'Training the soul in excellence' : musical theory and practice in Plato's dialogues, between ethics and aestheticsLynch, Tosca January 2013 (has links)
This thesis offers a technically informed examination of Plato's pervasive, though not innocent, use of musical theory, practice and musical concepts more generally within the ambitious ethical project outlined in many of his dialogues: fostering the ‘excellence' of the soul. Starting from Republic 3, Chapter 1 will focus specifically on music stricto sensu in order to assess Plato's interpretation of the basic ‘building blocks' of musical performances, creating a core repertoire of musical concepts that will prepare the way to analyse Plato's use of musical terms or categories in areas that, at first sight, do not appear to be immediately connected to this art, such as politics, ethics and psychology. Chapter 2 examines a selection of passages from Laws 2 concerning the concept of musical beauty and its role in ethical education, demonstrating how Plato's definition is far from being moralistic and, instead, pays close attention to the technical performative aspects of dramatic musical representations. Chapter 3 looks first at the harmonic characterisation of the two central virtues of the ideal city, sophrosyne and dikaiosyne, showing how their musical depictions are not purely metaphoric: on the contrary, Plato exploited their cultural implications to emphasise the characteristics and the functions of these virtues in the ideal constitution. The second half of Chapter 3 analyses the Platonic portrayal of musical παρανομία, studying both its educational and psychological repercussions in the dialogue and in relations to contemporary Athenian musical practices. Chapter 4 looks at how different types of music may be used to create an inner harmonic order of passions in the soul in different contexts: the musical-mimetic education outlined in the Republic, the musical enhancement of the psychological energies in the members of the Chorus of Dionysus in the Laws, and finally the role of the aulos in the Symposium.

Previous issue date: 2009-10-16 / Fundação Ford / The discussion about the Northeast and the political division of the country regionalization take
part in the pathways institutors of history dynamics as a debate that goes beyond all discourses
and power circles present in academic, politic, artistic, and literary points of view. This context
has provided the structural elements of what can be called the invention or reinvention of spatial
identities, place, the northeast region, and subject, the northeastern people. This dissertation
discusses the musical production and the artistic trajectory of Luis Gonzaga, precisely with his
invention of the baião and other genres that are appropriated by the accordionist, which served as
structural discourses of the referred identity markers of a northeastern identity. The analysis of the
songs (lyrics and rhythms) and the performance of the author served as discursive tactics for the
construction of a northeastern imaginary. The baião and other genres played by a stage
performance organization, called musical trio, forged a type of music which embedded itself
naturally in the processes of identity negotiability with its audience. The discursive translation of
northeast and northeastern people was also engendered through images and symbols retrieved
from garments of regional traditions (the bandits and the cowboys) and reassigned meaning by the
artist within a socially urban context. The musicality of Gonzaga was constructed in an
intersection between the northeastern backwoods (backlands) and the urban centers (the civilized
lands). His production of sounds, themes, and acoustic culture combined were linked to the
northeastern regionalism. Gonzaga s music had the capacity to express a sense of northeastern
identity (northeasternity or nordestinidade) which reverberated and found resonance in its
audience (listeners/receivers). The analysis of the songs was systematically organized seeking to
observe the themes that demonstrated and corroborated with the identity landmarks in regards to
the northeastern territoriality. It should be noted that the use of such themes was genuinely related
to social experiences lived and Gonzaga s musicality so that the themes presented in his repertoire
were: drought, suffering, homesickness/nostalgia, baião, backwoods/backlands (countryside),
aboio (the cry of the Brazilian cowboy), and cowboy among others. It is a dissertation examined
within the perspective of Cultural History, approaching in its theoretical aspects the conceptual
categories of identity, traditions, acoustic culture, social imaginary, performance, rural/urban,
territory, images, cultural resistance and preservation, national-popular, hybridization, and other
rhythms referenced in consonance with the ways of living, the symbolic values, customs and
musical artistry. Finally, this work was constructed in a relationship of history with music and its
A tradução discursiva
A sonoridade gonzagueana

Felix Saul (1883-1942) was engaged as a choiremaster, music writer and music teacher, mainly at his own music school: Stockholms privata konservatorium (SPK). The purpose of this study is to describe how Felix Saul tought children's groups at SPK, and what pedagogy he employed. The empirical material consists of interviews with students who participated in Saul's children's groups and Saul's own series of articles about his music pedagogy. The material has been analyzed from a cultural psychological perspective. The result show that the teaching methods used by Saul to a large extent followed the Tonika-do method as it was described in the contemporary literature, but with a bigger emphasis on harmonic theory and eurhythmics, and that playing games was a central part of the educational activities. The education gave the students access to cultural tool-box a variety of tools in the form of established music-cultural conventions of structuring, expressing and representing music, that they could combine to create individual learning strategies for sight reading, interpretation as well as listening to music. In this study Saul has emerged as an influential music educator even though he was not fully accepted by the establishment.

Maila-go-fenywa, Rangwato Magoro and Mmino wa Kosa: some perspectives on theory and practiceMasoga, Mogomme Alpheus 25 August 2009 (has links)
Looking at current African music studies, one notices an interesting shift from the `norm' to a fresh engagement and analysis. Fresh perspectives are increasingly being presented to position African music dialogue in the arena of the so-called `established music fields'. While these developments are noticeable, the unmentioned, unsung and uncelebrated indigenous African music practitioners, composers, performers, poets, praise singers and so forth must not be forgotten. This work does not claim novelty in terms of the latter gap, but takes the debate further to highlight, though in a small way, such a need. Mme Rangwato Magoro, from Malatane village in the greater Ga-Seloane community, is included as the main research collaborator in this brief piece of work. The work may come as a shock to any established researcher in music and music science. The author could not help but attempt to allow the voice of Mme Magoro to determine the format and content of this piece of work. In addition, the Maila-go-fenywa performance group is linked with the compositional and performance work and the praise poems of Mme Magoro. In conclusion, discussions and debates on musical arts education are addressed in terms of implementation, with examples drawn from the work of Maila-go-fenywa. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Musicology)

Illusion and reality : playback singers of Bollywood and HollywoodLayton, Myrna June 03 March 2014 (has links)
Text in English / India’s film production industry, referred to commonly as Bollywood, and the film production industry of America, referred to as Hollywood, have created a large number of musical films since sound was introduced into motion pictures. Both create fictional stories—illusions, if you will—through the use of prerecorded sound and playback technology coupled with lip-synching interpolated onto filmed images. While studies exist that treat the music of both production centres, there is very little research that compares both, and very little research on playback singers. Playback singers in both Bollywood and Hollywood may or may not be the actors who are seen on the screen; however, people in the Bollywood system—its directors, producers, creators, as well as the journalists who write about it—are very open about this practice, and playback singing is a highly respected career. Conversely, in the Hollywood system, playback singing that is done by an individual other than the on-screen actor remains uncredited or under-credited, and those who do the work are just hired workers; they are not respected as artists in the same way that their Bollywood counterparts are. I believe this difference has a cultural basis, shaped by variation in the way that illusion and reality are expressed by film production staff and interpreted by audiences in the two cultures. Through primary and secondary research, this project seeks to discover the differences and to understand how cultural implications of illusion and reality affect the playback singers in both film centres. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / D.
