Teaching and learning with technology as enabler: a case study on flexible learning for postgraduate nurses

Honey, Michelle Lorraine Lewis January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore the practice of flexible learning for postgraduate nurses. Flexible learning is a contemporary approach to learning that utilises the benefits of technology. Flexible learning can be understood as a continuum, from fully on-line or web-based courses, to those that are on-campus and supported by technology. Internationally, the rise of flexible learning has been influenced by increased demand for higher education and competition among providers within the context of reduced education funding. The study population, New Zealand postgraduate nurses are accessing higher education in increasing numbers to advance their practice and to position themselves for new roles and opportunities. These are often experienced nurses yet inexperienced in higher university education, who combine study, work and other commitments. The study employed a qualitative case study design because it enabled multiple perspectives to be gained. Data included documentation, participant observation, survey, students’ assessed work and interviews with key stakeholders: student, teacher and the organisation. Data collection and analysis occurred simultaneously as an iterative process. Thematic analysis was conducted on reviewed documentation, participant observation and interviews. The survey was analysed using descriptive statistical analysis techniques. Finally, a rubric was constructed as a matrix for analysing assessed work. The study identifies the elements that contribute to flexible learning and the interconnectedness between the elements within the dynamic context of a university to illustrate that effective flexible learning can be provided by using a student centred approach to ensure the learning needs of postgraduate nurses are met. Flexible learning was found to improve access, choice, and provide an emphasis on the student as central to learning. In response to these findings the weighting of recommendations are toward the organisation as it is at this level where greater change can be made to improve support for flexible learning provision.

Thus, the Higher Education Institutes (HEI) and teachers are invited to face new challenges and reflect on their practices, using pedagogical approaches and innovative methodologies to meet the requirements of a globalized society. This study has as an objective to analyze the perspective of teachers in what concern the pedagogical approaches used in nursing education and to identify pedagogical approaches utilized by teachers in nursing education. This is a field research of exploratory kind, descriptive, of quantitative approach. The search was conducted at the Department of Nursing of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte UFRN, based in the city of Natal. The population consisted of forty-six teachers. From this population was selected a sample of twenty teachers. Data collection occurred from August to September 2011, through the utilization of the technique of interview and questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed in two moments. In the first moment, was carried out the quantitative analysis that refers to the obtained data through the interview technique, methodological procedures were submitted to the content analysis proposed by Bardin. On the second moment, concerning the quantitative analysis of the questionnaires applied to the teachers and of the identification data, which were digitized and transferred to a spreadsheet electronic of Microsoft Excel XP, tabulated and organized into tables, containing their relative and absolute frequencies. It is worth mentioning that were respected the aspects of the CNS Resolution 196/96. With regard to the characteristics of research participants, 20% were male; with a degree of titration of 55% doctorates; regarding time of service there was a greater representation from 15 to 45 years, with 45%. The results showed that 90% of teachers who participated in the research have an appropriate understanding of non-critical pedagogical approaches, only 10% had an inadequate understanding. However, 70% of teachers, despite having an adequate understanding, reported difficulties when attempting to implement these pedagogies. Most teachers, with representability of 80% consider the non-critical pedagogies relevant in nursing education, as well as critical pedagogies, being represented by 95% of teachers. It was concluded that both critical and non-critical pedagogies are in teachers practice of undergraduate nursing education. It feels like a moment of transition, since the presence of new ways of teaching as a part of this educational context, with educational models that give value to scientific, ethical and personal aspects in the educational process. The research contains limitations, however highlights the contribution of new possibilities for action, reflection on the context of performance, maximizing the pedagogical skills necessary to conduct teaching process, in line with the new educational paradigm of higher education / No mundo hodierno s?o not?rias as mudan?as nos aspectos social, ?tico, econ?mico e pol?tico na sociedade, as quais atingem de modo incisivo, o ensino superior, exigindo uma s?rie de modifica??es e uma nova vis?o na forma??o de enfermeiros, a fim de atender as demandas do Sistema ?nico de Sa?de.

Nascimento, Luzia Kelly Alves da Silva 13 December 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T14:46:56Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 LuziaKASN_DISSERT.pdf: 2970962 bytes, checksum: ad974f20091c6e7dff72014269aba531 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-13 / The nursing process (NP) it s the systematized way of offering humanized care with the objective of reaching the expected results. The concern of the health and education institutions of elaborating implementation strategies of it is growing. The objective of this research was to know the vision of the senior students of the nursing graduation courses from Natal/RN, about the teaching of the NP. It s about a descriptive and exploratory study of the qualitative and quantitative type, done in five teaching institutions of the undergraduate nursing course of the municipality of Natal- RN in 2011. The research was composed by 48 students of the last 2 years of the nursing course. The gathering of the data was done through an online survey with open and closed questions via SurveyMonkey. For the quantitative data it was used the descriptive statistics from Microsoft Office Excel and for the qualitative data the Content Analysis of Bardin. The results pointed a predominance of female students (81,25%) with an age between 21- 39 years old (75,00%) and in the last year of the course (62,50%). As the opinion of the students about the NP two categories emerged: 1) Nursing Process as grounded method in scientific knowledge and established in two stages; 2) Nursing Assistance Quality, with two subcategories: Nursing Process as Nursing Practice and Nursing Process as instrument of improvement of the aid quality and promotion of well-being. In relation to the tuition of the NP the students (45,83%) said that the knowledge on the subject of the instructor was good; 81,25% reported that the professors use a traditional teaching methodology with the problem solving components and 45,83% answered that is addressed in specific disciplines in an isolated way starting from the professional line. The phase of NP that the nursing students have more difficulties of learning and implementing, being mentioned 22 times (29,70%). In relation to the student s difficulties, in the fields of supervised internships, in applying the NP it was stated for 83,50% that the barriers were related to the non implementation of the practice, overwork and the lack of trust of the nurse in the NP. The teaching-care strategies described as the internship fields were: the training of nurses to be able to contribute with the University in the implementation of the service and teaching; and the need of the universities to focus, continuously throughout the course, the NP with the involvement and incentive of the instructors in this process. These results show that the NP for the nursing students is a work methodology of the profession that needs to be implemented effectively in the practical reality for its teaching to turn effective and for the future professionals to be able to bring real contributions in the achievement of systematized actions trying to improve the assistance quality and the nursing actions. It is expected that this study could help bringing some strategies to facilitate the merging between theory and practice in teaching the NP and stimulate a discussion about the topic at the Nursing Schools where the research was held together with the coordinators, instructors and students / O processo de enfermagem (PE) ? o meio sistematizado de oferecer cuidados humanizados com o objetivo de atingir os resultados esperados.

Silva, Fábio de Sousa e January 2016 (has links)
Over time, the curriculum standardizations of the professional training of nursing professionals are going through significant changes. In 2001, the Brazilian Ministry of Education approved new National Curriculum Guidelines (NCG) for health courses, emphasizing the adequacy of the professional training to the needs of SUS. The traineeship is shown as a pedagogical strategy that needs to go beyond the teacher-student relationship. This study aims to comparatively analyze the curriculum traineeships from the perception of students of the nursing course in two colleges – one public and one private – in the countryside of Pernambuco in the light of national curriculum guidelines. This is a qualitative study, of exploratory, analytical and comparative type, characterized as a case study of the curriculum traineeship experienced by undergraduate students in the last period of the nursing course in two universities in the countryside of Pernambuco: one public and one private. The results indicate divergence only with respect to the preceptorship of primary care services, since there is a failure of the preceptorship of service in the experience of ESSA students. There is convergence regarding the shortage of structures in the three levels of complexity of care, excluding a single service of high complexity that belongs to a private network associated with SUS. Regarding the preceptorship, they converge by referring to a good performance of preceptors during traineeships; regarding the distance between theory and practice; regarding the training of nurses by pointing failure in the practical field, insecurity and the need to give continuity to the learning process. Moreover, they report that they feel more secure to work in primary care. When considering the entire description made by the students of this research, one should perceive a weakness in the teaching/service integration process. We suggest that the Teaching-Service Integration Commissions (CIES, as per its acronym in Portuguese) reflect about this reality and make use of strategies that consider the curriculum traineeship as an essential pedagogical practice for training nursing professionals with reflexive and critical capacity, thus becoming able to understand and intervene before the multiple determination of the health-disease process in a social reality.

Přínos magisterského vzdělání pro ošetřovatelství / Benefit of master education for nursing

KUČÍRKOVÁ, Alena January 2016 (has links)
This Master thesis discusses contemporary issues of nursing education in the Czech Republic. An amendment of the Act 96/2004 Coll. is currently being deeply discussed topic, however the amendment has not been approved yet. Therefore, I focus on current model of education which is in accordance with the European Directive EC 55/2013. Nursing is a separate scientific branch which has indisputable role in the care of healthy and sick people. Working with human health is very responsible and therefore competences related to nursing profession have been shifted from high schools to higher vocational schools and universities after our accession to the EU. Despite uniform European legislation the process of nursing education is different within EU states. I discussed this issue including basic concepts of present nursing in a theoretical part of the Master thesis. In this part is clearly elaborated system of nursing education in the Czech Republic and in the world. Furthermore, there is also elaborated about university education which is focused on achieving specialization in nursing education in contrary with the system of lifetime education. Goals of this Master thesis are to analyse opinions of nurses in leadership positions on the current education model and concurrently with that to ascertain their opinion on benefits of master education in nursing care. Four research questions were set up based on these targets. Concretely: What contribution does university education for nurses bring to practice? What are differences between nurses with bachelor and master degree from the perspective of leading nurses? furthermore"How does master education contribute to the quality of nursing care? and finally How are nurses with master degree seen by their superiors? In this master thesis there is used a qualitative research strategy to answer given questions and to meet set objectives. It has been reached by using non-standardized, non-structured interviews with open questions. The research data set consists of nine nurses from hospitals in the Region of South Bohemia. Under absolute anonymity, which the proband set, we cannot provide any closer socio-demographic information. Interview were always conducted individually, with the agreement of proband and it was recorded to a pre-prepared sheet. The survey was carried out during February and March 2016 in pre-selected workplaces of each proband. The results are summarized clearly into categories, subcategories and for clarity into concrete subgroups. For completeness, results are also shown in graphical form using diagrams. The results show that most of head nurses support education of their subordinated nurses, agree with current model of education system and also welcome this model due to extension of knowledge in nursing. Proband perceive negatively knowledge of graduates of healthcare high schools. The discussion of differences between nurses with bachelor and master degree brings a finding that head nurses prefer nurses with master degree for their maturity, self-confidence and as a bonus for the specialization obtained while gaining the Master degree. Master show better knowledge, know-how to apply EBN and they play important role during creating standards in practice. Furthermore, in the opinion of probands, nurses with master degree can better organize teams and have better ability to work in a role of a nurse manager. According to probands nurses with master degree could significantly influence nurse care by their knowledge, initiative, confidence in decision-making and a higher viewpoint that these nurses reached during their study. Moreover, these nurses are aware of the degree of responsibility of their work and according to the claim of probands they are appropriate for leadership positions where they can apply their knowledge after adequate practice time at the bedside.

Laboratório de enfermagem: contribuição para a formação crítica do enfermeiro / Nursing laboratory: contribution for thought formation of the registered nurse

Brito, Fátima Maria de Melo 27 April 2017 (has links)
This research has as its main objective to study the contribution of the nursing laboratory in the thought formation of the registered nurse. Its specific objectives are: to analyze this contribution in the thought formation of the registered nurse; grasp the understanding of the purpose of the nursing laboratory as a contribution to the formation of registered nurses as seen by the nursing professors teaching in the undergraduate program of nursing; characterize the nursing laboratories in the undergraduate program in nursing as to its substructure. The adopted theorical reference was seen in critical teachings by Paulo Freire. This study is of the qualitative, exploratory and descriptive type. The participants are the nursing professors in two nursing schools of higher education. The methodology used was an analysis of content in the area of the theme. The analysis originated from two groups of data:1) relative to the substructure of the laboratories and 2) relative to the understanding of the nursing professor in regard to the nursing laboratory and its contribution to the thought formation of a registered nurse. The research instruments used were: a structured guide for the substructure and a semi-structured interview guide. In the analysis of the substructure the following elements were considered: organizational, environmental, as well as specific technical personnel and working material and also the physical area. The analysis of the opinions of the participants opened up three topics:1) The nursing laboratory used as a measure of the teaching-learning process; 2) The nearness and farness from the thought formation; 3) The potentialities and challenges of the nursing laboratory. The results showed that the substructure of the laboratories show a hospital-centered characteristic in the lack of a learning scene for basic nursing care skills. As far as the understanding of the nursing professors in regard to the objective of the study, it can be concluded that the professors understand the nursing laboratory as an important and essential teaching-learning space in the formation of a registered nurse, with the promising of the formation of security and self-confidence in the giving of basic nursing care skills. This is favorable to the formation of positive relationships between professors and students, and being an easier way of evaluation of a thoughtful reflection of the basic nursing care skills, with many potentialities yet to develop. It is hoped that with this study subsidies to the thoughtful reflection of the professor, students and administrators as to the formation of registered nurses using the nursing laboratory with its characteristics, potentialities and challenges being considered remembering that besides the teaching of basic nursing care skills, the ethical, critical and humanitarian perspective is essential in giving quality nursing care.

ACCELERATING THE NOTICING SKILLS OF NURSING AND MEDICAL STUDENTS USING STAGED VIDEO SIMULATION

Razer, Abby 01 December 2016 (has links)
This study examines the accelerating of expertise by training novices to attend to the situational cues that experts notice to solve problems. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine and expand upon training of expertise by using the expertise-based training (XBT) approach as a guide. Specifically, the study investigated a strategy for targeting the beginning of situation awareness and pattern recognition. Medical and nursing student participants were asked to interactively observe videotaped simulated nursing scenarios for the presence of errors, with experts’ observations of the same clips provided as feedback. Participants were cued to reflect upon how their observations differed from experts’ observations of the same video clips. The study qualitatively analyzed the scenario observations and focus group responses to determine if the students expanded their basic level of clinical judgment. The study found that the students enjoyed the scenarios even while promoting cognitive dissonance as the errors generated a substantive discussion. The potential benefits of the study to nursing education, along with other fields that employ simulator training, will be in discovering new ways to employ the simulator for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
