Heterosis and Heterosis Retention for Reproductive and Maternal Traits in Nellore-Angus Crossbred Cows

Obeidat, Mohammad Diya Talal Hamed 16 December 2013 (has links)
Calving rate, weaning rate, birth weight, weaning weight, and ADG from 1997 to 2011 were investigated in Angus, Nellore, F_(1) Nellore-Angus, first generation 3/8 Nellore 5/8 Angus produced as following: (1/2 Nellore 1/2 Angus sires and 3/4 Angus ¼ Nellore dams, 3/4 Angus 1/4 Nellore sires and 1/2 Angus 1/2 Nellore dams, and ¾ Nellore 1/4 Angus sires and Angus dams), and second generation 3/8 Nellore 5/8 Angus cows. The objectives were to estimate heterosis in Nellore-Angus crosses for cow reproductive traits and maternal effects on traits of their calves. The F_(1) cows expressed 0.20 ± 0.02 heterosis for calving rate, while both first and second generation 3/8 Nellore 5/8 Angus expressed 0.13 ± 0.02. the first generation 3/8 Nellore 5/8 Angus produced out of 3/4 Angus 1/4 Nellore sires and 1/2 Nellore 1/2 Angus dams expressed 0.14 ± 0.03 heterosis for calving rate. The F1 Nellore-Angus expressed 0.23 ± 0.03 heterosis for weaning rate and the 3/8 Nellore 5/8 Angus produced out of 3/4 Angus 1/4 Nellore sires × 1/2 Nellore 1/2 Angus dams and the second generation 3/8 Nellore 5/8 Angus expressed 0.14 ± 0.07 and 0.15 ± 0.05, respectively. No heterosis was expressed for birth weight in any breedtype group. Multiple attempts to analyze weaning weight and ADG and estimate heterosis resulted in excessive adjustments to least squares means. Young and oldest cows weaned lighter calves than others. F_(1) cows weaned heavier calves at most ages. Nellore-sired F_(1) calves were heavier at weaning than the reciprocal cross. Calves out of cows of intermediate ages had larger preweaning ADG than calves born to 2- and 3-yr-old and to aged cows. Generally, calves out of F_(1) Nellore-Angus cows had larger ADG than those out of cows of other breedtypes. Nellore-sired F_(1) heifers had lower ADG than Angus-sired F_(1) heifers. In general, bull calves had larger ADG than heifers. Non-F_(1) crossbred cows expressed slightly larger heterosis than what would be expected by the dominance model. Heterosis expressed by second generation 3/8 Nellore 5/8 Angus for calving and weaning rate did not appear to differ from the first generation.

Evaluation of Gene Breed Type and Expression of Feed Efficiency Candidate Genes, and Their Associations with Carcass Traits in F2 Nellore-Angus Steers

Cardin, Jessica Marie 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Steers produced in Cycle I of the Texas A & M University McGregor Genomics Project (n = 232, F2 Nellore-Angus) were evaluated for carcass composition, visceral organ weights, and model predicted residual consumption (MPRC), a measure of feed efficiency. Hot carcass weight was strongly correlated with liver weight (r = 0.70, P < 0.001) heart weight (r = 0.58, P < 0.001), and viscera weight (r = 0.55, P < 0.001) but not spleen weight (r = -0.01, P = 0.83). Liver, heart and viscera weights were moderately positively correlated with external and kidney pelvic heart fat (KPH), but not with marbling. None of the organ weights were correlated with MPRC. A subset of 54 animals was selected for extreme values of residuals of MPRC after a mixed model analysis that included fixed effects of sire and family nested within sire, and these animals were evaluated for insulin-like growth factor I (IGFI) expression in liver samples collected at harvest through quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). IGFI relative quantity (IGFI RQ) was collected from qRT-PCR and was correlated with liver (r = -0.23, P = 0.09), spleen (r = 0.48, P <0.001) and viscera weight (r = 0.24, P = 0.08), but not any carcass trait or MPRC residual. Gene breed types were determined for 4 candidate genes of feed efficiency: insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF1), leptin (LEP), neuropeptide-Y (NPY) and ghrelin (GHRL). Gene breed types were represented as AA, AN, NA, and NN where A and N denote Angus and Nellore, respectively, and paternal inheritance is listed first. Given that contemporary group significantly influenced most traits (MPRC, all carcass traits, liver weight and viscera weight), effects of gene breed type and contemporary group were evaluated together in analyses. GHRL influenced liver (P = 0.02) and viscera weight (P = 0.02), IGF1 influenced kidney, pelvic, and heart fat (P = 0.05), NPY influenced liver weight (P = 0.03) and hot carcass weight (P = 0.04), and LEP influenced ribeye area (P = 0.05) and hot carcass weight (P = 0.04) with a tendency to influence liver weight (P = 0.06). Alternate heterozygotes for GHRL were statistically different in liver weight and viscera weight where NA was heavier than AN. Alternate heterozygotes for LEP did not differ in ribeye area, hot carcass weight, or liver weight. Alternate heterozygotes for NPY differed in liver weight (NA heavier than AN), but did not differ in hot carcass weight. Carcasses with AA for LEP and NPY were 18 to 19 kg heavier (P < 0.05) than those with NN, with heterozygotes intermediate.

January 2011 (has links)
These animals were confined for 96 days and were fed with diets containing sugar cane (var. IAC86- 2480) and concentrate with different sources of oil, protected or not from ruminal degradation, all diets possessed the roughage:concentrate ratio of 40:60 in dry matter. After the fedlot period the animals were sent to a commercial abattoir, stunned and slaughtered, and soon after the carcass cooling, a section which included the 9th to 13th rib from Longissimus thoracis muscle and a standardized cut of Biceps femoris were removed, according to the establishment. The design was randomized blocks with five treatments and seven replicates and the averages were compared by orthogonal contrasts. The analysis of meat quality showed no significant differences in shear force (SF), pH, meat and fat color and cooking losses. The water holding capacity (WHC) showed differences and the linseed protected oil treatment showed higher values compared to the others (73.67% vs. 70.89%, respectively). The sensory evaluation done by trained tasting panel, statistically analyzed by nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, showed differences for the variables: appearance, tenderness and juiciness and the lowest scores were assigned to the meat of animals fed with linseed protected oil. The highest score was obtained from animals fed with soybean oil. No differences were found for loin cholesterol, and the values of this variable was lower for meat from animals fed soybean oil compared to other oils. We observed lower values for soybean protected oil... Desempenho, metabolismo e emissão de metano de bovinos Nelore em terminação recebendo óleos funcionais em substituição ou combinação com monensina sódica na dieta / Performance, metabolism and methane emission of Nellore finishing cattle receiving diets containing functional oils in replacement or combination with monensin

Chagas, Lucas Jado 24 August 2015 (has links)
The emergence of increasingly demanding consumer markets as food safety is a growing reality. The ban on antibiotic growth promoters such as monensin, by the European Union is indicative of this. Thus, research looking for alternatives to antibiotics, has been intensified in the last decade, with research works aimed at exploring and developing economically attractive alternative to animal production. In this sense. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of active ingredients extracted from cashew oils and castor as modulators of ruminal fermentation alternative to monensin. Six experiments were carried out. A performance experiment with animals confined in order to measure the GPD, CMS, feed efficiency, carcass characteristics. Another experiment to evaluate metabolic characteristics with the assessment of CMS, digestibility, ruminal fermentation characteristics, oxygen consumption, heat and methane production. Also an in vitro experiment for evaluation of gas production and colonization time was conducted. This set of three experiments was carried out on two base diets, one with ground corn and other with byproducts. Ground corn basal diet consisted of 12% of tyfton hay, 80% of ground corn, 4% soybean meal, 2.5% mineral mixture and 1.5% urea. The treatments were: T1 - control, which consisted of basal diet, no additives; T2 - basal diet with addition of sodium monensina (30 mg / kg DM); T3 - basal diet added Essential® (300 mg / kg DM); and T4 - basal diet added Essential® (500 mg / kg DM). The bast dosis of functional oils were used in a second trial that used combination of functional oils and monensis. In the second trial was used a byproducts base diet comprised 5% of sugar cane bagasse, 50% of wet corn gluten feed, 43.5% of soybean hulls, 1.5% mineral mixture, being evaluated the following treatments: T1 - control, which consisted of basal diet without additives; T2 - basal diet with addition of sodium monensina (25 mg / kg DM); T3 - basal diet added Essential® (300 mg / kg DM); and T4 - basal diet with addition of sodium monensin (25 mg / kg DM) plus Essential® (300 mg / kg DM). For metabolism experiment with diet from corn was used bagasse as roughage and treatments were: T1 - control, which consisted of basal diet without additives; T2 - basal diet with addition of sodium monensina (25 mg / kg DM); T3 - basal diet added Essential® (300 mg / kg DM); and T4 - basal diet with addition of sodium monensin (25 mg / kg DM) plus Essential® (300 mg / kg DM). Functional oils supplementation improves performance of feedlot cattle during the initial phase with the non-use of additives or the use of monensina only. However , this advantage is not maintained over the total period of feedlot. In study, evaluated additives did not contribute to the increase feedlot cattle performance and to reduce their environmental impact.

Suplementação com diferentes aditivos para bovinos em pastagem no período das águas / Supplemantion with different feed additives for grazing bovines during rainy season

Garcia, Simone Aparecida 24 October 2014 (has links)
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the supplementation with different feed additives on feed intake and average daily gain for grazing Nellore bovines during the rainy season. On the experiment I, 48 Nellore heifers (266 kg BW) were distributed in four treatments, and each animal was considered one experimental unit. The treatments were organized in a factorial 2x2, two types of supplements (mineral supplement and mineral protein-energy supplement) and two levels of monensin (0 and 1200 ppm in the mineral supplement, 0 and 60 ppm in the mineral protein- energy supplement). In the study II, 60 Nellore calves of 300 kg (BW) were distributed in 4 treatments of 15 animals each. Treatments consisted of the inclusion of: mineral supplement (control treatment), mineral supplement with virginiamycin (1333ppm), mineral supplement with salinomycin (1111 ppm) e mineral supplement with monensin (1000ppm). In both studies, animals were allocated in four rotational stocking areas (6,7 hectares each area) of Brachiariadecubens. Statistical analyses were conducted using the software SAS. In the experiment I, the consumption of the mineral proteic supplement, with and without monensin, was higher compared to the others treatments (P<0.05) and the monensin did not cause any significant decrease on the supplement intake. Animals who received protein mineral supplement had higher average daily gain than animals who received mineral supplement (P<0.05) and there was no effect of monensin on the weight gain. In the experiment II, the inclusion of monensin reduced the consumption compared to the control treatment (P<0.06). The supplement with virginiamycin did not affect the consumption on the day 56, however the supplements with salinomycin and monesin reduced the consumption compared to the control treatment (P<0.05). The average daily gain was statically different among treatments on the days 28 and 84, however there was a reduction on consumption of all treatments. The average daily gain among animals supplemented with different feed additives did not differ statically, but the treatments with the inclusion of virginiamycin and salinomycin had higher gains than the control treatment. The virginiamycin anda salinomycin caused increase weight gain and the salinomycin and monensin reduced the consume.

Caracterização do metaboloma sérico de bovinos Nelore e sua potencial associação à eficiência alimentar / Serum metabolite characterization and their potential association with feed efficiency in Nellore cattle

Novais, Francisco José de 07 July 2017 (has links)
Animal selection for residual feed intake (RFI) is intrinsically associated with decreased consumption of dry matter independent of body weight gain, selecting yielding increased production and economic efficiency but also decreasing the greenhouse gas emission of livestock. In this study, serum samples of 16 animals selected for divergent feed efficiency were collected prior to feedlot (day -21) and evaluated in an untargeted metabolomics approach, with the goal of using differential analysis, co-expression analysis and functional enrichment to identifier markers for feed efficiency prior to the feedlot. One feature was differentially accumulated between low and high RFI. WGCNA analysis identified 22 and 25 modules in positive and negative mode, respectively, of 1 module of each mode was strongly associated with RFI (r= 0.53, p-value <0.05 and r=0.52, p-value < 0.1 to negative and positive mode, respectively). Pathway enrichment analysis yielded 13 biological processes associated with feed efficiency including alterations in vitamins liposoluble metabolism, inflammation, oxidative stress, amino acid metabolism and fatty acid metabolism. Our findings suggest the possibility to identify a biomarker for feed efficiency and also discuss that differences in oxidative stress responses and inflammatory processes could explain the feed efficiency variation prior to feedlot.

Yamada, Paulo Henrique January 2016 (has links)

Efeito de diferentes concentrações de quitosana na dieta de novilhos Nelore / Effect of different levels of chitosan in Nellore steers diet

Araújo, Ana Paula Chaves de 15 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of chitosan on intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, ruminal microbial protein, balance of energy and nitrogen and blood parameters. Eight Nellore steers cannulated in the rumen were divided into two 4 x 4 balanced Latin squares. The daily doses of chitosan were 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg BW respectively the treatments Q0 (Control), Q50, Q100 and Q150. The diets consisted of corn silage and concentrate in ratio 60:40 and the chitosan were inserted directly through the ruminal cannula, twice a day before feeding. Daily weights of the amounts of corn silage and concentrated supplied, and the orts refused of each animal, were recorded for estimate the nutrient intake. Samples of orts and feedstuffs were analyzed for composition and subsequent nutrient intake calculation. For determination of total apparent digestibility of nutrients, the total amount of fecal dry matter excreted was estimate by indigestible detergent acid fiber (ADFi). The feces were collected in the 15th until the 18th day of each experimental period, and frozen in freezer at -20°C. In the end of the collection period it was made composed sample by animal with base in the dry matter, and analyzed. Samples of ruminal fluid were collected at 0 (before feeding) and 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours after feeding. Spot urine samples were collected on day 16 of the experimental period. The estimation of microbial protein synthesis was performed by the method of total excretion of purine derivatives. Blood samples were collected by puncture of jugular vein. Intakes (kg/d) of DM, OM, CP, ether extract , total carbohydrates , non-fiber carbohydrates and TDN were not different, however, NDF intake decresead quadratically (P<0,05) when expressed as kg/d and percent of BW. Digestibility in the total digestive tract increased linearly to NDF, DM, OM as well as improved the digestibility of CP and TC, accordingly there was a positive effect on TDN with the inclusion of chitosan. All the ruminal fermentation parameters were influenced by the time after feeding. The NH3-N concentration decreased quadractically with Q150 treatment and there were no difference in total VFA concentration, however the individual VFA proportions were affected. Propionate concentration was higher with Q150 and similarly increasing linearly the proportion of propionate (P<0,05) which means an increase of 7.47% (Q0 vs. Q150). Chitosan decreased linearly the molar proportion of acetate and butyrate .Was observed linear and quadratic decrease effect on acetate: propionate ratio. The plasmatic metabolites and enzymes had no effect by the treatments, nevertheless the glucose concentration was markedly superior with the supplementation corresponding to an increase of 18.58%, 26.35%, 23.68% for Q0 versus Q50, Q100 e Q150 respectively. The energy and nitrogen balance had no effect with the treatments, however there was a decrease of fecal total nitrogen (%) excretion. Chitosan when used as modulator of ruminal fermentation resulted in changes that allow its use as an alternative to the use of ionophores for cattle without showing damage to the health of the animal.

This work aimed to evaluate chemical and physical body composition, as well as the nutritional requirements of Nellore x Red Angus (NRA), dairy crossbreed (DC) and Nellore (NEL) steers supplemented in Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú pasture. Twenty-four steers of each genetic group with 350, 263 and 293 kg of live weight (LW), respectively, were supplemented with 0.2, 0.6 and 1.0% of LW during rainy season and with 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2% of LW during dry season. Chemical composition was estimated by equations chose in some references. During rainy season, body was composed in average by 59% of water, 17% of protein (CP) and 17% of ether extract (EE). During dry season, NEL steers had higher EE (23%) and lower CP (17%) than NRA steers (18% EE and 18% CP). The DC steers showed lower EE (17%) and similar content of protein in relation to NEL steers. In terms of net requirement of steers weighting from 250 to 500 kg, protein ranged from 160 to 140 g.kg-1 of gain of empty body weight (EBWG) or from 135 to 121 g.kg-1 of body weigh gain (BWG); energy ranged from 2.98 to 3.98 Mcal.kg-1 EBWG or from 2.52 to 3.45 Mcal kg-1 of BWG. In relation to carcass yield relative to EBW, NEL steers were superior (64%) to DC steers (62%) and similar to NRA (63%). Supplementation did not change carcass yeild and organs proportion. Bone proportion was sub-estimated and comestible tissue (CT) super-estimated. The NEL steers deposited more fat and less muscle (31% and 55%) than NRA (26% and 59%) and DC (23% and 60%). There was no effect of supplementation on bone:muscle ratio, but percentage of estimated fat was higher in steers supplemented with the two highest levels. Key-words: dairy crossbreed, equations, industrial crossing, HH section, Nellore, supplementation.
