The Effect Of Conceptual Change Instruction On Understanding Of Ecology Concepts

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of conceptual change text oriented instruction accompanied by demonstrations in small groups (CCTI) on ninth grade students&rsquo / achievement and understanding levels of ecology, attitudes towards biology, and attitudes towards environment. The instruments used in this study were the Test of Ecological Concepts (TEC), the Attitude Scale towards Biology (ASB), the Attitude Scale towards Environment (ASE), and the Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT). All data were collected from the public high school in Balikesir in the Spring Semester of 2001-2002. 88 students from four classes and two teachers were included in this study. Two of the classes were called control group and two of them were called experimental group. While the TEC, ASE and ASB were administered to all of the students as pre- and post-tests, the TOLT were conducted as pre-test. Data related to the TEC, ASB, and ASE were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). The results of the MANCOVA showed that there was significant effect of the treatment which was the conceptual change texts oriented instruction accompanied by demonstrations in small groups on the TEC, while there were no significant effect of the treatment on the attitudes towards biology and attitudes towards environment.

This essay proposes a conception of the general jurisprudence as a conceptual analysis aiming at inquiring the fundamental theoretical concepts of a given legal system. The author clarifies her proposal by analysing its key-terms, and, in particular, by explaining what should be the object of the general jurisprudence, in which sense it should be said “general”, what should be its methods, its epistemic status and its relations with related disciplines. / En este ensayo, la autora propone una concepción de la teoría general del derecho como análisis de los conceptos teóricos fundamentales de un ordenamiento jurídico. Tal concepción, que no se pretende exclusiva, si no que bien puede convivir con enfoques diferentes y diferentes modos de entender la disciplina, está articulada por medio de un análisis del significado atribuido a sus términos-clave, mediante el cual se intenta mostrar cómo ésta conciba al objeto de la teoría general del derecho, su carácter de generalidad, su estatus epistemológico y sus relaciones con las disciplinas afines.

Hacia la convergencia mundial del marco conceptual para la preparación de los estados financieros / Towards a global convergence of the conceptual framework for preparing financial statements

Due to the current globalization in business and investments that generate a highly interrelated business world, it is a must to have a common standard in accounting that brings transparency and the real use of information. According to that, this article presents a comparative analysis of the conceptual framework for the preparation and presentation of financial statements of the two important international accounting models of normative use: the accounting standards established by the FASB and the IASB. The conceptual framework provides a guideline to prepare and present financial statements and at the same time it is a basis for the enactment of international financial reporting standards. To this day, there are some convergence agreements on conceptual frameworks between FASB and IASB, in charge of producing standards, which implies joint work in relation to their respective frameworks, with the purpose of developing a better conceptual framework, common for both institutions. With respect to this, in the article we can find proposals and reflections related to the convergence of conceptual frameworks, in order to enable the feasibility of a convergent framework as an important document in the revision and the issuance process of future international financial reporting standards. / Debido a la continua globalización de los negocios y la globalización de las inversiones, que genera un mundo de los negocios altamente interrelacionado, es imprescindible contar con estándares comunes en contabilidad que mejoren la transparencia y la utilidad de la información. En ese sentido, el presente artículo presenta un análisis comparativo del marco conceptual para la preparación y presentación de los estados financieros de los dos modelos contables internacionales importantes de uso normativo: las normas contables emitidas por el FASB y el IASB. El marco conceptual proporciona una guía para preparar y presentar estados financieros y sirve de base para emitir normas internacionales de información financiera. A la fecha existen acuerdos de convergencia de marcos conceptuales, entre los organismos emisores de normas FASB y el IASB, lo cual implica un trabajo conjunto sobre sus respectivos marcos conceptuales, con la finalidad de desarrollar un mejor marco conceptual que sea común para ambas entidades. Al respecto, en el artículo se plantean propuestas y reflexiones vinculadas al proceso de convergencia de marcos conceptuales, para aproximar la viabilidad de un marco conceptual convergente como documento base en el proceso de revisión y emisión de futuras normas internacionales de información financiera.

Projetos de SIG (Sistemas de Informação Geográfica), em geral, ainda não apresentam modelo conceitual de banco de dados geográficos. Os implementadores de SIG se preocupam com a aquisição dos dados (captura e adaptação), que é a etapa mais cara, e dão, ainda, pouca atenção à modelagem. A utilização de modelos conceituais faz com que os usuários controlem melhor sua base de dados e tirem maior proveito do SIG. O objetivo deste trabalho é definir um conjunto de procedimentos de engenharia reversa de bancos de dados espaciais que auxiliem na criação e manutenção de modelos conceituais para aplicações de SIG a partir de dados já existentes. Estes procedimentos podem contribuir para um aumento na qualidade dos SIG implementados, auxiliando na popularização da prática de modelagem conceitual de banco de dados geográficos. São estudados três formatos de transferência utilizados por usuários de SIG. A partir daí, é proposto uma arquitetura de sistema de engenharia reversa para SIG. / Even with the increasing use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), conceptual modeling of geographic databases (GDB) is not yet usual among GIS professionals. This fact can in part be explained by the professional profile of most GIS designers. They usually are more familiar with specific GIS applications than with database technology. Among them, one can find cartographers, geographers, agricultural engineers, and architects. Besides that, the cost of geographic data acquisition is so high that much important is given to acquisition plans during GIS design and less interest is given to the database design process. Especially first time designers do not perceive the importance of a database schema that is independent of a specific GIS product. Conceptual design preserves the independence between data types and the logical schema of the product. Moreover, relying on the GDB conceptual schema users can better understand what part of the geographic reality is represented in the database. The main goal of this research work is to define a set of reverse engineering procedures for spatial databases that can support either creation or evolution if conceptual GDB schemas. It is expected that these procedures can enhance the quality of GDB design as well as contribute to the popularization of GDB conceptual modeling. Three different geographic data input formats to GIS are investigated and a reverse engineering system architecture for them is proposed. Resulting conceptual (sub)schemas are based on the framework GeoFrame.

De acordo com essa teoria, os esquemas de imagem constituem elementos bási-cos para o exercício da linguagem, estruturando, pré-conceitualmente, nossa experiên-cia corpórea de mundo; eles são também utilizados em literatura e, segundo Turner (1996), constituem um excelente recurso para criar efeitos de sentido no texto literário. Dessa forma, constituem objeto de especial interesse projeções metafóricas de travessia estruturadas pelos esquemas de imagem, analisadas nessa obra de Guimarães Rosa, uma vez que a metáfora também é vista pela neurociência atual como um prin-cípio organizador do pensamento e da criatividade humana. Assim, utilizando principalmente os esquemas de PERCURSO e de DINÂMI-CA DE FORÇAS, este trabalho procura demonstrar a eficácia da aplicabilidade desses esquemas como subsídio para o entendimento de aspectos de Grande Sertão: Vere-das, especialmente o acima citado / This dissertation aims at employing the theory of Cognitive Linguistics, spe-cially the image schema and the conceptual integration frameworks to analyze the ex-cerpts where the relationship between Riobaldo e Diadorim is explored by Guimarães Rosa in Grande Sertão: Veredas. According to this theory, image schemas are the basic elements that underlie language performance, structuring preconceptually our world bodily experience; they are also employed in literature and, according to Mark Turner (1996), constitutes an excellent resource for creating meaning effects in literary texts. Accordingly metaphorical projections of crossing structured by image schemas analyzed in this title by Guimarães Rosa are object of special interest, inasmuch they are seen by present neuroscience as an organizer principle of thought and human crea-tivity. Therefore, by employing SOURCE-PATH-GOAL and FORCE DYNAMICS image schemas, this work seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of the applicability of those schemas as a base for understanding aspects of Grande Sertão: Veredas, par-ticularly the ones reported above

A motivação para esta pesquisa é a problemática do ensino de gramática, fortemente associado à estrutura e à classificação dos elementos linguísticos. Para o estudo das orações subordinadas substantivas, foi composto um corpus com textos do tipo narrativo (romances, contos e notícias) e do tipo argumentativo (artigos de opinião, textos de divulgação científica e artigos acadêmicos). Dentre as orações encontradas nesse corpus, as mais frequentes foram as predicadas por verbos dicendi, verbos de atividade mental e pela construção “ser + adjetivo”, portanto as orações subordinadas substantivas objetivas diretas e as subjetivas. Segundo os pressupostos da Gramática Discursivo-Funcional (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008) e da teoria cognitivista da Integração Conceptual (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002), observaram-se aspectos subjetivos codificados nessas construções sintáticas, motivados pelas intenções comunicativas do Falante e pela maneira como ele conceptualiza o mundo ao seu redor. Em termos pragmáticos, as orações estudadas correspondem a estratégias de que o Falante dispõe para demonstrar maior ou menor comprometimento com o que diz, preservando sua face, e também para garantir a confiabilidade da afirmação asseverada; em termos linguísticos, elas mostram adaptações (BYBEE, 2010) que a língua sofre em função das necessidades comunicativas do Falante. Do ponto de vista do ensino de gramática – especificamente da sintaxe – acredita-se que o foco na funcionalidade destas orações pode tornar a prática em sala de aula mais rica e eficiente / In this work, we propose a description of complement constructions concerning a functional-cognitive approach. This research was motivated by problems related to grammar teaching, which is tightly associated to language structure and formal description. A corpus with narrative texts (novels, short stories and newspaper news) and argumentation texts (opinion articles, popular science texts and academic papers) was composed for the study of complement constructions. Among the subordinate constructions found in the corpus, the most frequent were the ones in which the predicator of the main clause was an elocution verb, a mental verb and the expression “be + adjective”, therefore, the clauses in the position of direct object and subject. According to Functional Discourse Grammar assumptions (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008) and the cognitive theory of Conceptual Integration (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002), we observed some subjective aspects encoded by these syntactic constructions, motivated by Speaker‟s communicative intentions and by the way he/she conceptualizes the world around him. In pragmatic terms, the complement clauses we studied correspond to Speaker‟s strategies to demonstrate his commitment degree with what he‟s saying, protecting his/her face, and also assuring the information‟s reliability; in linguistic terms, they show the language suffers some adaptations (BYBEE, 2010) to serve Speaker‟s communicative needs. Concerning grammar teaching – especially syntax teaching – we believe that the focus in the functionality of these constructions can make its teaching richer and more efficient

They can be found in all aspects of life. In the area of politics, Lakoff (1995; 2002; 2008a), Lakoff and Wehling (2012) and Kovecses (2000) show that our first encounter with the concept of government happens in the family environment. The primary INSTITUTION AS FAMILY metaphor comes from this experience, and promotes the insurgency of the sub-metaphors THE NATION IS A FAMILY, THE PRESIDENT/ GOVERNMENT IS A PARENT, THE CITIZENS/ OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNEMENT ARE CHILDREN. The NATION AS FAMILY metaphor is associated with the idea of morality. The idea of morality results in different views of Family, and as a result, what the Nation/ government is. This research‘s goal is to analyze if the PRESIDENT AS PARENT metaphor applies in the Brazilian context regarding the president Dilma. We began with the hypotheses that Dilma is seen as a mother figure, therefore, we tried to identify, based on the models proposed by the previously mentioned authors, how the presidente-mom is categorized. The theoretical foundation for this research is the theory of Idealized Cognitive Models (Lakoff, 1987), the Conceptual Metaphor Theory developed by Lakoff (1993; 2008); Reddy (1993), Lakoff and Johnson (1999; 2002 [1980]; 2003), Ortony (1993), Cameron (2003), Sardinha (2007), among other researchers; Kovecses (2000; 2005) and Yu (2008) studies on metaphor and culture and the relation between metaphor and politics, and metaphor and ideology, according to Goatly (2007) and Charteris-Black (2005). The Corpus is made up of political cartoons published from 2010 to 2014. As a result of this regard, the hypotheses that Dilma is seen as a mother figure has been confirmed. We observed in the corpus that she is categorized either as a nurturant mother, the father´s wife, and mainly as the evil stepmother. We also observed that a patriarchalist, sexist and convervatist political-ideological point of view is prevalent in the cartoons. / La métaphore est présente dans notre quotidien et nous la retrouvons dans toutes les sphères de la vie humaine. Dans le champs politique, Lakoff (1995; 2002; 2008a), Lakoff et Wehling (2012) et Kovecses (2000) montrent que nos premières expériences sur l‘idée de gouvernement se produisent au sein de la famille. De ces expériences découle la métaphore primaire INSTITUTION EST FAMILLE qui autorise l‘apparition des sous-métaphores NATION EST FAMILLE, PRÉSIDENT EST PÈRE/MÈRE et CITOYENS/D‘AUTRES MEMBRES DU GOUVERNEMENT SONT ENFANTS/MEMBRES DE LA FAMILLE. La métaphore NATION EST FAMILLE est liée à la conception que nous avons de moralité. Cette conception conduit au surgissement de différentes visions de ce que veut dire famille et, par conséquent, de ce que veut dire Nation/gouvernement. Ce travail a le but d‘analyser si la métaphore PRESIDENT EST PERE/MERE est actualisée dans le contexte brésilien dans les textes se référant à la Présidente Dilma Rousseff. Nous partons de l‘hypothèse que Dilma Rousseff est conceptualisée comme mère et, ainsi, nous cherchons à identifier selon les modèles de famille proposés par les auteurs cités ci-dessus comment la présidente-mère est catégorisée. La base théorique de notre recherche est la Théorie des Modèles Cognitifs Idéalisés(LAKOFF, 1987), la Théorie de la Métaphore Conceptuelle, développée par Lakoff (1993; 2008), Reddy (1993), Lakoff et Johnson, (1999; 2002 [1980]; 2003), Ortony (1993), Cameron (2003), Sardinha (2007), parmi d‘autres; les études sur la métaphore et la culture de Kovecses (2000, 2005) et Yu (2008) et le rapport existant entre métaphore et idéologie, selon Goatly (2007) e Charteris-Black (2005). Notre corpus est composé de dessins de presse publiés entre 2010 et 2014. Dans nos résultats, l‘hypothèse que Dilma est conceptualisée comme mère a été confirmée. Nous proposons que dans le corpus de notre travail la présidente-mère est catégorisée soit comme mère soignante, soit comme la femme du père et surtout, comme belle-mère méchante. Pour conclure, nous constatons que dans les dessins de presse prédomine une vision politico-idéologique à caractère patriarcal, sexiste et conservateur. Dessas experiências, decorre a metáfora primária INSTITUIÇÃO É FAMÍLIA, que autoriza o aparecimento das submetáforas NAÇÃO É FAMÍLIA, PRESIDENTE É PAI/MÃE e CIDADÃOS/OUTROS MEMBROS DO GOVERNO SÃO FILHOS/MEMBROS DA FAMÍLIA. A metáfora NAÇÃO É FAMÍLIA está ligada à concepção que temos de moralidade. Essa concepção leva ao surgimento de diferentes visões do que é família e, consequentemente, do que é Nação/governo. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar se a metáfora PRESIDENTE É PAI/MÃE é atualizada no contexto brasileiro em textos que se referem à presidente Dilma Rousseff. Partimos da hipótese de que Dilma Rousseff é conceptualizada como mãe e, desse modo, buscamos identificar, de acordo com os modelos de família propostos pelos autores mencionados acima, como a presidente-mãe é categorizada. Tomamos como base teórica para nossa pesquisa a Teoria dos Modelos Cognitivos Idealizados (LAKOFF, 1987), a Teoria da metáfora Conceptual, desenvolvida por Lakoff (1993; 2008), Reddy (1993), Lakoff e Johnson, (1999; 2002 [1980]; 2003), Ortony (1993), Cameron (2003), Sardinha (2007), dentre outros autores; os estudos sobre metáfora e cultura de Kovecses (2000, 2005) e Yu (2008) e a relação existente entre metáfora e política e metáfora e ideologia, conforme Goatly (2007) e Charteris-Black (2005).
