Climate Change in the Changing Climate of News Media: A Comparative Analysis of Mainstream Media and Blog Coverage of Climate Change in the United States and the People's Republic of China, 2005-2008

Xie, Lei 01 December 2009 (has links)
The social construction of climate change has been an enduring interest to media scholars. Extensive research has been done to explore how the mass media portrayed climate change and how the influence of their representations contributed to the social reality of climate change. However, most research focused on the news media in the United States and other developed countries and ignored China--the second largest greenhouse gases emitter in the world. This oversight has led to a sociological map of global climate change with the one of the biggest puzzle pieces missing. In addition, traditional news media were in the spotlight of most literature while little attention was turned to blogs--a rising power in the public discourse. This study expands the understanding of the social construction of climate change by bridging two gaps--the cross-national gap and the cross-media gap--by examining how the news media and the blogosphere in the United States and China--the top two greenhouse gases emitters--framed this arguably the most daunting challenge of the 21st century. Following framing theorists' call for using defragmented frame typologies, the design of this frame analysis derived from five traditions of research of media framing and the social construction of climate change: (1) "episodic vs. thematic" framing, (2) micro-issue salience, (3) audience-based frames, (4) attribution of responsibility and (5) skepticism towards climate change. A purposive sample using multi-stage probability sampling techniques was comprised of 638 articles from three prestige U.S. newspapers (New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post), two official Chinese newspapers (People's Daily and China Daily), and the American and Chinese blogospheres. The results delineated distinct characteristics of media framing that mirrored the social reality of climate change in both countries. Moreover, bloggers of both countries showed varying degrees of divergence from the news media, contradicting the argument that the blogosphere has been normalized by traditional news sources. Most importantly, this study synthesized its results with earlier literature and developed the B (Bloggers' understanding) - M (Media portrayals) - S (Skepticism) theoretical model that holds great explanatory power to harmonize inconsistent knowledge about the social construction of climate change, thus opening a new research avenue and significantly advancing our understanding in this area.

American local radio journalism: A public interest channel in crisis

Sanders, Tyrone, 1951- 03 1900 (has links)
xiii, 229 p. : ill. A print copy of this title is available from the UO Libraries, under the call number: KNIGHT PN4888.R33 S26 2008 / This study looks at the status of local radio news in the United States in light of changes in policy, economics, production and distribution technology and the dynamic media environment. It examines how differences in ownership relate to the amount of news programming offered on local stations, how those stations are staffed and the working conditions for today's radio journalists. Two areas of communication theory provide the basis for the study, Political Economy of Communication and Localism. Both offer excellent perspectives for studying the radio broadcasting industry and the people who work in it. Political economy allows the study to look closely at the impact of ownership in our capitalist society, how government regulates ownership and programming, how those factors affect the working conditions for journalists and how they ultimately impact the public interest. Political economy is a holistic approach that also calls upon us to consider a moral philosophy and make recommendations for the good of society. Localism is a long-held policy objective of the Federal Communications Commission that has been a part of the regulatory process relating to ownership and programming of news and public affairs throughout the existence of radio in the United States. Using a triangulation of both quantitative and qualitative methods, the study documents the news operations of four different types of ownership structures within a single radio market, Salt Lake City, Utah. The primary quantitative method used content analysis to examine a sample of 255 hours of radio programming across the ownership groups. Qualitative methods of in-depth interviews and observation were used to examine how the stations were staffed, the working conditions for local journalists and how the news programming is produced. The study found the overall amount of local radio news programming to be low, with locally owned stations generally producing more news then those with large, outside corporate ownership. It also found working conditions to vary greatly among ownership groups. Local owners tended to be much more supportive of local journalists and provide better conditions for the production and programming of local radio news. / Adviser: Alan G. Stavitsky

The international flow of news regarding the 2003 Irag War : a comparative analysis

Louw, Ivonne Petronella 01 1900 (has links)
This comparative study conducted within the framework of world system theory aimed to analyse the international flow of news regarding the 2003 Iraq War in online newspapers representative of centre, semi-peripheral and peripheral countries. Two of the newspapers represent centre nations directly involved in the war. Overall, the findings confirmed that the extensive war coverage of the newspapers can in part be attributed to the status of the USA and the UK as centre nations. The findings furthermore indicate the importance of both event and context-related factors as filters in the selection of items for news coverage of the war. Distinct differences emerged in the coverage of newspapers from the three spheres of the world system. These differences can be ascribed to the attitudes of the newspapers towards the war, the use of sources in the war coverage, the propaganda strategies deployed and the framing of the events / Communication Science / M. Coverage of African countries in Pan-African business magazines : evidence of hierarchy in regional news flows

Ubomba-Jaswa, Florence Otae 04 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the flow of economic news in Africa, in order to investigate the potential existence of regional hierarchies in international news flow. The research was based on a framework of theories on international news flow. A quantitative and qualitative content analysis of a sample of news articles published in Africa Investor, African Business and Business in Africa during 2007 and 2008 was analysed. The quantitative results showed that South Africa received the highest level of coverage and was covered to a greater extent than any other African country. The qualitative results indicated that there was clear evidence of regional hierarchy in the coverage of African countries: South Africa received extensive coverage probably due to the fact that it is the largest, most advanced and influential economy in the continent. The study showed that inequality in news coverage is not only a global issue, but also a regional one. / Communication Science / M.A. (International Communication)

Deu no post: blogs como nova categoria de webjornalismo : um estudo de caso sobre o Blog do Noblat / In the post: blogs as a new webjournalism category: a case study from Blog do Noblat

Juliana Lúcia Escobar 22 May 2007 (has links)
Investigation about blogs as a new webjournalism category, making a case study from BLOG DO NOBLAT to discover if blogs can innovate daily journalism practice. We approached the blog under study through qualitative textual analysis, with documental analysis and an open and semi-structured individual interview with the journalist, observing Ricardo Noblats professional appropriation and exploration of blog potentials. We arrived to ten aspects of webjornalism present in the blog, according to three perspectives: a) relations among media; b) the relationship between blog and journalist/blogger and readers/internet users; c) blogs and what it means to be journalist or make journalism. We note that blogs can be a new webjournalism category that appear specifically in the internet: they have a new content organization standard that is completely different from the one adopted by other news media for decades. They allow a new journalist/blogger and readers/internet users relationship with a more constant dialogue and easier exchange between the agents in a communicative process. They can make journalists more receptive to his publics opinion. We also note that blogs give journalists more freedom from his boss and communication companies, maintaining his status like a reality intermediary for society

Não houve a criação de novos cargos ou novas contratações / Placed in the context of digitalization and media convergence, the principle the telejournalism extended its content to the web, mainly through sites, since the TV is not yet showinga converged platform. But in 2007, the Brazilian Digital Terrestrial Television (SBTVD) came into operation and new possibilities have emerged to television journalism, with emphasis on interactivity, which thereafter could directly through the TV. Thus, the purpose of this work is to verify that the production of content for interactive digital television changes the routine work of a professional writing newscast. On methods, this study deals with a literature that authors resorted to studying televison journalism, media convergence and digital television, and it is applied because an interactive application was created for television news Unesp Notícias, of the University TV UNESP and a platform to post content to supply the application, programmed in Ginga. Once the app and the platform were inserted into Unesp Notícias, in depth interviews conducted with some of the journalistis writing. Thus, it was possible to verify that the interactive application changed the routine work of all professionals in the journalism department of Unesp Notícias. The new labor demand generated was distributed among the three areas of professional writting: production, reporting and editing. In addition to each of the relevant functions of journalists, now add up activities related to the app. There was no creation of new positions or new hires

DANGERS OF THE NEWS(FEED): AN EXPLORATION INTO FAKE NEWS, PHOTOGRAPHIC TRUTH AND THE POWER OF DIGITAL COMMUNICATION ON FACEBOOK

Galla, Taylor 01 January 2018 (has links)
In an age of ever-expanding digital communication platforms and the presence of news online becoming paramount, the amount of information being shared and the truth of that information is becoming more and more difficult to track. The power of these social platforms is one that all should recognize and reflect upon in terms of their use of them, and reliance on them for the information they need. This thesis seeks to explore this power and the ways in which to remedy the falsities spread on the platforms faster than ever before, through photographic journalism.

Weathercasters in Local Television News: A Qualitative Case Study of Culture and Technology in a Large U.S. Broadcasting Market During the Monsoon

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This is a case study of weathercasters in a large U.S. television market from five different English speaking stations conducted before, during, and after a severe weather season. The research applies the ethnographic process to inscribe and define the culture of local weathercasters in the news environment. The purpose of this study is to examine the extant cultural characteristics discerned by weathercasters and the changes in weather broadcast technology used by live “on-air” television personnel. Forty-nine elite, in depth interviews with 17 different weathercasters along with participant and non-participant observation yielded transcripts and field notes obtained during the six month data acquisition phase. Using qualitative methods and the CAQDAS program Dedoose, 953 coded excerpts from the transcripts were analyzed for various patterns, behaviors, and characteristics relevant to culture, technology, and perceptions of weathercasters. The excerpts revealed dominant cultural aspects defined as dichotomous differences, autonomous functions, and identity perceptions. Socio-technical models are explicated in relationship to control, knowledge, and strategic coping mechanisms. The newsroom and weathercaster co-cultural context is defined by the conformity versus autonomy relationship and the external and internal structure of the weathercaster’s working environment is delineated. Co-cultural models explain the way influence operates in severe weather situations within the newsroom culture. The results have utility for scholars studying technology, culture, newsroom routines, rituals, and professionals who work in the television news industry. The findings are highly relevant for television weathercasters, newsroom producers, and broadcast managers. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Journalism and Mass Communication 2016

The present work has as main objective indicate some characteristics that define the resulting journalism from the reuse of still published news is printed journalism. Through the discourse qualitative analysis, thematic depiction and the argumentative web of the three issues of Cadernos Diplô, derivative publications from monthly newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique, and the trajectory of constructivist paradigms (structuralist and interacionist theories), gatekeeper and newsmaking that mark the journalism theories, it was possible to conclude that the reuse of news is an editorial practice and not a particular category within journalism, and it can contribute to ease the myopia that the interpretative community, meaning, the journalists suffer, and it is presented as an alternative facing the journalistic necessity which characterize the focused journalist by the present. Beyond being an alternative also to the present criterion or the factually the mold the commercial/industrial journalism (that consider the news as goods to be commercialized), work as an optimization process in the information management and to preserve memories and analyses which are important human being history

Ainda procuramos investigar se o conhecimento básico sobre as etapas envolvidas em uma produção televisiva tem interferência na maneira como os trabalhadores das horas comunitárias recebem e interpretam as mensagens / This dissertation is to study the reception of members at Botucatu's Communitarian Vegetable Garden Program in respect to the news articles about environment transmitted by the programs Balanço Geral, Tem Noticias, Jornal Nacional e Jornal da Band. For this, we adopted as referential theorethical studies of reception in Latin America, primarily considering the concepts and ideas of Jesus Martin-Barbero and Guilhermo Orozco Gómez, and interpretations of these texts carried out by other authors as Nilda Jacks and Ana Carolina Escosteguy. As methodology, the research included questionnaires, used the participant search method and the focal group. By this latter technique, we identify the perceptions and productions of meaning established by the participants in relation to the content they witnessed, as well as understanding and applicability of them in everyday affairs. Even we investigate if the basic knowledge about the steps involved in a television production has interference in how workers in communitarian vegetable gardens receive and interpret messages
