The heritage of Dunkerque : A socio historical, contextual, and textual analysis of Christopher Nolan’s mediation of cultural memory and creation of identity in Dunkirk

Hågbäck, Moa January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to analyse the mediation of cultural memory in Christopher Nolan’s newest production Dunkirk. Furthermore, the audiences are supposed to identify and create meaning from cultural memories they have not inherited. This problem will therefore be analysed in relation to the mediation of cultural memory. A critical discourse analysis will mark the cornerstone of a methodical analysis model, followed by a semiotic textual analysis. Both the discourse and semiotic analysis will be preceded by a socio historical theory of contemporary ideology.    Dunkirk assumes the form of a popular-cultural text itself, and will therefore be analysed as such. With the help of cultural-historical concepts such as identity creation and collective, cultural and prosthetic memory the study in question will supply a relevant contribution through analysis and result. The result itself concluded that Nolan dedicated his depiction of the events at Dunkerque to the people and civilians.  Through heavily romanticised depictions of civilian efforts, small boats in focus, and the intimate narratives of the soldiers’ struggles, the identification easily cements itself in the audience through sheer emotional investment with the characters and the intricate social hierarchies they produce through isolation and exclusion. In relation to mediating a cultural memory through popular-culture film, these possibilities of identification also create possibilities of prosthetic memories to develop, through which audiences undertake cultural memories they are not entitled to by heritage.

Med staden i förgrunden : Gotham City enligt Christopher Nolan / The City in the Foreground : Gotham According to Christopher Nolan

Wiklund, Frans January 2020 (has links)

Distant Stars Become Future Homes: The Close Relationship of Interstellar Between Hard Science-Fiction and Spectacle

Davis, Gabriel 01 May 2021 (has links)
Hard Science-fiction shares a close relationship with the element of spectacle. This is especially apparent in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014), a film based in realistic science and emotional appeal. Nolan makes use of creating a team comprised of creative minds with different backgrounds. This includes theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, co-writer Jonathan Nolan, and composer Hans Zimmer. Together, the four develop a film that focuses on three main facets of science: time dilation, black holes, and dimensions. Incorporating these elements based in the historical world gives Interstellar its classification as hard science-fiction, a genre based more solidly in realistic science than classical science-fiction. Thorne serves as an executive producer and advisor to all matters scientific, Zimmer composes the score to accompany and intensify the moments of spectacle, and the Nolan brothers serve to create the plot behind Interstellar. The film’s spectacle can be seen throughout, notably in the “Miller’s Planet” and “Gargantua” scenes. Nolan also incorporates Welsh Poet Dylan Thomas’s “Do not go gentle into that good night” to exemplify the film’s theme of perseverance against increasing odds. It is through these elements that Interstellar serves itself as an exemplary film for showcasing the relationship between the nature of hard science-fiction and spectacle.

An Average Regiment: A Re-Examination of the 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry of the Iron Brigade

Crocker, Jared Anthony January 2016 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment is one of the most famous regiments of the Civil War through its membership in the Iron Brigade of the Union Army of the Potomac. This brigade has been hailed as an elite unit of the Civil War. This thesis is a regimental history which critically examines the socio-economic profile of the 19th Indiana and the combat record of the Iron Brigade. This thesis finds that the 19th Indiana is largely reflective of the rest of the Union Army in terms of its socio-economic profile. Also, the combat record of the brigade was not overly successful and not necessarily deserving of being singled out from among the hundreds of other brigades in the Civil War.

This research uses the theory of stages of growth, substantiated by the studies of Richard L. Nolan in the 70s. The academic literature related to stages of growth models and the context of IS study field, provide the conceptual bases for this study. The research identifies a framework with its constructs related to the growth stages of the organizational initiatives of ICT/IS, starting from Nolan´s second level of benchmark variables, and proposes its implementation with the creation and development of a scale. With exploratory and descriptive characteristic, the research brings theoretical contribution to the paradigm of the stages of growth theory, adding a new growth process in its conceptual structure. As a result, it is provided a bilingual scale instrument (Portuguese and English), as well as, recommendations and rules for application of a survey type research instrument, to the continuity of this study. As a general implication of this research, it is expected that its use and application in measuring the stage level assessment of ICT/IS in organizations, can assist two types of individuals: academicians who study this thematic, as well as, practitioners seeking answers to their practical actions in organizations where they work.

Torre, Axel 08 1900 (has links)
This research-creation master’s thesis explores the different modalities of the representation of the Theory of Relativity, developed by Albert Einstein in the beginning of the 20th century and focuses on time travel. The dissertation is divided into two parts: a research essay and a creation project. The first chapter of the research explains the basis of the Theory of Relativity and gives a brief history of time-travel in cinema. The second chapter analyses the movie Interstellar, produced by Christopher Nolan in collaboration with the American physicist Kip Thorne. This motion picture is a prime example of the Theory of Relativity in modern cinema. The creation section, presented here in a Video game narrative concept, is a video game project set during the Second World War, in which the player will have to travel through time in order to save humanity from the Nazis.

Ökad delaktighet för individen : Ett förbättringsarbete och en fallstudie om att införa ett systematiskt arbetssätt inom äldreomsorg / Increased participation of the individual : An improvement work and a case study introducing a systematic way of working in elderly care

Grönskog, Linda January 2022 (has links)
The improvement work was carried out in a nursing home and home care in municipal elderly care where the experience was that the work environment had shortcomings and that the work for the individual's participation needed to be developed. The purpose of the improvement work and the study was that through the introduction of a systematic way of working for increased participation for the individual, the individual's needs in the center (IBIC), that the care staff's work environment would be better while the individual's participation would be improved. The improvement work was based on Nolan's improvement model and through SWOT analysis, Ishikawa diagrams and an impact analysis, the understanding of the challenges that existed was developed. The improvement work meant training and increased knowledge within IBIC for the care staff. Work is underway to establish personal care plans with the participation of the individual and the individual's goals for their need of support. No positive results, this far, have been visible regarding this improvement work. The study was conducted as a case study with an abductive approach. By following the care staff´s perception of their work environment via focus group interviews and questionnaires, it can be concluded that there are tendencies towards an improved work environment by working with the older person´s participation and to perform a work that can be partially followed systematically.

How does Evangelism relate to social action in the theologies of Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan?

Levine, Lou Gordon. January 1996 (has links)
Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan both develop their understanding of evangelism and social action within the context of the struggle for a democratic South Africa. This understanding is determined by their own personal contexts and their social analysis of the South African situation. Within these contexts they develop their views of sin and salvation. These underlying issues, contexts and analyses are crucial to and part of their understanding of the relationship between evangelism and social action. This thesis sets out to consider the relationship between evangelism and social action in their theologies by considering the underlying issues that determine this relationship, before finally defining the exact nature ofthis relationship. It considers each theology individually first as each has developed over time in context and needs to be seen as a unified whole as it relates to the . issue of the relationship between evangelism and social action. It then compares their views with each other with insights from other views. Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan both see sin and hence salvation as personal and social, but Nolan understands these concepts as primarily social. Hence his understanding ofevangelism and social action expressed in evangelization is primarily social. It sees them relating in evangelization in an integrated, holistic way. However, in practice his emphasis on the need to take sides in the struggle and on salvation as primarily in and through the struggle leads to salvation becoming sometimes indistinguishable from human liberation. Thus evangelization also sometimes becomes indistinguishable from the struggle. Cassidy sees these concepts as firstly spiritual and then social and this determines his understanding of the relationship between evangelism and social action. He emphasises these as transforming every level of human relationships, but starting with a right relationship with God. Cassidy achieves a more balanced Evangelical view of partnership in mission but with an emphasis on evangelism and Nolan a somewhat more holistic liberationist theological view of an integrated relationship between evangelism and social action in evangelization but with an emphasis on social action. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1996.
