A insegurança alimentar no ambiente obesogênico global / Food insecurity in the global obesogenic environment

Abbade, Eduardo Botti January 2014 (has links)
The wide proposal of this thesis is to present evidence about the situation of food security worldwide, since the world is facing severe and urgent problems related to this issue. Considering this finality, this thesis is composed by five studies addressing the food security worldwide issue. The first study aims to investigate the export of Brazilian dry-beans, observing the conditions of food security of importers. The second study aims to discuss the agricultural profiles of the main regions of Africa, as well as the partnership between Africa and Brazil established to foster innovation in agriculture and economic development. The third study seeks to identify and analyze the main food supply patterns of the world's population, and then relate them to their conditions of malnutrition in their localities. The hypothesis is that there are specific supply patterns, geographically identifiable, which are associated with nutritional misalignment of certain populations to a greater degree than others. The fourth study investigates the status and trend of food insecurity around the world considering its major geographic regions. The fifth study aimed to analyze the impact of socio-economic and behavioral factors on obesogenic situation worldwide. All five studies are based on data available at official organizations and institutions as FAO, WHO, UNSD, World Bank and IBGE. In addition, data analysis techniques complies descriptive statistics, correlation analysis (Pearson and Spearman), linear regression (simple and multiple), cluster analysis and factor analysis. Scatterplots and time series graphs were also elaborated. The main results suggest that food supply patterns are significantly related to the problems of global food insecurity. It was also found that some nations and world regions face severe severities of food security, with alarming trends of worsening. Specifically, Southern Africa region has increased prevalence of overweight and underweight children. The countries of Eastern Asia have the best indicators of food security, considering anthropometric indicators. The study also suggests that Brazil has the potential to assist the promotion of food security worldwide through the production and supply of food, and through innovative partnerships with poorer regions like sub-Saharan Africa. The implications of this study include the realm of public policy, private practices and economic-social elements. The evidence presented here may assist in developing initiatives for the promotion of world food security. Furthermore, the role of the Brazilian agribusiness as potential attenuator of food insecurity worldwide is highlighted, requiring political and private articulation for the sustainable development.

Prevalência de excesso de peso em adultos segundo a percepção do ambiente para a prática de atividade física em um município paulista de pequeno porte / Prevalence of excess weight in adults according to perception of the environment for the practice of physical activity in a town in São Paulo state.

Marília Augusta Sousa Nascimento 06 November 2012 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the prevalence of obesity and the perception of the environment for the practice of physical activity in adults from Itirapuã, São Paulo state. A population-based cross-sectional study involving 216 adults was conducted. Sociodemographic and behavioral data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The perception of the environment for the practice of physical activity was assessed by an adapted version of the structured questionnaire Neighborhood Environmental Walkability Scale (NEWS) validated for use in the Brazilian population. Prevalences of both overweight and obesity (95% CI) were estimated. Bivariate logistic regression models, adjusted for gender and age, were employed to assess the relationship between excess weight (overweight and obesity) and perception of the environment for the practice of physical activity. Of the 216 adults assessed, 55% were women and mean age was 37 (±12) years. A high rate of overweight (31%) and obesity (25.5%) was found. The regression models adjusted for gender and age revealed that individuals living far from primary schools [OR 1.99 (95%CI 1.13; 3.47)], movie rental stores [OR 2.33 (95%CI 1.29; 4.19)] and squares or spaces outside to perform physical activities [OR 2.05 (95%CI 1.15; 3.66)] had a higher risk of excess weight. Regarding level of satisfaction with the neighborhood, satisfaction with the quality and quantity of supermarkets in the neighborhood of residence was inversely associated with excess weight [OR 0.14 (95%CI 0.03; 0.69)]. These results suggest that adults living in small towns are also influenced by the environment in terms of practice of physical activity and that this is associated with excess weight.

Životní styl jako determinant nadváhy a obezity / Lifestyle as a determinant of overweight and obesity

Wlochová, Markéta January 2011 (has links)
Diploma thesis "Lifestyle as a determinant of overweight and obesity" focuses on risk factors determination which influences overweight and obesity in population in regards to failure of programmes dealing with this topic. Main goal of this thesis is to understand current lifestyle of chosen group of people because traditional understanding for reasons of overweight and obesity - higher energy income than outcome - seems to be insufficient. Further target is current Czech policy analysis, especially part of policy dealing with overweight and obesity prevention and its connection with European Union. In the first part of the thesis reader takes up with overweight and obesity as itself. This is followed by targets and research questions definition. Primary method is qualitative research. There is no generally accepted definition for this kind of research and therefore this method is briefly described here. Method used for policy analysis is content analysis. For this part i used domestic public policy documents as well as abroad ones. The next chapter is devoted to the theoretical recurrences and conceptualization of basic terms which are basement for this work. The chapter focused on development of obesity prevention policy briefly introduces into policy creation from its origins as a protection of...

Politika boje proti dětské obezitě ve vztahu k produkci a marketingu potravin / Public Policy to Prevent Childhood Obesity and the Role of Food Production and Marketing

Winzbergerová, Alžběta January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is a case study focused on a relationship between public policy to prevent childhood obesity and the role of the food production and marketing in the Czech Republic. The emphasis is especially given to the institutional framework of food marketed and produced for children and its social concequences, because childhood obesity is one of them. The results from the analysis are then confronted with views and opinions of children and their parents, with how they feel about food advertising. Conclusion: advertising and production of food designated for children is not regulated in the Czech Republic. On governmental level only basic standards and rules are given and self-regulation is given precedence. Parents are aware of the huge influence of advertising on their children and that is why they are not satistied with the current situation. They would appreciate stronger legislative regulation of marketing and production of food for children.

Moubarac, Jean-Claude 03 1900 (has links)
The World Health Organization recommends that individuals reduce their consumption of sweet foods and drinks to prevent chronic diseases. Research in public health has not generally sought to elucidate the environmental and individual factors that may jointly influence sweet food consumption. Such knowledge would be relevant, however, in supporting interventions on sweet food consumption. The aim of this thesis was to examine contextual and individual factors associated with daily consumption of sweet foods in adults living in a western urban setting. An established Middle Eastern community in Montreal was the setting for this study. Sweet food was defined as refined carbohydrates that contain more than 20% of total energy from total sugars. In a preliminary step (N = 42), 24-hour recalls enabled the identification of sweet food sources and the measurement of daily intake of total sugars from total energy intake. The context of sweet food consumption was studied through a qualitative descriptive study. An ecological conceptual framework was used to frame the context of sweet food consumption and thus to guide the collection of semi-structured interviews (N=42). Content analysis using open and focused coding techniques was used to inform the development of a quantitative measure to investigate the context of sweet food consumption. This measure was pilot-tested on 20 individuals and administered to the main sample (N = 192). Contextual domains were clarified using exploratory factor analysis. Individual factors measured included depressive symptoms, mastery, sociodemographic factors, perception, daytime sleepiness and HbA1C. A food frequency questionnaire was used to measure daily intake of sweet food (N = 192). Sweet food consumption followed a gamma distribution. Multivariate regression analysis using the generalised linear model (gamma distribution and log-link function) was used to estimate the associations between contextual and individual factors and consumption of sweet food, accounting for covariates (gender and age). Total sugar consumption was 20,3 % of total energy, similar to the average intake of the population of Quebec and Canada. Daily consumption of total sugars averaged 76 g/day. Qualitative analyses and factor analysis led to the identification and refinement of a 42-item contextual measure with items grouped into seven domains (emotional needs, snacking, energy demands, socialisation, visual stimuli, indulgence and constraints). Consumption of total sugars was higher amongst males (B = 0,204, SE = 0,094, p = 0,03). Domains positively associated with total sugar consumption included eating dessert (B = 0,105, SE = 0,036, p = 0,001), snacking (B = 0,225, SE = 0,091, p = 0,01) and depressive symptoms (B = 0,017, SE = 0,094, p = 0,03). Indulgence (B = -0,103, SE = 0,052, p = 0,05), self-moderation (B = -0,121, SE = 0,042, p = 0,001), and age (B = -0,01, SE = 0,004, p = 0,02) were negatively associated with sugar consumption. This mixed-methods study developed a novel measure to study the factors associated with sugar consumption. Individual and contextual factors were jointly associated with consumption of sweet foods. Contextual as well as individual factors should be jointly targeted by public health efforts to support individuals in limiting their consumption of sweet foods, as necessary.
