Disgnóstico ambiental do setor noroeste do sítio urbano de Piracicaba (SP) : uma abordagem geográfica /

Silveira, Alan. January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: This research aims to supply a detailed environmental diagnosis, considering an integrated geographical approach, which subsidizes territorial planning actions in the northwest urban expansion axis of Piracicaba (SP) urbane siege. It was based on the General System Theory and, for the studied area, it was applied a Ross' methodological proposition (1990, 1994 e 2001), concerning the empirical analysis of natural and anthropized environmental fragility, as well as the Moroz, Canil and Ross‟ methodological proposal (1994) for the analysis of the conditions of environmental impacts derived from the anthropical use and occupation and the transgressions to the environmental legislation. These methodological propositions furthered the elaboration of synthesis cartographic products for the geographical information integrated analysis by the previous elaboration of intermediate cartographic documents. We intended to point, from the formulated cartographic documents, the impressive conditions imposed to the relief, its susceptibilities to the morphodynamic processes, the transgressions related to the environmental legislation, as well as the areas with restrictions to expansion of the Piracicaba (SP) northwestern sector urbane siege, as the potential fragility point of view, as the legal one. We could verify that the actions promoted by the anthropical system are modifying the matter and energy flows of the geomorphological system and that the main interference forms are associated to sugar cane monoculture and the no-planning urban expansion. / Mestre

A Proletarian Prometheus: Socialism, Ethnicity, and Revolution at the Lakehead, 1900-1935

Beaulieu, Michel S. 06 March 2009 (has links)
“The Proletarian Prometheus: Socialism, Ethnicity, and Revolution at the Lakehead, 1900-1935” is an analysis of the various socialist organizations operating at the Canadian Lakehead (comprised of the twin cities of Port Arthur and Fort William, Ontario, now the present-day City of Thunder Bay, and their vicinity) during the first 35 years of the twentieth century. It contends that the circumstances and actions of Lakehead labour, especially those related to ideology, ethnicity, and personality, worked simultaneously to empower and to fetter workers in their struggles against the shackles of capitalism. The twentieth-century Lakehead never lacked for a population of enthusiastic, energetic and talented left-wingers. Yet, throughout this period the movement never truly solidified and took hold. Socialist organizations, organizers and organs came and went, leaving behind them an enduring legacy, yet paradoxically the sum of their efforts was cumulatively less than the immense sacrifices and energies they had poured into them. Between 1900 and 1935, the region's working-class politics was shaped by the interaction of ideas drawn from the much larger North Atlantic socialist world with the particularities of Lakehead society and culture. International frameworks of analysis and activism were of necessity reshaped and revised in a local context in which ethnic divisions complicated and even undermined the class identities upon which so many radical dreams and ambitions rested. / Thesis (Ph.D, History) -- Queen's University, 2007-12-14 20:26:40.652

Disruption in place attachment: Insights of young Aboriginal adults on the social and cultural impacts of industrial development in northern Alberta

Spyce, Tera 11 1900 (has links)
People living in the north have been and will continue to be affected by increasing exploration and exploitation of the region's natural resources. To understand the human impacts a qualitative approach and sense of place, place attachment, and disruption in place theories were used to analyze the experiences of young Aboriginal adults in a Dene Tha' community in northwestern Alberta. The major finding of this study was that the young people developed deep attachments to their place; however, environmental, social, and cultural changes have altered life here and as a consequence many of the young people no longer want to remain living in their community. The results suggest that the Dene Tha' are being gradually displaced and their homeland is becoming increasingly unable to sustain them or their culture. The findings also indicate that gradual environmental deterioration can lead to profound social and cultural changes that should be considered before land use decisions are made. / Rural Sociology

Physical forcing of zooplankton in the upper oligotrophic ocean off Bermuda (northwestern Atlantic) and New Caledonia (southwestern Pacific) from acoustics and net measurements

Smati, Hossem Edine 18 November 2015 (has links)
Physical forcing drives the space and time discontinuity (patchiness) of plankton in the ocean. The thesis was focused on the role of these forcing on the zooplankton, studied using both acoustic and traditional methods with net sampling. The study was based on two examples. The first one concerns the northwestern Sargasso Sea where high resolution time-series data on 0-200m macrozooplankton abundance and distribution off Bermuda was estimated from volume backscattering strength (Sv) measured with a 153-Khz ADCP. Three types of eddies were identified: a productive cyclonic eddy, the periphery of a mode water eddy, and the periphery of an anticyclonic eddy. Sv values increased during passage of theses eddies, with a more pronounced increase associated with the edge of the cyclonic and the anticyclonic eddies, suggesting a significant biological response to localized upwelling in the high velocity boundary of these eddies. In the second example, spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton off New Caledonia was studied during two multidisciplinary cruises in 2011. Zooplankton variability was assessed using net sampling together with acoustic measurements (shipborne ADCP, scientific echosounder and TAPS). Higher amplitudes of diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton were associated with higher abundance of large zooplankton and cold waters to the south of the study area, while lower DVM amplitudes in the north were associated with warmer waters and higher abundance of small organisms. These acoustic measurements clearly evidenced the role of physical forcing, particularly mesoscale features, in shaping zooplankton space and time distribution.

Glockenbecherzeitliche Gräber in Nordwestsachsen: Vom Becher(-n) zur Tasse

Conrad, Matthias 29 May 2019 (has links)
This article presents the Bell Beaker graves found in Northwest Saxony after 1989. Because some of the burials contained none or only culturally non-specific grave goods, the overall analysis focused on the cultural classification of the graves. Investigation of the internal and external grave context allowed to classify the majority as graves of the Bell Beaker Culture and subsequently to interpret the features related to the graves. Furthermore the relationship between the Bell Beaker and Únetice Culture is discussed and special regional aspects of Bell Beaker burial customs are described in detail.
