ToGo Cabs: an Android phone cab reservation application

In such a scenario, mobile application development is one of most sought after platforms. Android is one of the largest platforms that run in most smart phones from manufacturers like Samsung, HTC etc. ToGo Cabs is an Android phone cab reservation application which targets the residents of the state of Kansas. While some cab services boast about their cab being just a call away, some other taxi services boast about the punctuality of their service. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, the passengers are just tired of waiting at different locations for the cab that they have just reserved to pick them up and take them home. What we need is a reliable mobile application which reserves a cab for us from a specific place at a certain time and which tells its users the status of the cab in order to keep them from waiting for long hours. ToGo Cabs serves just that purpose. ToGo Cabs allows the users to get a cab from any location in the state of Kansas, even if they seem to be lost. One does not have to spend hours on phone with the cab services to tell them where exactly you are located currently. The Global Positioning System takes care of the current location for the users. This application shows the route to the user, which the cab would take to reach to the destination. Once a user reserves a cab, he is acknowledged with a confirmation number which he can further use to check the cab status. The application provides the user the facility to e-mail or text his confirmation number. The application can also set a reminder notification just 15 minutes before the cab pick-up. The user can also check all the trips that he has made so far, from the application.

Orientador: Bárbara Stolte Bezerra / Banca: Archimedes Azevedo Raia Junior / Banca: Gustavo Garcia Manzato / Resumo: O trabalho analisa uma proposta de reestruturação do Sistema de Transporte Coletivo por ônibus do Município de Bauru, baseada em pesquisas operacionais e de imagem do serviço, realizadas em 2013. De posse destas pesquisas, o Poder Público planejou a médio e longo prazo as ações de reestruturação tanto operacionais quanto estratégicas, tratando de diversos fatores inerentes à qualidade do serviço prestado. Desta forma, o trabalho propõe uma metodologia de acompanhamento da qualidade do serviço no decorrer destas mudanças no Sistema de Transporte Coletivo, buscando indicadores operacionais e de imagem, considerando os diversos agentes envolvidos. Pela análise dos dados foram elencados quatro problemas principais, a saber: Lotação, Tempo de Espera, Qualidade dos Pontos de Parada, e tarifa. Para os três primeiros problemas foram elaborados objetivos, metas e indicadores através da análise da literatura estudada. O problema Tarifa foi analisado em relação ao impacto das ações de reestruturação no valor da tarifa, ou seja, para cada ação implementada é analisada a tendência para de aumento, redução ou manutenção do valor da tarifa. De posse dos indicadores e suas métricas de avaliação, foi realizado um estudo de caso em três linhas do sistema que passaram por modificações após a reestruturação. This thesis is focused on different government approaches to taxi market. It discusses necessity of regulations in this branch. The core part of this thesis is empirical analysis of taxi markets in London, Dublin, Paris, Stockholm, New York and Prague. To study the subject more complex I also examined PHV (private hire vehicle) market which provides almost the same kind of services but it is not regulated. These markets are compared in term of supply -- number of cars per capita and price, and also in term of demand -- utilization of cars and customers content. According to this comparison I tried to find out if any of these approches can be considered as optimal, and wheather if regulated or deregulated markets bring better results. This thesis also discusses the best way how to deregulate entry into the taxi market. This will be illustrated by case study of entry deregulation in Dublin. I also provide some recommendation for taxi market in Prague.

För att uppnå detta beskriver vi först hur olika faktorer påverkar Nordic Cab AB:s prissättning. Dessa faktorer är företagets mål, kostnader, efterfrågan och konkurrenter. Utifrån dessa faktorer och intervjuer med återförsäljare av multifunktionella barnvagnar och VD:n för Nordic Cab AB kommer vi fram till att Nordic Cab AB borde använda sig av en prissättningsmetod som baseras på upplevt kundvärde.</p><p>Genom att låta återförsäljare av multifunktionella barnvagnar betygsätta hur viktiga olika egenskaper hos dessa är för kunden och hur bra de olika företagen på marknaden är på att tillgodose dessa egenskaper kan vi presentera ett kundvärde för Nordic Cab AB och två av deras konkurrenter. From these factors and interviews with retailers of multifunctional strollers and the CEO of Nordic Cab AB we reach the conclusion that Nordic Cab AB should use a pricing method which is based on perceived customer value.</p><p>By letting retailers of multifunctional strollers grade how important different abilities of these are to the customer and how good the different companies on the market are at supplying these abilities, we can present a figure of customer value for Nordic Cab AB and two of their competitors. We compare these and reach the conclusion that the difference in customer value offered between Nordic Cab AB and Company A (which charges a higher price) does not reflect the difference in price between the two. A Scientometric Study on Buffalo Research in India and Pakistan: A Profile based on CAB Direct Online

Research Article / This paper intends to observe and compare the R&D output on ‘Buffaloes’ by the researchers in India and Pakistan. The chosen study period is 55 years (1955-2009) and CAB Direct Online is the source database for this research. During the period (1955 – 2009) a total of 9,096 and 706 publications were published by the scientists of India and Pakistan respectively on buffalo research and India is the top producing country with 9,096 papers (92.80%) followed by Pakistan with 706 papers (7.20%). The average number of publications published per year by India and Pakistan were 165 and 12 respectively. The spurt in the literature output of India and Pakistan were reported during 2001-2009 and 1991-2000 respectively. The study also reports the most preferred journals and most productive authors in India and Pakistan. This study also provides an inventory and scientometric dimensions of publications on buffalo research by India and Pakistan.

Agricultural Systems in Babati : Zea mays and its alternatives

This paper aims to give an understanding on the aspects that influences the choice of cropsand agricultural methods in Babati, Tanzania. Drought is a reoccurring problem in this part ofTanzania, which affects a majority of the towns’ farmers. This fact is likely to affect thechoice of crop as well as the limitations when it comes to the choices in cultivation. But thechoice itself has implications on its surrounding and can be affected by the surrounding. Tounderstand the circumstances, a wider picture will be depicted and an evaluation of thegeography of Babati and on its climate conditions. The results from this study suggest thatlack of crop rotation pose as a problem that should be studied. Furthermore, green manurefrom legumes and plants like Tithonia could be a less expensive alternative but can stillfunction as an effective fertilizer. Concerning the drought issue the study can not concludethat drought resistant crops would have any big improving effects. Nevertheless there is someevidence advocating that it could be apart of the solution in terms of avoiding some of thenegative effects brought on by drought.

Semiactive Cab Suspension Control for Semitruck Applications

Truck drivers are exposed to vibrations all day as a part of their work. In addition to repetitive motion injuries the constant vibrations add to the fatigue of the driver which in turn can have safety implications. The goal of this research is to lower the vibrations an occupant of a class 8 semitruck cab sleeper is exposed to by improving the ride quality. Unlike prior research in the area of ride comfort that target the chassis or seat suspension, this work focuses on the cab suspension. The current standard in cab suspensions is comprised of some type of spring and passive damper mechanism. Ride improvements can most easily be accomplished by replacing the stock passive dampers with some type of controllable damper; in this case Magneto-Rheological (MR) dampers. MR dampers can change damping characteristics in real time, while behaving like a passive damper in their OFF state. This means that in case of a failure to the power supply, the dampers still retain their functionality and can provide some level of damping. Additionally, MR dampers can be packaged such that they do not require any redesign of mounting bracketry on the cab or the frame, their use as a retrofitable device. The damper controller is based on the skyhook control policy pioneered by Karnopp et al. in the 1970s. A variation on skyhook control is chosen called no-jerk skyhook control. A controller called Hierarchical SemiActive Control (HSAC) is designed and implemented to allow the no-jerk skyhook controller to adapt to the road conditions. It also incorporates an endstop controller to better handle the limited rattle space of the cab suspension. The development and initial testing of the controller prototype is done in simulation using a model of the cab and its suspension. The model is derived from first principles using bond graph modeling. The controller is implemented in Simulink to ease the transition to hardware testing. The realtime prototype controller is tested on a class 8 semitruck in a lab environment using dSPACE and road input at the rear axles. The laboratory results are veried on the road in a series of road tests on a test truck. The road tests showed a need for HSAC controller. The HSAC is implemented on the test truck in a final prototype system. The test results with this system show signfiicant improvements over the stock passive suspension, especially when dealing with transient excitations. The overall research results presented show that significant ride improvements can be achieved from a semiactive cab suspension. / Ph. D.
