Étude comparative / Divinity in the Near East and in Egypt in the IIIrd and IInd Millennia B.C.E. A comparative study

Othman, Berenice 09 November 2013 (has links)
This study aims at questioning the notion of divinity as conveyed by the ancient cultures of Egypt and the Near East, on the basis of archaeological and written evidence. Starting from the first plausible representations of divine powers pictured as individual beings, around the end of the 4th millennium B.C.E., the investigation confronts iconographical and textual data in order to identify, for both cultural areas under discussion, the peculiarities of their conceptions of the divine, as well as their common features, during the 3rd and 2nd millennia. At that time, indeed, the religion of the Near East and that of Egypt concurred in many respects, either in the formal depiction of the divine or in its conceptual expression. Hence the question arises whether such similarities were the outcome of intrinsic developments or resulted from mutual influences. Interactions in the realm of religion grow more and more likely in the course of time, and they can be ascertained for the 2nd millennium, at least as far as iconography is concerned. It is a period of intensive contact between the Levant and the Nile Valley, an incentive to cultural intermingling. However, those exchanges did not happen at random: the reciprocal borrowing depended on political priorities or ideological stakes, as the study seeks to highlight. Some discrepancies stem from the very status religious texts held within their own societies, especially mythical literature. Ultimately, the principles of polytheism and the processes of « translation », of « syncretism », and the other interpretations it allows, are the central issue of this comparative approach.

: « Les objets en terre cuite avant l’invention de la poterie » / Clay objects at The Pre-Pottery Neolithic in the Near East, baked or not baked clay? : « The terracotta objects before the invention of pottery »

Arrok, Rania 29 January 2013 (has links)
The presence of clay objects is fairly common at Neolithic sites, including those sites in the Near East. In most cases the objects have a small size and occur in different shapes. These objects have a particular value to researchers. This thesis illustrates our research based on new data, which were provided by new excavations like those of Tell Halula, of Tell Aswad and Ain Ghazal. These new elements and their comparison with earlier data enabled us to followed the development of clay objects since their first appearance in the PPPA period and through the various stages of the Neolithic period: PPNA (9500-8700 BC), early PPNB (8700-8200 BC) and middle PPNB (8200-7500 BC). The geographical area considered for this research was limited to the Levant. The questions posed in this research are based first on the homogeneity/heterogeneity of the typology of these clay objects and their distribution at the sites in the region. Secondly, we also focused on production technique. After a detailed analysis of the whole corpus, the clay objects were grouped in several categories according to their type of representation: human figures, animal figures, “other objects” and small clay vessels. In the third part of the thesis we analysed and compared the development of the objects by period and by category.

BC / Bioanthropology and funerary practices of Near-East neolithic's populations : the impact of the Neolithisation : study of seven syrian sites - 9820-6000 cal. BC

Chamel, Berenice 30 September 2014 (has links)
The Neolithisation of the Near-East is a key period in the history of humanity, when huge changes occur in subsistence economy, triggered by agriculture and animal husbandry. Other changes in lifestyle are generated by sedentarization and eventually by the invention of pottery as container. The disruptions known by the Neolithic populations are to be found both in their health status and funerary practices. The sepultures and human remains from seven Syrian archaeological sites are studied in this work over the entire period of Neolithisation. The funerary practices become more complex over time, although the primary individual sepultures, with the corpse laid in a flexed position on one side, remain the standard for a long time. From the PPNA, some sepultures are directly associated with particular buildings, until specific burial areas appear towards the end of the PPNB. The bioanthropological study focuses on infectious diseases affecting bones and teeth and on stress indicators, with a selection of the most relevant features. The skeletons were thus systematically examined for signs of tuberculosis, periostitis, dental caries and abcesses, ante-mortem tooth loss, periodontal disease, dental hypoplasia, Cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis. A site by site study of health status changes was carried out first, then the individuals were gathered by period in order to bring to light the impact of the Neolithisation processes in a diachronic study. The advent of agriculture seems to have entailed an increase in dental pathologies and stress indicators in the early PPNB, and a peak of stress registered in the middle PPNB could be related to the introduction of animal husbandry, creating dietary deficiency and new infectious diseases. Most of the markers indicate a deterioration in health status during the last studied period, the Pottery Neolithic. This work establishes that changes in health status were far from linear; the different indicators pointing to fluctuations between the periods, with the most important changes featuring in the PPNB. Furthermore, it suggests that the severity of the pathologies evolved in a non linear way throughout the Neolithisation.

Histoire politique des royaumes du Sud-Sindjar à l'époque amorrite (XIXe-XVIIe siècle avant notre ère) / A political history of South-Sinjar kingdoms in the amorite period (XIXe-XVIIe century BCE)

Vollemaere, Benjamin 26 January 2016 (has links)
In a few decades, between the XXIst and the XIXth century, the appearance of Mesopotamia deeply changed because of the immigration on a massive scale of amorite populations which settled down and flooded upon the cities left unoccupied at the end of the previous century. The phenomenon particularly struck the Upper Mesopotamia in which there is a small area made singular owing to its topography : the plains south of the Jebel-Sinjar. This area has revealed only a few archaeological vestiges but the written documentation which was found in several sites inside or outside South-Sinjar (especially in Tell Hariri, Tell Leilan and Tell al-Rimah) brought many pieces of information about its geography, its inhabitants and their way of life, but also, and most importantly, about the political events which occurred there between the XIXth and the XVIIth century before our era. The issue of this thesis is to date, to order and to analyze these pieces of information in a double perspective. On one hand, it is about rebuilding the old environment and the historical geography of this area, aiming especially the location of the cities mentioned in these texts. Secondly, its political history will be studied, first of all throughout the description of the political and human groups which appeared there, kingdoms and tribal groups, and secondly through the analysis of the relationships between these entities. Finally, we will consider the issues represented in the area which explain the political decisions made by those kingdoms as well as the foreign interventions in the region.

Ancestral consultation : a comparative study of Ancient Near Eastern and African religious practices with reference to 1 Samuel 28:3-25

Mulaudzi, N. (Nkhumiseni) January 2013 (has links)
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the African and the Ancient Near Eastern tradition with regard to the ancestral consultation. 1 Samuel 28:3-25 was used as a point of departure. This text was used because it is the only text in the Hebrew Bible that shows the act of consulting the dead except those texts explicitly condemning the act. The study was divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 focused on the introduction and the research problem. Chapter 2 focused on the study of 1 Samuel 28:3-25 and this was done via and intratextual and intertextual analysis. The intratextual analysis of 1 Samuel 28:3-25 focused on the interrelatedness of the text on its literally level. This was done by means of a morphological, syntactical and structural analysis. The intertextual analysis focused on 1 Samuel 28:3-25 in relation with other texts in the Hebrew Bible, especially with reference to the practice of ancestral consultation. In Chapter 3 the main focus was on the Ancient Near Eastern tradition with regard to ancestral consultation and thus focused upon extratextual material. In this chapter, Mesopotamian and Israelite cultural practices were mainly considered. Customs relating to the act of consulting the dead were studied. It included funerary customs, death and mourning rites, the place and role of the dead in society. The study concluded that the act of ancestral consultation in the Ancient Near East was part of their religion. In Ancient Israel, however, it was prohibited by Yahwistic religion. Chapter 4 focused on ancestral consultation in African tradition. In this chapter, personal knowledge and experience were also important. Ancestral consultation in Africa is still a living tradition. The role of the ancestors was studied and also the role that the living have in relation to their ancestors. In this chapter the role of Christianity in Africa played pivotal role because Christianity shaped African religion of today. It is clear from the study that African Christianity still pays tribute to their dead relatives as they are believed to be closer to God. Both Christians and those who practice traditional religion agree on the role of the ancestors. In Chapter 5 the researcher brought together the information in Chapters 1 to 4. In that sense it can be regarded as the climax of the investigation into ancestral consultation as an ancient and modern cultural and religious practice. This chapter contains a comparison between African and Ancient Near Eastern tradition regarding ancestral consultation. The chapter indicates that there is a lot to compare between the two traditions, but one needs to consider the differences in time, religious perceptions, geography, economic and political background of the two traditions. This should especially be considered in evaluating the Ancient Near Eastern tradition because it is in the “archive”; we can only read and learn about it with reference to available sources, while African tradition is an existing one. In Chapter 6 the researcher summarised the main findings of the study with special reference to the research problem as discussed in the first chapter. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Ancient Languages / unrestricted

The policy of containment and the Middle East, 1946-1958

Samaan, Ahed George 01 January 1972 (has links)
The main objective of American foreign policy in the Middle East, during the post-War period of 1946-1958, was to safeguard the area against Soviet intrusions. This thesis attempts to examine the causes for the failure of the United States to achieve this objective. It concludes that this failure is the result of an alienation of the major national forces in the Middle East. The United States alienated the Arab world by openly and unreservedly supporting Zionist aims in Palestine. She alienated newly independent states by establishing close cooperation with Britain and France, their former colonial masters. She alienated revolutionary nationalists by supporting reactionary and traditional rulers against them and by opposing their ideals of neutrality and revolutionary change. In doing so, the United States opened the way for the Soviet Union to challenge her position and threaten her interests in the area. By emphasizing the military aspects of containment, she demonstrated a lack of understanding of the nature of the Soviet threat. The revolutionary nationalists sought to obtain military, economic, and technical aid without conditions or political strings. By insisting on imposing her conditions of alliance against communism and securing concessions and guarantees, including the safety and security of Israel, the United States made it impossible for the nationalist forces to cooperate with her. They, therefore, were forced to deal with the Soviet Union, whose aid was offered with no conditions or strings attached. The American response to isolate and weaken those states which accepted Soviet aid, through such means as the Eisenhower Doctrine, brought on a most serious deterioration in relations never before encountered by the United States and the most spectacular successes ever realized by the Soviet Union in the Middle East.

Through the Eyes of the Post: American Media Coverage of the Armenian Genocide.

Taylor, Jessica L. 09 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Many historians refer to the Armenian Genocide of 1915 as the first genocide of the twentieth century. In the context of the first global war, the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire were systematically persecuted and many eliminated while the world watched. Yet today, American memory and conception of the Armenian Genocide is remarkably different from similar historical events such as the Holocaust. The Armenian Genocide and America's reaction to it is a forgotten event in American memory. In an attempt to better understand this process of forgetting, this thesis analyzes the Washington Post's news coverage of the Armenian Genocide. By cataloguing, categorizing, and analysizing this news coverage, this thesis suggests Americans had sufficient information about the events and national reaction to it to form a memory. Therefore, the reasons for twenty-first century collective loss of memory in the minds of Americans must be traced to other sources.

A History of the Missionary Activities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Near East, 1884-1929

Lindsay, Rao H. 01 January 1958 (has links) (PDF)
In the wake of the Protestant penetration into the Near East, Jacob Spori was sent to Constantinople in 1884 to open a mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. Spori and later his companion, Joseph M. Tanner, preached first to the Europeans of Constantinople, then projected their efforts down into the major cities of Palestine. Among the German colonists, the missionaries found several valuable converts, most of whom emigrated to Utah.Ferdinand F. Hintze gained the title "Father of the Armenian Mission" through his extensive preaching tours throughout the interior of Asia Minor. He found the Armenians to be curious, imaginative, creative, but lacking in leadership ability and stability, being very enthusiastic for a cause one day and a few months later wanting nothing to do with it. It was among these Armenians that the Mormon mission developed.

The Arab Boycott of Israel

El Kadi, Hussein Abu-Bakr 01 January 1960 (has links) (PDF)
An intelligent understanding of international relationships requires a special study of the critical places where continuous crisis arises. It was felt, therefore, desirable to examine a significant aspect of the conflict between the Arab World and the State of Israel that provides the subject of this study. The economic boycott of Israel has assumed a grave significance in international relations, yet to the author's knowledge this subject has not been investigated in a scholarly and comprehensive manner in any available publication. The writer embarks on this topic in the hope that it may provide the American student of Middle Eastern affairs with the essential data for its clear understanding.

н. э.: организация, комплектование, командный состав : магистерская диссертация / Roman army in the eastern provinces of the Empire in the first century A.D.: organization, recruitment, commanding officers

Д., Nazarov, A. D. January 2016 (has links)
В I в. н. э. / The dissertation is devoted to evolution of the Roman military-administrative system in the Eastern provinces of the Empire in the first century A. D. During the studied period, Rome was beginning transition from offensive wars to defense of the frontiers. In the same time, the provinces of the Empire began to play a greater role in the state. These processes contributed to transformation of the Roman armed forces, which were evolutionary character. Roman foreign policy activity in the Near East allows suggesting, that this region is the most representative for research of evolution of the Roman military organization in the first century A. D. The author ascertained that special aspects of the Roman military machine in the Eastern provinces of the Empire (dislocation of the armed forces, organization of defense of the frontiers, supply and recruitment of various military units) depended on foreign policy situation and complex of internal political reasons.
