The role of agents, visitors and inspectors in the development of elementary education c.1826-c.1870

This thesis is an analytical examination of the inspectorates established by the British and Foreign School Society and the Anglican National Society between c. 1826-1870. Its aim is to demonstrate the important role their officials played in the development of a nation-wide system of elementary education in England and Wales. The thesis is divided into six chapters. The Introductory Chapter places the study in context by considering the concept of inspection in the nineteenth century. It examines 'state' inspectorates other than those for education, school inspection abroad and the long tradition of visitation and inspection by the Established Church. Chapter Two considers the appointment and development of HMIs between 1840-1870, providing an essential foundation and context for the subsequent chapters. Chapter Three examines the BFSS system of inspection. All aspects of this branch of the Society's work are considered including the reasons for the establishment of an inspectorate, the social backgrounds of the men appointed, the work they carried out and their changing and developing roles during this period. It not only reveals their important contribution to the work of their Society but also to national educational developments. Chapter Four focuses on the National Society's system of inspection and visitation. It considers the development of a three tier system during the 1840s with centrally appointed Inspectors, Diocesan Inspectors and Organising Masters. The issues central to the National Society's Inspectors' reports are also considered in detail. Chapter Five assesses the contribution made by the BFSS and National Society officials to the establishment of other school inspectorates. It then offers final analysis in Chapter Six on the significance of the work of the Agents and Inspectors of the two major Societies, not only for their respective organisations, but also for the development of nineteenth century elementary education.

<p>Abstract</p><p>Purpose/Aim: This essay deals with The Swedish Red Cross Society and their work concerning strategical information and communication about HIV and AIDS in the Swedish context. In a broader sense the relation between the global and the local will be investigated and a discussion about what it means to work in an organization operating on a global arena will be held.</p><p>Material/Method: This essay is based on relevant theories about culture and health communication which I have studied, selected and put together, with purpose to analyse The Swedish Red Cross Society and their informational work with HIV and AIDS- prevention. Furthermore I have interviewed four of the organizations co- workers to collect data about their experiences in working in the Red Cross organization with this specific mission. Moreover I and my colleague Hillevi Good attended at seminars and lectures to observe activities held by the organization and to get inside information about what people working with HIV and AIDS are discussing and considering as critical issues. The study holds a qualitative approach focusing on understanding this typical case rather then generalizing facts in a larger sense.</p><p>Main results: The Swedish National Society of The Red Cross has a difficult mission in their work to inform the public about HIV and AIDS, although it is the perfect organization when it comes to communication due to their well-known profile and a huge geographical spread. Foremost this is due to the fact that the problem in Sweden concerns attitudes rather than medical supplies, access to information and other more practical issues.</p><p>The Swedish citizen is individualistic and the HIV- problem does not exist in his/hers reality in the same way as in a high- endemic country, a fact that complicates information and communication. The organization is well aware of the situation and has a good informational approach with networking and education as examples among others, but this is not enough. Changing behaviour and attitudes takes a long time and a lot of resources that does not exist because of HIV and AIDS low priority in Sweden. Creation and invention of national political culture in Bohemia 1848-1868 -Mediation between social and cultural history- (Résumé) Taku Shinohara This thesis analyzes problems of building of Czech national society on the countryside in the time from the revolution of 1848 up to the consolidation of dual monarchy in 1868. We can distinguish building process of Czech society after the abolition of servitude in 1848 into three periods: a period from 1848/49 to 1870s, a period from 1870s to the turn of the centuries, and a period from the turn of the centuries to the age of the "total wars". The first period this thesis deals with can be characterized by fundamental transformations of peasants' society after the abolition of servitude and the gradual penetration of norms and life-styles of civil society. It was rather a loose network of the local honorables, such as a network of voluntary associations and communal autonomous bodies than a solid organization of any political party that enabled the mass mobilization of national movements. Gymnastik åt alla? : Propaganda, kropp och medborgerliga visioner i den svenska gymnastikrörelsen på 30-talet

This thesis argues that the Swedish Gymnsatics League during the 1930’s articulated, what in previous research has been called a citizenship project. This citizenship project was formulated against the backdrop of the widely held gymnastic ideological belief about a ‘sound mind in a sound body’. In the historical context regarding the contemporary problem concerning the qualitative issue of the people, the gymnasts formulated gymnastics as an activity, aimed to produce an ideal, healthy citizen. In 1934, the Swedish gymnastics started a propaganda organization called National Society for promotion of Gymnastics (Riksföreningen för gymnastikens främjande) and its yearbook. The organization aimed to educate, and convince the Swedish population with the ultimate objective to make them active participants, and practitioners in gymnastic body culture. I argue that the gymnasts, through propaganda media as the yearbook, and the gymnastics display, addressed audiences as civic publics, with the potential of, though gymnastics, obtain properties connected to the idea of the ideal citizen. Regarding the conceptions of the gymnasts’ citizenship ideals, the essay demonstrates how the gymnasts argued that ideal civic virtues was reflected in the individual’s aesthetical bodily properties, which ultimately signified health. Thus, they argued that the properties liked to the ideal citizen only could be obtained through physical exercise, and the cultivation of a ‘healthy’ body, via gymnastic exercises. In the mid-1930’s the Gymnastics League undertook an international mission to display the superiority of Swedish gymnastics in front of foreign audiences, primarily by performing a non-competitive display at the Olympics in Berlin. I argue that this international outlook produced, and enhanced the national significance, and citizenship producing purpose of the gymnastics, especially when transcribed and mediated in the National Society’s yearbook, hence with the aim of addressing Swedish publics. The strategy of convincing the Swedish population of participating in gymnastics, through international exposure culminated at the Lingiad in Stockholm 1939, where the Gymnastics League invited to world in celebration of the centennial memory of the death of Per Hendrik Ling, the creator of Swedish gymnastics. This event displayed en masse what could be achieved through gymnastics, and enhanced the universal significance of Swedish culture in producing ascetically, and therefore civically sound, national citizens.

The presented thesis deals with the publisher Jan Otto (1841-1916), who was one of the most important personalities of the Czech national society at the end of 19th and at the beginning of 20th century. Based on proper study of archival material his business activity in publishing and typographical field and his manager function in the biggest national Czech bank, Trade Bank, which Otto devoted over 40 years of his life is analysed. These are two basic thematic spheres of the thesis. The analysis of one of Czech economic nationalism manifests towards the end of 19th century which was a foundation of the company National business and industrial enterprise is a complementary supplement of this thesis. Otto was actually closely connected with the whole project. The thesis conclusion concentrates on Otto's identity question. The thesis is a case study for issues of national Czech business and banking elites.
