THEORETICAL STUDY AND PERFORMING EDITION OF SONATA III BY JAVIER G. COMPEÁN

Ortiz Sánchez, José Mario 01 January 2019 (has links)
Mexican composer Javier G. Compeán finished Sonata III, his most recent composition for solo guitar, in December 2015. Since the composition of his first such work in 2003, the composer has been experimenting with texture, register, dynamic range, extended techniques, harmonic possibilities, timbre, and form in his solo guitar music. In Sonata III, Compeán applied the experience he gained in previous compositions for guitar. This work represents the composer’s current style, in which he returns to a more traditional language but continues to experiment with the technical capabilities of the instrument. Sonata III is Compeán’s most ambitious guitar composition and one of the most important twenty-first century contributions to the Mexican guitar literature. This research focuses on the production of a performing edition of Sonata III. This research also includes a comprehensive analysis of Compeán’s solo guitar music to provide context for guitarists so that they can better understand the composer’s style.

Kroppen och övandet : En observationsstudie om en slagverkares övningsprocess och användande av kroppsliga resurser / Body and practice : An observational study of a percussionist’s process in musical practice and usage of bodily resources

Olovsson, Mika January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how a percussionist uses her body as a semiotic resource and how the process of practising during a limited period is designed. In order to realize this I have self-monitored my 20 minute long practice sessions five days a week during a five-week period. This process has been documented by a video recording device and by writing a log after each session. In the analysis I use design theory as a theoretical perspective. The results show that my body is used both as an expressive tool as well as substitute for the metronome. During the practice sessions, tempo appears to be the main focus, and the musical piece is played in separate movements and rarely played from beginning to end. In the last chapter usage of the body as a semiotic resource is discussed from a design theoretical perspective. Lastly the use and quality of my practice strategy is discussed in relation to relevant literature and research.

It was created and developed by the volunteer work of two professional musicians who played in orchestras, started the projetct within the city public schools. In order to join the ensemble, instrument was not needed, neither knowing how to play it, beyond being free. This research sets out to comprehend the educative processes from the group practices of the ensemble that relates to human development of its participants. In a qualitative approach, this research had the field diary as main instrument for data collection, build through participant observation in activities as rehearsals, performances and living together moments between June 2014 and June 2015. The analysis process was made by looking for units in the diaries and grouping them, crating the categories that was discussed from theroretical framework. It is sustained mainly by the Education understanding of the brazilian educator Paulo Freire, and others concepts that dialogue with this perspective, such as Humanizing Music Education (Ilza Joly, Carlos Kater, Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, Mariana Galon, Mariana Ament, Natália Severino, Pedro Dutra, Maria Carolina Joly), Epistemologies of South (Boaventura Souza Santos e Maria Paula Meneses) and Community Music (Lee Higgins). Analysis reveals that both structured music activities, as the moments resulting from these activities bring music, social and human educative processes between educators, participants and community involved. The educative processes such as respect, lovingness, autonomy and commitment are essentially conected with the educative action, in a way that, in music, "tunning an instrument" can encourage or discourage those aspects depending on how it is conducted.

Piano and memory : Strategies to memorize piano music

Albasini Garaulet, Olga January 2019 (has links)
This study was carried out in order to discover new strategies to memorize piano music. There are six different types of memory involved in performing: auditory, kinesthetic, visual, analytical, nominal and emotional. There are two main ways of practicing: playing practice and non-playing practice. I tried to find out if the order in which we use these two kinds of practice affects the quality of the memorization. During one week I practiced three different pieces following three different methods: 1 Using only playing practice; 2 using first playing practice and then non-playing practice; 3 using first non-playing practice and then playing practice. The second method had a much better result than the other two. The whole process was registered with a video camera and a logbook. /
The exam concert is archived for copyright reasons until 2023.

The affective properties of keys in instrumental music from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries

Ishiguro, Maho A 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The concept of key characteristics deals with the particular moods which different tonalities are believed to provide to music. Discussions regarding their existence and the validity of the phenomena have always been controversial because of a lack of fundamental reasons and explanations for them. Nevertheless, references to key characteristics have appeared in various fields of study and over many centuries: the Greek doctrine of ethos, writings of Guido d’Arezzo, Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Traité de l’harmonie, scribbles in Beethoven’s sketches, and several passages in Hermann von Helmholtz’s On the Sensations of Tones. The attitudes and opinions towards key characteristics have varied in each period of its history. Among the ancient Greeks and Romans, the characteristics of modes were discussed among philosophers, namely, Plato, Aristotle, Lucianus and Cassiodorus. They were believed to affect moral development but were also associated with mysticism. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, references to key characteristics can be found in the writings of numerous theorists, including Gioseffo Zarlino, Ramos de Pariea and Heinrich Glarean. The studies and discussions of key characteristics in those periods became so well explored as to result in the first appearance of a list of the characteristics of each mode. In Germany and France especially, the discussion of key characteristics reached its peak in the first half of the eighteenth century, when it was studied as a part of Rhetoric. Theorists and composers equally showed their interest in the elements each key could offer to music and how to use keys advantageously in order to enrich the musical experience of the listener. While key characteristics were studied commonly as a vital subject by composers in the eighteenth century and as a fundamental of musical education by many young musicians in the early nineteenth, this tradition had all but disappeared by the middle of the twentieth. The concept of key characteristics is no longer commonly taught in our musical institutions, and this desertion from such a traditionally significant discipline is ever puzzling and particularly interesting to me. In my thesis, I will focus on writings from the last half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth to determine the various paths taken in the study of key characteristics. I will investigate the writings and discussions of three scholarly groups—music theorists, composers and scientists—from late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and discuss how the survival of the study of key characteristics was influenced by aspects of the time: popular aspects and aims in the fields of music theory; cultural and social expectations in the validity of phenomena; pronouncements of composers (Arthur Bliss, Alexander Scriabin, Olivier Messiaen, Arnold Schoenberg and Vincent D’Indy) in their musical styles; the rise of a naturalistic view of physical reality as a field and changes it brought to music and societies. I will also include a comparative summary of the status of key characteristics in various periods.

DUENDE: FOUR PRELUDES FOR SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE BY LUIS SERRANO ALARCÓN: CONDUCTOR’S GUIDE, SPANISH HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND INFLUENCE

Iyescas, Kenneth Javier 01 January 2017 (has links)
Luis Serrano Alarcón is one of the most important and relevant composers of our time. He is sought after as a composer, lecturer, and conductor throughout the world. His works have been performed in over 30 countries worldwide by some of the leading musical ensembles in the United States, Europe, and Asia, as well as being highly decorated by winning many prestigious composition contests including the International Band Competition Contest of Corciano, Italy. Born in Valencia, Spain, Alarcón is relatively self-taught in composition, which is a testament to his natural-born gift for composition. His compositional output ranges from the traditional Spanish pasodoble to chamber music, solo pieces, and sophisticated masterpieces for orchestra and wind ensemble. His work Duende: Four Preludes for Symphonic Wind Ensemble was commissioned by the University of St. Thomas Wind Ensemble, Minnesota (USA) in 2010. From its premiere, it became an extremely popular piece among wind band conductors. Duende’s appeal can be attributed to its fusion of Spanish popular music, the symphonic energy of Manuel de Falla’s scores, Iberia by the Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz, and the presence of jazz and Latin music. A detailed conductor’s guide will be provided in this document that includes but not limited to an analysis of form and structure for each movement, conducting considerations, and rehearsal suggestions and techniques. Last but not least, an in-depth exploration into the composer’s background, Spanish musical influences, and the Spanish Band movement and traditions has been conducted. Through this process, an uncovering of intriguing and relevant points of interest have come to the surface. Alarcón’s music sounds the way it does and appeals to the masses because of the juxtaposition of its infectious, Spanish musical elements, as well as its traditional symphonic music components. Moreover, the long and historical past, culture, and traditions of Spanish Bands creates an enormous influence and motivation to compose for the wind band genre. More than two-thirds of all municipalities in Valencia, Spain have musical societies that serve as sponsors for the bands and other ensembles, provide music education, and function as a social center to the townspeople. They are also supported by the Valencian Federation of Musical Societies, all branches of government, the business community, and the media. The musical ensembles participate in both non-competitive and competitive performance activities. Non-competitive performances include concerts, wind band festivals, honor bands, and massed bands. Wind band competitions are sponsored at the municipal, provincial, regional, and international levels. Many of these performance types are combined for special celebrations like patron saint holidays, including Las Fallas and Moros y Cristianos.

Singing Schools in Southcentral Kentucky

Beisswenger, Donald 01 December 1985 (has links)
Singing school teachers, who teach rural church congregations to sing from shape-note gospel songbooks, are still working in southcentral Kentucky, but the demand for them is smaller than it was in the first half of the twentieth century. The interdependence network in which singing school teachers, songbook publishers, and community singing events were key parts began to weaken in the 1940s as a result of the growth in popularity of professional gospel quartet concerts and gospel record albums. Many gospel music enthusiasts who once looked to songbooks as a major source for new material and for developing singing skills turned to albums and concerts in the 1940s. Singing school teachers began to be called on less frequently. The first three chapters of this thesis contain an overview of the gospel singing events, the songbook publishers, and the singing schools. The nature of the relationship between these three gospel music institutions is established. In the fourth chapter, I profile three singing school teachers of southcentral Kentucky. In the conclusion, the development of popular religious music since the early 1800s is summarized and the importance of researching Southern white gospel music as a step toward a greater understanding of Southern music traditions as a whole is examined.

THE ART SONG OF EDMUNDO VILLANI-CÔRTES: A PERFORMANCE GUIDE OF SELECTED WORKS

Rodrigues, Irailda Eneli Barros Silva 01 January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to present a performance guide for singers on twelve selected songs in Brazilian Portuguese for voice and piano by Brazilian composer, pianist, and arranger Edmundo Villani-Côrtes (b.1930). Since 1949, Villani-Côrtes has been active in the musical scene of Brazil. He has a unique compositional style that seamlessly combines elements of both art music and popular music. Villani-Côrtes’s body of works includes over two hundred compositions for solo instrumental music, orchestral music, choral music, and art song. He has written over sixty songs in Brazilian Portuguese, including the Ciclo Cecília Meireles (1987), winner of the 1988 Prize of the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (A.P.C.A.), but most of these remain unpublished. This performance guide is the result of three years of research, study and personal communication between the author, Villani-Côrtes, and poets whose words the composer used as lyrics. It offers a comprehensive body of information relevant for both the performer and voice teacher who approach this new and untraditional repertoire. It includes a concise biography of the composer, biographical information for the poets, comments on the compositional style of Villani-Côrtes, an overview of the Brazilian Portuguese International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)—with a chart of Brazilian Portuguese Sounds, IPA transcriptions with English word-by-word translations and poetic versions of all the lyrics, comments from the composer and the poets on each of the songs, and the technical information, pedagogical suggestions, and interpretative insights provided by the author.

Evaluation et prise en charge du syndrome de négligence spatiale unilatérale : apports de la modalité auditive et de la musique / Evaluation and rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect syndrome : contributions of hearing and music

Guilbert, Alma 09 November 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to focus on hearing in the evaluation and the rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect (USN) syndrome. USN not only affects the visual, but also the auditory modality. The first hypothesis of this thesis was that, due to the specificities of each modality, differences exist between the auditory and visual symptoms of USN. Consequently, the second hypothesis was that the specificities of the auditory modality could permit to compensate the attentional deficits that occur in the visual modality and, thus, make this modality an efficient tool for the rehabilitation. Concerning the evaluation of the auditory symptoms, orienting attention mechanisms in the auditory modality as well as sound lateralisation were explored with patients with USN. These studies showed patients with USN to have difficulties in both. Concerning the rehabilitation, the place of hearing, and in particular of music, in the re-educations in patients with USN was explored. Finally, a program based on music practice was developed and tested with a patient with a chronic USN. This patient showed long-term benefits on USN visual signs and also on daily activities. The results of these studies are consistent with the hypotheses and underline the importance of considering hearing in clinical practice either for the USN evaluation or for its rehabilitation.
