Stepping through different realities: a phenomenological hermeneutic study of psychotherapists' spiritual experience

Ryan, Kay Unknown Date (has links)
This study explores therapists' spiritual experience, personally and within the therapeutic relationship. It focuses on the lived experience of therapists and the different meanings made of what is experienced. The purpose of this research is to bring into the light spiritual experiences of therapists and how they are experienced in the therapeutic process. It contributes to current debate about spiritual experience in the day- to- day practice of psychotherapy. The methodology of phenomenological hermeneutics is chosen as it provides the means to study therapists' lived experience. The study is guided by the philosophical thinking of Heidegger, Gadamer and Van Manen. The findings of this study reveal different types of spiritual experience. These include non-ordinary states of consciousness where there is a feeling sense of being beyond the boundaries of linear time and space. Experiences involve noticing subtle body feelings before they manifest in everyday consciousness. They include hearing and seeing phenomena that may normally be overlooked or disavowed in psychotherapy. The findings show therapists' ability to notice, explore and utilize subtle body phenomena was a combination of their own capabilities, their spiritual practice, and years of experience as therapists. The therapist's body appeared to be like a doorway into experiences that had transformative effects on both therapists and clients. The meanings made of experiences reflected therapists' spiritual and cultural beliefs. These beliefs meant that therapists are attuned to something bigger than everyday identity that gave meaning and purpose to the work and was a rich source of wisdom and guidance, comfort and a sense of being held in the work. Specific attitudes and qualities of presence are revealed that reflect therapists' spiritual beliefs. Participants described experiences that emerged out of the context of the therapeutic relationship but could not be explained clinically. The findings show therapists' world views, their spiritual and cultural beliefs and capacity to experience the unknown, bring a richness and diversity of meanings to the therapeutic relationship that includes the wider contexts of culture and the environment. This study explores current thinking about spiritual experience in psychotherapy and its effects on the therapist. It raises issues for further discussion relating to the role of therapists' spiritual experience in contemporary psychotherapy.

Our Language of Dreams

Pathe, Madison K 01 April 2013 (has links)
This project explores the idea of dream sharing and how language is both a tool and a barrier for sharing dream experiences. I collected video and audio dream diaries from 15 different people and stitched together a "collective" dream that contains elements from each. From this new dream, I pulled words and displayed them as text on-screen. What is the relationship from the listener and the actual dream experience? Can we truly experience the dreams of others?

Dreaming as a mechanism for emotional handling : did dreams become more emotional after 9/11?

Palmenfelt, August January 2007 (has links)
<p>This study investigates the effects of traumatic experiences on emotional content of dreams. The theoretical framework of the present study is both the threat simulation theory and Hartmann’s theory of dreams as a mechanism for handling emotions after traumatic events. Both theories predict an increase in negative emotions after trauma but assign a different function for this increase. The subjects in this study (N = 16) were regularly writing dream diaries which after the 9/11 attack gave the researchers an unique opportunity to study the exact impact of events on dream content. Each subject’s ten last dreams before 9/11, and ten first dreams after 9/11, were analysed according to the emotional content. The results showed no significant differences in the number or tone of emotions in the before dreams compared to the after dreams. Possibly because none of the subjects experienced the event first hand.</p>

Innovating in 'the dream-factory' : social change through mindset-change: evidence from Kerala, India

Thalberg Pedersen, Nathalie, Staflund, Linda January 2013 (has links)
Background The mindset of an individual is made up by perception and motivation. Motivation is in turn driven by personal experiences, values and goals. Many times, a personal experience can act as a ‘Gandhi-moment’ or a triggering event to take action towards achieving a specific outcome. For a social entrepreneur, this outcome is many times some type of positive social change. In order for the social entrepreneur to create this, he or she needs to be innovative and creative, and therefore stay open towards new opportunities and perspectives to not get stuck in a particular mindset. Purpose The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the role of personal experiences and a person’s mindset in the start-up of a social project. Furthermore, the study aims to explore how a change in one’s mindset can result in social projects or enterprises that are successfully able to create social change. Method The research approach of the thesis takes the form of a multiple case study; one main large case and four illustrative smaller ones. The data analysis is of abductive style, going back and forth between theory and empirical data. Conclusion It can be concluded that personal experiences can serve as a motivational platform for an individual starting a project or enterprise, aiming to create a social change. However, other elements of a person’s mindset will also influence this process, in terms motivation and perception. Furthermore, for changes in society to occur, changes first needs to be made from within. Therefore, in order for a social entrepreneur to create actual social change; he or she needs to go through a process of mindset-change.

Lapinskaitė, Sandra 02 July 2012 (has links)
Kuriant darbų kolekciją stengtasi perteikti žmogaus santykį su savimi pačiu sapno erdvėje. Pasirinkta oforto technika, kuri suteikė galimybę sukurti siurrealistinius vaizdinius, remiantis melo ir tiesos, realygės ir už jos ribų esančiomis dviprasmybėmis. Už formų bei kompozicijos sprendimų slypi kiekvieno akimis regėtas pasaulis. Tai matyti šioje kolekcijoje ,,Sapnų užrašai“. Už įvairių taško, linijos ir dėmės kuriamų formų ir kompozicinių sprendimų slypi sapno vaizdinių perteikimas. Nors nemažos dalies naudotų simbolių prasmė lieka paslaptimi, tačiau žiūrovui suteikti minties laisvę stebint kūrynį yra viena iš galimybių meną pažinti savaip. / When creating work collection it was attempted to convey the relation with oneself in a space of a dream. En inblick i trauma hos personer med krigsupplevelser genom analys och jämförelser av deras drömmar / An insight into trauma by subjects with war experiences through analysis and comparisons of their dreams

Ferngren, Leyla January 2015 (has links)
Introduction: Trauma affects dreams and its processing skills of content. An important point is that the etiology of PTSD is considered to be a traumatic experience that can lead to recurrent nightmares. Today there are many people in the community who suffer from trauma and trauma-related problems making the development of trauma theory be of central importance for providing good treatment. The aim of this study is to contribute knowledge about how traumatic experiences are processed in dreams with a focus on affects and interactions with other people that can lead to further development of psychodynamic trauma theory. Research questions:  What are the differencesindreamsbetween thegroupsin terms of emotions ?  What are thekey themespresent inboth groupsdreams andhowdoes it lookincomparisonbetween the groups? Method: The used method is a combined quantitative and qualitative approach where 60 dreams from former war veterans studied and compared in two groups. Results: Results of the study demonstrate traumas negative effects on affect regulation skills and relationships. It also highlights both the dream's meaning as an entrance to the psychic life to gain insight into how traumatic events and affects handled, and the function of dreaming in affect regulation as an important processing factor for trauma. Discussion: The study results are in many aspects in line with previous research and theory, but in particular, two aspects of the results deserve to be highlighted: The dream as an entrance for the psychic life: 1. how traumatic events and affects handled; 2. Which factors could be of importance in the processing of trauma.
