Sharing the moment's discourse : Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence and Albert Einstein in the early twentieth century

Crossland, Rachel Claire January 2010 (has links)
Using Gillian Beer's suggestion that literature and science 'share the moment's discourse' (Open Fields, 1996), this thesis explores the ideas associated with Albert Einstein's three revolutionary 1905 papers, examining the ways in which similar concepts appeared across disciplines during the early part of the twentieth century, and focusing in particular on their manifestation within the literary works of Virginia Woolf and D. H. Lawrence. The study seeks to distinguish between instances of direct influence and a shared contemporary discourse, arguing that the analysis of both is essential to studies within the field of literature and science. Part I focuses on concepts of duality and complementarity, considering Max Planck's introduction of the quantum, Einstein's development of light quanta, Louis de Broglie's wave-particle duality and Niels Bohr's principle of complementarity. It analyses other contemporary discussions of duality and complementarity, and explores Virginia Woolf's attempts to simultaneously express both sides of dualistic models, suggesting that Woolf is a complementary writer. Part II focuses on Einstein's theories of relativity, exploring D. H. Lawrence's adoption thereof in Fantasia of the Unconscious (1922), in particular his claim that 'we are in sad need of a theory of human relativity'. It argues that this proposed theory is directly relevant to Lawrence's fictional works, both those that precede Fantasia and those that follow it. It also analyses the impact on Lawrence of contemporary ideas of relativism, especially those of William James as expressed in Pragmatism (1907). Part III explores the ways in which both Woolf and Lawrence write about individuals within crowds. It considers the possible links between such scenes and Einstein's paper on Brownian motion as well as contemporary studies of crowd psychology. It suggests that individual characters within modernist works can be considered as similar to the individual particles suspended in a mass which exhibit Brownian motion.

Poésie et science(s) chez Saint-John Perse / Poetry and science(s) in Saint-John Perse’s work

Fels, Laurent 12 December 2014 (has links)
In his “Nobel Speech”, Saint-John Perse specifies that, for the scientist as well as the poet, “the questioning is the same on the same abyss, with only their investigative modes differing”. This statement prompted a more thorough analysis of the influence on Saint-John Perse’s poetry of both scientific knowledge and Henri Bergson’s philosophy, especially as the writer, further in his text, explicitly refers to Einstein and quantum physics. In his La structure poétique du monde : Copernic, Kepler, Fernand Hallyn emphasizes that ”poetics attend to the genesis of a hypothesis as a global phenomenon, which goes far beyond any established framework and develops along its own scheme - the result, undoubtedly, of logical and other determination and conditioning, but also a unique configuration, an original synthesis which, as a whole, requires a sui generis study of its structuring and the interaction of the elements framing and informing it”. In Les structures rhétoriques de la science de Kepler à Maxwell, he adds that “poetics must not totally be excluded from science: rather, the latter is endowed with its own poetics following specific rules and values.” In other words, there is interaction between poetic truth and scientific truth, with the “investigative modes” (Saint-John Perse) of the two differing, yet the object of the quest remaining the same. Hence arose the analysis of how the influences of Bergsonism, along with scientific knowledge, nourish the works of Saint-John Perse, which claim a cosmic perspective

Torre, Axel 08 1900 (has links)
This research-creation master’s thesis explores the different modalities of the representation of the Theory of Relativity, developed by Albert Einstein in the beginning of the 20th century and focuses on time travel. The dissertation is divided into two parts: a research essay and a creation project. The first chapter of the research explains the basis of the Theory of Relativity and gives a brief history of time-travel in cinema. The second chapter analyses the movie Interstellar, produced by Christopher Nolan in collaboration with the American physicist Kip Thorne. This motion picture is a prime example of the Theory of Relativity in modern cinema. The creation section, presented here in a Video game narrative concept, is a video game project set during the Second World War, in which the player will have to travel through time in order to save humanity from the Nazis.

Ett genis trovärdighet : En retorisk analys av Albert Einsteins vetenskapliga ethos / The Credibility of a Genius : A Rhetorical Analysis of Albert Einstein's Scientific Ethos

Göransdotter, Rebecka January 2018 (has links)
Albert Einstein published the English translation of Relativity: The Special and General Theory in the midst of two big events in 1920: the confirmation of the two theories of relativity and spacetime in 1919 and the Nobel prize in physics in 1921. The new global celebrity wanted to make the theories intelligible and readable for an international English-speaking audience, an audience that also included antagonistic scientists and even anti-Semites. The aim of this thesis is to do a rhetorical analysis of Einstein’s character, his ethos, in Relativity, with a specific focus on creation of credibility in regard to his historical context: scientific ideals, values and norms as well as the political and cultural tendencies in Europe during the early 20th century. This was done firstly by identifying the implied auditor. Secondly, based on the material, I have identified three stereotypes or characters – the professional idealist, the mentor and the internationalist –  which emphases different features and capacities that are crucial for the credibility of the text. Thirdly, by using these stereotypes and in regard to the specific historical context, I investigated how Einstein developed his primary ethos into a secondary ethos in the text. The rhetorical analysis of Einstein’s Relativity shows that his ethos stands in relation to the social and cultural perception of the virtuous epistemic scientist; to fight prejudices regarding being a Jewish-German theoretical physicist; and, noteworthy, a way to produce a well-needed international space – a crucial alternative to continue the positivistic knowledge production counter to the nationalistic project.

In Brazil the aging population has been growing considerably and the alternatives of assistance and resources for such population are still deficient. Families are seldom prepared to face the aging process of their relatives and, especially because of difficulties related to finances and home care, they eventually choose institutions. Living at a long term care institution can be the very elder s choice seeking to preserve their selves and their belongings so as to keep their life history alive. The natural aging process brings along numerous changes, with the loss or slowering of body response. Pathology prevention and symptom minimization allow aging people to attain a better quality of life, and various segments are assigned this task geriatric and gerontologic multidisciplinary teams, among them. Among the problems aging people face, the falls are relevant and worrying because of their consequences. Because falls are frequent and can bring injuries to the elderly, the present study gathered institutional fall protocols from the residents of the Residencial Israelita Albert Einstein who were involved in falls during a pre-established period and analyzed the number of falls, the form of their occurrence and who were involved in this type of event with the purpose of preventing new episodes as well as providing post-fall assistance / O atual cenário do envelhecimento traz consigo a necessidade de adaptação da sociedade visando atender as particularidades dos indivíduos envolvidos nessa etapa do ciclo vital.

Several strategies are being adopted, and the opening of Satellites Units is one of them and has been adopted by a private hospital in São Paulo. Considering this fact, the objective of this study was to carry through a case study on one of these units, analysing the financial and marketing impacts caused by the implantation of the satellite unit. For this analysis, internal information of the unit had been raised and interviews had been carried through with some managers or people who had relationship with the process of implantation and management of the unit. Futhermore, usuaries had been also interviewed, with the aim to detect theirs perceptions of the unit. The results showed that the users are very satisfied with the Unit. However, there is a clear dissatisfaction in relation to the covering of the supplementary assistance sector. By this fact, it has an important restriction in the access to the unit, that is the main explanation for the negative financial results that the Unit is presenting since its implantation. Due to this results, the unit needs to improve the relationship between the hospital adminsitration and the supplementary health assistance companies in order to revert such situation.

Uralt, ewig neu

Hennewig, Lena 13 November 2020 (has links)
Taking the Bauhaus signet, designed by Oskar Schlemmer in 1923, as a starting point, the present thesis examines the relationship between man and space – the two consistently named poles of Schlemmer’s work – within the œuvre of the Bauhaus master. It analyzes, questions and expands the assumption, at first glance suggested by the signet, that space and man are mutually dependent: The first chapter deals with man as the measure of all things. The type pursued by Schlemmer results, on the one hand, from his analysis of man via proportion and geometric studies by Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer and Adolf Zeising that lead to a certain calculability. On the other hand, Schlemmer uses physiognomic ideas of Richarda Huch and Carl Gustav Carus to depict a certain de-individualization. Based on the results of the first chapter, the second chapter deals with questions of space. It shows that Schlemmer’s considerations of theoretical space and architecture stem from Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity and are fed by Bauhaus debates on that same topic: Schlemmer regards space and architecture as subject to change and dependent on man; this theory is also strengthened by his writings and his only surviving architectural design. To examine the reverse influence of space on the human body, the third chapter adds the Kunstfigur (art figure) as another category to the established two poles of Schlemmer’s œuvre discussed in the literature: man and space. The chapter proves that the Kunstfigur generates its own corporeality through the influence of space, which is modifiable by movement. Besides that, said corporeality is also determined by an abstraction, in turn caused by costumes and masks. These items also influence the outer appearance of man.
