Pedro II. During the period in which he was in charge of that institution, Ramiz Galvão planned to make that space the library of the Brazilian nation. That meant creating an institution whose functions were to safeguard the Brazilian documentary heritage, make it available to specialized groups, and encourage studies on the history and geography of the country. The goal was to make the National Library a place of reference, consonant with their European counterparts and in dialogue with the national literate media. In this context, Galvão had a fundamental role in the creation of a network of sociability that linked him to scholars, booksellers, bibliophiles and librarians from different parts of Brazil, America and Europe. This doctoral dissertation evaluates the Ramiz Galvão’s proposal to recast the National Library, trying to associate it with a larger project of construction of the Brazilian nation. For this, three elements considered as the main factors in the process of building a national Library were investigated: 1) the creation of a service routine, which was able to transform a small space with books of the former Royal Library into the most important library in Brazil; 2) the effort of acquiring and selecting a Brazilian documentary heritage, and making it available in publications, such as the Anais da Biblioteca Nacional (Proceedings of the National Library) and the Catálogo da Exposição de História do Brasil (Catalog of the Exhibition of History of Brazil), which are two of his most important works as a director; and 3) the role of Ramiz Galvão as a cultural mediator in the Brazilian literate environment of the late nineteenth century.

Penser l’interprétation des sonates françaises pour piano et violon au XIXe siècle (1800-1870) : des sources au concert / From Sources to Concerts : the Interpretation of French Sonatas for Violin and Piano from the 19th-Century (1800-1870)

Kubik, Cécile 15 November 2016 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the twofold issue of a violin repertoire and a performance practice, both of which had yet to be explored. French sonatas for piano and violin ranging from the 1800s to the 1870s are unveiled. Their interpretation is also discussed. The performance practices of French violinists are studied from a historical perspective. The Melos database, two previously unpublished inventories, the analysis of numerous sources and testimonies, including an extensive corpus of 19th-century French violin methods and the annotated scores from the French National Library’s Baillot collection are used to tackle this question in the light of multiple criteria. The final purpose of this thesis is to combine theory and practice to bring about an interpretation of these little-known sonatas and to foster new tools for interpreters and scientists with a view to promulgate these works.

PubMed Commons: What Happened on the Way to the Forum? Retrospective Explanatory Case Study Research and Lessons Learned from the U.S. National Library of Medicine's Online Forum for Open Science

Farabough, Michelle Claire 12 1900 (has links)
The U.S. National Library of Medicine brought the intensifying interest in open science to national attention when it joined enthusiastic scientists to introduce and host an Amazon-like rating forum on PubMed—the world's largest database of indexed biomedical and life sciences literature. The result was PubMed Commons. In June 2013, the commenting forum was introduced for open discussion about published scientific literature as part of a three-pronged approach to improve research rigor, reproducibility, and transparency. In Feb. 2018, the forum was unexpectedly discontinued. This retrospective explanatory case study research asked the question, "What happened on the way to the forum?" Answers came from a variety of resources using multiple methodologies for data collection and analysis. Historical data from PubMed Commons' 7,629 comments and 1,551 commenters; key informant interviews with PubMed Commons editors; and a systematized search for published articles, gray literature; and social media content about PubMed Commons were analyzed using computer-mediated discourse analysis and a social network analysis. Results from the quantitative content analysis described a forum with little participation, and the qualitative content analysis demonstrated that active forum members were focused primarily on providing links to other information resources and discussing aspects of post-publication peer review. The social network analysis revealed a disconnected network, which was supported by a sociogram showing a community of independents with only seven small clusters. Findings pointed to 11 factors that affected the forum's adoption and use. Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory scaffolds a forum innovation agility model developed from this work to offer a better understanding of organizational processes and to aid organizations interested in introducing and managing a similar forum. PubMed Commons was a missed opportunity. No comparable alternative is available to promote open science and serve as a tool for the expected paradigm shift in the way we do scholarly communication in science.

The Democratizing Potential of Library Digitalization : Re-inventing the democratic mission of libraries

Grahn, Matilda January 2022 (has links)
This thesis examines how the democratic mission of public libraries has been affected by library digitalization by examining discourses on library digitalization in the Swedish national library strategy (2019). The research is based on a methodological framework combining a critical discourse approach with questions from Bacchi’s (2009) What’s the Problem Represented to Be? (WPR) methodology. The empirical analysis revealed a notable discrepancy between the discourse on the problems of digitalization and the proposed strategic reforms. On an implementation level, the apparent aim is to provide an incentive for increased funding of library digitalization projects by demonstrating their value through quantifiable measures. This could potentially explain why increased access would be one of the main priorities of the strategy, even if the outcome could contribute to the problem. The study concludes that the problems of digitalization demand that libraries evolve from passive informers to vigorous advocates for democratic values; reconsidering the idea that equality of access will lead to equity of access. Future strategies for library digitalization should explore how the societal obligations of libraries can be fulfilled in the digital age. This could result in a more proactive approach to digitalization; reaffirming their value as active contributors to political discourse.

O architektuře a médiích / On Architecture and Media

Juračková, Simona January 2013 (has links)

Simona Juračková O architektuře a médiích On Architecture and Media Praha 2013 Školitel: PhDr. Vladimír Czumalo, CSc. These doctoral theses deal with relationship between the architecture and the public, and a clarification of a role massmedia play in it. The particular affair related to the project of a new building for the National Library in Prague by architect Jan Kaplicky was choosed as a base of this work. Plans were designed in 2006 and 2007. The first chapter contains detailed descrioption of the affair and analysis of gathered material. It explores courses and ways mass media reflect choosen affair. And it also deduces conclusions relevant for the whole sphere of a mass media frame in which architecture operates. In the second chapter selected affair provides a background for the exploration of relationships between the architecture, the public and mass media; a special attention is paid to individual roles of each. The chapter is also dedicated to the language of the architecture and its specifics in the relation to the language used for the reflection of the architecture; to the readiness of the...

Bevaring av spelkulturen : En undersökning av spelkulturen på Kungliga biblioteket

Karlsson, Carina January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to examine the National Library of Sweden's ability to preserve the gaming culture. It will also look at what the subjects gaming culture and cultural heritage means. The source materials of the essay are mainly previous research of cultural heritage and gaming culture, plus some texts fom the National Library of Sweden and other offical laws and text, which makes this essay mainly a litterature study with some description theory. Through my studies of these earlier texts, the questions that emerged for me are the following: - How is culture heritage defined according to the academic world and the cultural world? - How can gaming culture be defined as a concept and a cultural heritage? - What does the preservation of the gaming culture look like at the National Library of Sweden?  The results show that cultural heritage is a difficult to specify subject, much like culture itself. In the end no two persons specify it the same, but I myself fell for the Swedish National Heritage Board's definition: all material and immaterial expressions of humans. Gaming culture is also quite difficult to specify, since many people see it as different things. Something all seems to agree on is that includes all kinds of expressions from humans. Hence, it should be obvious that it is a part of the cultural heritage. The Nation Library of Sweden includes several departements. For the one I interviewed it is not quite possible for them to preserve the gaming culture because of various laws. They want to, but cannot. Other departments might be able to collect those parts instead. So they might be able to preserve a complete picture of the gaming culture. So, I propose that citizens step in and take over the responsibility for preserving the parts of the gaming culture that parts of the National Library simply cannot access at the moment. Maybe the citizens can collaborate with local archives, or even the National Library of Sweden, and the gaming culture will still find a place in the archives in the end.

The importance of legislation in the provision of national and public library services in Zambia

Zulu, Paul 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Legislation plays an important role in the provision of public and national library services. However, in Zambia libraries that perform the functions of public and national libraries are operating without a legislative mandate. As a result, there is a fragmentation of library services as there is no single institution which performs all the functions of a national library service. Although several efforts were made before to enact national library service legislation, no Act of Parliament has been passed to date (2014). This study sought to provide empirical evidence to refine our insight of the benefits of having national library service legislation and the consequent implications of not having any legislation in the provision of library services. Quantitative data was collected through questionnaire administration to public library staff; interviews with senior government officials, and executive members of the ZLA and ZALICO; and document analysis on text from grey literature. The existence of the statistical significance of association between “Importance of library legislation” and “Provision of library services in Zambia” was measured and confirmed using Pearson chi-square χ2. Public library facilities, services and collections in Zambia were found to be below par, and it was concluded that this was due to lack of library legislation. The study recommends that appropriate legislation that puts together the functions of public and national libraries under one institution be enacted in Zambia as soon as possible. It is also recommended that further research be undertaken to investigate the current status of library facilities, services and collections in selected neighbouring countries where library legislation has been passed. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science)
