HORSE RACE OVER POLICIES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE 2008 U.S. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN SOUTH KOREAN AND AMERICAN NEWSPAPERSHa, Jaesik 01 January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to compare media framing in the news coverage of South Korean and American newspaper media during the 2008 U.S. presidential election. The findings show that major newspapers in South Korea and the United States framed the election as a political game, focusing on tactics and polling. A horse race frame was used in 40.2% of South Korean news articles and in 37.8% of U.S. news articles. In addition, this study examines the kinds of topics that predominated in the election coverage. The findings suggest that the topic of `election politics' accounted for more articles than any other topic: 53.8% of South Korean news articles, and 41.3% of U.S. news articles, dealt with election politics. This category of `election politics' includes debate, campaign strategy, candidate qualifications, and polling. Foreign affairs and the economy occupied a relatively small percentage among topics. Another finding was that the national interest frame was insignificant in the election coverage of the two countries. In U.S. news coverage, news sources are diversified among politicians (34.6%), candidates (29.4%), civil society (e.g., citizens or civil organization, 14.1%), and other sources. In contrast, among South Korean news articles, 44.8% used foreign media as a primary source.

The watchdog role of newspapers: Newspaper coverage of Sinclair Broadcasting's announcement to air a one-sided documentary right before the 2004 presidential election.Weiderman, Greta Kaye 01 December 2009 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Greta K. Weiderman, for the Master of Arts degree in Mass Communication and Media Arts, presented on Aug. 21, 2009, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: THE WATCHDOG ROLE OF NEWSPAPERS: NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF SINCLAIR BROADCASTING'S ANNOUNCEMENT TO AIR A ONE-SIDED DOCUMENTARY RIGHT BEFORE THE 2004 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. William Babcock This thesis is a content analysis examining newspaper coverage of Sinclair Broadcasting's announcement that it planned to air a program titled "Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal" 13 days before the November 2004 presidential election. Sinclair Broadcast Group ordered its 61 stations to preempt regular programming and run the show, which attacked then presidential candidate John Kerry's activism against the Vietnam War (Jensen, 2004). The film was to be presented as news programming. This study examines how 41 newspapers in cities with Sinclair television stations covered the announcement to run the "Stolen Honor" documentary and the situation following it in news stories, editorials and columns. It also examines if the ownership or circulation of the newspapers was related to the way they covered the controversy and whether these newspapers served their watchdog functions. The results indicated that there was no relationship between a newspaper's performance of the watchdog role, as measured by the watchdog index, and its circulation or ownership. But the study did find, however, that as a whole, the newspapers performed their watchdog role.

Manlig och kvinnlig representation i ledarsidor bland svenska nyhetstidningar : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av svenska ledarsidor / Male and Female Representation in Swedish Newspapers : A Quantitative Content Analysis of swedish editorialsNorlander, Philip, Steen, Steff January 2018 (has links)
Recent studies show that when it comes to media exposure, men and women still face completely different conditions in how often and where they are placed in the context of news reports. Men still stands for the vast majority of news content, and even though progress is being made it isn't going fast enough according to some and that more has to be done before we can have total equality in terms of who gets the opportunity the get their voices heard. In this study we went in to take a closer look at how often the different sexes appears as writers on four of Swedens biggest newspapers op-ed pages. In our study we have conducted a quantitative content analysis on the op-ed pages in the for swedish papers Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. We looked on how often any of the two sexes appeared, what subjects they were writing about and what types on news the texts were discussing. What we found where that the op-ed pages actually where almost entirely equal in terms of who got to write, and what they were writing about. Although the analysis isn't big enough to be able to tell how the situation is across all of sweden's newspaper and media content, it still gives an interesting look on how the daily newspapers works when it comes to who gets a place at the op-ed pages.

CRACKING THE WORLD SYSTEM: MEDIATING PUBLIC PEDAGOGIES FROM THE “WORLD REVOLUTION” OF 1848Anderson, James Kepley 01 May 2016 (has links)
This project adopts the framework of World Systems Analysis [WSA], formulated by global sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein, to take the entire world system as the unit of analysis. Drawing on the work of Paulo Freire, the seminal theorist of critical pedagogy, this project couples WSA with the analytic lens of public pedagogy to overcome the conceptual limitations of ideology and of various postmodern critiques. Primary media sources are used for purposes of critical political economy, to outline the contours of economic changes and class formations from the first world revolution. A detailed descriptive history of the revolutions that swept across Europe in 1848 recovers narratives from that critical juncture. I discuss prominent public pedagogies via analysis of primary print media sources like the London Times. Focusing on hegemonic shifts in the world system around 1848, I throw light on movement-media cracks in the British Empire, while also uncovering oft-ignored resistance, insurrections and utopian experiments in the Americas. Pedagogies of conspiracy theory and Manifest Destiny legitimated US aggression against Mexico as the former took initial steps toward becoming a world system superpower. Problems and pedagogies from 1848 are also updated and examined in light of the contemporary society-media context to consider cracks in the existing system and learn from the past new possible paths out of the world system’s terminal structural crisis.

Previous issue date: 2016 / This work is supposed to perform a sociological investigation and analysis of Dom José Tupinambá da Frota’s (1882-1959) social influence as the first Bishop of the Catholic Church in Sobral, a 200.000 people city of northeastern Brazil. The analysis is related to this influent religious leader in several fields, specially, journalism. He created the “Correio da Semana” (Weekly Post) in the year of 1918 which is still being edited until nowdays, after 97 years. It is probably the oldest newspaper in Brazil, considering its category and peculiar characteristics. “Correio da Semana” is a weekly publication that became to be a legitimate instrument of the fair journalism, let us say. The roll of this paper basically consisted on a straight support to the Roman Catholic cultural style headed by Dom José. Thus, this journal has aimed to work as a messenger of the Gospel diffusion, public information, propaganda, entertainment, as well as, Christian moral and good customs. Meanwhile, an opposition paper appeared. “A Lucta” (The Struggle), leaded by newspaper man Deolindo Barreto, ended it up raising an unavoidable public conflict in a certain time of Sobral history (1918-1925). It was considered by the catholic fellows as the “bad press”. “Correio da Semana” turned to be a stronger reaction tool to develop the Roman Catholic principles diffusion in all aspects, specially in ideological, political and religious directions, mainly from the second half of XIX century until the first half of XX century.

Country-Bashing in Media in Context of Global Terrorism: A case study of British newspapers’ reporting of terrorist attacks in London and ParisChen, Wenqin 05 June 2018 (has links)
Media construction of major terrorist attacks has received much attention ever since the 1970s in the field of Communication Sciences. Recently, investigations of media participation in the framing process of terrorist attacks have highlighted media’s role in the meaning-making of the attacks and the construction of identity, opposition and confrontation after the attack, indicating the relations of media to the attacked country, the authorities, the readership and terrorism. This thesis tries to analyze a specific discursive phenomenon “country-bashing” in a relational way with other discourses in terms of identity construction and value conflicts in media construction of the terrorist attacks in London (2005) and Paris (November 2015). The aim is to investigate how country-bashing is related to the core idea of media framing of the terrorist attacks. We start from identifying the emphasized frames with quantitative thematic analysis and cluster analysis on four British national daily newspapers, and the case studies of two terrorist attacks are conducted with a discursive approach of framing analysis. In this thesis, eight emphasized frames are identified, which consist a schematic model of media construction of terrorist attacks. The case study on London attacks reveals that country-bashing is focused on political actors and religious minority (suspected community), which facilitates the problem definition and responsibility attribution and finally promote the framing of “war provokes revenge”. In the case of the Paris attacks, France-bashing is a dynamic discursive system which contains an interplay of different types of bashing, shifting with the interpretative framework of event construction (from local context to European context). The thesis concluds that the phenomenon of “country-bashing” is a dynamic (re)construction of relations among the people, the country and the “other”. We summarize 4 types bashing within this discursive system, which are actor country- bashing, policy-bashing, negative branding (places) and systematic bashing. While the first two types of bashing can lead to a complete causality to terror attacks, the latter two provides a fragmented reading and open to further meaning-making. The results of the schematic model of media construction and the types of country-bashing can be used as an aid for further empirical investigation. / Doctorat en Information et communication / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished
