framework to analyze the data. In the first part, we first introduce the concepts and theories of TAM used in general linguistics. Then we discuss the linguistic means used in Mandarin to convey temporal, aspectual and modal concepts, and the functioning of these three categories in simple sentences in order to compare it with the functioning in complex sentences. The second part is devoted to the analysis the interaction of TAM categories in various types of complex sentences which include those in subordinate clauses and verbal construction in series.

Todos foram inicialmente avaliados pelo instrumento M.I.N.I. Foram feitas análises estatísticas utilizando os programas o Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows e o Statistical Analysis System (SAS) for Windows. There are many theories about the role of personality in affective disorders. To study the personality profiles of these patients can contribute to evidence important specificities as well to ensuring more efficacious strategies for the treatment adopted in the clinical context. Objective: The study aimed to assess and compare the personality traits and quality of life of individuals with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, depression and a healthy control group, and to identify whether there are differences in personality traits of patients with and without suicide attempts. Methods: The sample was composed of 90 individuals, 30 with bipolar disorder, 30 with depression and 30 psychiatrically-healthy subjects. They were assessed using the M.I.N.I. Plus to confirm or to exclude possible mental disorders. Two scales were used to assess depressive and manic symptoms at the time of the evaluation: the Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale and the Young Mania Rating Scale. To evaluate personality was used the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), it is an instrument that was developed as a measure of the maladaptive personality trait proposed by the alternative model for Personality Disorders, included within Section III of the DSM-5. Quality of life was assessed using the test Whoqol-Bref. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS Statistical Package and SAS (Statistical Analysis System). Results: The domain Detachment showed differences among the three groups, patients with depression present the highest scores in this domain. Patients with mood disorders presented significantly higher scores in the domains of Negative Affectivity, Disinhibition and Psychoticism when compared to the control subjects. In relation to Antagonism, the bipolar patients stood out from the rest with their high scores. An increase in the domain Disinhibition was shown to increase the chances of an individual having a mood disorder and the increase in the trait Anhedonia raises the chances of depression. Patients with previous suicide attempts presented higher scores in the dimension Detachment and in the traits Anhedonia, Depressivity, Hostility and Impulsivity. In relation to the quality of life, the healthy control presented significantly higher scores when compared to patients in all domains. Negative correlation between the domains Detachment and Negative Affectivity and general quality of life were found in the patients with mood disorders. Conclusions: Patients with mood disorders presented different personality profile when compared to healthy control group and the evaluated traits were higher in the sample of patients. The depressive group, not only exhibited higher scores in the majority facets, but also showed worse results in quality of life and more suicide attempts. These variables presented significant association with some personality domains assessed / Mestrado / Ciencias Biomedicas / Mestra em Ciências Médicas

Treinamento psicológico e sua influência nos estados de humor e desempenho técnico de atletas de basquetebol / Psychological training and it\'s influence on mood states and technical performance in basketball players

Silvia Regina Deschamps 07 March 2008 (has links)
A. / The purposes of this study were to identify the most frequent psychological types among a group of high level athletes and to verify the influence of psychological training in mood states and technical performance of those athletes. The sample were composed by 17 high level basketball players, competing for two teams at Regional Championship in the State of São Paulo, in 2007. Each team played six games at this tournament. The teams were divided in two groups: Team A (experimental group with psychological training program n=9) and Team B (control group without psychological training program n=8). Both teams answered the following inventories: QUATI (for the identification the psychological types - just one month before competition); BRAMS (Brazilian version of POMS in four different moments: one month and one week before competition and before first and third games during competition). The teams were also assessed by a Technical Efficienfy Index (EFI - adopted by Brazilian Basketball Confederation) during all games. Data analysis were made using ANOVA and Spearman Rank Correlation. The Psychological Trainning Program was based on SUINN (1988). The results showed a predominance of psychological type thought in team A, while psychological types sensation and intuition were predominant in team B. In both teams the functions introversion and extroversion were present at the same level. Concerning mood states, team A presented all negative factors (tension, depression, anger, confusion and fatigue) bellow percentile 50 in moments 3 and 4 and above this percentile in moments 1 and 2. The positive factor vigor was above percentile 50 all time long. In team B, the negative mood states were above percentile 50 all over the competition, except factor tension in moments 2, 3 and 4. The factor vigor presented the same level as team A. There wasn´t significative correlation between each mood state and technical performance index for both teams during the games, except for team B for the factor confusion and EFI at third game. Despite of brief duration of realized work it is possible to consider that the psychological training had your contribution in levels of mood states improvement the athletes and there wasn´t significative correlation between each mood state and technical performance index for team A

Approche intégrative des facteurs biologiques et psychologiques associés au pronostic des troubles de l'humeur / Integrative approach of biological and psychological factors associated to the prognosis of mood disorders

Consoloni, Julia-Lou 19 December 2017 (has links)
Mood disorders are frequent and heterogeneous psychiatric illnesses associated to a huge functional, social and economic burden. Different factors such as a higher risk of suicide, the higher frequency of psychiatric and somatic comorbidities are worsening the prognosis of these diseases. Within a preventive approach, it is essential to identify biological, psychological or environmental factors that might influence or predict such prognosis. This thesis focused on major elements of the prognosis of the two main mood disorders: major depression and bipolar disorder. Firstly, using a candidate-gene approach, we have tried to identify a biomarker of suicide risk in patients with a major depressive episode. We have found that SLC6A4 (gene coding for the serotonin transporter protein) mRNA expression levels extracted from the peripheral blood was able to predict the worsening of suicidal ideation in a 30 weeks follow-up. Secondly, we explored the clinical and neuropsychological factors associated to medication adherence in euthymic bipolar patients. The results of our study highlighted that bipolar patients who experienced a higher number of adverse side effects and a smaller number of previous hospitalizations are more likely to be low adherent. Moreover, in the older bipolar patients only, poor executive functioning predicted low adherence.

The Effects of Exposure to Body Positive and Fitspiration Instagram Content on Undergraduate Women’s State Body Satisfaction, State Body Appreciation, and Mood

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: The promulgation of the thin-ideal is associated with bulimia, dieting, supplement use, negative affect, and body dissatisfaction. “Fitspiration” was created as an “antidote” to the thin-ideal through the promotion of healthy eating and exercise; however, research indicates Fitspiration continues to promote the thin-ideal with similarly detrimental outcomes. Recently, research has shifted from a focus on body disturbance to concepts of positive body image (Halliwell, 2015), often researched through the concept of body appreciation. While the research is limited, a few studies have shown increases in body appreciation and mood after viewing body positive images. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to experimentally examine the impact of exposure to body positive and Fitspiration Instagram images on the body satisfaction, body appreciation, and mood of undergraduate women. Participants were 98 female undergraduate students (18-29 years old) currently attending Arizona State University. Participants were randomly assigned to view Fitspiration, Body Positive, or appearance neutral Instagram images. Dependent variables of state body appreciation, state body dissatisfaction, and state mood were measured using Visual Analogue Scales. Trait thin-ideal internalization, trait social comparison, and body mass index (BMI) were included as covariates. Qualitative short-answer questions were included as an exploratory aim. A one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to examine group differences in post-test scores followed by post-hoc analyses using the Bonferroni correction when significant. After controlling for baseline score, trait thin-ideal internalization, trait social comparison, and BMI, post-test body appreciation scores within Fitspiration condition were significantly lower than the control (MD= 9.818, SE=3.743, p=.031) and Body Positive condition (MD=9.372, SE=3.492, p=0.26). After controlling for baseline score, trait thin-ideal internalization, trait social comparison, and BMI, the Body Positive condition demonstrated significantly higher post-test body satisfaction scores than the control (MD= 11.134, SE=3.093, p=.002) and Fitspiration condition (MD=17.312, SE=3.092, p=<.001). After controlling for baseline scores, mean post-test positive mood scores within the Fitspiration group were significantly lower than the Body Positive condition (MD=-0.378, SE=.135, p=.019). There were no differences in post-test negative mood across conditions. Findings suggest short-term exposure to body positive images may improve body appreciation, Body Positivity, and positive mood among undergraduate females. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Exercise and Wellness 2020

Rivoire, Isabelle, Ängvig, Rebecka January 2020 (has links)
Bakgrund: Ungdomar i Sverige mår allt sämre psykiskt. / Background: Mental health problems are increasing for adolescents in Sweden. Few of them seek help from health care when they are feeling unwell. Children and adolescents psychiatry in Sweden have excessive waiting lists for help seekers and therefore few who require help are getting it directly when needed. Adolescents are at risk of worsening their mental health status without available professional help. An mhealth app have the potential to be an alternative for adolescents with mental health problems before they have a chance to receive professional help. Objective: The aim of the study is to highlight how adolescents express their mood in the ”Här ligger jag…” app. Methods: This study has a qualitative approach to the field. The collection of data was carried out during one week in March of 2020 with consent from the users. A total of 414 posts was collected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The result consist of five categories with expressions of feelings. It shows that adolescents have a need to express themselves about anxiety, depressive symptoms, loneliness, hatred and well-being. Conclusions: Nurses with knowledge about adolescents needs to express their mood could guide them to find mhealth apps which are available 24/7. Talking about mental health may be perceived as a difficult topic to discuss and therefore it may be easier in an anonymous forum.
