The equations of motion of the cylindrical shell are deduced from their energy functionals and the strain field is based on the nonlinear Donnell shallow shell theory. Finally, the problem is reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by the application of the standard Galerkin method. The modal expansion that describes the transverse displacement of the shell is obtained by applying perturbation techniques, which identifies the importance of each term in the modal expansion by the power of the perturbation parameter. The Karhunen-Loève method is applied in order to verify the importance of each term in the modal expansion, quantifying the contribution of each of these terms in the total energy of the system. The starting solution used in the perturbation procedure contains two modes of vibration with the same natural frequency and their respective companion modes, yielding a modal expansion able to describe the modal interaction between these two modes. Then, the influence of modal interaction on the nonlinear behavior of the cylindrical shell, subjected to both lateral and axial harmonic load is studied. From the analysis of the resonance curves, the parametric instability and escape boundaries, the bifurcation diagrams, the basins of attraction and phase portraits of the cylindrical shell is possible to identify situations in which the consideration of modal interaction is necessary.

Desenvolvimento e aplicação do método dos elementos finitos generalizados em análise tridimensional não-linear de sólidos / Development and employment of generalized finite element method in three-dimensional nonlinear analysis of solids

Ivan Francisco Ruiz Torres 26 September 2003 (has links)
This work presents a contribution to the generalized finite element method (GFEM) employment in three-dimensional nonlinear analysis of solids. The nonlinear numerical analysis conduced with damage and plasticity models is original. GFEM is a nonconventional formulation of finite element method (FEM) which results from the addition to the latter of concepts and techniques of the so called Meshless methods, specially the enrichment of the initial approximations (partition of unity) by customized functions. A brief review of Meshless methods and generalized finite element method bibliography is presented, as well as their main features. Based on GFEM, the formulation of tetrahedral and hexahedral elements is shown. Three material laws are considered aiming nonlinear analysis: plasticity (perfectly plastic or linear isotropic hardening), with von Mises yield criterion; brittle damage on concrete under monotonic increasing loading (Mazars model) and damage coupled with plasticity (Lemaitre model), a suitable model for metals. Details of the computational code, based on GFEM and material laws mentioned above, are presented, as well as results of numerical analysis. These results emphasize some of the advantages of GFEM applied to nonlinear analysis, such as: enrichment of the basic approximations limited to some regions of interest in the domain, for instance, those exhibiting high strain and stress gradients; an accurated definition of the distributions of quantities like damage variable and von Mises equivalent stress, avoiding remeshing; and overcoming of volumetric locking associated to plasticity models

[en] STUDY OF SPATIAL STEEL AND COMPOSITE TRUSSES FOR GIRDERS OF LARGE SINGLE-STOREY BUILDING / [pt] ESTUDO DE TRELIÇAS ESPACIAIS DE AÇO OU MISTAS PARA VIGAMENTOS PRINCIPAIS DE GALPÕES DE GRANDES DIMENSÕES

BRUNO RODRIGUES AMORIM 15 February 2019 (has links)
[en] Roofing systems constitute a considerable part of the final costs of large single-storey buildings. The loads of this system are transferred to the columns from the girders. During the design process may be raised the question of what may be the best solutions for the roof supporting girders, mainly due to the large spans required. This dissertation presents a study of the structural configurations and the use of different materials for the design, manufacture and assembly of roofs of large single-storey buildings. Several designs of a model structure were developed where the type of profile of the main chords, the length of the spans, the geometry of the cross-section of the truss and the angulation of diagonals were varied. Based on the obtained results, a parametric analysis was performed focused on solutions presenting the lower structural weight of the girders. The great advantage of using multiplanar trusses is the good behavior out of plane that this type of structure offers, which can reduce costs with bracing and secondary elements. A deterministic study was also carried out in order to support decisions in choosing the best solution for the various types of large single-storey buildings studied. The preliminary results obtained indicate that the solution of concrete filled steel tubular chords in selected parts of the structure represents one of the most competitive solutions for this type of construction.

ABSTRACT 3-D SOIL STRUCTURE INTERACTION ANALYSES OF THREE IDENTICAL BUILDINGS IN SAKARYA CITY AFTER 17 AUGUST 1999 KOCAELI EARTHQUAKE &Uuml / nal,Orhan M.S., Department of Civil Engineering, Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr Kemal &Ouml / nder &Ccedil / etin October 2003, 116 Pages The aim of this study is to analyze the soil structure interaction of three identical buildings on &ordf / ahinler Street of Sakarya city which had no damage to heavy damage after the Kocaeli (1999) earthquake. For the purpose of 3-D dynamic nonlinear analysis of the soil site and the overlying structures, Flac3D software was chosen as the numerical modeling framework. Soil properties were determined by using the results of available site investigation studies. A three dimensional mesh was created to represent the topographic and geometric constraints of the problem. Linearly elastic perfectly plastic constitutive model was implemented to model the soil behavior. The results of 3-D dynamic numerical analyses in the forms of acceleration, displacement, strain, stress and pore pressure were presented. The higher acceleration, strain and stress levels calculated under the collapsed building can be attributed as the major cause of poor performance of the structure.

Detailed Evaluation Of An Existing Reinforced Concrete Building Damaged Under Its Own Weight

Bayraktar, Atilla 01 May 2011 (has links) (PDF)
DETAILED EVALUATION OF AN EXISTING REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDING DAMAGED UNDER ITS OWN WEIGHT Bayraktar, Atilla M.Sc., Department of Civil Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yakut May 2011, 130 pages A significant part of the Turkey&rsquo / s building inventory consists of reinforced concrete frame structures. In addition to that a big part of the existing building inventory in Turkey shows insufficiency in seismic performance damage or failure of structures under their own loads has also been observed. The failure of Z&uuml / mr&uuml / t Apartment building that occurred in 2004 in Konya and resulted in the death of 92 people brings the necessity of researches on robustness and reserve capacities of the buildings under gravity loading to front. In the context of this thesis, the event in Konya that has resulted in the crushing of four columns in Dostlar Building Complex is studied. After the occurrence of the event, the building was visited, plans of existing condition were prepared and pre-assessment was performed. Original plans of the building, strength test results of the concrete samples and reinforcement detection results were obtained. The reasons behind the crushing of the columns have been investigated through a series of analyses based on a number of possible hypotheses. After modeling the building in SAP2000 program, demand-capacity ratios are calculated. Nonlinear behavior of the structure is determined by incremental static pushover analysis and the seismic performance of the building is evaluated by nonlinear procedure described in 2007 Turkish Earthquake Code. To determine the nonlinear behavior under gravity loading and collapse mechanism, incremental vertical pushover analysis is performed.

Modeling the post shear failure behavior of reinforced concrete columns

LeBorgne, Matthew Ronald 03 July 2012 (has links)
Numerous reinforced concrete buildings vulnerable to earthquake induced collapse have been constructed in seismic zones prior to the 1970s. A major contributor to building collapse is the loss of axial load carrying capacity in non-seismically detailed columns. Experimental investigations have shown that non-seismically detailed columns will only experience axial failure after shear failure and subsequent lateral shear strength degradation have occurred. Therefore, column shear failure and degrading behavior must be modeled accurately before axial collapse algorithms can be properly implemented. Furthermore, accurate modeling of the degrading lateral-load behavior of columns is needed if lateral load sharing between structural elements is to be assessed with reasonable accuracy during seismic analyses. A calibrated analytical model was developed that is capable of estimating the lateral strength degrading behavior of RC columns prone to shear failure. Existing analytical models poorly approximate nonlinear column behavior and require several nonphysical damage parameters to be defined. In contrast, the proposed calibrated model provides the engineering community with a valuable tool that only requires the input of column material and geometric properties to simulate column behavior up to loss of lateral strength. In developing the model, a database of RC columns was compiled. Parameters extracted from database column-tests were scrutinized for trends and regression models relating damage parameters to column physical properties and boundary conditions were produced. The regression models were implemented in the degrading analytical framework that was developed in this project. Two reinforced concrete columns exhibiting significant inelastic deformations prior to failing in shear were tested in support of the analytical work. A newly developed Vision System was used to track a grid of targets on the column face with a resolution of three-thousands of an inch. Surface column deformations were measured to further the understanding of the fundamental changes in column behavior that accompany shear and axial failure and validate the proposed analytical model. This research provides the engineering community with an analytical tool that can be used to perform nonlinear dynamic analysis of buildings that are at risk of collapse and help engineers improve retrofit techniques. Further insight into shear behavior attained through this project is an important step toward the development of better shear and axial degradation models for reinforced concrete columns. / text

Boulanger, Laurence 12 1900 (has links)
A new notion of linking for pairs of sets $A\subset B$, $P\subset Q$ in a Hilbert space of the form $X=Y\oplus Y^{\perp}$ with $Y$ separable, called $\tau$-linking, is defined. Intelligent Methods For Dynamic Analysis And Navigation Of Autonomous Land Vehicles

Kaygisiz, Huseyin Burak 01 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Autonomous land vehicles (ALVs) have received considerable attention after their introduction into military and commercial applications. ALVs still stand as a challenging research topic. One of the main problems arising in ALV operations is the navigation accuracy while the other is the dynamic effects of road irregularities which may prevent the vehicle and its cargo to function properly. In this thesis, we propose intelligent solutions to these two basic problems of ALV. First, an intelligent method is proposed to enhance the performance of a coupled global positioning/inertial navigation system (GPS/INS) for land navigation applications during the GPS signal loss. Our method is based on using an artificial neural network (ANN) to intelligently aid the GPS/INS coupled navigation system in the absence of GPS signals. The proposed enhanced GPS/INS is used in the dynamic environment of a tour of an autonomous van and we provide the results here. GPS/INS+ANN system performance is thus demonstrated with the land trials. Secondly, our work focuses on the identification and enlargement of the stability region of the ALV. In this thesis, the domain of attraction of the ALV is found to be patched by chaotic and regular regions with chaotic boundaries which are extracted using novel technique of cell mapping equipped with measures of fractal dimension and rough sets. All image cells in the cellular state space, with their individual fractal dimension are classified as being members of lower approximation (surely stable), upper approximation (possibly stable) or boundary region using rough set theory. The obtained rough set with fractal dimension as its attribute is used to model the uncertainty of the regular regions. This uncertainty is then smoothed by a reinforcement learning algorithm in order to enlarge regular regions that are used for chassis control, critical in ALV in preventing vibration damages that can harm the payload. Hence, we will make ALV work in the largest safe area in dynamical sense and prevent the vehicle and its cargo.

Advanced Analysis of Steel Frame Structures Subjected to Lateral Torsional Buckling Effects

Yuan, Zeng January 2004 (has links)
The current design procedure for steel frame structures is a two-step process including an elastic analysis to determine design actions and a separate member capacity check. This design procedure is unable to trace the full range of load-deflection response and hence the failure modes of the frame structures can not be accurately predicted. In recent years, the development of advanced analysis methods has aimed at solving this problem by combining the analysis and design tasks into one step. Application of the new advanced analysis methods permits a comprehensive assessment of the actual failure modes and ultimate strengths of structural steel systems in practical design situations. One of the advanced analysis methods, the refined plastic hinge method, has shown great potential to become a practical design tool. However, at present, it is only suitable for a special class of steel frame structures that is not subject to lateral torsional buckling effects. The refined plastic hinge analysis can directly account for three types of frame failures, gradual formation of plastic hinges, column buckling and local buckling. However, this precludes most of the steel frame structures whose behaviour is governed by lateral torsional buckling. Therefore, the aim of this research is to develop a practical advanced analysis method suitable for general steel frame structures including the effects of lateral-torsional buckling. Lateral torsional buckling is a complex three dimensional instability phenomenon. Unlike the in-plane buckling of beam-columns, a closed form analytical solution is not available for lateral torsional buckling. The member capacity equations used in design specifications are derived mainly from testing of simply supported beams. Further, there has been very limited research into the behaviour and design of steel frame structures subject to lateral torsional buckling failures. Therefore in order to incorporate lateral torsional buckling effects into an advanced analysis method, a detailed study must be carried out including inelastic beam buckling failures. This thesis contains a detailed description of research on extending the scope of advanced analysis by developing methods that include the effects of lateral torsional buckling in a nonlinear analysis formulation. It has two components. Firstly, distributed plasticity models were developed using the state-of-the-art finite element analysis programs for a range of simply supported beams and rigid frame structures to investigate and fully understand their lateral torsional buckling behavioural characteristics. Nonlinear analyses were conducted to study the load-deflection response of these structures under lateral torsional buckling influences. It was found that the behaviour of simply supported beams and members in rigid frame structures is significantly different. In real frame structures, the connection details are a decisive factor in terms of ultimate frame capacities. Accounting for the connection rigidities in a simplified advanced analysis method is very difficult, but is most critical. Generally, the finite element analysis results of simply supported beams agree very well with the predictions of the current Australian steel structures design code AS4100, but the capacities of rigid frame structures can be significantly higher compared with Australian code predictions. The second part of the thesis concerns the development of a two dimensional refined plastic hinge analysis which is capable of considering lateral torsional buckling effects. The formulation of the new method is based on the observations from the distributed plasticity analyses of both simply supported beams and rigid frame structures. The lateral torsional buckling effects are taken into account implicitly using a flexural stiffness reduction factor in the stiffness matrix formulation based on the member capacities specified by AS4100. Due to the lack of suitable alternatives, concepts of moment modification and effective length factors are still used for determining the member capacities. The effects of connection rigidities and restraints from adjacent members are handled by using appropriate effective length factors in the analysis. Compared with the benchmark solutions for simply supported beams, the new refined plastic hinge analysis is very accurate. For rigid frame structures, the new method is generally more conservative than the finite element models. The accuracy of the new method relies on the user's judgement of beam segment restraints. Overall, the design capacities in the new method are superior to those in the current design procedure, especially for frame structures with less slender members. The new refined plastic hinge analysis is now able to capture four types of failure modes, plastic hinge formation, column buckling, local buckling and lateral torsional buckling. With the inclusion of lateral torsional buckling mode as proposed in this thesis, advanced analysis is one step closer to being used for general design practice.

Evaluation of KK joints between steel tubular profiles.

David Silva Nobre 26 February 2014 (has links)
Due to the high degree of development of the technology in its production, the use of tubular profiles is greatly widespread in countries such as Canada, England, Germany and Holland. The use of such profiles in Brazil was very restricted, being limited to spatial roofs. Currently, the situation in the Brazilian market begins to change as a result of the significant valeability increase of structural hollow sections. This work presents an analysis of KK connections with circular hollow sections. A comparison between the analytical design formulations proposed by Eurocode 3 Part 1.8, 2nd edition of the design guide of tubular joints of the CIDECT, Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 16239:2013, Paul and Kurobane equations and limit deformation criteria was performed. For each of the joints types analyzed, a finite element model was developed in ANSYS program. The developed model was calibrated against numerical and experimental results. The physical and geometrical non-linearities have been incorporated in the model to mobilize the joint full load capacity. The material nonlinearity was considered by Von Mises criteria through stress versus strain bilinear constitutive law. The geometric non-linearity was introduced in the model by the use of Lagrange Updated Formulation in order to consider the expected large deformation and to allow redistribution of load in the joint after the initial yielding. This work also proposes the modeling of a planar truss made of circular hollow section structures to establish a comparison between a single joint and the response of joint as a part of a full scale truss structure. The modeling of a spatial truss made of circular hollow section structures to establish a comparison between a single joint and the response of joint as a part of a full scale truss structure was proposed.
