Seasons of migrations to the North : a study of biographies and narrative identities in US-Mexican and Swedish-Chilean return movementsTollefsen Altamirano, Aina January 2000 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine dynamics and consequences of geographical return movements in two North-South contexts based on migrants' biographies. The thesis examines the consequences of return migration in terms of social mobility, meanings of return and the shaping of identity-place relationships for the subjects of migration. Categories of return were identified and related to evolving migration processes in the two case studies of long term labour migration and political exile respectively. The concept of 'narrative identity' was used to analyse the shaping of the migration biographies and to examine the ways migrants made sense of their experiences of emigration/exile and return. In a further step the narrative identities were discussed in relation to examples of public narratives in the two contexts. The dissertation's case study of US-Mexican migration showed that geographical return took different shapes at the local level as the migration process evolved between the studied municipality in Mexico and different destinations in the USA. The initial phase of formative return led to the gradual establishment of a migration tradition and development of a remittance economy. Return movements turned in a later phase into an increasingly trapped migratory pattern of differentiated circulation between the municipality in Mexico and different locations in the USA. The 'narrative identities' of returning migrants were related to family situations (family formation, safety of the family, family commitment), perceptions of real life in Mexico and work identities (respected worker, independent businessman), negative experiences of migration (threat, social degradation, trapped migration), and the search and fulfilment of personal experiences. These narrative identities were contrasted with public narratives, showing the partial incorporation of some public narratives and contrasting senses of self of migrants in relation to 'imposed identities' in both the USA and Mexico. The second case study of the dissertation identified categories of return movements in a context of changing conditions in both Chile and Sweden. Examples of categories were 'conditional return' and 'programmed return' and in the phase of desexilio professional circulation, continued exile and everyday life circulation. The narrative identities of retornados were related to family situations (children's future and education, the extended family and the family vote), Sweden as 'parenthesis' (programmed return, duty to return, political return, personal return), work identities (independent businessman, professional circulation) and experiences of exclusion (foreigner, immigrant, prolonged political exile). The narrative identities of migrants were discussed in relation to larger public narratives about retornados in the Chilean media. / digitalisering@umu

Urban Aboriginal identity construction in Australia: an Aboriginal perspective utilising multi-method qualitative analysisBolt, Reuben January 2010 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / ABSTRACT Background: Since British arrival, Aboriginal people have experienced marginalisation and extreme disadvantage within Australian society. Urban-based Aboriginal people, even more than those living in remote communities, have been subject to the impact of racism and discrimination on self-identity. Nonetheless, many urban-based Aboriginal people proudly identify with their Aboriginality. Having long been the subject of others’ research, it is only in recent times that the question of identity has attracted attention in Aboriginal research. Furthermore, few studies have addressed urban Aboriginality from an insider’s perspective. Aim and significance: The main aim of this research was to understand better the process of the construction of Aboriginal identity. Knowing how Aboriginal people see themselves and their future as Aboriginal within the broader Australian community is significant in providing a foundation for both the protection and the preservation of urban-based Aboriginal identity, while helping to create positive practical benefits and minimising the damage to Aboriginal culture that result from collective memory loss. A secondary aim was to test whether tools of narrative analysis could be used within an Indigenous Australian context, utilising Aboriginal Australian English language, and in the context of a specific urban setting. Method: The study used purposeful sampling to recruit 11 individuals from three age cohorts of mixed-descent Aboriginal people living in urban communities on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews which were tape-recorded and then transcribed in full. Both thematic and narrative methods were employed to analyse the data. Interpretations benefitted from an insider perspective, as the researcher is a member of the community under study. Results: Findings from both methods of analysis show that participants experience their Aboriginality as problematic. Nonetheless, they make strong claims to Aboriginal identity. In making such claims, they link the personal to the social in a variety of ways, drawing on both negative and positive aspects of being part of a marginalised culture to explain the construction of the problem of Aboriginal identity and, as importantly, its on-going resolution through processes of identity construction and re-construction. The Shoalhaven Aboriginal worldview is revealed thorough a thematic analysis of 11 interviews and shows that participants are able to construct positive versions of self when they perceive themselves as living in accordance with the prescribed worldview. Results from case study analyses reveal how four participants distinctly craft the Shoalhaven worldview. The adoption of multi-method qualitative analysis documents the construction of both collective and personal Aboriginal identities and shows how these become core elements of the various strategies for solving the broader problems of Aboriginal identity in contemporary urban Australian society. Conclusion: Understanding the construction of Aboriginal identity from a micro-sociological perspective, with the added benefit of an insider’s analysis, can point the way to the development of more meaningful and appropriate strategies to both address and alleviate the broader problems of Aboriginal marginalisation in Australia. The findings from this research have documented the narrative construction of urban Aboriginal identity revealing the positive and negative aspects of the urban Aboriginal identity concept. A starting point to address the broader problem of Aboriginal marginalisation in Australia is to focus on the positive elements of the urban Aboriginal identity concept, with a view to devise, develop and implement culturally appropriate strategies and policies. The researcher’s life experience, informed by the ontology (collective values and perspectives) of the community, influenced and informed the analysis and results of the study. This shared ontology and community acceptance was integral in the process of developing and maintaining rapport and trust with participants which ultimately shaped the interaction process influencing personal accounts told in the interview.

[en] THE REFUGE OF THE SELF, IDENTITY AND OTHERNESS IN DIARY WRITING / [pt] ESCRITAS DO EU, REFÚGIO DO OUTRO - IDENTIDADE E ALTERIDADE NA ESCRITA DIARÍSTICASERGIO DA SILVA BARCELLOS 25 March 2009 (has links)
[pt] A presente tese visa analisar a possibilidade de pensar o outro, ou a alteridade, no
seio da escrita diarística, tão comumente compreendida como uma escrita
subjetiva.
[en] The dissertation is the result of a research whose main
goal was to analyze the possibility of thinking the other,
or the otherness, in the core of diary writing.
Personal journals and diaries are considered the privileged
territory of the self and upon an exam through the
perspective of their destination they reveal a process of
identity constitution. The narrative identity created
during the practice of personal writing consists also of
the presence of otherness - the other that is both the
object of writing and its possible reader. The notions of
personal identity are reviewed as well as the concept of
narrative identity, by Paul Ricoeur, and relational
identity, by Paul John Eakin. The diaries that are analyzed
in this dissertation are: The diary of Carolina Maria de
Jesus, the diary of Alice Dayrell (also known as
Helena Morley), excerpts of the diary of Princess Isabel
and of the Dr. Felippe Maria Wolff.

[en] SUBJECTED TO SCHOOL?: THE DEVELOPMENT OF IDENTITIES IN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DURING THE PRODUCTION OF A VIDEO SCRIPT / [pt] SUJEITOS À ESCOLA OU SUJEITOS DA ESCOLA?: A ELABORAÇÃO DAS IDENTIDADES DE ALUNOS DO ENSINO MÉDIO DURANTE A PRODUÇÃO DE UM ROTEIRO DE VÍDEOCAROLINA REAL ASSIS RIBEIRO 28 September 2011 (has links)
[en] This research suggests that the lack of motivation that marks the
relationship of many young people with school could change if there were more
opportunities for dialogue with the institution, specially through providing
situations that allow students to express their dilemmas and ideas. This
assumption stems from the connection found between theoretical references in the
areas of sociology of youth and education, psychology and philosophy of
language. Such connection indicated the need to study the student in his/her
situated condition, as an agent who constructs his/her own identity through
language and narratives. The aim of this study was first, to understand what are
the competing discourses in the construction of student identities for those
involved in the research, and, second, to analyze how the situations of individual
expression and interaction allow those identities to be consciously re-constructed.
To this end, we invited two groups of high school students from a public school in
the city of Rio de Janeiro to participate in workshops and prepare a script that
would then be video.

L’exil dans l’oeuvre de Fulvio Tomizza / Exile in Tomizza's workLocatelli, Alessandra 05 December 2014 (has links)
Our research « Exile in Tomizza's work » analyses the author's production through the concept of exile which, as the main cause and subject of his writing, provides a coherent framework for reading it.Tomizza's work uses fiction as a means of investigating the conflicting components of the author's multiple identity that the Istrian exodus revealed and emphasized: Italianness vs Slavness, urbanism vs rurality, conservative family traditions vs progressive personal convictions. The recomposing of the author's narrative identity follows the course of a multiform writing that moves in three directions. The first one consists of the anamnesis of the collective dimension of the author's identity, represented by the fictional setting of the Istrian "piccolo mondo" before, during and after the exodus. From there, it moves on to novels and short stories of openly autobiographical inspiration. These are characterized by a self-analysis that expresses the individual and psychological tragedy of exile, particularly through oneiric writing. Lastly, the historical-documentary novels deepen the analysis of exile through the partial decentering from the object of investigation by which the author is transformed into investigator and judge of dramas similar to his own that affected the lives of other individuals.

Atribuce příčin vlastního úspěchu u jedinců působících ve firemním prostředí. / Attribution of the causes for the personal success of individuals working in a corporate enviromentHehejíková, Alica January 2020 (has links)
1 ABSTRACT The diploma thesis deals with one's own understanding of the career success of individuals successful in business. Its aim is to describe the causal attributions of individuals to success factors and to place them in a simplified framework of the narrative identity of success to evaluate trends in causal attributions at the individual level. In the theoretical part, the work describes the issues of career and success, while providing insight into various definitions and approaches. It also discusses causal attributions and attributional tendencies in human perception. After that, it explains the concept of narrative identity and its development. The practical part describes qualitative research, which includes data in the form of four unstructured interviews with career-successful individuals. Data analysis was inspired by selected principles of grounded theory and narrative analysis. The analysis of the data showed a unique link between the causal attributes of individuals and the development of the narrative identity of their success. The most important factor of success was diligence/hard working as sacrificing time for other activities and fascination with the topic. Furthermore, the qualities acquired during life and the influence of the individual's social world came to the fore. It turned...

Zdroje problémů identity ukrajinských elit / Sources of the Ukrainian Elite's Identity ProblemsŽernov, Denis January 2011 (has links)
This thesis addresses identity issues of the Ukrainian elites using two parallel Ukrainian narratives. In search for conflict lines, we look at 20th ct. milestones which played a major part in the formation of the Ukrainian elites. An emphasis is placed on the modernization of Ukrainian society in 1920s and 1930s. We also analyze the impact of these two Ukrainian narratives on the formation of the Soviet nation using strong historical ties between the Ukrainian and the Russian nation. These ties still have an impact on the formation of Ukrainian identities; however, the conclusion of this thesis suggests that it will be possible to assess the definite shape of the Ukrainian identity only after a new supranational identity - similar to the Soviet one - has been shaped. KEY WORDS: ELITES MODERNIZATION NARRATIVE IDENTITY RUSSIAN UKRAINIAN SOVIET
