Le but de ce travail de recherche est de cerner et de circonscrire un certain esprit des temps pour observer ses manifestations dans l'art actuel. J'ai d'abord voulu rendre compte des valeurs qui marquent l'époque que nous vivons, aux plans philosophique et esthétique. Le champ de la connaissance a fait des bonds importants depuis la Renaissance et le Siècle des Lumières. La modernité a élargi les moyens d'analyse et de synthèse des phénomènes du monde. Récemment, la postmodernité semble cependant mettre en doute les expérimentations modernistes lorsqu'elle propose la multiplication des instruments de connaissance. En deuxième étape, j'ai voulu analyser l'esprit qui sous-tend le travail sculptural du post-formalisme américain et par la suite brosser un tableau historique de la situation de la sculpture au Québec. Méthodes par blocs adaptées aux matrices structurées et au calcul du pseudo-inverse / Block methods adapted to structured matrices and calculation of the pseudo-inverse

Nous nous intéressons dans cette thèse, à l'étude de certaines méthodes numériques de type krylov dans le cas symplectique, en utilisant la technique de blocs. Ces méthodes, contrairement aux méthodes classiques, permettent à la matrice réduite de conserver la structure Hamiltonienne ou anti-Hamiltonienne ou encore symplectique d'une matrice donnée. Parmi ces méthodes, nous nous sommes intéressés à la méthodes d'Arnoldi symplectique par bloc que nous appelons aussi bloc J-Arnoldi. Notre but essentiel est d’étudier cette méthode de façon théorique et numérique, sur la nouvelle structure du K-module libre ℝ²nx²s avec K = ℝ²sx²s où s ≪ n désigne la taille des blocs utilisés. Un deuxième objectif est de chercher une approximation de l'epérateur exp(A)V, nous étudions en particulier le cas où A est une matrice réelle Hamiltonnienne et anti-symétrique de taille 2n x 2n et V est une matrice rectangulaire ortho-symplectique de taille 2n x 2s sur le sous-espace de Krylov par blocs Km(A,V) = blockspan {V,AV,...,Am-1V}, en conservant la structure de la matrice V. Cette approximation permet de résoudre plusieurs problèmes issus des équations différentielles dépendants d'un paramètre (EDP) et des systèmes d'équations différentielles ordinaires (EDO). Nous présentons également une méthode de Lanczos symplectique par bloc, que nous nommons bloc J-Lanczos. Cette méthode permet de réduire une matrice structurée sous la forme J-tridiagonale par bloc. Nous proposons des algorithmes basés sur deux types de normalisation : la factorisation S R et la factorisation Rj R. Dans une dernière partie, nous proposons un algorithme qui généralise la méthode de Greville afin de déterminer la pseudo inverse de Moore-Penros bloc de lignes par bloc de lignes d'une matrice rectangulaire de manière itérative. Nous proposons un algorithme qui utilise la technique de bloc. Pour toutes ces méthodes, nous proposons des exemples numériques qui montrent l'efficacité de nos approches. / We study, in this thesis, some numerical block Krylov subspace methods. These methods preserve geometric properties of the reduced matrix (Hamiltonian or skew-Hamiltonian or symplectic). Among these methods, we interest on block symplectic Arnoldi, namely block J-Arnoldi algorithm. Our main goal is to study this method, theoretically and numerically, on using ℝ²nx²s as free module on (ℝ²sx²s, +, x) with s ≪ n the size of block. A second aim is to study the approximation of exp (A)V, where A is a real Hamiltonian and skew-symmetric matrix of size 2n x 2n and V a rectangular matrix of size 2n x 2s on block Krylov subspace Km (A, V) = blockspan {V, AV,...Am-1V}, that preserve the structure of the initial matrix. this approximation is required in many applications. For example, this approximation is important for solving systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) or time-dependant partial differential equations (PDEs). We also present a block symplectic structure preserving Lanczos method, namely block J-Lanczos algorithm. Our approach is based on a block J-tridiagonalization procedure of a structured matrix. We propose algorithms based on two normalization methods : the SR factorization and the Rj R factorization. In the last part, we proposea generalized algorithm of Greville method for iteratively computing the Moore-Penrose inverse of a rectangular real matrix. our purpose is to give a block version of Greville's method. All methods are completed by many numerical examples.

Heterogeneous 3D Integration and Packaging Technologies for Nano-Electromechanical Systems

Three-dimensional (3D) integration of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) with integrated circuits (ICs) is an emerging technology that offers great advantages over conventional state-of-the-art microelectronics. MEMS and NEMS are most commonly employed as sensor and actuator components that enable a vast array of functionalities typically not attainable by conventional ICs. 3D integration of NEMS and ICs also contributes to more compact device footprints, improves device performance, and lowers the power consumption. Therefore, 3D integration of NEMS and ICs has been proposed as a promising solution to the end of Moore’s law, i.e. the slowing advancement of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology.In this Ph.D. thesis, I propose a comprehensive fabrication methodology for heterogeneous 3D integration of NEM devices directly on top of CMOS circuits. In heterogeneous integration, the NEMS and CMOS components are fully or partially fabricated on separate substrates and subsequently merged into one. This enables process flexibility for the NEMS components while maintaining full compatibility with standard CMOS fabrication. The first part of this thesis presents an adhesive wafer bonding method using ultra-thin intermediate bonding layers which is utilized for merging the NEMS components with the CMOS substrate. In the second part, a novel NEM switch concept is introduced and the performance of CMOS-integrated NEM switch circuits for logic and computation applications is discussed. The third part examines two different packaging approaches for integrated MEMS and NEMS devices with either hermetic vacuum cavities or low-cost glass lids for optical applications. Finally, a novel fabrication approach for through silicon vias (TSVs) by magnetic assembly is presented, which is used to establish an electrical connection from the packaged devices to the outside world. / Tredimensionell (3D) integration av mikro- och nano-elektromekaniska system (MEMS/NEMS) med integrerade kretsar (ICs) är en ny teknik som erbjuder stora fördelar jämfört med konventionell mikroelektronik. MEMS och NEMS används oftast som sensorer och aktuatorer då de möjliggör många funktioner som inte kan uppnås med vanliga ICs.3D-integration av NEMS och ICs bidrar även till mindre dimensioner, ökade prestanda och mindre energiförbrukning av elektriska komponenter. Den nuvarande tekniken för complementary metal-oxide-semicondictor (CMOS) närmar sig de fundamentala gränserna vilket drastiskt begränsar utvecklingsmöjligheten för mikroelektronik och medför slutet på Moores lag. Därför har 3D-integration identifierats som en lovande teknik för att kunna driva vidare utvecklingen för framtidens elektriska komponenter.I denna avhandling framläggs en omfattande fabrikationsmetodik för heterogen 3D-integration av NEMS ovanpå CMOS-kretsar. Heterogen integration betyder att både NEMS- och CMOS-komponenter byggs på separata substrat för att sedan förenas på ett enda substrat. Denna teknik tillåter full processfrihet för tillverkning av NEMS-komponenter och garanterar kompatibilitet med standardiserade CMOS-fabrikationsprocesser.I den första delen av avhandlingen beskrivs en metod för att sammanfoga två halvledarskivor med en extremt tunn adhesiv polymer. Denna metod demonstreras för 3D-integration av NEMS- och CMOS-komponenter. Den andra delen introducerar ett nytt koncept för NEM-switchar och dess användning i NEM-switch-baserade mikrodatorchip. Den tredje delen presenterar två olika inkapslingsmetoder för MEMS och NEMS. Den ena metoden fokuserar på hermetisk vakuuminkapsling medan den andra metoden beskriver en lågkostnadsstrategi för inkapsling av optiska komponenter. Une des questions centrales de la métaéthique est celle de savoir si les propriétés morales sont des propriétés naturelles ou non-naturelles. Ce mémoire fait valoir que nous ferions bien de remettre en question une constellation d’arguments en faveur du non-naturalisme moral : l’argument de la question ouverte, l’intuition normative et l’argument du gouffre. L’influent argument de la question ouverte de Moore, d’abord, ne soutient le non-naturalisme que s’il commet une pétition de principe. L’intuition normative commet ou bien le sophisme d’inférer sur la base de sa différence spécifique qu’une chose n’appartient pas à un genre donné, ou bien sous-estime la panoplie de propriétés naturelles qui possèdent les caractéristiques censées être distinctives des propriétés morales et normatives. L’argument du gouffre, quant à lui, sous-estime l’ubiquité du fossé logique et conceptuel censé marquer une discontinuité métaphysique profonde entre les domaines normatif et naturel. / One of the burning questions among metaethical realists is whether moral facts and properties are natural or non-natural. In this thesis, I argue that we should treat a family of arguments for non-naturalism with considerable scepticism: the Open Question Argument, the Normative Intuition, and the argument from the Is-Ought Gap. Moore’s famous Open Question Argument only supports moral non-naturalism if it begs the question against the modest (non-reductionist) naturalist. As for the Normative Intuition, it either commits the fallacy of inferring on the basis of a thing’s specific difference that it does not belong to the genus it putatively belongs to, or it underestimates the breadth of natural properties that possess the features which non-naturalists allege are distinctive of moral and normative properties. The argument from the Is-Ought Gap, for its part, underestimates the ubiquity of the logical and conceptual gap that allegedly marks a deep metaphysical discontinuity between the normative and natural domains.

The girls' guide to power: romancing the Cold War

This dissertation uses a feminist cultural materialist approach that draws on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Luce Irigaray to examine the neglected genre of postwar-Cold War American teen girl romance novels, which I call female junior novels. Written between 1942 and the late 1960s by authors such as Betty Cavanna, Maureen Daly, Anne Emery, Rosamond du Jardin, and Mary Stolz, these texts create a kind of hieroglyphic world, where possession of the right dress or the proper seat in the malt shop determines a girls place within an entrenched adolescent social hierarchy. Thus in the first chapter, I argue that girls adherence to consumer-based social codes ultimately constructs a semi-autonomous female society, still under the umbrella of patriarchy, but based on female desire and possessing its own logic. This adolescent female society parallels the network of women who produced (authors, illustrators, editors) and distributed (librarians, critics) these texts to teenaged girls. Invisible because of its all-female composition, middlebrow status, and feminine control, yet self-governing for the same reasons, the network established a semi-autonomous space into which left-leaning authors could safely (if subtly) critique American social and foreign policies during the Cold War. Chapter Two examines the first generation of the network, including Anne Carroll Moore, Bertha Mahony, Louise Seaman, and May Massee, who helped to create the childrens publishing industry in America, while Chapter Three investigates the second generation, including Mabel Williams, Margaret Scoggin, and Ursula Nordstrom, who entrenched childrens and adolescent literature in publishing houses and library services. In Chapter Four I explore the shifting concept of what constitutes quality within these texts, with an emphasis on the role of authors, illustrators, and critics in defining such value. Chapter Five investigates the use of female junior novels within the classroom, paying particular attention to the role of bibliotherapy, in which these texts were used to help teenagers solve their developmental tasks, as suggested by psychologist Robert J. Havighurst. A brief conclusion discusses the fall of the female junior novels and their network, while a coda addresses the republication of these texts today through the nostalgia press.
