Global sport, nationalism and national identity construction : the case of naturalised Chinese table tennis players in South Korea

Lee, Myung-Sun January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to analyse the process of South Korean nationalism and national identity construction through studying Chinese table tennis players that have become naturalised citizens of South Korea. Based on an Eliasian theoretical and methodological prospective, this research employs three different methods of analysis. First, it employs archival analysis in the historical context chapter to determine the origins of table tennis and its spread to Northeast Asia, the political and societal role of table tennis in China and South Korea, and the appearance of the first naturalised player in South Korea. Second, this study employs newspaper text analysis to investigate newspaper reports of the South Korean and Chinese table tennis matches from the 1988 Seoul Olympics Games to the 2012 Games in London. This section first examines the flow of Korean nationalism through the table tennis matches between Korea and China, and then explores how the newspaper reports expressed nationalism in regard to the Korean players and naturalised players. Third, this study employs an interview method to gather data from 17 interviewees who have been associated directly or indirectly associated with the Chinese naturalised table tennis players in order to further examine the process of the formation of South Korean national identity. The first analysis regarding historical findings identifies that table tennis has evolved precisely alongside Elias s sportisation theory. In South Korea and China, table tennis has played the role of a national sport. Especially in South Korea, table tennis was a nationalistic sport that opposed anti-colonialism and anti-communism. It was in table tennis that the first naturalised athlete in the history of South Korean sport was selected for the Olympics. In the second analysis, through examining news reports of the Olympic table tennis matches between China and South Korea, this research identifies that South Korean newspapers continue to generate a strong image of nationalism. Moreover, the newspaper reports do not use the same nationalistic sentiments and personal pronouns for South Korean players and naturalised players. Finally, the interview analysis investigates the formation of South Korean identity through the naturalised table tennis players in South Korea. Three national identities groups have arisen in South Korea in response to the emergence of naturalised athletes. The first group approves of globalisation and naturalisation. The second group opposes globalisation and naturalisation. The third group, which comprises the media, has no specific interest in globalisation and naturalisation, but has an identity that changes based on the interests of the media company. In other words, the evidence from the interviews carried out for this thesis shows that South Korean national identity in regard to naturalised athletes remains diversified and not unified.

Lost Koreans: Information Technology and Identity in the Former Soviet Union

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The history of Koreans in the former Soviet Union dates back to more than a century ago. Yet little was known about them during the existence of the USSR, and even less as the first decade of the Newly Independent States unfolded. This current study is one of the first attempts to quantitatively measure the national and ethnic identity of this group. The research was conducted via an online survey in two languages, English and Russian. Three main variables -- ethnic identity, national identity and information technology -- were used to test the hypothesis. The data collection and survey process revealed some interesting facts about this group. Namely, there are some strong indicators that post-Soviet Koreans belong to a category of their own within the larger group known as the "Korean diaspora." Secondly, a very strong sense of ethnic group belonging, when paired with higher education and high to medium levels of proficiency with Internet technology, indicates the potential for further development and sustainability of these ethnic and national identities, particularly when nurtured by the continued progress of information technology. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. / [en] In the end of the 1930’s, Carmen Miranda, the singer, became a symbol of the Brazilian identity, able to set certain cultural brand to the country. As a result, the interpreter of sambas and marchinhas is recognized, even nowadays, as one of the most important names in the Brazilian folk music. The strength of the legend that had consolidated her as a national icon still imprisons the memory of the artist. Instead of starting from such established image, this dissertation aims at, therefore, analyzing its construction process in the previous years, in order to make of her path a way to discuss the configuration of an identity that intends to be national. If the legend built under the picture of the singer is the starting point of this work, understand how this trajectory happened, with the intention to perceive the wider networks of dialogue and interlocution from which it was accomplished, is the ultimate goal of this text.

[en] LESSONS ON THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY: THE SAQUAREMAS AND THE CONFORMATION OF THE BRAZILIAN PEOPLE. / [pt] LIÇÕES DA CIÊNCIA DO BELO: OS SAQUAREMAS E A CONFORMAÇÃO DOS BRASILEIROS

ZINA MARIA DE TEIVE E ARGOLLO VALDETARO 08 October 2008 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this dissertation is to study the Brazilian imperial experience under an original premise, the inland expansion, a set of practices composed by symbolic elements, to inscribe the imperial Order in the souls of the Brazilian citizens. Then a group of selected symbolic practices concerning the field of belief was established, so that the Brazilian people would be conformed and the national identity constituted, which would ensure the engraving of the imperial Order on the Brazilian souls. Concurrently with the development of this premise, it is displayed that the leaders of the imperial state had also carried out the establishment of the nation and their own establishment as statesmen. The dissertation is developed through two chronological backgrounds: the decade of 1860, during which the Saquarema direction has experienced its golden moment, and the 1880`s , when the Saquarema direction was already suffering severe criticism. In the first moment, the vehicle chosen to work the effectiveness of the inland expansion, in the midst of harsh debates and intense differences, was the equestrian statue of D. Pedro I, persona reinterpreted by the Conservative Party as the freedom´s herald and the Order´s guarantor. The second period of time features as centerpiece Pedro Américo`s Independência ou Morte painting, around which the inland expansion was claimed by the members of the Conservative Party on the Provinces of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, by monarchists and republicans, all of them aiming to, by connecting themselves to the painting and its meaning, reinstate the concept of freedom associated by some to monarchy - seeking to restore the regimen`s modernizing nature, among severe criticism the regimen was suffering - and, by others, to the republic - the regimen that would open up for Brazil, new horizons, associated with the republic itself and with Progress.

British Chekhov : an analysis of the United Kingdom's 21st century national identity through contemporary reinterpretations of Anton Chekhov's plays

Augusto Arboleda, Diego January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is a socio-political analysis of the United Kingdom’s contemporary national identity, as expressed through an intercultural examination of eight Anton Chekhov’s productions presented in the country between 2009 and 2011, characterised by their aesthetic and socio-political diversity. The introduction presents a theoretical exploration and definition of the notions of interculturalism and national identity, which serve as the theoretical pillars of this work. A historical contextualisation summarises the reception, assimilation and reinterpretation processes of British Chekhovian discourses from the early 20th century onwards, as well as the urban and regional transformations that the country experienced during the same time frame. The first chapter explores traditional views of national identity through the analysis of double-bill performances, connecting Chekhov’s pieces to ‘national’ works by Terence Rattigan and William Shakespeare. The second chapter discuses international discourses and their influence in the creation of local imaginaries, using foreign Chekhovian productions presented on the British stage to scrutinise reception processes, importation models and the power of sponsors and festivals. The third chapter approaches Scottish and female discourses, emphasising their ‘otherness’ and value in the construction of more plural notions of national identity, through rewritings of the Russian author done by playwrights born and raised within the UK. The fourth chapter reflects on politically progressive and intercultural understandings of nation through new British experimental performances inspired by Chekhov’s iconographies and symbolisms. Finally, the conclusion re-examines Chekhovian dramaturgy, national identity and interculturalism, proposing an abstract outline to understand processes of reception, assimilation and/or reinterpretation of foreign dramatic discourses within any given geographical construct, and highlighting the importance of building a plural and hybrid post-Brexit British society, focused on a constant intercultural negotiation between superimposing cultural forces.

[en] This abstract presents an investigation of how the representation of the national image is established in brazilian literature, a period in literature when Romanticism and Modernism were the most remarkable. Nationalism and Democracy : A quantitative study about the relationship between national identity and attitudes towards democracy

Gabrielsson, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
This article sets out to examine how different levels and types of nationalism are correlated with attitudes towards democracy, a relationship that has not received much attention in previous research. I aim to investigate this relationship by examining how two forms of national identities (ethnic and civic) affect attitudes towards democracy in 30 European countries. Individual data comes from the European Social Survey (2008). The results indicate a significant and strong association between national identities and attitudes towards democracy. Individuals who articulate high levels of ethnic nationalism are less supportive of democracy than those who express high levels of civic nationalism. At country level, two variables are used: diversity and the extent to which democracy is established. Data that describes level of diversity comes from the Eurostat (2008) The index of democracy comes from Economist Intelligence Unit (2008). The structure of the dataset is hierarchical; therefore I have used multilevel models to avoid obtaining biased coefficients and standard errors. The study shows that higher levels of diversity and democracy, in general, amplify support for democracy, but, a high degree of diversity amplifies the negative relationship between ethnic nationalism and support of democracy and a high degree of democracy amplifies the positive relationship between ethnic nationalism and preferences for non-democratic rule.

Salvador

The hero and the image of nationalism in Colombia, The sculptures at "Parque del Centenario" (1883-1958). The main objective of this master thesis is to analyze and determine the relationship between the construction of the pantheon of heroes1 in Colombia and the attempt to consolidate a national identity in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. This problem is analyzed through a case study that focuses on a specific public space in Bogotá: "El Parque del Centenario". This space was built in 1883 for commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Simon Bolivar's birthdate. The research was conducted as an analysis that puts on dialogue different kinds of historical sources. Therefore, the use of images representing the monuments; maps and plans of the park and the city were; but above all, the main sources of analysis are newspapers and magazines which circulated between 1880 and 1958. The analysis of this case study is presented as a historical narrative that aims to provide relevant information about the construction and development of this public space. This text is divided into three chapters that chronologically follow the progress of the park. The first chapter covers the period between 1883 and 1910. This section focuses on the celebration of the centenary of Bolívar's birth. There will...
