Beyond Human Displacement(s) : Spacetime Stories of Agency in Parable of the Sower by Octavia ButlerLange, Bianca January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis project, the aim is to explore displacements beyond the familiar usage in migration studies associated with ’human’ by using a new materialist/s understanding ofontology and agency. This approach opens the possibility to move beyond the understanding of displacements as referring only to human agency. The fictionalised story, Parable of theSower, is used in the thesis as the real-world ontological world-building storytelling and the questions that flow from the aim of this thesis is used as a guiding navigator within the mainstory to see what other stories emerges; The Earthseed Story, The More-Than-Human Storiesand The Human Stories. Displacement(s) beyond human agency from a new materialist outlook show the complexity and challenges of being interconnected and codependent in a world containing multiple stories that move in and out of spacetime refuturing. This occursboth as dystopia and utopia, as agency is in-the-making and ongoing reshaping of territorialization and deterritorialization making all-the-flesh moving boundaries of being displaced and in-place in a belongings-non-belongings continuum. For future research,multispecies displacement(s) is discussed as ongoing processes of both; dystopian and utopian storytelling, and the possibilities for refuturing shared worlds.

This diploma thesis traces the changing human, animal and technology assemblage after the recent emergence of wolf packs in Broumov region. As the return of wolves coincides with ecological transformations gaining in strength, the central research focus are the possibilities - and impossibilities - of local multispecies coexistence in the conditions of Anthropocene. The research draws upon methods of multispecies ethnography, building on the literature that examines the ontological aspects of multispecies coexistence, including primarily the work of Donna Haraway, Eduardo Kohn, Annemarie Mol, Anna Tsing and Rane Willerslev. The thesis analyzes several modes of situated multispecies coexistence which have been reconfigured or made possible by the return of wolves: administrative and sensual practice of shepherds, methods of mimetic empathy of wolf trackers, emergence of new actors interfering with local events (satellites, subsidy programmes, drought) and the translation of processes on pastures into politically engaged activities of local farmers. The thesis develops the employed concepts in such a way that they enable analyzing the situation in Broumov region as situated making of more-than-human sociality. Tasting Bubbling Naturecultures and Touching M/other’s Hands : Aesthesias of Microbial Touch PointsFähndrich, Laura January 2020 (has links)
This project explores co-being and interdependencies between human and more-than-human, the microbes, through the medium of fermentation and the (hidden) communities this practice embodies. Therewith not only resisting commodification and alienation from our food but facing our very own identity, and the human-made construct of human exceptionalism and detachment of nature and culture. The cells in ’our’ human body are outnumbered by the cells of other microorganisms. They even actively influence many of the bodily functions associated with the concept of ’self‘ (our brain, immune system and genome).1 Considering this, what does it even mean to be human? What does it mean to be me, If not cherishing and embracing the more-than-human, more-than-one-culture collective? The Korean word 손맛 ’son-mat’/ ’hand-taste’ refers to the inherited quality, love and care that went into preparing the (often associated with mother‘s) dish, something uniquely connected to the cook. While the microbes in sourdough can be linked to the baker‘s hand microbes, the baker‘s microbes have also shown to beaffected by the interaction with sourdough (Herman‘s (see picture to the right) microbial culture) with the scientific findings exposing our mutual interaction. This son-mat within fermentation I see as a symbolized touching point where our human realm and the microbial invisible microcosmos meet and become tangible. To emphasize this co-being, I work with our bodily senses, using design to bridge, making the insensible sensible, tangible, and audible. Staying curious and sprawling with my design approaches of creating narratives with the more-than-human, aimed to evoke questions and reflections of us and our culture. What happens when we share culture (human and microbial)? Through our hands, eating and digesting parts of others and becoming-with. To share culture means to see that humans and ’non-humans‘ are one. To taste that our culture is shared. And to feel that nature and culture are not two but one. Can you taste it?

Tuning into uncertainty : A material exploration of object detection through playRukanskaitė, Julija January 2021 (has links)
The ubiquitous yet opaque logic of machine learning complicates both the design process and end-use. Because of this, much of Interaction Design and HCI now focus on making this logic transparent through human-like explanations and tight control while disregarding other, non-normative human-AI interactions as technical failures. In this thesis I re-frame such interactions as generative for both material exploration and user experience in non-purpose-driven applications. By expanding on the notion of machine learning uncertainty with play, queering, and more-than human design, I try to understand them in a designerly way. This re-framing is followed by a material-centred Research through Design process that concludes with Object Detection Radio: a ludic device that sonifies Tensorflow.js Object Detection API’s prediction probabilities. The design process suggests ways of making machine learning uncertainty explicit in human-AI interaction. In addition, I propose play as an alternative way of relating to and understanding the agency of machine learning technology.

Clinical trials are used to determine the efficacy and safety of a medication prior to approval for commercial use and to influence the prescribing habits of clinicians. The lack of uniformity in the diagnostic thresholds used in clinical trials on osteoporosis makes it difficult to compare the results of these trials. The use of placebo, different anatomical sites, T-score cutoff points, and risk factors precludes any meaningful comparison being made between the outcomes of clinical trials. Finally, the lack of uniform reporting format makes it difficult to retrieve important information to compare one medication to another. Because the diagnostic thresholds used affect the outcomes of these trials, health care providers need to be aware of these criteria to determine whether the results of a particular clinical trial can be applied to a particular patient.

Memory in development and ruination : Tracing workers’ memories and futures on a transforming railway in Stockholm, SwedenAronsson, Viktor January 2023 (has links)
Research on post-industrial memory have recently brought to attention the role of workers’ collective memory in deindustrialised landscapes. However, the role of memory in continued and developed industries is a theme largely unexplored. Drawing on tangent research interests in absent-presences, spectrality, and more-than-representational theory, this thesis extends research on post-industrial memory by exploring collective memory in one such continued industry—the transformed and transforming commuter railway Roslagsbanan in Stockholm, Sweden. Through a case-study using autoethnography and mobile in-depth interviews with railway workers, the thesis shows how the past in representational and more-than-representational form provide affective encounters for workers in their everyday lives. Through encounters with remnants of the past, workers’ collective memory provides meaning to the present through materialities, stories, photographs, embodiments, places, and landscapes. However, as the landscape and workplace transform in what workers see as both development and ruination, the opportunity for memory to surface is challenged. With relevance for research on (post)industrial memory, the thesis shows how memory becomes an animating force in everyday work caught up in a liminality between development and ruination. Practiced in a continued industry, memory becomes a way to enliven the present.

Ce mémoire présente le travail de thèse réalisé auprès des laboratoires LAPLACE et SATIE ainsi que les services EDYNE3 et EDYYLIC d'AIRBUS OPERATIONS. Le sujet porte sur les problèmes CEM apparaissant dans les convertisseurs de puissance embarqués à bord des futurs avions plus électriques. Le manuscrit est composé de cinq parties. La première partie, d'introduction, traite de la problématique CEM avion, la deuxième de la modélisation des éléments de la chaine de conversion DC/AC étudiée. Le troisième est composé d'une étude comparative par simulation des différentes solutions. La quatrième partie traite de la réalisation de la solution choisie et enfin le cinquième et dernier chapitre de l'étude expérimentale de celle-ci. / The studies conducted during this thesis deals with conducted EMC problems of an inverter associated to its actuator. Accurate high frequency models of every element of the DC/AC converter and actuator have been realised from measures. Then a comparative study of different topologies of converters have been led from simulations in order to determine the best solution minimising EMC current. The selected inverter was realised and the experimental results were compared to simulations validating them. Finally, a comparison of EMC filters architecture led to choose a better solution in order to avoid the increasing of mass.

Le développement d’aéronefs « plus » voire « tout » électriques a pour conséquence la conception d’architectures électriques embarquées de plus en plus complexes entraînant une très nette augmentation du nombre de câbles électriques à déployer au sein des véhicules. Parmi les contraintes rencontrées lors des phases de définition et d’intégration des réseaux de câblages, les aspects de compatibilité électromagnétique et de gestion des échauffements thermiques deviennent de plus en plus critiques. Ainsi, ces travaux de thèse sont dédiés au développement d’une méthodologie permettant la prédiction d’une part, des courants induits par et sur les réseaux de câblages et d’autre part, de leur niveaux d’échauffement. En particulier, l’analyse bibliographique effectuée à cette occasion montre que les phénomènes électrostatiques (à la base de la théorie des lignes de transmission) et de conduction stationnaire de la chaleur sont strictement analogues, ce qui autorise une résolution simultanée de ces deux problèmes pour les réseaux de câblages considérés. Les présents travaux démontrent que le calcul des paramètres électriques primaires (p.u.l) du réseau et de la distribution de température dans le plan transverse peut se faire de manière totalement couplé à l’aide d’un schéma numérique basé sur la Méthode des Moments(MoM). Le choix de l’utilisation des équations intégrales pour la résolution de ce problème de potentiel se fonde sur plusieurs avantages tels qu’une utilisation optimisée des ressources de calcul et l’utilisation d’algorithmes efficaces de résolution, de surcroît naturellement parallélisables pour de futurs développements. Les outils de calculs thermiques développés dans le cadre de cette thèse, et qui ont vocation à être intégrés dans la suite logicielle CRIPTE de l’ONERA, ont fait l’objet d’une validation expérimentale pour plusieurs configurations de harnais électriques. Les comparaisons simulations-mesures présentent de bons accords bien que les expérimentations menées aient montré la difficulté d’obtenir précisément des valeurs du coefficient d’échange thermique,même dans des conditions parfaitement maîtrisées. Les travaux ouvrent enfin des perspectives nouvelles sur l’optimisation en terme de masse des réseaux de câblage (EWIS). / The on-going development of “more” or “all” electrical aircraft leads to the design of ever-complex embeddedelectrical networks, which causes a significant increase of electrical cables to be used within these innovativevehicles. Among the constraints encountered during the definition and integration phases of the network, thoserelated to the electromagnetic compatibility between equipment as well as the management of thermal heatingby Joule’s effect become more and more stringent. Thus, this thesis is dedicated to the development of anoriginal methodology enabling the prediction of both induced and crosstalk currents as well as the heating upstate in complex bundles of cables. Indeed, literature review explicitly shows that electrostatic and stationaryheat transfer phenomena are, from a mathematical standpoint, strictly the same which allows the simultaneouscomputation of these two problems for an arbitrary network. This research work demonstrates that the determinationof primary electrical parameters (per unit length) and the temperature distribution within a givencross-section can be handled with the numerical Method Of Moment (MoM). This choice is motivated by theseveral inherent advantages of the method like an optimized use of the computer resource and the naturalparallelization of the algorithms. The developed numerical tools, intended to be fully integrated in the in-housesoftware suite CRIPTE, has been validated during an experimental campaign that has involved several typesof bundles. Although the comparisons between experimental and simulated results comply with each other,experiments reveal the hard task of getting a precise estimation of the heat transfer coefficients, even in awell-controlled environment. Finally, these works open new and very promising perspectives for future EWIS(Electrical Wiring Interconnection System) in term of mass optimization.
