An estimation from wind direction, moss samples and registered air emissions

Rundqvist, Evelina January 2024 (has links)
The human species have used metals for a long time and with the human population increasing the use of metals also increase. Because of their composition, metals can stay in nature long after they were released. Since the 1960s a sampling of two mosses (Pleurozium schreberi and Hylocomium splendens) have been made all around Sweden to investigate heavy metals bound in moss. Every year manufactories must submit their emissions to their responsible authority. This study aims to investigate if it is possible to use moss samples, wind direction and manufactories registered air emissions to track the transportation and spread of the air emissions. The manufactories examined were Korstaverket, Kubikenborg Aluminium AB, SCA Ortviken and SCA Östrand. The heavy metals examined were cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg). Data for this study are based on public information and were collected from SMHI and Länsstyrelsen Västernorrland. The statistical method used was Wilcoxon-Mann- Whitney U- test. The result showed that the heavy metal content in moss samples have increased while the air emission from the manufactories have decreased. Therefore, the conclusion is that it is not possible to trace the registered air emissions of local industries using moss samples and wind direction, based on the collected data.

Setting the baseline for a rewetting project : The re-colonisation of Sphagnum mosses

Winberg, Isabella January 2024 (has links)
About 12% of earth’s peatlands have been drained for peat extraction or agriculture and turned peatlands into carbon sources with reduced biodiversity, water retention and downstream water quality. Rewetting is a strategy used to restore peatlands water table and peat forming vegetation, including Sphagnum spp. which are key species in facilitating water retention, peat- and carbon accumulation in bogs. Halmstad University and Sydvatten have been conducting a scientific study, including a one-year-baseline study on a drained bog in Halmstad, scheduled to be rewetted by ditch blocking. The collected data on bog vegetation in this thesis shall be used as baselines for the scientific study. The aim was to understand if rewetting increases the coverage of peat forming vegetation in drained bogs with the hypotheses that Sphagnum moss have higher degree of coverage in wet compared to drained bogs, and that the plant community in wet bogs are dominated by Sphagnum moss while the drained bog is dominated by brown moss. The estimated mean percent coverage of Sphagnum moss, brown moss (other Bryophytes), heather shrubs, sedges, and reeds was compared between the drained bog, scheduled to be rewetted to a wet bog where ditch clearing has not happened for the last 80 years. My result showed that brown mosses of woody species had a greater and dominant mean coverage at the drained bog, indicating a shift to forest vegetation following drainage. Reeds, sedges, and heathers showed no significant difference between sites. Sphagnum moss demonstrated a significantly higher mean coverage in the wet bog, dominating the vegetation. This reflects a typical bog succession, influenced by Sphagnum mosses capacity of outcompeting other plants. These findings support the hypothesis and indicate that within 80 years, there can be a shift to a peat forming-Sphagnum- dominated bog community in previously drained bogs, through ditch blocking.

New strategies for managing dollar spot and silvery-thread moss in creeping bentgrass putting greens

Thompson, Cole S. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Horticulture, Forestry, and Recreation Resources / Jack D. Fry / Dollar spot, caused by Sclerotinia homoeocarpa F.T. Bennett, and silvery-thread moss (Bryum argenteum Hedw.) are pests affecting creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) that typically require pesticide inputs. New strategies for pest management may reduce chemical inputs. The objectives of these 2009-2010 field studies were to evaluate: 1) creeping bentgrass cultivars for dollar spot susceptibility; 2) alternative chemical controls for silvery-thread moss; and 3) the response of silvery-thread moss to nitrogen (N) sources. During peak dollar spot development, ‘Declaration’, ‘A-4’, and ‘Crenshaw’ had 7.5, 139.4, and 288.9 infection centers m[superscript]-2 under fairway and 2.1, 27.2, and 106.9 infection centers m[superscript]-2 under putting green conditions, respectively. Two spring and two fall spot applications of sodium or potassium bicarbonate (45 g a.i. L[superscript]-1), premixed essential oil, and broadcast applications of carfentrazone-ethyl at 0.09 kg a.i. ha[superscript]-1 suppressed moss 39% to 55% compared to untreated in 2009. Spot sprays of sodium or potassium bicarbonate, and essential oil, were phytotoxic to creeping bentgrass and required up to 8 or 18 days, respectively, to return to acceptable quality. Fertilization with liquid urea (N at 16.3 kg ha[superscript]-1 biweekly, 210 kg ha[superscript]-1 annually) resulted in 147%, 150%, and 155% more moss than fertilization with IBDU, organic N, and granular urea, respectively, and 156% more moss compared to untreated. Fertilization with urea (liquid or granular) resulted in the best creeping bentgrass color. Averaged across the entire season, plots treated with organic N had unacceptable color in 2009. Nitrogen concentrations in moss tissue ranged from 0.4% to 1.0% and were always significantly lower than N concentrations observed in creeping bentgrass (1.1% to 2.1%), regardless of treatment. In 2010, moss treated with liquid urea had higher tissue N concentrations (1.0%) than untreated moss (0.5%) or that fertilized with IBDU (0.4%). In summary, use of dollar spot-resistant creeping bentgrass cultivars could reduce fungicide requirements. Bicarbonate and essential oil products can reduce moss severity at a similar level to carfentrazone-ethyl, but rates and/or application methods need to be optimized to avoid injury to creeping bentgrass. Applications of liquid urea enhanced moss coverage in creeping bentgrass compared to other N sources.

Occurrence and Implications of the N-Acylethanolamine Metabolic Pathway in Physcomitrella patens

Sante, Richard R. T. 01 May 2014 (has links)
N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) with C12-C18 acyl chain are ubiquitous in seed plants and play a role in mediating abscisic acid (ABA)-dependent or -independent responses to stress. In moss Physcomitrella patens, using selective lipidomics approach, we recently identified the occurrence of anandamide or N-arachidonylethanolamide (NAE 20:4) and its precursors that were previously not reported in plants. Occurrence of anandamide in moss provides us with a unique opportunity to address if early land plants retained NAE-mediated signaling mechanism that is akin to animals but not to vascular plants. It is hypothesized that a distinctive NAE profile and metabolic pathway occurs in P. patens. To this extent, putative genes that might be responsible for anandamide metabolic pathway were identified and their expression levels were determined for three developmental stages of moss. The NAE metabolite levels and transcript levels for putative genes were higher in protonema stage and anandamide showed higher growth inhibitory effects, chlorophyll reduction, and putative gene induction than NAE 12:0, compared to ABA, when applied exogenously.

"Goin' to Hell in a Handbasket": The Yeatsian Apocalypse and <em>No Country for Old Men</em>

Davis, Connor Race 01 July 2017 (has links)
On its surface, Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men appears to be a thoroughly grim and even fatalistic novel, but read in conjunction with W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming"—a work with which the novel has a number of intertextual connection—it becomes clear that there is a distinct optimism at the heart of the novel. Approaching McCarthy's novel as an intertext with Yeats' poem illuminates an apparent critique of eschatological panic present in No Country for Old Men, provided mainly through Sheriff Bell's reflections on the state of society.

Hult, Louise January 2013 (has links)
Thisis an experimental study of lipid residues within the field of laboratoryarcheology. Pottery was made in a time like manner and used to cook grain and Icelandmoss and exposed to an organized biodegradation experiment inside an incubatorfor later analyzes with the GC-MS-method. Tests were also taken from pottery, grain and Iceland moss that had not been exposed for a biodegrading attempt. The grain is a domesticated cereal and the Icelandic moss fungi-alga mix. Thetest results showed mostly saturated fatty acids, sterols and monoacylglycerolsof saturated fatty acids. Within the laboratory archeology, ergosterol has beensuggested as a possible biomarker for yeast and alcohol fermentation. TheIceland moss contains ergosterol and is therefore relevant for the study whenit can be compared to archeological pottery that contains ergosterol. Theresults didn’t show any traces of ergostrol with the biodegraded pottery, butlow traces of cholesterol witch probably is contaminations from the handlingwith the pottery.

Sunnhetskommisjonen i Moss 1860−1883, 1905−1906

Årvik, Marianne January 2013 (has links)

Todeschini, Bernardo January 2010 (has links)
Epidemiological surveillance is described as a set of procedures of collecting, processing and data analysis used for supporting the decision making process of animal and human health managers. The growing participation of private sector professionals on animal health issues has been widening the passive epidemiological surveillance, generating significant amounts of data. In this context, the National Program of Animal Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Control and Eradication – PNCEBT, promotes, amongst other strategies, the accreditation of private veterinarians to make diagnosis tests on bovine, increased significantly the amount of data on bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis. In the present research, a compilation of all data from diagnosis tests performed by accredited private veterinarians on behalf of PNCEBT in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in 2008 was made, which was analyzed through distinct statistics techniques, aiming at characterizing the demography and spatial patterns of occurrence, as well as to assess the frequencies of those diseases. Data from 63.226 individual tests performed in 5.012 farms on 332 municipalities were analyzed, after treatment by multiple imputation and outlier values diagnosis. It was possible to conclude that the majority of tests were from dairy related animals; economical reasons, such as bonus programs, were the main motivation for the farmers to perform tests on their properties. Higher frequencies for both diseases were found in dairy cattle, when compared to other purposes animals. Female presented higher frequencies for both diseases when compared to males. It was also observed that the frequency of tuberculosis increased with age, while for brucellosis the frequency was higher between 48 to 60 months-old animals. Spatial analysis evidenced higher frequencies of positive tuberculosis farms in the metropolitana and centro-oriental mesorregions, which had higher farm density per km². It was also verified that the distance by MVH to perform tests might be a limiting factor for them to occur, being 49.5% of the tests performed at maximum round-way distance of 50 km. The municipalities which had tests performed showed 67.5 times more chances of having a resident MVH. It was possible to conclude that an appropriate approach of surveillance data allows the making of relevant inferences, being feasible the establishment of monitoring and surveillance systems - MOSS. These systems could improve data quality and accessibility, allowing public and private managers to perform custom analysis to bring more efficiency and efficacy to animal health programs.
